ACCESS PASS PROGRAM All 12 locations of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites are proud to participate in the Access Pass program. The program, which was started by The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis in 2004, brings together museums across the state of Indiana to make fun family learning available to more Hoosier families.

The Access Pass program is open to Indiana residents who receive state assistance either through Hoosier Healthwise Insurance, Hoosier Works, SNAP or TANF assistance programs.

FIRST FLOOR EXPERIENCES Legacy Theater Discover the moving stories of African American Hoosiers who helped shape Indiana’s past and continue to influence our lives.

Birth of the Earth Learn how a mix of constant change and bold transformations shaped the Hoosier state we know today. See a moon rock, explore an 8-foot interactive globe and more.

Ancient Seas Believe it or not, oceans once covered Indiana. Explore various touch drawers, see fossils and learn how those ancient animals helped build the bedrock beneath our feet.

Frozen Reign: A State of Change Journey through the Ice Age, beginning with a trip through a chilly ice tunnel. See how you size up against various prehistoric animals, wind your way through replicas of ancient caves and go toe-to-tusk with the real skeletons of Ice Age giants.

First Nations: The Story of Indiana’s Founding People Learn about the vibrant communities built by Indiana’s Native Americans and how traditions are alive today. See rare artifacts, sniff spices used in cooking, enjoy interactive video experiences and more.

Natural Regions Indiana’s landscape has changed drastically over time, affecting the lives of animals that call the state home. Hear the sounds of different frogs and birds, see replicas of Indiana’s environment through time and learn about threats to native plants and animals today.

R.B. Annis Naturalist’s Lab (TEMPORARILY CLOSED) Explore Indiana’s natural history through your senses by using microscopes, exploring touch drawers, participating in demonstrations and more. The Naturalist’s Lab is a place for hands-on exploration of different sciences.

IMAX® Theater (TEMPORARILY CLOSED) Featuring Academy Award-winning IMAX® technology and a six-story screen, the IMAX Theater offers audiences both 2D and 3D IMAX films, as well as contemporary Hollywood movies. Movie tickets not included with purchase of museum admission.

SECOND FLOOR EXPERIENCES Contested Territory Learn about the turbulent time in Indiana’s history as it moved from frontier to statehood. Enter the scene as the Treaty of Greenville is negotiated and hear Little Turtle’s powerful speech spoken in the Miami language.

19th State Step into pioneer Indiana and be transported to a world of oxen, farm tools and log cabins. See rare artifacts from Abraham Lincoln’s family, and find spaces where you can practice chopping wood and sawing a log.

The Hoosier Way Learn how Indiana forged its identity after the pioneer era by exploring real artifacts from this time of transformation. See artifacts from Indiana’s first African American settlements, objects from the Civil War and more.

Crossroads of America Explore the technological advancements in the era of railroads and how those improvements – like Wooton desks and automobiles, along with the use of coal and gas – changed transportation and commerce in Indiana.

Enterprise Indiana Experience American milestones such as World War I, Prohibition and suffrage through the eyes of Hoosiers who were there. Get up-close to a Stutz automobile, and learn the stories of Indiana’s immigrants.

Global Indiana Discover Indiana’s global impact, from World War II and pop culture to Hoosier life today. See war reporter Ernie Pyle’s typewriter, basketball icon Bobby Plump’s backboard, political signs from one of Indiana’s first Latina elected officials and more.

American Originals Visit a room filled with the faces of 20th-century Hoosiers. The stories of Indiana legends – like Gus Grissom, James Dean and Florence Henderson – are told in this unique space.

IN OUR NEWEST EXPERIENCES THIRD FLOOR EXPERIENCES FIX: Heartbreak and Hope Inside Our Opioid Crisis (open through Aug. 1, 2021) Last year, Hoosiers faced unforeseen challenges. We saw morale go down and hopelessness go up. We tackled uncharted territory not knowing what to expect, or where to turn. And right under our noses, the opioid crisis grew and has impacted more Hoosier families. Now, more than ever, we need to stand up for one another. Together, we can FIX this. With 2020 vision, we can see the opioid crisis more clearly.

Experience this award-winning exhibit and discover how creativity, unity and empathy can be powerful tools to help us all deal with the stresses of our new normal. A mix of art, science, multi-media, hands-on interactives and inspiring artwork will unify and empower all of us to change the course of this opioid epidemic.

State of Nature: Picturing Indiana Biodiversity (open Feb. 13 through Sept. 19) Experience the astonishing beauty and discover the importance of Indiana’s biological diversity through pieces from the natural world and artworks created by artists with Indiana connections. Explore how forests and ecological diversity in Indiana defined the lives of Hoosiers over the years, then consider how urbanization and climate change has impacted Indiana’s biological system and our everyday lives.

The exhibit was developed in collaboration with the Grunwald Gallery of Art, Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design, Indiana University, Bloomington.

Even the littlest learner can find fun at the Indiana State Museum. In this special class just for toddlers, children enjoy circle time, stories, station explorations and movement time. APRIL 10 - TRAINS, PLANES AND AUTOMOBILES Explorers will learn more about modes of transportation by checking out objects from our museum collection, creating their own cars and working together to create a racetrack.

SCOUTS BSA PROGRAMS

WEBELOS EARTH ROCKS ADVENTURE 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Feb. 13 $12/scout, $1/adult Webelos in grades 3 and 4 will explore Indiana’s geological features through a visit to our Birth of the Earth gallery and a hands-on exploration of rock samples. Only one session is needed to complete this adventure. Registration required two weeks prior to program.

GIRL SCOUT PROGRAMS

FORENSICS GIRL SCOUTS BADGE DAY 10 a.m. to noon (Juniors -Detective), 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. (Cadettes -Special Agent), April 10 $12/scout, $1/adult In the early session, girls in grades 4-5 will learn the basics of crime scene investigation as they earn their detective badge by collecting fingerprints, deciphering clues and experimenting with chromatography. In the afternoon, girls in grades 6-8 earn their special agent badge as they learn real techniques used by law enforcement agents, including micro-expressions and body language analysis, and solving a mystery by analyzing the scene. Registration required two weeks prior to program.

COURAGEOUS CONVERSATIONS: THEATRE, HUMOR AND CLIMATE CHANGE

6 to 7 p.m., March 26 $5/person, $2 for high school and college students with valid ID, free for members If the climate crisis has you feeling overwhelmed, hopeless and clouded by a relentless sense of inescapable doom, join us for a short, staged reading from Climate Follies (comedy about the unfunniest thing ever), followed by a discussion with the artistic team of playwright Jim Poyser and director Raphael Schwartzman.

In order to provide a more socially distant experience, this program will be offered outside along the Canal Walk. In true “Shakespeare in the Park” style, bring your own blankets, folding lawn chairs and masks. Please note, masks are required for all guests and actors during this outdoor event. Visitors are encouraged to park in the garage and walk through the Great Hall.

Learn about the 92 works of art on the exterior of the Indiana State Museum, plus discover how these unique sculptures represent the history of each county in the state.

Honor Hoosiers who have served in our armed forces during the Remembering Those Who Served Tour, which takes an in-depth look at artifacts reflecting those stories, or step outside of the Indiana State Museum for the 92 County Walking Tour to explore the 92 icons and how each icon represents the 92 counties in the Hoosier state.

Beginning in March, join us for the NEW Notorious Indiana Gallery Tour. Explore artifacts relating to a few of the Hoosier state’s “bad guys” and other dark historic events, plus learn why these items even have a place in the museum’s galleries!

MARCH 27 – LEWIS AND CLARK Learn about the Corps of Discovery’s cross-country trip and prepare to go on an adventure of your own. Join in a themed scavenger hunt, practice your map-making skills, complete a compass activity, see a musket demonstration and more. Registration required by March 20.

APRIL 24 – NATIVE AMERICANS IN INDIANA Explore the past – and present – day-to-day lives of Native Americans in the Hoosier state. Make crafts, sample foods, experience songs and dance, plus so much more.
