MARIO’S WORLD

1ST MARIO’S WORLD

This is an illustration of the world with the castle yet to be added. Technically the drawing contains both the first and second part of the Mario worlds, however I still decided to include it under this section because the second world is barely visible as it is occluded by the hill. This image gives a good understanding of my process as I first designed the world and the land the castle would sit before finally designing the castle.

When designing the land I made the decision to represent the trees in a more flat 2D way. I did this to allow for more space in the middle for the hills.

COMBINED MARIO’S WORLD

Here I added the castle on top of the hill.

The inspiration for the castle comes from 2 places. the first one was how the blocky nature of the world remind me of Minecraft which I associate with castles. The second piece of inspiration was Monument Valley, as it is drawn using a very similar drawing system. The style of the tower roofs were also heavily inspired by Monument Valley.

Finally, I decided to add the clouds and the sky. The clouds were added because they appear in my reference Mario World and the sky was added to give the clouds something to contrast with. The shape of the sky also helps to give the world a nice diamond shape.

ILLUSTRATED MARIO’S NEW WORLD

Here I traced the world in illustrator to add colour. The colour pallet comes for the reference world but as that game is so old the designers only had access to a limited colour palate. Because of this I took the liberty to modernize the colour palate making it less harsh to the eyes. I also included shadows to improve realism.

APPENDIX

Here I have started to reproduce the Mario World in 3D. To help ensure everything is on a perfect 45 degree angle I made an axonometric grid in illustrator which is visible behind the tracing paper.

Here I am developing the castle on a separate piece of paper. I did this because the castle was going to be very complicated and the chance of making mistakes were very high and I did not want to wreck my world with a mistake.

After developing both the castle and the world separately I started put them world.
