part one

line module 1: how to draw a croissant A croissant was photographed and scanned. It was then cut into slices, which were also scanned. These images were then adjusted to improve contrast and colour and were placed on a single A3 page (page 4). These images were then traced (page 5) and a scale axonometric drawing was produced (page 6).

part two

block module 2: flatness v projection Two screen shots of the Mario World 8-4 (page 10) were provided to be used as a starting point to help produce an axonometric world. Initially the dimensions of the world and position of objects were used to help inform the creation of a hand drawn axonometric illustration (page 9). This was produced by placing an image of the Mario World at a 45 degree angle and projecting up. This hand drawing was then traced, coloured and textured in Illustrator (page 8).

Here I have started to reproduce the Mario World in 3D. To help ensure everything was on a perfect 45 degree angle I made an axonometric grid in Illustrator which is visible behind the tracing paper.

Here I am developing the castle on a separate piece of paper. I did this because the castle was going to be very complicated and the chance of making an error was very high.

After developing both the castle and the world separately I started putting them together to form the final design of the world.

part three

spike module 3: pattern v surface Using the program Rhinoceros 3D, a 3D model of a small part of Tasmania was split up into a 10 by 10 grid of squares measuring 59.4mm. A number of square-based pyramids were produced and were deformed and placed on this grid by an algorithm.

These pyramids were then flattened into nets where tabs were added. They were then printed, cut out and assembled to produce a 3D model.

Here I am folding and glueing each module together.

Here the grey represents the modules that comprise the piece. The green and orange shapes represent the bounding boxes for the modules.

These bounding boxes allow each pyramid to over hang.

Packagenet for one of the modules (not to scale) - the dotted lines represent fold lines and the solid lines represent cut lines.

Here I am cutting out the packagenet with a knife and then scoring the fold lines to ensure a cleaner fold, also with a knife.

Here I am glueing each module together to form the model. I am using a combination of bulldog clips and pegs to hold the model together as it dries.

part four

arch module 4: frame v field The Melbourne University quadrangle was modeled in Rhinoceros 3D. Lighting and textures were added to the model to help convey a narrative as dictated by an extract from Forbidden Cities 4. The quadrangle model was then rendered using a ray-tracing engine from two different perspectives. A number of 2D images were then placed in the scene to allow the image to better reflect the story (page 19 & 20). An isometric drawing with a key was also produced to aid in storytelling (page 18).

reflection Through the lectures, workshops and modules, I have gained proficiency in Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign and Rhinoceros 3D. I also developed a deeper understanding of the underlying principles that govern good design and improved my ability to draw and produce models.

Module 1 helped me to consolidate and build on my drawing skills, by teaching me how to better convey the form and texture of an object through cross-hatching and shading. Module 1 also introduced me to the axonometric drawing system. Overall, Module 1 was a success as the drawings clearly conveyed the form and texture of the croissant however, the drawings could have been more accurate and the contrast was a bit too high.

Module 2 provided me with a deeper understanding of axonometric projection and enabled me to refine my Illustrator skills by exploring various textures and lighting effects. Module 2 was successful as details such as the shadows and bricks on the castle helped to give the work a sense of realism as it followed constant rules. However, it was not completely true to

the original Mario World and the original clouds did not quite match the aesthetic of the world and therefore looked out of place. To remedy this, I replaced them with clouds that work better with the overall drawing.

In Module 3, I learnt how to use non-uniform rational basis splines (NURBS) in Rhinoceros 3D and manipulate them using algorithms. I also learnt that for an object to be rolled flat it must be developable and refined my model making skills. The finished model, on the whole, was well executed although the joins between each pyramid could have had been more refined.

In Module 4, I further developed my skills in Rhinoceros 3D by modeling the Melbourne University quadrangle. I also learnt how to properly light and texture objects in 3D so as to achieve realism. As well as this, I developed my Photoshop skills and my ability to superimpose 2D images into a 3D scene. Overall, the final product was refined and visually interesting however, the bricks looked almost too perfect, which detracted from the realism.
