Μέσα από το Χάος Μορφές... σχόλια για την πρόσφατη στροφή στο έργο του Τάσου Μισούρα

Από το Χάος ακόμη δημιουργήθηκαν το Έρεβος κι η μαύρη νύχτα. Κι απ’ τη Νύχτα γεννήθηκε ο Αιθέρας κι η Ημέρα, που τα γέννησε σμίγοντας ερωτικά με το Έρεβος. Η Γη πρώτα γέννησε τον γεμάτο αστέρια Ουρανό, ίσο με 6

αυτήν να την καλύπτει από παντού και να είναι για πάντα ασφαλής τόπος για τους μακάριους θεούς. Και γέννησε τα ψηλά Όρη, χαριτωμένους τόπους των Νυμφών, των θεαινών που κατοικούν στα δασωμένα βουνά. [...] Μετά απ’ αυτούς γεννήθηκε ο δόλιος Κρόνος, ο φοβερώτερος απ’ όλους τους γυιούς, που μίσησε τον θαλερό γονιό του. Και γέννησε μετά τους Κύκλωπες με την ατρόμητη καρδιά, τον Βρόντη, τον Στερόπη και τον ορμητικό Άργη, οι οποίοι έδωσαν στον Δία τη βροντή και έφτειαξαν τον κεραυνό. Ησίοδος, «Θεογονία».

Είναι διαφορετική η τελευταία δουλειά του Τάσου Μισούρα. Οι οικείες, συνήθως γυναικείες μορφές με τα μεγάλα πρόσωπα, εμφανίζονται μέσα από ένα χαοτικό σύμπαν. Αυτό το χάος είναι άλλοτε ένα ζωγραφικό χάος, κοντά αλλά και μακριά τόσο από την αφαίρεση όσο και από την αναπαράσταση, ίσως παρόμοια με τη ζωγραφική του Turner, και άλλοτε ένα αρχιτεκτονικό χάος σαν οι μορφές να βγαίνουν από ένα ισοπεδωμένο τοπίο, μια μεταπυρηνική καταστροφή, ένα πολικό κρύο. Είναι, νομίζω, το πιο δυσοίωνο όραμα στη ζωγραφική του Μισούρα. Οι γοτθικές ατμόσφαιρες της παλιότερης δουλειάς του καλλιτέχνη, μ’ έναν παράδοξο τρόπο, παραμένουν, όμως μια ακόμη πιο χειμερινή ατμόσφαιρα υπερκαλύπτει το κλίμα του Γερμανικού Ρομαντισμού και τα παραμύθια και τα ξωτικά των παλιών έργων. Ίσως, σε μια γκροτέσκα γεωγραφική παρομοίωση, ο Μισούρας μετακινήθηκε ακόμη βορειότερα των σκανδιναβικών τοπίων προς τον πολικό βορρά... Όμως, είναι ίσως προφανές, αυτό το δυσοίωνο κλίμα ταιριάζει γάντι με την οικτρή οικονομική και ψυχολογική κατάσταση αυτής της χώρας. Και αλλίμονο αν ένας καλλιτέχνης δεν λειτουργεί ως βαρόμετρο των κοινωνικοπολιτικών καταστάσεων του καιρού του για να πιάνει το κλίμα (Zeitgeist). Πριν δέκα περίπου χρόνια, πριν ξεσπάσει αυτή η κρίση, το Μουσείο Φρυσίρα είχε παρουσιάσει μια αναδρομική έκθεση του Μισούρα που κάλυπτε περίπου 21 χρόνια δουλειάς και συνοδευόταν από έναν ογκωδέστατο κατάλογο. Ήταν η πρώτη τέτοια παρουσίαση ενός ζωγράφου της γενιάς του Μισούρα και, απρόσμενα,

γνώρισε πολύ μεγάλη αποδοχή. Οι απορίες ήταν πολλές: πώς ένας τόσο νέος ζωγράφος είχε τέτοιο σώμα δουλειάς αλλά και ανάλογη ωριμότητα; Πώς ένας νεοέλληνας ζωγράφος με τη, συνήθη για τη γενιά του, μετεκπαίδευση στο εργαστήριο Cremonini στη Beaux Arts στο Παρίσι απέπνεε μια τόσο σκοτεινή, βορειοευρωπαϊκή μελαγχολία; Σχετικά με το τελευταίο, ο καλλιτέχνης πάντα δήλωνε πως ποτέ δεν ένιωσε περιορισμένος από γεωγραφικούς προσδιορισμούς και πως οι αναφορές του ήταν βορειοευρωπαϊκές, γερμανικές συχνά. Σήμερα, στην εποχή της βαθειάς οικονομικής κρίσης και της γερμανικής “εποπτείας” δεν είναι δημοφιλές να κάνει κανείς τέτοιες αναφορές όμως οφείλουμε όλοι να διαχωρίζουμε την ιστορική και πολιτισμική διάσταση. Είμαστε όλοι λίγο Γερμανοί λόγω του Μπαχ και του Μπετόβεν, του Ντίρερ και του Όττο Ντιξ. Για τον Μισούρα αυτό το βορειοευρωπαϊκό όραμα είναι πάνω απ’ όλα ζωγραφικό και 8

φιλοσοφικό: η Μελαγχολία όπως την ορίζει εικαστικά ο Ντίρερ διαπερνά το σύνολο του έργου του. Δεν είναι μυστικό εξάλλου, και έχει αναφερθεί από μελετητές του έργου του Μισούρα, η βαθειά σχέση με τους Συμβολιστές και Προραφαηλίτες ζωγράφους του 19ου αιώνα. Σε μια εξαιρετικά δύσκολη εποχή (γενικά) και ιδιαιτέρως για την αναπαραστατική ζωγραφική, η οποία μεταπολεμικά γνώρισε απαξίωση και χλεύη, θυελλώδη ανταγωνισμό στο πεδίο της από τη φωτογραφία, μεταμοντέρνες παλινορθώσεις και επιστροφή στη μόδα και το χρηματιστήριο της τέχνης, εκ νέου κρίση και παραμερισμούς και, τέλος, πιο σοφά ίσως κατά τη γνώμη μας, εστίαση της στρατηγικής της σε λίγους καλλιτέχνες, οι οποίοι ζωγραφίζουν μετά από βαθειά σκέψη και προβληματισμό και προτείνουν κάποιες λύσεις, πρέπει να είμαστε προσεκτικοί και ακριβείς. Ξεχάστε, αν σας είναι δυνατόν, την πληροφορία ότι ο Τάσος Μισούρας θα πρέπει να καταχωρηθεί στους ζωγράφους της λεγόμενης “γενιάς του ’90” (ή μηπως του τέλους του ’80;) που σπουδάζουν με τον Γιάννη Μόραλη και τον Δημήτρη Μυταρά στην Ανώτατη Σχολή Καλών Τεχνών και μετά κάνουν μεταπτυχιακά με τον Leonardo Cremonini στην Ecole des Beaux Arts στο Παρίσι. Ξεχάστε το, αν μπορείτε. Ο Μισούρας είναι μια εξαιρετικά ιδιόμορφη καλλιτεχνική περίπτωση, γεμάτη με Ετεροτοπίες (φαινομενικά μοιάζει εκτός τόπου στην μεσογειακή και πολυπολιτισμικήΑθήνα) και ίσως (δεν είμαστε απόλυτα σίγουροι γι’ αυτό) Ετεροχρονίες. Στη ζωγραφική του κυριαρχεί ο ανθρωποκεντρισμός, σε τέτοιο βαθμό που σπάνια τον συναντάμε σε καλλιτέχνες της γενιάς του. Τα μουντά χρώματα (;) έκαναν πολλούς να μιλούν για “βορειοευρωπαϊκή ατμόσφαιρα”. Στα τελευταία έργα του εμφανίζεται το στοιχείο του non finito -σκόπιμα ατελείωτα έργα, τα οποία δίνουν έμφαση ίσως στο κυριώτερο όπλο που είχε πάντα ο Μισούρας ως ζωγράφος, στο εξαιρετικό σχέδιο. Και μετά υπάρχουν οι μισουρικές ιδιαιτερότητες όπως η εμμονή με το ανθρώπινο πρόσωπο, το γυναικείο κυρίως. Περισσότερο από ποτέ, η πρόσφατη δουλειά του ζωγράφου εστιάζει στα πρόσωπα, τα οποία ζωγραφίζει δυσανάλογα μεγάλα σε σχέση με τα σώματα, ίσως για να τους δώσει ακόμη μεγαλύτερη έμφαση. Αυτά τα γυναικεία πρόσωπα, παρότι συνήθως εκτυφλωτικά όμορφα, σε κάνουν να ορκίζεσαι ότι από κάπου τα ξέρεις, τα γνωρίζεις, κάπου τα έχεις συναντήσει, δεν μπορεί παρά να ανήκουν σε αληθινό άτομο. Τα ίδια τα σώματα διαστρέφο-

νται, παραμορφώνονται, λυγίζουν, στρίβουν, ακροβατούν σε μια παρά φύσει ισορροπία. Μια άλλη μισουρική ζωγραφική ιδιατερότητα είναι οι δυσαναλογίες στην κλίμακα μεταξύ των πρωταγωνιστών των συνθέσεών του. Οι φιγούρες, μ’ έναν τελείως παράδοξο τρόπο, μεγαλώνουν και μικραίνουν. Ο καλλιτέχνης μοιάζει να ζωγραφίζει εδώ και είκοσι χρόνια τη δική του εκδοχή της Αλίκης στη Χώρα των Θαυμάτων για ενηλίκους, σκοτεινή και γοτθική. Ένας ζωγραφικός Tim Burton για σοβαρούς θεατές. Η ατμόσφαιρα, τα σκηνικά και τα κοστούμια, τρόπον τινά, άλλοτε μοιάζουν με ελισαβετιανές μπαρόκ συνθέσεις και άλλοτε παραπέμπουν σε κάτι εφιαλτικά σύγχρονο. Τα τελευταία χρόνια ο Μισούρας μπλέκει στη δουλειά του στοιχεία, φαινομενικά, άσχετα με το ζωγραφικό πλάνο, εμβόλιμα, ένθετα “συννεφάκια”, αναφορές πιθανόν στα κόμικς ή στα μηχανολογικά σχέδια. Άλλο καινούργιο στοιχείο στην τελευταία περίοδο του ζωγράφου είναι η παρουσία λέξεων, είτε ως επιγραφές σε κτίρια της σύνθεσης, είτε κατ’ ευθείαν πάνω στην επιφάνεια, εμβόλιμα όπως τα συννεφάκια που λέγαμε παραπάνω. Αυτά τα νέα στοιχεία φέρνουν τον έλληνα καλλιτέχνη πιο κοντά στους ζωγραφικούς προβληματισμούς του καλιφορνέζου Robert Williams και του περιοδικού του, Juχtapoz αλλά και τη βορειοευρωπαϊκή και ανατολική (με την έννοια του τέως “ανατολικού μπλοκ”) ζωγραφική του γερμανού Neo Rauch. Δεν υπάρχει αμφιβολία ότι ο Τάσος Μισούρας είναι ένας καλλιτέχνης που εξελίσσεται. Δεν έχω καμία αμφιβολία ότι θα συνεχίσει να εξελίσσεται. Και έχω μεγάλη αγωνία προς ποια κατεύθυνση θάναι αυτή η εξέλιξη... Θανάσης Μουτσόπουλος

From Chaos, Forms… comments on the recent turn in Tassos Missouras’ work

From Chaos came forth Erebus and black Night; but of Night were born Aether and Day, whom she conceived and bare from union in love with Erebus. And Earth first bare starry Heaven, equal to herself, to cover her on every side, and to be an ever-sure abiding-place for the blessed gods. And she brought forth long Hills, graceful haunts of the goddess-Nymphs who dwell amongst the glens of the hills. Tassos Missouras’ last work is different. The familiar, usually female, forms with the big faces emerge from a chaotic universe. This chaos is sometimes a pictorial chaos, close to, but at the same time, away from both the abstraction and the representation, perhaps similar to Turner’s painting, and occasionally an architectural chaos, as if the forms rise from a landscape leveled to the ground, a nuclear disaster, a polar cold. It is, I reckon, the most ominous vision in Missouras’ painting. The gothic atmospheres of the artist’s former work paradoxically remain. However, a more wintery atmosphere overshadows the climate of the German Romanticism and the fairy tales and elves of old works. Perhaps, in a grotesque geographical metaphor, Missouras migrated even more to the north of the Scandinavian landscapes towards the polar north…

Nevertheless, as it is probably obvious, this ominous climate fits perfectly to the dismal financial and psychological state of this country. Alas for the artist who does not function as a barometer of the social-political conditions of his time in order to grasp its spirit (Zeitgeist). About ten years ago, before this crisis broke out, the Frissiras Museum had hosted a retrospective exhibition of Missouras’ paintings that covered almost 21 years of his work and was accompanied by a bulky catalog. It was the first such exhibition of a painter of Missouras’ generation and, unexpectedly, was very well received. However, numerous questions arose: how did such a young painter have such a body of work, of such maturity?

How did a contemporary Greek painter, with the, usual for his generation, additional training at the Cremonini studio in the Beaux-Arts in Paris emit such a dark, north-european melancholy? Regarding the latter, the artist always claimed that he never felt restricted by geographical determinations, and that his references were north-european, often German.

Today, in the era of deep financial crisis and German “supervision”, it is not popular for someone to make such remarks, however, we all ought to dissociate the historical from the cultural dimension. We are all part German, because of Bach and Beethoven, Dürer and Otto Dix. For Missouras, this north-european vision pertains, above all, to painting and philosophy: Melencolia, as is pictorially defined by Dürer, permeates his whole work. It is no secret, moreover, and it has been reported by those who study Missouras’ work, that there exists a profound connection between him and the Symbolist and Pre-Raphaelite painters of the 19th century.

In an extremely difficult era in general, and particularly for representational painting, which after the war was met with depreciation and scorn, faced tumultuous competition in its own field by photography, went through metamodern restorations and came back into fashion and the stock exchange for art, experienced crisis and supersessions once again to finally, and more wisely in our opinion, focus its strategy on a few artists that paint after deep thought, examination and introspection and propose certain solutions, we have to be careful and accurate. Let go, if possible, of the information that Tassos Missouras should be cataloged to the painters of the so-called “generation of the ’90s” (or perhaps the end of the ’80s?) that study under Yannis Moralis and Dimitris Mytaras in the Athens School of Fine Arts and then pursue their graduate studies with Leonardo Cremonini in the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Forget it, if you can. Missouras is an extremely particular case of an artist, full of Heterotopies (he apparently seems out of place in the mediterranean, multicultural Athens) and maybe (we are not absolutely sure about that) Heterochronies. His painting is anthropocentric, in a degree seldom found in the artists of his generation. The dull colors (?) made many people talk of a “north-european atmosphere”. The element of non finito – deliberately unfinished works– appears in his latest works, which emphasize the greatest weapon Missouras has as a painter, his exquisite drawing.

And then, there are these “missouric” particularities, like his obsession with the human face, female mostly. More than ever, the recent work of the painter focuses on faces, which he paints disproportionally large with respect to their bodies, perhaps to emphasize them more. These female faces, though usually blindingly beautiful, make you swear that you know them from somewhere, you have met them before, they cannot but be faces of real people. The bodies themselves are twisted, distorted, bent, turned, they tightrope in an unnatural balance. Another “missouric” pictorial particularity is the disproportion of scale among the protagonists of his compositions. The figures grow and shrink, in a completely bizarre way. For the past twenty years, the artist seems to be painting his own version of Alice in Wonderland for adults, dark and gothic. A pictorial Tim Burton, for serious viewers. Occasionally, the atmosphere, set and costumes resemble in a way Elizabethan Baroque compositions, while sometimes they refer to something eerily contemporary.

In the last years, Missouras incorporates in his work elements apparently irrelevant to the pictorial plan, inset “little clouds”, references probably to comics or engineering drawings. Another new element in his latest period is the presence of words, either as signboards on buildings of the composition, or directly on the surface, insets like the aforementioned little clouds. These new elements bring the Greek artist closer to the pictorial quest of the Californian Robert Williams and his magazine, the Juxtapoz, but also to the north-european and eastern (in the sense of the former “Eastern Bloc”) painting of the German Neo Rauch. Undoubtedly, Tassos Missouras is an artist that evolves and I have no doubt that he will continue to do so. My greatest agony is which direction this evolution will take…
