HEN I WAS GROWING UP, I so looked forward to

the Fourth of July holiday. My family lived in a neighborhood on the south side of Milwaukee where neighbors knew each other and came together for times of celebration. The July 4th celebration was always a highlight, with a big parade ending at the local park and then picnics with games and contests, topping off the day with a fantastic fireworks display. All of the neighborhood kids were so excited and had a great deal of fun. Leading up to the 4th celebration, my parents, grandmother, sister, and I spent the prior night transforming our doll carriages into patriotic displays that we would push in the parade. Then we would be entered

into the bike and carriage decorating contests, which we won one year. What a thrill it was for two little girls to be recognized and awarded ribbons. It was a time of fond memories of family, neighborhood fun, and patriotic pride. I still look forward to the July 4th celebrations, especially the fireworks, and I still feel that patriotic pride I had as a child. Having lived overseas for a while when my husband was in the military, I had an opportunity to experience life in another country, and it helped me really appreciate our American way of life. So this July 4th, take the time to reflect on your freedoms and celebrate America, and take time to enjoy family while building memories for your kids that will last a lifetime. Happy Independence Day!

F YOU HAVE ever asked yourself the

question “Who really requires the services of a financial planner?”, the answer might be “you do.” Once believed to be the exclusive domain of the mega-wealthy, the truth is that each of us can potentially benefit from the services of a qualified and dedicated financial advisor. The uncertainties in today’s financial marketplaces combined with the accounting, tax, and legal complexities facing Americans of even modest wealth present a daunting task for most of us. In response to the need to plan for both the present and the future, many of us turn to online financial calculators, books, seminars, and a host of other tools that often create a feeling of uneasiness that results from this piecemeal approach. Successfully Navigating the Uncertainties in Wealth Management the professional advice of a financial planner, but selecting an advisor can be as challenging as creating a financial plan itself. There seems to be an endless line of professionals, most of who offer an à la carte menu of services that may address a particular client’s needs but ignores the necessity of a more comprehensive approach which recognizes the correlation that one important decision may have on other, seemingly unrelated areas of the client’s life. Heritage Investors, an independent wealth management firm based in Knoxville who was recently featured in Forbes magazine, has distinguished itself among its many clients as a trusted financial concierge company that provides the comprehensive approach to planning that is often neglected when creating a

financial roadmap for the future. In this issue of Everything Knoxville, we are pleased to feature this interview our staff writer, Michael Filut, conducted with Heritage Investors founders Justin Goodbread and Jim DeTar. EK: Justin, how is Heritage Investors different from the numerous financial planning companies already in existence? Justin: When we started our company in 2009, during the height of the financial crisis, we were determined to be different. We decided early on that we did not want to be all things to all people, but rather all things to a few. In the financial world, many advisors seek to just gather assets, sell products, or pitch their idea. These approaches often result in confused, angry, and disappointed clients. We recently listened to a new client


state, “I’m just another number to my advisor.” How unfortunate. At Heritage Investors, we intentionally keep our client/advisor ratio small, allowing us to create true, comprehensive wealth planning. We have built a network of trusted attorneys, CPAs, bankers, insurance agents, realtors, brokers, etc. who work with us to offer a comprehensive wealth management approach to our clients. Many of our clients are busy business owners or retirees. And while our clients are well educated, they choose to focus on business or recreational pursuits rather than trying to keep up with current interest rates, market trends, estate planning laws, tax reduction strategies, insurance changes, etc. We truly act as our clients’ “private CFO.” We work on behalf of our clients with our team of experts with the goal of building net worth for each of them. EK: You favor a more comprehensive approach to planning rather than the à la carte selection of services typically offered by many advisors. Why do you feel this is important? Jim: The world of finance has drastically changed in the last 15 years. There are many products, players, laws, regulations, etc. to contend with. Ignoring these complexities can be an extremely costly reality. We often see the effects of people who utilize this à la carte approach in some areas which can result in unintended consequences in other areas. We recently welcomed a new client into the Heritage Investors family that had been so focused on fees that they ignored the impact of higher taxation and lower interest rates in the other areas of their financial life, which cost them far more than the small amount of fees they were focused on. By introducing this holistic approach to our clients, we are able to demonstrate the larger picture so often ignored, including business profitability, business succession, buying and selling a business, taxation, estate, debt restructuring, debt elimination, and other critical areas of concern. EK: Describe your current client mix. Justin: We currently work with about 50% business owners and 50% retirees. Many of our clients are retired small business owners, including CPAs, attorneys, dentists, teachers, nurses, chiropractors, optometrists, veterinarians, CFOs, CEOs, financial advisors, bankers, law enforcement professionals, and trades people. We also advise current business owners, including pool contractors, sales professionals, retired coal miners, and building contractors. EK: You are both CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERS™. Help our readers to differentiate between CFPs® and other financial advisors. Justin: The CFP® is one of the most recognized and sought after financial designations an advisor can earn. In all of East Tennessee, there are fewer than 100 CFPs®. This comes as a surprise to many. EK: Many people are unaware that making a change, say to an investment or trust, can have a significant impact on, let’s say, their taxes. They are often unaware of the correlation that exists between these different areas of their lives when making these important decisions. How does your approach to planning help to avoid these unintended mistakes? Jim: Estate planning, investment planning, protection planning, business planning, retirement planning, education planning, and tax planning are all affected by a few factors. Because none of us can predict the future, planning must be nimble enough to adapt to future uncertainties. When we develop a wealth plan, the plan may incorporate many of the areas of planning mentioned or just a few and include multiple contingency plans. An area of great interest for business owners looking to retire or launch a new business in the future is the development of a “10 and Out” plan. This permits the business owner to accumulate enough wealth during the 10 year period to sell or transfer their business while providing for their retirement while minimizing their tax liability. EK: You recently provided guidance to a physician that saved him a significant (six digit) amount of money. Explain. Justin: Entrepreneurial physicians are savvy, kind, and intelligent and value the expertise of other professionals. However, they often seek the advice of their peers who themselves are not trained in business. This client worked hard to produce the necessary revenue required to meet his expenses, but he recognized that his approach to financial planning was piecemeal at best. We noticed that he could drastically reduce the interest on his loans by repositioning assets, so we sought offers from reputable lenders that significantly reduced his interest expense. In addition, we also discovered several other areas where improvements could be made, including a plan to increase his net income while working fewer hours, the discovery of an important error in his company’s retirement plan, gaps in both his business and personal insurance coverage, and creative financing resulting in a virtual interest-free loan. This client is now on a 10 year debt-free plan with a projected net worth in the millions. EK: Would you say that the savings or increased returns on investments that your clients experience generally offset the fees that a client will pay? Justin: We take the approach that a fee must be fair. We work closely with our clients to create a wealth management plan designed to maximize the return to our clients. When a client retains us, we enter into a relationship with one principle objective in mind, which is to help our clients achieve their quantifiable dreams. If we feel that our fee is an obstacle to achieving their goals, then the relationship is likely to fail. We are proud to state that we maintain a 100% client retention rate.

EK: How have your self-employment experiences helped you in assisting your selfemployed clients? Jim: Both Justin and I love being selfemployed. In fact, Justin, who has never received a W-2 form in his entire working career, has successfully launched and sold three businesses. Our experiences allow us to show our many self-employed clients how to grow and maximize their businesses. Because most business owners do not view their business as their largest asset, we guide the owner in maximizing the net profit of their business. EK: Is it true that you offer prospective clients complimentary consultations? Justin: Absolutely. Many of your readers probably think that a CFP® or Wealth Manager is only for the uber-wealthy. Nothing could be further from the truth. We routinely meet with prospective clients in our relaxed and non-sales charged environment, and we are grateful to our existing clients who routinely refer friends and family. S THE FATHER of four young

EK: Dr. Turner, many people probably share a rather generic view of the field of orthodontics, yet there have been major advancements in this area that benefit your patients. Describe some of these advancements for our readers. Dr. Turner: That’s very true. Most people, especially adults, think of orthodontics as the bulky metal braces of the past. But the orthodontic industry has definitely come a long way since our “metal mouth” time period. The braces we use today are much smaller and much more comfortable for our patients. We use special self-ligating Damon® brackets that move teeth even faster and require fewer adjustments than your traditional brackets. They also come in clear, which is a popular option among our teen and adult patients. In addition to the self-ligating brackets, we offer a completely “wireless” option called Invisalign®, which uses clear, removable aligners to straighten your teeth over time. As you can imagine, this is a top choice for adults. EK: The father of four children, how has the patience and understanding you’ve learned at home benefited you with your younger patients and their parents? Dr. Turner: Both at home and in the practice, we have a lot of fun. I can easily relate to 8

my patients and their parents. I understand the struggles that parents have of getting their kids to brush properly, so it’s important that we work as a team. At the end of the day, I know as well as they do that kids will be kids. But as a team, we can work together to make sure those smiles are cared for in the best way possible. EK: I think while many of our readers associate orthodontics with younger people, the truth is that a growing number of adults are seeking your professional services. Explain. Dr. Turner: Yes, that is very true. More adults today are choosing to get braces. The only regret they have is that they didn’t do it sooner. Braces today aren’t what they used to be. Treatment length is shorter, and if you opt for Invisalign®, no one will even know you are wearing them. Adults also benefit from improved self-confidence, which can lead to improvements in their professional and personal lives. EK: How important is the communication that both you and your associates have with all of your patients and the parents of your younger patients? Dr. Turner: As I mentioned, it’s important that we tackle treatment as a team. I want my patients and parents to understand what’s happening every step along the way and encourage them to ask questions. If my patients understand what we are doing and why, I find they are more compliant. And it definitely puts parents at ease having that open communication. Dr. Turner: Invisalign® is a way to straighten your teeth without braces. Instead, we use clear aligners that are essentially invisible and can be removed. This option is better suited for some people’s lifestyle and

can simplify treatment. We have successfully treated a number of patients throughout the years with Invisalign® and received the designation by Invisalign® as a Preferred Provider. EK: What words of encouragement can you offer parents whose children might require your services, or adults for that matter? Dr. Turner: Getting started with braces is extremely easy, and it’s not a decision you will regret. I have seen first-hand how braces can change a person. It’s amazing watching timid kids covering their mouths when they laugh transform into confident, outgoing teens during just a short period of time. It makes what we do that much more rewarding. n Sunday, July 10, First Farragut United Methodist Church, located at 12733 Kingston Pike in Knoxville, will present a concert of Tennessee Bluegrass music performed by The Jar Tippers. as a professional stained glass artist did I ever envision creating a stained glass art piece featuring the iconic Harley Davidson. Churches, landscapes, wildlife, you name it - but Harley Davidson? You had to be kidding. But as I drove daily to my studio off Lovell Road and past the Harley Davidson showroom and service center, I couldn’t help but notice the ongoing construction behind the Harley dealership. After a little investigation on my part, I learned that area entrepreneur, James Copeland, with the cooperation of Harley Davidson of Knoxville, was constructing a state-of-the-art outdoor concert theatre that would feature the best in musical entertainment, from today’s headliners to the best local and regional artists. When I learned that concert-goers would have to walk past my studio to attend the concerts, my own entrepreneurial instincts kicked in. I decided to place large light boxes in my existing exterior display windows that would allow me to feature my first ever Harley Davidson stained glass art. My research of Harley Davidson was a real eye opener. Instead of meeting the stereotypical bikers I had imagined, I met some of the kindest and most generous individuals from just about every walk of life that I have ever had the privilege of working with. I hope the stained glass art that I have created, which could not have been possible without the creative talents of my assistant, Louise Fry, will amaze you as it has the Back Porch on the Creek concert-goers. These individual creations feature incredible detail that describes the Harley Davidson culture, from the large number of riders with military backgrounds to the ever-popular U.S. Highway 129 and the famed “Dragon.” Of course stained glass art encompasses a great many areas of interest beyond these famed Harley Davidson related images, but this art will help you appreciate what the full potential the stained glass may represent for your home or office. Respecting the Stars and Stripes: American Flag Etiquette S

While the American flag is often an important part of these celebrations, many of us have questions about how to properly care for and display it. “Flag etiquette can be confusing,” said Mary “Dubbie” Buckler, Executive Director and National Secretary of the American Legion Auxiliary. “Many Americans want to show patriotism but do not know the standards of respect and traditions associated with flag flying.” The American Legion Auxiliary, the world’s largest women’s patriotic organization, helps to advance the mission of the American Legion, the nation’s largest veteran’s service organization, to provide service to veterans, military, and their families. The American Legion has played an important role in establishing the standards of flag etiquette since before the passing of the first national codes in 1923 and has worked diligently to uphold these historical standards. Today much of flag etiquette can be found in the Flag Code, official national rules regarding the American flag. “The American flag is meant to be enjoyed and celebrated,” said Buckler. “The American Legion Auxiliary is passionate about educating the public so they can do so with proper respect for the freedom and sacrifices it represents.” Buckler shares the following guidelines for using, displaying, and caring for the

American flag. Hoisting and lowering of the flag » The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously. » The flag of the United States of America is saluted or acknowledged by placing a hand over your heart as it is hoisted and lowered. » When lowered, the flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise. Manner of displaying the flag » The Flag Code states it is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. » When a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness. » The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all-weather flag is displayed. » The flag should be displayed vertically, whether indoors or out, and suspended so that its folds fall free as though the flag were staffed. » When displayed in a window of a home or a place of business, the flag should be displayed in the same way; that is, with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street. Storing and disposing of the flag » The Flag Code does not require any specific method of storage; however, over time it has become tradition to fold the flag into a

triangular shape like that of a three-corner hat with only the blue union showing. » When a flag is so worn that it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner. The American Legion frequently conducts flag retirement ceremonies, often on Flag Day, which is June 14. Flag etiquette was established to honor and pay tribute to our nation and its history. As such, certain uses of the American flag are considered disrespectful. The flag should never be: » Displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property. » Used as a drapery or for any other decoration. » Carried flat or horizontally but always aloft and free. » Used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything. » Used as apparel, bedding, or drapery. » Festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Standing tall as an emblem of justice, perseverance, valor, and honor, the American flag is an intricate part of what makes citizens proud to be American. As summer rays shine again and the flag takes its spotlight, it is important to educate yourself and others to show respect for the deep history and sacrifices this national symbol represents.

Superfoods Recipes with Chia Seeds Almond Strawberry Pudding » 2 cups almond milk » 1 cup strawberries » 1/2 cup chia seeds » 1/4 cup agave » 1 tsp vanilla » 1/2 tsp cinnamon Puree together almond milk with strawberries. Add other ingredients and let sit overnight in the refrigerator. If you want to make this a morning cereal, add 1/4 cup chia seeds instead plus 1/4 cup oatmeal (raw). Follow same directions. Before serving, you may top with raisins and coconut flakes.

Refreshing Chia Drink Take any of your favorite juice such as blackberry, pomegranate, or blueberry and add 2 tsp of chia seeds per cup of juice. Mix the juices together if desired. Add 2 tsp fresh squeezed lemon or 1 tsp fresh squeezed ginger juice. Let chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour. Top with fresh mint sprig.

Oatmeal Cookies » 2 cups rolled gluten-free oats » 1 cup coconut sugar » 2/3 cup almond flour » 2 Tbsp chia seeds » 1 tsp cinnamon » 1 tsp baking soda » 1 tsp apple cider vinegar » 1/2 tsp baking powder » 1/2 tsp sea salt » 2/3 cup applesauce » 3 Tbsp coconut oil » 1 cup dried cranberries » 1/2 cup chocolate or carob chips (optional) » 1/4 cup shredded coconut (optional) Preheat oven to 350. Place all dry ingredients plus vinegar in bowl. Stir in applesauce and coconut oil until mixed. Fold in cranberries, chocolate chips, and coconut flakes. Place cookies on sheet and bake 10-15 min until done.

what the name implies: They are foods that give strength, energy, good sleep, and are packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Want some of this? You should consider chia seeds if you are looking to feel better and improve you health. They are easy to use, may be substituted in many recipes for carbs, and add a boost of energy to your day. Chia seeds are now known to be one of the best superfoods. They are black seeds grown in South America that were part of the Mayan and Aztec cultures. Chia seeds are packed full of proteins, Omega 3 fats, vitamins, and minerals, all of which provide a performance boost when exercising, according to a new study. The research found that eating chia seeds intensified exercise performance for 90 minutes. Compare that to energy drinks, minus the sugar, and you have a much healthier alternative. Loaded with calcium and protein, chia seeds actually contain much more calcium than milk. One teaspoon of seeds contains 10% of our daily recommended dose of calcium. This of course helps promote bone health. Protein is another claim that makes this seed a superfood. Chia seeds are one of the best sources of vegetable protein – 14% protein overall, which is a very high ratio compared to most plants. One ounce of chia seeds has four grams of protein. Chia seeds also contain carbohydrates. In one ounce of seeds, there are 12 grams of carbs, which

is mainly fiber. In fact, out of the 12 grams, 11 are fiber. This fact makes this seed a very low calorie food. Also, the fiber is a definite plus for digestive health. Other notable mentions for this amazing superfood is that chia seeds contain phosphorous, manganese, magnesium, vitamins B1, B2, and B3, iron, and amino acids. Research shows that they help reduce blood pressure, bad cholesterol, and inflammation. Are you convinced yet? This tiny seed deserves recognition. You can add chia seeds to yogurt, granola, cereals, salad dressings, puddings, jello, muffins, drinks, and more. They can also be used as a topping for practically any food. My favorite is to add chia seeds to juice and let it sit. After a period of time, the chia seeds will swell and become a jelly-like consistency. Depending on how thick you like it to be, you can either make this into a pudding and eat with a spoon or add more juice and drink for a refreshing treat. Chia seeds truly deserve to be ranked on the top of the superfood list. With all that they have to offer, shouldn’t you give them a try? It’s not every food that supplies anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, weight loss capabilities, energy boost, ample amounts of protein and calcium helping with muscle and bone strength, B vitamins helping to calm the nervous system, and copious amounts of fiber to help our digestive system. Top all this with ease of preparation, and you have a superfood that is a must in any healthy regime.

often here at Knox Essential Oils. There are so many companies offering essential oils. It is often overwhelming trying to make an educated choice. This is why we are here. We want to give you the knowledge you need to make the right choice. Using essential oils even in the most basic way requires some knowledge and basic understanding of dos and don’ts. First of all, you need to understand that there are three grades of essential oils: » Synthetic: These are the fragrance oils and can potentially be toxic. They should NEVER be ingested. marginal health benefits. Unfortunately, even in this grade, inferior oils are sometimes used with profit in mind instead of safety and optimum health benefits. We are seeing more and more retailers and big-box stores offering selections in essential oils. This is scary, because most all of these oils are not pure, nor do they come with directions for use. There is not a knowledgeable person to help you understand how to use them. Although they may be “priced” attractively, should you do it? Certainly not. Essential oils used safely and responsibly have amazing benefits. In our search for the right essential oils for us, we arrived at the company we represent today. First and foremost, they have set a standard for purity in response to unregulated standards. They are beyond organic, which means they are verified pure and are free of pesticides, fillers, and contaminants. The plants that the oils come from are harvested in their native growing regions worldwide and

also where the therapeutic benefit is greatest. There is also stringent third party testing of every batch. In fact, a large percentage of oils do not meet company standards and they reject them. You want to choose a company that is transparent and provides safety data on their products, as well as advocates that will help you learn about essential oils and safety. Gallery on Main Introduces Artist Don Hill

new artist, painter Don Hill, into our family of local and regional artists and crafters that we call our home at the Gallery on Main in historic downtown Sweetwater. Don grew up in Sweetwater, and as a boy, he enjoyed copying the artist renderings displayed on the covers of Outdoor Life magazine. He went on to study art from Art Instruction in school, which inspired his interest in the field of art. After high school, Don attended the Harris School of Art, where he studied painting and drawing for the next two years. After two years in the Marine Corps, which included a tour of duty in Vietnam, he went on to attend the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and majored in fine art painting and design.

Don began his art career in Nashville as an illustrator and designer with Studio Six. In 1974, he moved to Chattanooga with his family and launched an art studio named Nova Graphic while continuing to take art classes at Chattanooga State. In 1978, he went to work with McKee Foods as a package designer and worked there for the next 34 years. Don retired in 2012. After his wife passed away that same year, he picked up his paints again and began painting landscapes, his first love. Don wants the viewers to experience not only a place, but the very feelings he felt at the moment when he captured the landscape on his canvas. “My paintings are about feeling,” he said. “When I start a painting, either in studio or plein air, I want the viewer to feel the moment that is on the canvas. Born in Jamestown, New York, on August 6, 1911, Ball went on to star and produce her own show, “I Love Lucy,” with husband Desi Arnaz. You can also visit Desilu Studios, nicknamed the “I Love Lucy” museum, to get an inside look at where the magic happened. The Importance of Layering Lighting I

T IS ALL TOO COMMON for

the standard home to have a single, dim fixture in the middle of the ceiling attempting to illuminate an entire room. When we have our initial design consultations, one of the top must-have changes we hear from clients is the strong desire to make the space brighter. The best way to create a beautifully lit space is to utilize multiple types of lighting in your home. What are the different types of light? Natural, accent, and task. Lighting is one of the most inf luential aspects of design. It is the final determining factor that can make or break a space. When planning a renovation, our designers always bring up the need to create a lighting plan. A lighting plan includes careful consideration of all layers of lighting and placement to accommodate tasks throughout the day. Natural light proves to have the

most positive effects on mood and overall atmosphere of the space. In order to get the most out of your natural light, you need to maximize the amount of space the light from every window touches. Removing walls that divide smaller rooms is a great way to brighten the interior of your home. Accent lighting is a helpful addition to our layered lighting plan and is also a fun way to decorate a space! Older homes tend to have one single light in the foyer that is mounted directly to the ceiling. This type of installation often only lights the ceiling around the fixture and leaves your foyer looking dim. An easy way to fix this is to hang a large pendant light in the foyer that illuminates the walls, floor, and ceiling. Other examples of accent lighting include table lamps, floor lights, and wall sconces. The final type of lighting needed to round out a layered lighting plan is task lighting.

Task lighting provides a well lit surface for activities that require close attention such as reading, food prep, and makeup application. Examples of task lighting include recessed lighting, under cabinet lighting, and makeup mirrors. A kitchen is an excellent platform to utilize all types of lighting. Be sure to use recessed lighting in areas of traffic, under cabinet lighting to help with food prep, and pendant lighting above the island to add visual appeal. Furnishing Your New Home: Map It Out Before Moving In WHEN

IT C O M E S to furnishings and designing the interiors of your new home, it pays to have a plan. Without one, you’re like a ship without a rudder – you may have a rough idea of where you want to go but may not have a clue how to get there. Having an idea ahead of time of the kind of look, color, and style you want for your interiors will save you headaches down the line. Here are some tips on how to come up with your interior plan: » Set a budget: Decide at the outset what you can and will invest. Determine the spaces (e.g., the family room) and the pieces (e.g., sofas or bedroom furniture) in which you’ll spend the most time, and build your budget around those. Don’t skimp on the sofa, but figure to save on smaller pieces like end tables and on accessories. » Focus on functionality: Do you want to dine in the dining room, or would that room work better as a library? What will you use the living room for? Assign a “purpose” to all the rooms before you attempt to furnish them. » Get out the tape measurer: Know the

size of the rooms, windows, and walls before you go scouting for the perfect piece. Also, don’t forget to measure your doorways. It won’t do you much good to buy big furniture pieces if you can’t get them into the rooms. » Pick your piece: Invest in a “signature” piece for each room and design around it. That item can be an antique cocktail table, desk, armoire, or just a piece of furniture with emotional value.

» Put things in perspective: A large sofa just doesn’t work in a tiny family room, nor does it look right to have only a small settee and two small armchairs in a twostory room. Furniture that’s too big overshadows a room; furniture that’s too small gets lost in it. » Hire a designer: What’s right for your space? What’s in, what’s out? What’s hot, what’s not? Summer Celebration Highlights Gardening with a Purpose

T

he theme of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture’s Summer Celebration Lawn and Garden Show is The Garden of Eatin’, with a focus on creatively adding more edibles to your landscape. Many of the 17 garden talks will provide tips for successfully adding fruits, vegetables, and herbs to ornamental flowerbeds and containers. Visitors can see edible landscape designs during guided tours of the UT Gardens Jackson, learn about proper plant selection, siting and maintenance, and pick up a few new culinary concepts. Visitors to Summer Celebration can also shop an extensive selection of hard-to-find trees, shrubs, and other perennials at the Master Gardener Plant Sale. Plus dozens of businesses will be on hand selling plants, lawn equip-

ment, garden art, and crafts. New this year, Summer Celebration will feature creations from members of the West Tennessee Artisan Trail. The Master Gardener Plant Sale and Exhibitor Tents open at 9 am. Garden talks begin at 10 am. Most sessions take place outdoors under spacious tents, but six talks are offered indoors in air-conditioned auditoriums. A wagon tour of the West Tennessee AgResearch Center departs every 30 minutes. HE FIRST HALF of this year

has certainly been a whirlwind! We have been busy here at work, and I am trying to get ready for my oldest daughter’s wedding on July 2nd. I don’t know if I am coming or going half the time! Oh well, let’s talk about gardening. After a mild winter, spring started off with a bang in March. April was also mild, and then May gave us cool and damp weather. June started out hot, so who knows what the summer will hold? Here is what the erratic weather may have done to your plants. » There was a fair amount of frost damage to plants even though our winter was relatively mild. This is because we had what is called a “soft” hardening off period. It was warm very late into the fall and winter, so the plants didn’t have that normal cold fall to “harden off ” or acclimate to the colder weather. Many were still actively growing when the cold weather hit in January, so that new growth got zapped. It is sort of like they walked into a freezer wearing shorts and a t-shirt. » The mild winter also means there was no big kill-off of the insects. They

emerged early and have been multiplying ever since. You really need to keep an eye on your plants so you can treat them before they are devoured. » Fungal spores were not killed off either. I have already seen a tremendous amount of powdery mildew and botrytis (grey mold) emerging. Even some plants that have been bred to be resistant to fungal problems are struggling. Many will do better when the heat of mid-summer gets here, but others will need an application or two (or 10) of a fungicide. Let’s talk about water for a little while, because some of you still have a lot of questions. We have no idea whether our summer will be dry or wet, so here is some basic information: » If it is dry, which means we are not getting at least 1” of rain each week, you need to water. Sprinkler systems are great for grass and annuals but do not provide adequate moisture for shrubs and trees, especially those that have been planted within the past year. Those will need a drip irrigation system or hand watering so the soil is watered deeply. Deep watering causes

deep roots to develop, which is what you want for larger plants. Newly planted trees and shrubs should be watered three times per week for at least two to three weeks. After that you can change to twice a week. » Early morning watering is best. Mid-day irrigation loses 60% of the water to evaporation, and late evening irrigation leaves water on the leaves, which can exacerbate fungal problems. » Mulch will help to hold moisture in the soil. Three inches is plenty! » If the summer is wet, there are other problems we will be dealing with. Many plants will start showing signs of fungal problems such as powdery mildew, leaf spot, and rust. You can help by removing affected leaves, cleaning up all leaves that fall, and treating with a fungicide. » Too much rain can lead to standing water in poorly drained areas, which can lead to root rot. If you have an area that tends to hold water, consider amending the soil or using a raised bed. » Watch for exposed roots, and cover them lightly with topsoil or compost and then mulch. » Stake plants that are leaning. Root balls actually shrink during wet weather, and trees can topple in the wind. If plants do blow over, gently push the roots back into the soil before staking. It is also important to remember to take the tie straps off once a plant has stabilized! I have seen too many trees that have simply grown around the tie straps because the owner forgot about them. This weakens the tree. » Summer is not a good time to prune or fertilize. Unless you have broken, diseased, or damaged branches, wait until fall. » Your containers and baskets may be looking a little ratty by now. Cut them back and add fertilize, or come in and get some new things to replace them with. » Keep harvesting those vegetables! Also, keep a close eye on them and watch for signs of disease and insects. It is also important to keep water levels stable, so run those soaker hoses regularly. If you are hand watering, try not to get water on the leaves. Have a wonderful summer, and stop by to see us! We are still getting new things in. Go play in the dirt!

will host the 29th annual Independence Day Parade on Monday, July 4, beginning at 9:30 am. The parade will begin on Kingston Pike at Lendon Welch Way (Farragut High School entrance) and continue to Boring Road, just east of Farragut Towne Square Shopping Center (old Ingles store site). This year’s grand marshal is Jeff Jacoby, Cumulus Media’s morning co-host of The Sports Animal. Entries have been submitted by groups such as businesses, community and civic organizations, area schools, and churches and will include the Farragut High School band, floats, animals, antique cars, dance groups, and elected officials. New this year, Fleet Feet Sports Knoxville will host the first annual Farragut Freedom Run 1 Mile and 2 Mile prior to the start of the parade. Preservation in Motion in Campbell County S TROLLING ALONG

Big Creek in the Ivydell community, just north of LaFollette, it is easy to imagine the area as perpetually untouched woods, home to a few private residences and the railroad overhead. Looking north from the creek, a row of semi-circular brick openings is visible underneath a blanket of vegetation and small trees. While these ruins could easily be overlooked by the casual passerby, in the early 1900s, they were a critical element of a thriving coal and iron industry. Officially incorporated in 1901, the LaFollette Coal, Iron, & Railway Company is the most significant industrial u n d e r t a k i n g i n Ca m p b e l l County history. Today its presence is only visible in a few rows of brick coke oven ruins. The LaFollette coke ovens are the last standing structures of an enormous coal and iron industry that defined LaFollette and Campbell County. A necessary element in any successful coal mining operation, coke ovens turned lessergrade coal into a coke, a residue crucial in the production of pig iron. Low-grade bituminous coal was extracted from area mines and cleaned in a coal-washer before being burnt in brick ovens to produce coke. The LaFollette ovens were constructed in a “beehive” shape used throughout Tennessee in the 19th and 20th centuries. Ovens were built in single or double batteries against a natural land bank or retaining wall, and the spaces surrounding the domeshaped ovens were infilled with dirt. Ovens had a round hole at the top for loading coal and releasing exhaust and a semicircular opening in the front for removal of the finished product. Similar ovens can be detected through the brush and tree growth of old coal mining sites throughout the Cumberland Plateau area of East and Middle Tennessee, including the Dunlap coke ovens in Sequatchie County and the Glen Mary coke ovens in Scott County. In Campbell County, these ovens were a centerpiece of the LaFollette Coal, Iron, & Railway Company. The LaFollette Coal, Iron, & Railway Company was founded by an Indianabased educator and engineer named Harvey LaFollette in the early 1890s, when LaFollette purchased more than 58

30,000 acres of land around Big Creek Gap. LaFollette envisioned a wide-reaching industrial system that incorporated multiple iron and coal mines, a blast furnace, a limestone quarry, coke ovens, and railroads. He spent the 1890s developing the backbone of his success: A functioning community, named the Town of LaFollette, in 1894. By 1897, Harvey LaFollette had connected the town to the Southern Railway line. In 1900, the town’s population was 366, and it rose to 3,056 by 1920. The town of LaFollette’s growth in the early 20th century was mirrored in the Coal, Iron, & Railway Company’s success and in the wide production of the coke ovens. By 1903, all 293 coke ovens were constructed in LaFollette and divided into east and west sections of double batteries. Campbell County was among the top coke producing counties in Tennessee until 1924, when the Coal, Iron, & Railway Company’s iron furnace closed and the coke ovens were abandoned. The area has served as a garbage dump, a city water plant, and a dog pound in the ensuing decades, and the coke ovens have fallen to ruin. Despite the vegetation covering the coke ovens, the strong workmanship of the craftsmen who designed and built the ovens is obvious today. The LaFollette coke ovens

are in the process of being nominated to the National Register of Historic Places as the last standing representation of a coal mining enterprise that founded the town of LaFollette and thrived for almost three decades. The land surrounding the west battery of coke ovens was recently acquired by the Campbell County Historical Society, and a Recreational Trails Program Grant will fund a historic trailhead and interpretive program in the area. The National Register nomination for the LaFollette coke ovens is complemented by other exciting preservation activities occurring in Campbell County. Until this year, Campbell County was one of the last remaining counties in Tennessee to benefit from a countywide historic architectural survey. Funded in part by a grant from the Tennessee Historical Commission, preservation consultants from Thomason and Associates of Nashville have been attentively documenting all historic structures throughout the area. This project will result in a detailed report and digital mapping on the Tennessee Historical Commission’s online database. To top it off, the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance is hosting one of Knox Heritage’s popular Summer Suppers at Norris Dam in Rocky Top on July 30. This event will celebrate Norris Dam’s 80th birthday and the first time the dam has been open to the public since 2001. For more information, visit www.knoxheritage.org.

New Exhibitions Now Open at the Emporium Center THE ARTS & CULTURE ALLIANCE

is pleased to present five new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from July 1-29. Most of the works are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition. Townsend Artisan Guild: A Sense of Community in the Downstairs Gallery The Townsend Artisan Guild presents the works of its artists depicting the theme “A Sense of Community: Portrait of Small Towns and City Life.” Fiber artists, painters, photographers, sculptors, and woodworkers will exhibit their representation of communities and the environments they consider home. Each individual values different aspects of community life and the surroundings that make each community unique, and each artist presents his own unique interpretation. Sculpture by Ty Crisp in the Balcony Gallery As a third generation carpenter, Ty Crisp’s career began at an early age, from working in his grandfather’s shop to assisting his father in the field. In 1995, he traveled around the southeast constructing timber frame and log homes. In 1997, he moved to Charleston, SC, where he maintained and restored historical downtown homes. Returning to Tennessee, Ty dedicated himself to mastering cabinetry and finish carpentry. His love of woodworking quickly evolved into furniture making, joinery, and design. Upon opening his first studio in 2004, he began experimenting in metal work, concrete, and stone. This combination of elements became a catalyst for interior and exterior design concepts. Renee Suich: Small Stories in the Display Case Renee Suich creates mixed media art, including collages inspired by nature, history, and the energy that surrounds us all. Early years spent in design were further fostered by time spent working at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Her work has been referred to as “Heritage Collage,” as she incorporates vintage imagery in a contemporary composition. Renee now resides in East Tennessee and enjoys experimenting with new media, including encaustic work. Different mediums, like encaustic work, allow her to explore color and texture in a new way.

Daniel Taylor: Faces of Jazz on the North Wall Daniel Taylor has been passionate about photography for more than half of his life. Daniel is a self-taught artist who is influenced by Peter Turnley, Elliot Erwitt, and others in the world of Street Photography. He enjoys shooting casual portraits outdoors or in his home studio. Other favorite images include live musical performances

and architectural angles. Daniel’s exhibition includes black and white photographs of jazz artists on stage. The music played in jazz is filled with the soul of the player. Daniel also feels there is a visible emotion with the artist, which is expressed through his/her body language, grins, and grimaces. Service, Sacrifice, Honor by Cheryl Sharp in the Atrium Cheryl Sharp is a Knoxville native and a graduate of the University of Tennessee’s College of Business. Her love of photography began as a passion to document the lives of her large family. Cheryl photographs everything from Friday night football to friends and family, travel, and nature. Cheryl’s personal favorite is close to home: Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Celebrating the July 4th holiday and honoring the men and women of our military, “Service, Sacrifice, Honor” is a small selection of photographs of those serving their nation and the families supporting them. Several images are representative of the sacrifice of past service and those who continue to honor their memory every day. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. represents many things to many people. First and foremost, she’s primarily known as a prolific and masterful songwriter and performer. Her lyrics reach to the depths of the listener’s soul and causes them to think deeper than they ever have before on whatever Etheridge is singing about. All of that has resulted in close to 14 million domestic album sales, earning her several platinum and gold records. She’s an iconic gay rights activist and has been very bold in her support of the gay community and, likewise, they’ve been unabashedly loyal to her. Others see Melissa as a courageous and

victorious cancer survivor, and rightly so. Etheridge is also a committed environmentalist. Her celebrity has given her the platform to promote clean, smart energy. It is because of the first point – and her performance this month at Knoxville’s historic and beautiful Tennessee Theatre – that I was able to chat with Ms. Etheridge. I started the interview by asking how preparations for the tour were going. I was given a surprising glimpse into her personal life. “It’s great,” she said. “Right now I’m in my quiet time. I’m getting the kids finished up at school. I’m at home. That’s me prepping to go on the road, making sure that my teenagers are all set for the summer and that everybody is good.” When I gasped that her kids are already teenagers (not realizing that THAT much time has elapsed since they entered her life), she gasped back by saying, “One of them is in college! She just finished her first year at Columbia University! Just amazing!” I asked her what Knoxville and other stops on this tour can expect at the shows. “I’m kind of doing a couple of things this summer,” she said. “I’m touring with Pat Benatar. That’s 90 minutes of the hits and we’re hitting it like that. The Knoxville stop will be my own show. What’s new about this is it’s a new configuration of musicians for me. I have played with three other pieces. I’ve played with five piece bands. I’ve played with symphonies. But this show is going to be a trio. It’s me, drums, and bass. “Because I’ve been doing my solo shows, I’ve gotten really strong in my guitar playing. So, I said, ‘Look, I want to see what it’s like to move into this

feel,’ which I always rely on another guitar player or something else to fill it up. So, I go, ‘Let me see if I can go more into the Jimi Hendrix/Nirvana kind of space.’ “I’m using a Nashville guy. David Santos is going to play bass, and he’s just an amazing bass player. I’ve got Brian Delaney on drums, so it’s going to be another new way of hearing some of the hits you love. It allows me to really explore my own musicianship and re-imagine some of these songs. I’m really excited about it – a little scared, but that’s good!” If you go to Melissa’s website, www. I asked her about it. “Ah, it’s going to be so much fun!” she said. “We’re going from Tampa, Florida, to Key West, then across the Gulf to Cozumel, Mexico, and then back. It’s all about music. There’s a lot about health; taking care of ourselves. It’s going to be a blast! It’s my very first cruise I’ve hosted, so I’m really looking forward to it!” As for what is on her radar for the near term besides the tour, Melissa shared: “Next year! Speaking of Tennessee, I went down to Memphis at the beginning of the year. I went to Willie Mitchell’s old studio – Royal Studios – and I recorded with the High Rhythm Section. I’m re-imagining some Stax songs. They’ve opened up and allowed me to use the Stax label. I made a Stax record. We’re actually mixing it right now. Vance Powell is actually mixing it down in Nashville. A lot of Tennessee influence on this next record!” When I suggested that she has to do a blues album sometime, Etheridge replied: “You’re gonna get some blues on this record. You’re gonna hear it! You’re finally going to hear me say, ‘That’s right!’ It all came from the blues. It’s where it all came from!” I then asked: Looking many years ahead, when you’ve stepped off the tour bus at the great gig in the sky, how do you want to be remembered, and what do you hope your legacy will be? “Ah! I want people to say, ‘God, she made a difference! Because she was here, life was a little sweeter. Jill, who has taught at Ritta Elementary for 11 years, has been named Knox County’s Middle School Teacher of the Year. “To be chosen as a representative for the teachers of Knox County Schools is an amazing, yet incredibly humbling experience,” said Jill. “In our schools, there are so many hard working, intelligent, fiercely dedicated, and wonderful teachers who also deserve this award. I am just simply one among countless outstanding educators who work for Knox County Schools and the State of Tennessee.” Jill has taught for a total of 20 years. She earned her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. “Teaching runs very deep over several generations within my extended family,” said Jill. “As a child, since my mother was a teacher, I grew up in the school environment and loved it! I had great exposure to the inner workings of many dedicated and wonderful teachers from elementary 64

school through high school. I witnessed first-hand the importance of their jobs and the immediate differences educators could make in a young person’s life.” Jill says she especially loves teaching fifth graders. “The age is just perfect for me,” she said. “They are growing more independent and yet they still want to please their teacher. Fifth graders are naturally inquisitive and have the desire to learn information more deeply. They are able to make amazing connections from newly acquired information to information they have experienced or seen within their environment. Fifth graders are also at an age where they understand humor more deeply, and they are developing their own unique sense of humor as well. Most of all, they are still more than willing to give away great hugs!” Like many teachers, Jill says her greatest challenge is finding the time to do everything. “The greatest challenge of all is time: Time in the classroom to teach skills, time

Devoted and caring teachers are constantly working far too many hours just trying to keep up with the basic requirements and expectations of this very important profession.”

The Leap of Leadership JULY IS AN EXCELLENT TIME

to reflect on the topic of leadership. While there are many leaders, few are as deserving of honor and respect like those who selfishly serve our country. For 200-plus years, many leaders stood in the gap to defend our freedoms. Thanks does not seem enough as we celebrate another anniversary of the birth of our still young country. Leadership is exhibited, however, not just by military heroes of public figures, but by ordinary men and women in positions of influence over others. My first experience with a leap of leadership was when, as a young working woman, my boss took me “under his wing.” Though his methods were often harsh, he put me in fast-forward leadership class from day one. He apparently recognized a drive within my character, and he felt compelled to help me learn life lessons quickly. My youthfulness and lack of experience were obvious. Yet he took it upon himself to teach me by his example what it took to lead well. My commitment was quickly tested as a junior executive. Writing and rewriting quarterly reports for investors took most

of my weekends. Studying profit and loss statements and being able to answer for every dollar was expected monthly. My boss would call and ask questions, and he expected ready answers. At the time I wanted to complain, though I never once did to my co-workers, because I was to become their leader. “Your title won’t make you their boss; you must earn their respect,” my mentor would say to me regularly. Trying to lead those often older than me, I had to pay my dues by working hard and proving I had actual ability and knowledge of the company’s goals and objectives. It was a difficult season - one I now look back on with an attitude of gratitude. We all have deficiencies - things we need to overcome. Stepping into leadership will cause these deficiencies to surface, which is often viewed as negative. Yet how will you know where to grow if someone is not there to help shape your character? Had this one man not forced me to learn my craft by challenging me, my professional growth would not have happened, because my character had to be shaped into a real leader

others would follow. Many of us are in positions of leadership. We must be willing to take the time to recognize talent and train another into a successful professional. People come from many backgrounds, and some seem unlikely candidates to become leaders themselves. But if one has a drive to succeed while demonstrating a willingness to learn and work hard, as influencers we owe it to identify these people as a candidate worthy of training. Take the leap of leadership. Lead others or adopt a teachable spirit that allows you to accept mentoring. Such skills are not only the backbone of business and the entrepreneurial drive, but will help foster relationships in life that are based in depth, growth, and a greater level of intimacy. Jump in! Tips for a Long Distance Marriage SOMETIMES

there is no way around it and couples find themselves inside a long distance marriage. Whether the distance is due to one of the individuals being in the military, being relocated through work, having long-term travel requirements due to a career, extended family obligations, or any other good reason, the distance is hard on both parties. If anyone tells you otherwise, they are lying. Here are some tips that can help you and your partner make the best of a bad situation. Talk as Often as Possible Couples should try to talk to each other every day, if it is possible. However, this doesn’t mean that you hang on the phone for hours on end. Share the events, thoughts, and feelings about your day, discuss the topics you want/need to discuss, let your partner do the same, and then get off the phone. The sharing might take 10 minutes or an hour or more. However long it takes, you and your partner should not feel obligated to hang on the phone past this point in an attempt to

make up for the distance. If possible, try to talk with your partner via Skype or webcam. Seeing your partner while you are talking can go a long way in helping you both feel close. Be Reasonable When you are talking with your partner, don’t feel like every conversation you have has to be deep and serious. Even mundane conversations about miscellaneous, random things you both experienced or did while apart will help you both stay plugged-in to each other’s day. Give the Benefit of the Doubt It is easy to get stressed out and cranky when you are away from your partner. This can result in acting snappish or flippant when you do talk with your partner. If you or your partner snap at each other, take a deep breath and then give each other the benefit of the doubt. Inquire as to whether your partner is genuinely upset with you or if the distance, lack of sleep, or some other issue is causing the frustration. Don’t Focus on the Negative Being in a long distance marriage isn’t fun,

and it can be hard to find any positives about the situation. However, if you spend the time you do have to communicate bemoaning how terrible the separation is and continually talking about how hard life is, the chances are high that your partner will soon grow tired of communicating with you. Surprises Do something special for your partner as a surprise. This is always a positive in a long distance marriage. Surprises can be something small like mailing a card, sending an eCard, putting together a care package and shipping it, recording a video and sending it, keeping a journal and mailing it at the end of each month, and so on. Signing the Declaration of Independence was extremely dangerous - a treasonable act, punishable by death. Not one man who signed the Declaration of Independence was born in America. The most famous extract from this document is “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” Wow! I love revisiting our nation’s history and being reminded of sacrifice, sacred callings, and greatness. Sometimes it feels like we’re losing our loyalty to our country, our heritage, our freedom. How do we lose things that are so priceless and important to us? Well, I believe it starts when we stop remembering, stop learning, and stop being interested. When’s the last time you asked 66

your dad, grandfather, brother, or uncle to share an experience they had while serving our country? When’s the last time you read the constitution? Have you ever read the Declaration of Independence to your children? Parents, we have to keep the spirit of freedom and honor alive in our children by honoring those who have given so much in order to protect our freedoms. Generations ago the understood way to give honor to your family and heritage was to live an honorable life. This has not changed; we just don’t talk about it anymore. As we teach our children that living their life with integrity, honor, respect for country and man, and love for the entire human family, our children will be better prepared to continue the legacy of paying tribute to this great nation and the principles that it stands for. Etiquette plays a role in honoring oneself, one’s family, and one’s nation. Allow me to remind you of the definition of etiquette. Etiquette is helping those around us feel

valued and comfortable through our words a n d a c t i o n s . Whether we like it or not, or whether we mean to or not, we are constantly sending messages to those around us of how we feel about them. How beautiful life would be if each day our goal was to show value to those we come into contact with. What honor! What greater way to show our gratitude for our life, for our freedom, and for this nation but to honor one another each and every day through kind acts of service and kind words.
