Message from the Chair and Founder

T

he 2012-2013 fiscal year continued to present challenges to MOLC because of the slow economy. Nevertheless, we served 8,939 individuals in our Basic Needs Program, 4,199 of which were unduplicated.

Even with the establishment of a $20 per person, per year membership fee for clients in our Basic Needs Program, we still served 1,725 more clients in this program than we John C. These figures validate Chairman of the Board Founder the continued need for our support to underprivileged and impoverished individuals and families in the Washington metropolitan area.

MOLC also served 189 clients in our Life Skills/Work Readiness Program, with 97 percent of those graduating receiving a job offer from Giant or other employers; and we served 106 clients in our Seniors Network Program.

MOLC is at a pivotal point in its 21-year existence, and we must review and adjust the services we provide to our clients. For example, beginning in 2014, obtaining a GED will be more challenging. Major changes include higher level mathematics, long and short essay questions, and a section on soft skills that employers say workers need to be successful on jobs. In addition, the new test will now be administered on computer, with pencil-and-paper testing only available in limited circumstances. Consequently, we will assess our programs to determine if our clients, other than those in our Seniors Network Program, need basic computer literacy and other preparation.

MOLC congratulates County Executive Rushern Baker on the county’s Transforming Neighborhoods Initiative, which focuses on uplifting six neighborhoods that face significant economic, health, public safety and educational challenges: Glassmanor/Oxon Hill, Kentland/Palmer Park, Suitland/Coral Hills, East Riverdale/Bladensburg, Hillcrest Heights/Marlow Heights, and Langley Park. While MOLC already serves many residents in these communities, we will provide special outreach to ensure that all residents who need to are aware of and taking advantage of MOLC’s programs and services.

Finally, we thank MOLC staff for doing more with less, and our funders for their continued support.

About MOLC

ission of Love Charities, Inc. (MOLC), is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) health and human services organization located in Prince George’s County, Maryland, dedicated to supporting underprivileged and impoverished individuals and families by providing services designed for short-term and crisis needs, and programs that provide training to develop skills for long-term stability and growth. Services are provided under the organization’s Basic Needs, Life Skills/Work Readiness, and Seniors Network programs described in this annual report.

As of June 30, 2013, MOLC has served more than 324,939 disadvantaged individuals and families since its inception in 1991. Individuals and families seeking MOLC services are screened via an intake process using Efforts to Outcomes, a web-based case management program that enables MOLC to collect data and produce reports to document program services.

After a client pays a $20 annual membership fee (initiated in FY 2011 to help defray MOLC costs), services are offered at no additional cost to those who qualify as low-income according to the published income guidelines of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Basic Needs Program

T

he Basic Needs Program provides basic essentials to lowincome individuals and families, enabling them to stretch their limited household incomes to pay for other essentials, including rent and utilities.

Clients receive clothing, shoes, furniture, household goods and amenities, which are distributed from our warehouse facility. Many clients are also referred to other services in the community as needed.

Under a partnership with Community Connections Maryland, MOLC has trained developmentally disabled individuals to work in the warehouse, which prepared them for paid jobs in the workforce. MOLC also works with other organizations that provide volunteers.

MOLC provided 11,643 units of service to 8,939 individuals, 4,199 of which were unduplicated.

From July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013, 3,560 individuals/families received food, clothing and household amenities; 479 individuals and families received Thanksgiving food baskets; 121 individuals and families received Christmas food baskets; 286 children and youth received toys for Christmas; 13 individuals received housing counseling; 6 individuals received anger management and conflict resolution counseling; 4 individuals received family counseling (pre- and post-marital); and 3 individuals were stabilized after receiving suicide prevention counseling and other counseling through the Renewed Mind Program for compulsive behavior/substance abuse.

Of those coming for service, 1,229 were over 55 years of age. With respect to race/ethnicity, 7,413 were black/African American, 1,377 were Hispanic, 109 were white, 13 were multi-racial, 11 were Asian American, 9 were American Indian, and 7 were unidentified.

Life Skills Program

T

he Life Skills Work/Readiness Program recruits, enrolls and trains unemployed and underemployed individuals for jobs, including higher paying, skill-based jobs in the growth sectors of the workforce. MOLC also makes referrals to local community colleges, universities and Job Corps Training Program. As individuals progress through the program, intensive followup and support services are provided to increase the likelihood of success in the job market.

MOLC provided 313 units of service to 189 individuals (unduplicated count) in its Life Skills Program. One hundred percent (100%) of all persons graduating from this program are interviewed by Giant, and 97%

received employment with Giant or other employers.

MOLC’s Youth Development Program has been transferred into the Life Skills/ Work Readiness Program. This program provides positive skills training for youth and young adults and helps them improve self-esteem, develop socialization skills, assume leadership roles in their schools and communities, and graduate from high school.

In August of each year, MOLC hosts a back-to-school picnic for approximately 150 to 250 youth and young adults, where backpacks filled with school supplies, speakers about success in school and fun activities are the highlights of the day.

Seniors Network Program

T

hrough its Seniors Network Program, MOLC serves senior adults 60 years and older and gives them an opportunity to learn computer skills and participate in socialization activities with their peers.

Through a partnership with AARP, seniors are also able to participate in a Safe Driver’s Program.

MOLC provided 487 units of service to 106 seniors, of which 32 were unduplicated.

Both basic and advanced computer skills are taught.

Participating seniors also receive information on a variety of wellness topics, participate in health screenings, and receive basic transportation assistance.

Seniors Network Program

Success Stories Basic Needs — Everett Kegler Everett Kegler came to MOLC from Maryland Community Connection to be trained by MOLC staff to enter the workforce and be a success to himself and his family. Maryland Community Connection is a 12-year-old 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization that helps individuals with developmental disabilities achieve their goals.

After Mr. Kegler worked faithfully for MOLC in the clothing room for two years, Mr. Willie Parker, MOLC’s Basic Needs Program manager, requested Maryland Community Connection to send him to a job site, but he failed his first assignment. Mr. Parker worked with Mr. Kegler and discovered that he was uncomfortable with confusion and loud noises, including loud verbal interaction. Mr. Parker worked through this problem with Mr. Kegler until he was comfortable with clients. Mr. Kegler is now employed with Andrews Air Force Base, where he makes $15.00 per hour with full benefits.

Life Skills/Work Readiness — Wilma Childress Wilma Childress, affectionately called Ms. Wilma by her classmates, gives the term “senior citizen” a brand new meaning. Dictionary.com defines senior citizen as “an elderly or aged person, especially one who is retired.”

Ms. Wilma came to interview for the MOLC Life Skills Work Readiness (LSWR) program with some apprehension – she mentioned her “fear of holding on to information” and that she “wasn’t sure about her next move.” She explained she had worked for a cleaning service for 29 years and retired, but that she didn’t want to “sit around getting older,” and was “eager to try new things.”

At age 72, Ms. Wilma excelled in the Life Skills program – always willing to impart some wisdom and experience.

Her humbleness kept her at the top of

the class, and she never took for granted that she, too, was still in a learning place.

Ms. Wilma graduated from the LSWR program in June 2013 and is currently working at Giant.

She has made a lasting expression on her supervisors and co-workers, has received several service awards, and is respectfully known as “Mama.”

Maryrose Lyles, LSWR manager, says, “It was a pleasure and an honor to serve Ms. Wilma. I will forever be reminded that we, too, are never too old to learn.”
