TMJ disorder is common and can severely impact on quality of life NOVEMBER IS TMJ AWARENESS MONTH TMJD can be the cause of many symptoms, not just jaw pain, and it is known that more than 30% of adults suffer with TMJD, women more than men. PHYSIOTHERAPISTS TRAINED IN THE MANAGEMENT OF TMJD CAN CLINICALLY DIAGNOSE AND MANAGE THIS CONDITION. The first EXAMINATION includes taking a full history and a neuromuscular-skeletal, postural, lifestyle & dietary assessment is done. Particular attention is given to movement limitations and abnormalities, and areas of muscle spasm, in the neck and TMJ’s, and surrounding areas. A TREATMENT PROGRAM is designed specifically for each patient. The aims are to reduce symptoms and restore normal function & mobility. A MAINTENANCE PLAN is put in place to prevent recurrent episodes and manage any flare-ups or setbacks. This includes empowering the patient through education and awareness and providing them with the necessary tools to self-manage their condition and overall wellbeing. IN MOST CASES, A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO THE MANAGEMENT OF TMJD IS USED. A coordinated effort between the patient, the physiotherapist and a GP / Dentist / Orthodontist / Maxillofacial Surgeon and / or other practitioners, provides optimal results. Physiotherapy is important to the success of both surgical & non-surgical management of TMJD.
