Innovation and Excellence Celebrated In Spite of a Pandemic
EWTA members are typically recognized at the APA Annual Meeting and EWTA Info Fair for innovative practices and excellence in service. This year, we ask APA members to vote for the award winners via an electronic ballot. Votes for the Supplier of the Year Awards are cast based on quality, service and delivery. The winners will be announced in January and highlighted in the Spring 2021 Journal.Below are entries for the Innovation of the Year entries in alphabetical order, by company), followed by a list of the Supplier of the Year award candidates (sorted by category). To recognize the outstanding service of so many members, the EWTA Advisory Committee implemented a new rule in 2019 that no member is eligible to win two consecutive years.

Benefit 1: Reduction of material loss in the screening process due to early changes of the ring flaker
Benefit 2: Reduction of glue usage by providing better control over the number of fine particles
Results: Exact reporting of the length, width and height of the wood particles
Description: The 3D ParticleView is a measuring unit that assesses the wood particle quality. The particles are taken from the process downstream of the knife ring flaker and are placed in the particle view. The unit will use a patented laser line and camera to measure the length, width and thickness of each particle.

Precision Coat KP-12 Product Family

Benefit 1: Dramatically improves topcoat performance for timbers, dimensional laminated lumber and engineered wood.
Benefit 2: Protects wood during manufacturing and construction processes.
Results: 1) With KP-12 undercoat, the Quebec City Amphitheatre was protected from outdoor weathering during a lengthy construction timeline, but still able to be top coated with the final finish in situ. Still going strong since 2015. 2) The University of British Columbia Earth Systems Sciences Building has stood the test of time with KP-12. 8 years + on exterior in a natural color no less. One of the premier early mass timber examples.
Description: Penetrating aqueous low-VOC protective undercoating for structural wood, dimensional lumber, engineered wood and mass timber subject to wet conditions. Designed for machine and HVLP airless application. Tintable formula reduces swelling, wood rot, moisture absorption and protects against UV degradation and staining.

Description: The Chattermark Roughness Scanner (CRS) assesses whether the quality of the surface lies within a defined tolerance range, defined by the customer. Detects the surface quality of sanded wood-based panels. Continuous quality monitoring of designated roughness and chatter mark to maintain A grade panels.
