Deb Moffa unabashedly tells her patients and her co-workers: “Organ donations save lives.” And she should know. The Excela Health nursing leader is celebrating the first anniversary of her liver transplant as she marks National Donate Life Month. On her birthday, Moffa learned she was a candidate for a transplant. Expecting that it would likely take years for her to become an organ recipient, family and friends were making plans to be tested to see if they might be a match as a living donor, since the liver will regenerate in both the donor and recipient.

Two weeks after Moffa was accepted as a transplant candidate, she was summoned to UPMC Montefiore where she received a new organ. Her benefactor: a 36-year-old inmate. While Moffa does not know his name or the circumstances surrounding his incarceration or death, she is deeply grateful. “Whatever else happened in his life, his last act was for good.”

Foundation Golf Classic Continues to Enhance Patient Care at Frick Hospital Proceeds from the 30th Annual Golf Classic hosted by the Westmoreland/Frick Hospital Foundation are supporting continued enhancements to the patient care environment at Excela Frick Hospital. More than $60,000 was raised during the 2021 Frick Golf Classic, bringing the total netted over the past seven years to $459,310 for Frick Hospital. The past three years, the outing has generated $231,657, some of which was directed to the purchase of specialized equipment to aid in the hospital’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Most recently, event proceeds were used to purchase over-the-bed tray tables, bedside night stands, patient-caregiver communication white boards and medication storage boxes for all 33 inpatient rooms at Frick Hospital. Previous golf outing funds were used to procure DynaMap machines that monitor patient vital signs as well as furniture, including chairs and pullout couches, for the increased comfort of patient family members.

Meds to Beds Program The Meds to Beds program offered at Westmoreland Hospital is a pharmacy service that gives patients the opportunity to fill discharge prescriptions, and have them delivered to their bedside, prior to leaving the hospital. It is a great way to ensure patients walk out with their prescriptions in hand, as well as with all medication questions answered. Meds to Beds programs have been shown to increase medication compliance as well as decrease the potential for hospital readmission due to medication related issues. In the last two years, Westmoreland Hospital Outpatient Pharmacy has successfully assisted 4,833 patients walk out with their prescriptions at discharge. These patients have shown an average relative risk reduction for 30-day readmission of 39.25%.
