Sweetwater Hospital Association is Regionalizing FREE

Volume 21, No. 6, Section A

June 2021

“S

weetwater Hospital Association is the hospital for Monroe County and should be the primary place for patients to receive comprehensive care.” - Ian McFadden, CEO Ian McFadden, D. Sc., CEO, is an experienced, senior level healthcare and business executive with an accomplished background of leading and providing transformative change for over 35 years. Dr. McFadden, who is originally from Tuskegee, Alabama, comes to Sweetwater from Melbourne, Florida. He has an extensive background in hospital leadership having previously served as CEO of the Methodist Hospitals in Gary, Indiana and CEO of Roseland Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. He worked extensively with rural and community-based hospitals and is uniquely qualified to take on the challenges here at Sweetwater Hospital Association. Dr. McFadden is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, received numerous recognitions from various healthcare organizations, and lectured nationally at several conferences. Dr. McFadden holds a Doctorate from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) as well as Master’s Degrees from UAB and the University of Memphis. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Alabama. Dr. McFadden served on Boards of various community agencies at the local and regional level including: the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, United Way, The Boy Scouts of America,

Dr. Ian McFadden, CEO

Big Brothers and Big Sisters, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, and the Alzheimer’s Association. Dr. McFadden, who prefers to be called Ian (yon), is married to Angela and they have three children. In his spare time, he enjoys music, fishing, and other outdoor recreational sports. Ian’s first goal is to regionalize Sweetwater Hospital Association because he believes patients should not have to travel to receive quality care. Ian is dedicated to recruiting highly skilled physicians and providing more state-of-the-art equipment for Monroe and surrounding counties to keep up with the demand in our community. Within the first 21 weeks of Ian’s tenure as the Chief Executive Officer of Sweetwater Hospital Association, he established a Women’s Health Clinic in Vonore, an Urgent Care Clinic in Vonore, and ordered the following new equipment: infant warmers, a digital phone system, a portable x-ray machine, a DEXA bone density scanner, and a 3-D mammography unit. Furthermore, Ian is very passionate about Sweetwater Hospital Association being involved in the community. Employees are encouraged to, and compensated for, participating in community

outreach activities. Recently, Sweetwater Hospital staff members volunteered to help vaccinate over 2,600 community members at the Sweetwater Hospital Association sponsored mass COVID-19 vaccination clinics, a Monroe County Health Department vaccination clinic for the Monroe County School System, and volunteered to give out post-run snacks to the Sweetwater Valley Knoxville Marathon runners. “As the new CEO, I want to sincerely thank you for the warm welcome to not only this hospital, but the community, as well. One of my goals as Chief Executive Officer is to make Sweetwater Hospital Association the #1 hospital in this region. Being the only hospital in Monroe County, we feel it is our obligation to be the primary destination for all patients to receive a full service and comprehensive health care delivery experience. As we continue to grow, please use our “Contact Us” form on our website to let us know about your experience at our organization and what you feel Sweetwater Hospital can do for you in the future.”

Lastly, Sweetwater Hospital Association is announcing the start of our Road to 5-Star hospital campaign. Recently, Sweetwater Hospital Association was the only freestanding hospital in East Tennessee to score 4 out of 5 stars on Medicare’s Hospital Overall and Patient Satisfaction Rating. The overall hospital rating shows how well each hospital performed, on average, compared to other hospitals in the United States. When you are able to plan ahead, this is a critical tool for patients to compare overall hospital ratings and can provide a starting point for comparing a hospital to others locally and nationwide. Ian is dedicated to having Sweetwater Hospital Association become a 5-star hospital for YOU. This campaign includes training for hospital staff, new policies, and much more! Sweetwater Hospital Association wants you to know we are here to serve you. With our highly skilled team of physicians and staff, we are dedicated to providing quality care to you and your family. June Highlights

une ushers in the good old summertime in East Tennessee and temperatures have already been heating up. The best way to stay cool is to head for the lake or take a trip into the upper levels of the mountains. The Smoky Mountains are always a popular destination for local residents as well as out-of-state travelers. Short day trips to the mountains are enjoyable and economical for the family on a budget. So just look to all that East Tennessee has to offer in the way of outdoor summer fun. We just finished celebrating Memorial Day remembering all those who gave themselves in service to our country. And this next month, we will be celebrating our nation’s independence. This year July 4th will be especially significant as our economy, our businesses and our travel and activities are opening up. It’s time to enjoy events like graduations, weddings, family picnics, live events and so much more. June marks the month in which we gather with family to celebrate Father’s Day. And although my dad has been gone now for a number of years, I still reflect back on memories of him when Father’s Day arrives. Everything Knoxville is now out Children learn from their parents and take on many of their traits. on distribution. My dad was a hard worker, and he passed that strong work ethic on to me. He spent his working career as a postal employee, moving up in the ranks until the day he retired. He was dependable, responsible, loyal, even tempered, honest, and patriotic. He was a giving person who asked for nothing in return, and he was a humble person who led a humble life. His family, especially his wife and two daughters, meant everything to him. So to all dads and to those who fill the role of dad, we wish you a very happy Father’s Day.

Did You Notice This Proposed Tax Increase?

T

By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

here’s a lot of press surrounding President Biden’s proposed personal tax increases to help pay for the American Families Plan, and it’s important to know which ones apply to you and your family. At the moment, these proposals are just that - and not final. Here are two potential tax increases that get a lot of press but probably won’t affect you: Individuals with taxable income over $523,600 and couples over $628,300 would revert to a 39.6% top tax bracket from the current 37%. Households with over $1 million in i come would see the base tax rate on capital gains and qualified dividends increase from 20% to 39.6%. This type of income would continue to be subject to the 3.8% net investment income tax. But there is a third proposed change based on assets rather than income that I find the most compelling to watch and which will, arguably, affect more people: The elimination of the step-up in basis for inherited non-retirement assets. Currently, if you buy a share of stock and sell it for a profit, you pay capital gains tax on the profit. Or if you never sold it and passed the stock to your heirs, the entire embedded gain goes away - your heir escapes taxation. But under this new proposal, death is treated like a sale, and your heirs

Our Customers Say It Best.

would have to recognize the capital gain you never did. This would apply to non-retirement investment accounts, vacation homes, rental property, family businesses, farms, etc. This rule has a $1 million exemption, so that helps lessen the impact for many households. Keep your eye on the expiration of the current personal tax rates, which are already legislated to expire in 2025. Taxes will never be cheaper than they are right now, and multi-year systematic Roth conversion strategies should be an integral part of your tax planning between now and then. Needless to say, proactive tax planning will continue to be imperative under these constantly shifting sands of the tax code! Join me June 15th on Zoom to learn more. Marsh Wealth Management, LLC

I

nspired window dressings are like art for your windows. Window treatments can add an entirely new and exciting dimension to every room in your home. They also offer other features and benefits that your home’s wall art can’t provide. Well thought out, carefully planned and installed window dressings control the amount of natural light entering your home, provide desired levels of privacy, influence your home’s energy savings, protect interiors from harmful UV rays, and frame the breathtaking views from inside your home of all that Mother Nature has to offer outdoors. Creating beautiful window dressings for homeowners like you was the inspiration behind Express Blinds which I launched in 2013. In Tellico Village, and the other surrounding lake and golf front communities on and near Tellico Lake, Express Blinds has earned a reputation for the design, creation and professional installation of inspired shutters, shades, blinds and draperies for so many of the area’s custom and semi-custom homes. Our dedication and commitment to each of our clients has made Express Blinds the preferred referral partner for many of Tellico area’s premier home builders and realtors. Many of you are probably also familiar with Express Blinds which has been featured in the Home Builders Association Parade of Homes for the last 8 years. What has made our experience so personally rewarding has been the unique opportunity we have had to work with each of our clients in a truly collaborative effort. That’s one reason we select dedicated design consultants who reside in the communities we serve. In the Tellico area, Cheryl Pfund, who lives in Tellico Village and is active in her community, uses her decades of experience in custom window treatment design to transform each and every room in your home with our inspired window treatments. From stunning lakeside residences to charming villas on one of Tellico area’s many professional golf courses, the team at Express Blinds works closely with you to create art for your home’s winCheryl Pfund dows that will result in that exquisite design and showcase look that you have been dreaming of. Your experience with Express Blinds, Shutters, Shades & Drapes begins with your personal in-home consultation where our goal is to learn about your specific needs, personal tastes, design style preferences, and budget. Heritage Family Dentistry

“They Changed My Life”

The Clear Alternative to Braces

“I

’ve had bad teeth all my life, starting in elementary school,” said Earl Coley, retired Air Force veteran and U.S. Postal employee. “I was on the field watching a Boston Red Sox spring training when I absentmindedly walked behind home plate and was hit in the mouth by a bat. I can’t recommend that for anyone. Anyway, I had many problems during my teen years. I never smiled much and perfected the ‘hands over the mouth laugh.’ I visited many dentists throughout the years but never had much success. I was told I had ‘soft’ teeth – if that is a real thing. Despite having a lot of dental work done while I was in the Air Force, I still put my hands over my mouth when smiling and laughing. “I was referred to Heritage Family Dentistry and Dr. Bradshaw by my son, who swore they were the best and very friendly. I was wearing a broken partial and had several gaps due to another broken partial, which was unwearable. I had two chipped teeth and other problems as well. “Dr. Bradshaw and his team examined me and explained that I needed a full mouth rehab with crowns and bridges. I agreed. I was nervous at first from my previous experiences, but Dr. Bradshaw and his team made me comfortable. I never felt any pain, and they made me feel like part of their family and not a patient. I actually looked forward to my visits. They were very professional in every sense of the word. They are the nicest and friendliest people you will ever meet. Each and every person there demonstrates genuine care and concern for you as a patient and friend. “Today I have the most beautiful smile you will ever see. Family and friends comment on how I’m always smiling nowadays. Eating is a joy now and not painful as before. I recommend Heritage Family Dentistry to everyone – young, old, or very old like me – who needs dental work. Dr. Bradshaw and his wonderful team really changed my life for the better.” Heritage Family Dentistry 11121 Kingston Pike, Suite C Farragut, TN 37934 865-816-9211 www.hfdsmiles.com

“Open for business ….”

Photos from the Navigating Loss Retreat which was the first group to use our newly renovated facilities.

hepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church at Chota Center in Tellico Village is officially “open for business”! Over the past few months, through the Covid lockdown, we have been reinventing ourselves for our congregation as well as for the community in which we reside. Previous news articles have chronicled the work that has been done – new office space for our pastor and office manager, an enlarged social hall and kitchen – all handicap accessible. Now, as activities and buildings in the village are beginning to open back up to pre-Covid levels so, too, is Shepherd of the Lake. Join us for Sunday services with Holy Communion at 9:00 am! As of this writing we are still requesting that reservations be made in advance either online through our newly redesigned website (shepherdofthelaketn.org) or by phoning the church office at 865-816-4756. By continuing to maintain social distancing we hope that everyone will feel comfortable in our space for worship. We all look forward to the day in the not-too-distant future when that will no longer be necessary. With our renovation work complete,

Shepherd of the Lake is also now open for outside groups who wish to meet in our newly designed space. We already have several women’s groups who have made Shepherd of the Lake their “home”. And we recently hosted certified grief specialist, Donna Marie Todd, for a day long women’s retreat on navigating loss. It is our hope that this is just the start of an active church sharing what they have with the Tellico Village community as a whole. Perhaps you belong to a community group who is looking for a place to meet on a regular basis. Social service agencies, educational groups, civic organizations, mutual ministries as well as special interest groups may find Shepherd of the Lake’s newly expanded social hall a convenient location for your regular gatherings. Feel free to stop by and see for yourself how Shepherd of the Lake can fill your needs. As a congregation we feel truly blessed to be able to further fulfill our mission statement of “Sharing God’s Love With The World”! Shepherd of the Lake 865-816-4756 www.shepherdofthelaketn.org

St. Joseph The Worker Catholic Church Celebrates A Special Year By Helping New Mothers In Monroe County

W

hen Pope Francis declared that 2021 would be dedicated to St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Madisonville wanted to do something to celebrate. Parish members decided to have a giant baby shower to provide new-born items to The Good Shepherd Center which will make the items available to any mother in the community who needs help with clothing and caring for her new-born baby. “We put out a large, portable play pen and church members filled it with everything from blankets to booties to bottles,” said Margaret Cummings, President of Good Shepherd Center and a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church. “What better way to honor the earthly father of baby Jesus than to provide these items to other babies who are born into the neediest families in our county.” “Our church members are very generous,” said Fr. Julius Abuh, Pastor of St. Joseph the Worker. “They have

a special place in their hearts for babies and children. Since I came here, some members of our church do occasionally support our diocesan orphanage in my home country of Nigeria as well.” “Our parish is one of the core churches that gives regularly to maintain the Good Shepherd Center,” Abuh concluded. “We are called by Christ to feed the hungry and clothe the needy and our partnership with Good Shepherd fulfills that beautifully.” Good Shepherd Center provides free food and clothing to people, families and children in need in Monroe County, as well as providing a host of services such as help with heating bills, vouchers for doctor visits and food kits for children when they are not in school. Anyone interested in volunteering at Good Shepherd Center or contributing to its mission can call the office in Madisonville, Monday through Thursday at (423) 420-8888.

W

hile it is always a goal to not shamelessly self promote our salon, please humor me as we recognize a very special group of Teammates. The Twenty Year Club here at The Village Salon is something we are very proud of, and is deserving of this recognition. Twenty years of service at the same salon is Brian K. Whitehead Managing Partner nearly unheard of, and we are beyond proud to The Village Salon welcome our fifth and sixth members this year. Our Teammates in The Twenty Year Club are: Diana Mason, Andrea Williams, Sandy Dougherty, Kay Doyle, Amy Nichols, and Tammy Kelly. Please allow me to publicly thank each of these members of the Twenty Year Club for a job well done and for the 134 combined years of commitment to The Village Salon. While we are at it, please allow me the opportunity to thank our entire staff of sixteen Teammates for all their efforts to cultivate an environment that is capable of producing six members of our Twenty Year Club. The thought just occurred to me that perhaps we should have a Twenty Year Club for our Guests. That list is likely going to be considerably longer, and we will begin work on that project immediately. Wishing you all the best on your own salon visits, and stay well.

Need a Custom Closet?

14A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, June, 2021

A

5 Questions to Ask Yourself

re you always sorting through the never-ending amount of garments you have hanging in your closet just to put together the single outfit you had in mind? Can’t find the pants to match the shirt? Or the shoes to match the pants? While life can be messy and disorganized, a closet should not. Closets should make life easier. A custom closet that’s designed and organized based on your needs provides much more organization and maximizes storage space, which means less frustration. Tailored Living of Knoxville professionals will meet with you in your home, listen to your specific needs, and work with you to design a space that fits your everyday lifestyle. Here are some preliminary questions to ask yourself before calling for your inhome consultation: How much space do I have to work with? This is the primary aspect to factor into your closet planning. Knowing how much space you have will help the professional Tailored Living designer determine the best organizational system for your closet. Also consider ceiling height when you take inventory of the closet space. Making use of every inch can be important if you’re working with a small space. What is my budget? While the cost really depends on the size of your closet, a basic system with hanging and shelves will cost less than including cabinets and drawers. Additionally, the finish color you choose will impact your budget. A white finish will always be less expensive than wood grains and darker finishes. What types of clothing am I storing? Some people only want to hang shirts, blouses, and pants in their closet and leave other items such as undergarments stored in a bedroom dresser. Think about what types of clothing and accessories you want to store inside your closet and it will help you put together a picture of your organizational needs. Which accessories and organizers do I need? Convenient accessories like jewelry drawers, fold-out ironing boards, tilt-out hampers, drawer organizers, and pullout belt racks are among the many options that bring more order to the closet and help you easily find items. What do you want to display for convenience? From ladies’ scarves to men’s ties, for multiple items of the same type of clothing there are closet organizers and designs that provide convenience and style. These are just a few ideas to keep in mind when thinking about your custom closet design. Once you have considered your budget, what you need to store, and the space you have, Tailored Living of Knoxville will design a custom closet system with features built around you and your lifestyle!

Follow us on Facebook @pattersonshomeappliances! This past year has changed the lives of everyone in so many different ways. During such a difficult time, we have done our best to help many families find new kitchen and laundry appliances for their home. To meet customer expectations, we made sure to keep our warehouse and parts stores as stocked as we possibly could, and continue to do so as the availability of many products is still a concern. To keep our customers and employees safe, we began wearing masks and asked our customers to do the same. We also began utilizing FaceTime and video calling so that customers could shop with us right from home and could avoid trips to our stores to see the stock at that location. We also continued to connect with our customers via our website’s online chat and through social media. Throughout this pandemic, we’ve learned new ways to help our customers, and have worked toward improving each and every customer’s experience with our company. We are blessed with the amazing support of our communities who value shopping local and supporting small businesses. For that, we want to say thank you for supporting a local, family-owned business for the last 55 years, but most importantly last year with the pandemic going on and continuing into this year. We wouldn’t be here without your continued support. Thank you from our entire team to you and your family. WATeR is Sampling Tellico Lake

2B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, June, 2021

Contributors: Garry Lucas, Christine Stevens and Marilyn Morete

T

he Watershed Association of the Tellico Reservoir (WATeR) was formed to protect and preserve the environment in the Tellico watershed. As a part of this mission, one of the committees of WATeR, the Water Quality Improvement Committee (WQIC) has undertaken several long-term studies to look at the clarity of the Tellico Reservoir due to concerns about the possible increase in “greening” of the lake. “Greening,” resulting from growth of algae, is affected by runoff from agricultural and residential nutrient pollution. These concerns have arisen from the increase in new homes in the area around the watershed, resulting in the greater use of fertilizers that run off into the reservoir. Individuals who have lived around Tellico Lake for nearly thirty years have noticed a change in the color of the water from blue to grey/green. It’s difficult to see change on a short-term basis. Therefore, WATeR’s WQIC has decided to conduct a long-term study of the Lake’s water to see if negative trends can be found and then to find appropriate solutions to reverse them. What affects changes in lake water color? After intense rain storms, the area around the mouth of in-flowing streams turns brown for a few days because of soil runoff. Change in color from blue to grey/green is an indication of higher levels of algae. Algae are a diverse group of aquatic organisms that have the ability to conduct photosynthesis. How does what I do on land affect what happens in the water? Nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen encourage the growth of plants and grass on land and, when rain water (stormwater runoff) washes them into the lake, their presence there encourages the growth of algae and other unwanted vegetation. In 2018 the WQIC began a program to monitor the clarity of the water in the Tellico Reservoir. The clarity of water depends upon materials dissolved or suspended in the water, such as sediment, tannins from bark or plant tissue, and phytoplankton, which are microscopic plants that grow in the water. Clarity is an indicator of the overall health of the lake. Water clarity can be measured fairly easily and gives an indication of the present quality of the water in the Tellico Reservoir. It can also be used to track changes over time. A device called a Secchi Disc is lowered into the water to test clarity. The lower the disc remains visible from the surface the greater the clarity of the water. In 2020, clarity was measured at the Toqua Boat Ramp, Ft Loudon State Park, Tellico Village Yacht Club’s guest dock and Morganton Boat Ramp on Baker Creek. The Secchi depth averages for these sites were: Toqua Boat Ramp 73 inches, Ft Loudon (at Kayak launch Pier) 75 inches, Tellico Village Yacht Club 64 inches, and Morganton Boat Ramp 37 inches. Observation: Toqua and Ft Loudon waters were reasonably clear; Morganton was less clear. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) collects information on water quality of the Tellico Reservoir at Mile 1 and Mile 15 using the Secchi Disc every other year. The volunteers with the WQIC measure Secchi depth at more locations and more frequently than TVA allowing it to observe changing trends as early as possible. In addition to water clarity, WATeR is studying the Lake’s biological growth status. Science terminology refers to this as the “Trophic State” of water. All lakes naturally “age” over time and generally water quality decreases. Nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus together with factors such as temperature and light affect the abundance of algae or biological growth. Bodies of water are classified according to their biological productivity or growth. Low productivity waters are “oligotrophic” and generally are very clear, whereas waters with high biological growth are “eutrophic” and can be turbid and green in color. “Mesotrophic” waters are in between. Water with very high productivity are referred to as “hyper-eutrophic.” In these waters, green scum can form from dense algal blooms and the water can be unsightly, smell bad and sometimes be toxic to humans and fish. WQIC collected data for trophic determination at three sites in the main stem of the reservoir; mid-lake at the Tellico Village Yacht Club, and up-lake sites on the Little Tennessee River and Tellico River arms. Data was also collected in three of the reservoir embayments: Bat Creek, Baker Creek and Fork Creek. Embayments are shallow coves where small streams enter the lake. Tellico Reservoir as a whole would be defined as being mesotrophic. The three embayments would be defined as borderline between mesotrophic and slightly eutrophic. These results indicate that the shallow areas feeding into the Tellico Reservoir have more growth or sediment present and need to be followed to determine their influence on the water quality of the reservoir as a whole. For more information on these two studies, the complete technical reports concerning the water quality of Tellico Reservoir can be found on WATeR’s www.website tellicowater.org. The two reports are: Tellico Reservoir Water Clarity Monitoring Program: 2018-2020 and The Trophic State of Tellico Reservoir in 2020. WATeR is a 501-c-3 not-for-profit, all-volunteer organization. Contact us at Tellicowater@aol.com. Become a member and sustain WATeR’s effort to protect and improve the quality of water in the Tellico Reservoir and Watershed.

remiere Consignment is a great place to save up to 90% off the original prices of top brand-name furniture, home décor items, art, and Oriental rugs, but did you know that it is also a great way to repurpose household items that you may no longer need? Whether the result of a recent move, downsizing, remodeling, redecorating, updating, or new empty nesters, many of us have accumulated items that we may no longer need that can easily be turned into cash by consigning them for resale at Premiere Consignment. Conveniently located in Tellico Village, Premiere Consignment is your premier choice for reselling furnishings, home décor and art items, and Oriental rugs that you may no longer use. “Tellico Village is an ideal location for Premiere Consignment,” said Aaron Hunt, owner. “We receive most of our consigned merchandise from Tellico Village and the surrounding upscale lake and golf front communities, including Rarity Bay; therefore, we are able to offer our customers a great selection of quality, brand-name items at incredible savings.”

What is equally as important is the opportunity that Premiere Consignment offers its consignors. “We offer consignors three unique opportunities to resell their consigned items,” said Aaron. “By combining our instore showroom, high-profile eBay presence, and on-site estate sales, our clients have the best of all worlds representing the greatest opportunity to resell their consigned items. Our retail store offers customers the same opportunity to browse

through our current selection of furniture, home décor items, art, and rugs that conventional furniture showrooms display but at a significant savings. Also, our eBay store opens up additional opportunities for success. Our on-site estate sales are growing in popularity as well, designed especially for homeowners who might find it inconvenient to transport their numerous sale items to our retail showroom.” Three stores in one, Premiere Consignment offers both buyers and sellers a totally unique opportunity to sell preowned items and for buyers to purchase these same items at a considerable savings. ven though I developed an eye for design at a very young age, it wasn’t until later that my true creative talents evolved into a passion for the design of window treatments. Window treatment design requires an intuitive sense of what will and what won’t work for your windows. It is these challenges that have served as my inspiration for over the last 17 years. By remaining in my own lane and focusing only on Custom Window Treatments, I have developed a quick eye for the design piece as well as the technical aspect of every window. As owner of Blinds & More E. TN, I have discovered that the foundation to success for me as a designer is listening. It is the discovery of the homeowners’ unique wants and needs that serve as the beginning of the design process. By achieving your objectives and creating totally unique and custom treatments for your windows, together we will be a huge success. I always remember that I am a guest in your home and that our success is a collaborative effort. By combining your needs with my nearly 2 decades of design expertise, we can create window treatments I am confident you will fall in love with.

At Blinds & More E. TN we offer Motorized/ Non-Motorized shades, drapes, shutters and blinds for residential or commercial applications. When all your pantry items, countertop appliances, and dishware are easy to spot and easy to reach, you can save tons of time in your day. A few minutes saved when emptying your dishwasher or making a sandwich might not feel like much, but that time really adds up. What would you do with an extra 20-30 minutes each day? ShelfGenie Solutions can help you get organized. Glide Out shelves can increase your storage space by 50 percent and pull out the full depth of your cabinets and pantry. That means you can reduce the clutter in your home and make locating and retrieving

items much easier. This will also make your space feel more open, so you’ll feel as if you’re cooking in a whole new kitchen. Along with getting more space and time, being organized can help you to feel happier each day. In fact, clutter can increase stress levels and can even lead to lowered productivity. That means being organized and decluttering your space can help you to work better, enjoy your space more, and feel more relaxed at home. The Monroe County Animal Shelter and the Monroe County Friends of Animals are here for YOU…the Residents of Monroe County ***URGENT***

Calling Kitten Fosters: “Kitten Season” is here! The kittens and the shelter need you NOW! As a foster home, you can choose to foster kittens that need to be bottle fed, or a nursing Mom cat and her babies, or somewhat older weaned kittens (socialized/unsocialized) that just need to grow up/gain enough weight so they can be spayed/neutered and be ready to be adopted. Some kittens are just un-socialized and have not had any or only minimal human contact. They just need some TLC so they can be adopted. There is nothing better than cuddling a kitten and watching

it as you help it become a happy pet…. And the best reason for being a cat/kitten foster is that even if it’s pouring rain, you don’t have to walk them! Please call the shelter for additional information. We

also always need dog and puppy fosters all year long! “Flea, Heartworm and Tick Season” is here! Oh, wait….it NEVER stops in TN! Did you know that fleas are not only annoying but they can also be dangerous to your pet? Fleas are more than just insects that bite and suck your pet’s blood. Yes, fleas can also transmit parasites to your pet including various worms! They are preventable! The most common and annoying disease caused by fleas is flea allergy dermatitis. Some dogs and cats are allergic to the flea saliva and just one bite will cause them to be miserable. Dogs and cats with flea allergies will scratch resulting in hair loss and skin lesions, even from just one flea. The best way to prevent all of these conditions is to prevent the fleas! There are many safe and effective preventative medications available from a veterinarian, for just this purpose. Many of the supermarket/discount store/over-the-counter “preventives” are not safe and can be very dangerous. It is best to purchase from your vet. Some products also include a heartworm preventive. These preventative medications should be used every month in Tennessee and not just in the summer months! Cats can be particularly sensitive to some chemicals. NEVER use any flea product on your cat without the consent of your veterinarian. Some flea collars can cause local irritation around the neck

of the pet. This chemical irritation can be worse than the fleabites themselves. We cannot stress enough how important heartworm preventive is for ALL dogs and cats…Heartworms KILL our pets and it IS preventable. Heartworm disease in cats is very different from heartworm disease in dogs. The cat is an atypical host for heartworms, and most worms in cats do not survive to the adult stage. Cats with adult heartworms typically have just one to three worms, and many cats affected by heartworms have no adult worms. While this means heartworm disease often goes undiagnosed in cats, even immature worms cause real damage. June In the Garden

M

other Nature is taking her own sweet time warming up this year and has slammed us with some chilly nights that have caused some problems in your yards. This is what you need to do: ✻ Do frequent walk-arounds. Plants are stressed and more vulnerable to disease and insects. If you catch problems in the beginning, you have a better chance of getting them under control. Keep in mind, however, that the best treatment for most cold issues is time. Yes, your leaves got frozen. Yes, things are taking longer to get going because the soil is still too cold. There is nothing you can do about those things, so avert your eyes and give the plants time to heal. ✻ I mentioned insects, but please remember that you do not need to spray every single thing that crawls on your plants! Be sure that the bug is doing damage before you spray it. One customer wanted to kill the ladybugs on her tomato until I explained that one ladybug can clean all the aphids off a tomato plant in a single day. There are some good bugs! ✻ The cool, wet weather is a good breeding ground for fungus, so watch for it and begin treating at the first sign. Neem is a good starting point chemical, but some plants may require something stronger. ✻ You can prune the winter damage from shrubs now if you haven’t already. You can also cut back spent bulbs, the stalks of spring bloomers (iris, peonies, etc.) and annuals that are getting leggy. If you want to reduce the size of your spring blooming trees and shrubs, prune soon after they stop blooming so they have not set bud yet. ✻ Maintain your container plants. Most will need to be deadheaded, cut back, cleaned up (don’t let the spent blooms settle down into the container), and fertilized weekly.

Get Your Yard Ready for

SUMMER

✻ How are your vegetables? Many are off to a slow start because the soil has not warmed up enough. Be vigilant in watching for trouble in the form of insects and disease and treat before it gets out of hand. Splashing water is a quick way to spread disease, so always use soaker hoses or water at the base of the plant. Mulch will help. Call us if you have problems. ✻ Finally, don’t panic if you haven’t planted yet. There is still time! Now let’s talk about perennials, because June is perennial month! There are some things that you need to know if you are not used to growing perennials. First of all, many perennials do not have a long bloom time. The average is 4-6 weeks. This means that if you want consistent blooms, you’ll need to plant sequential bloomers. Start out your spring with creeping phlox, candy tuft, irises, peonies, brunnera, and baptisia. Add summer bloomers such as daisies, lilies, phlox, purple coneflower, yarrow, bee balm, rudbeckia, and salvia. If your yard is shady, hostas, coral bells, and ferns will give you blooms and wonderful foliage color combinations. As we move into the fall, asters, mums, sedums,

and some of the sages will continue the bloom show. Winter has hellebores to bloom in the gloom. Additional information about perennials: ✻ It takes them a while to get going. The third year is when most really start performing. ✻ If you have worked good compost or soil conditioner into your soil, most do not need fertilizing. ✻ After 3-5 years, you can divide and share. Research timing or give us a call, because some prefer spring division and some prefer fall. ✻ Most can be moved if they (or you) are unhappy with their location. Butterfly weed has a taproot and cannot be moved. ✻ Perennial does not mean forever. Some, like peonies, can live for decades. Others tend to start fading after a few years. ✻ There are a few that are toxic. If you have pets that like to nibble on your plants, please do some research!

I’m going to end by letting you know what is going on in the plant world. In short, it is absolute chaos. Annual and perennial supplies are dwindling, as are veggies. Tropical plants are done for the year. Trees and shrubs will be low in stock for the next few years, as they are a 3-5 year growing investment, and growers simply cannot keep up with demand. In addition, there are not enough trucks and drivers to move the plants. There is also a shortage of many bagged goods and chemicals. There isn’t a darn thing we can do about it, so I would appreciate it if you didn’t come in fussing at us as we are having a hard time too - thank you! That’s all for this month. Let’s all hope for a peaceful summer! Meadow View Greenhouses & Garden Center 9885 Highway 11E Lenoir City, TN 37772 865-986-7229 www.meadowviewgreenhouse.com

Garage Renovation: Starting from the Floor Up

M

ost of us grew up with a totally utilitarian garage with a coated floor – coated with oil and dirt. But today’s garages have become an extension of a home’s living space, and that means creating a clean space with flooring that’s extremely durable and easy to clean. For a striking and long-lasting garage floor coating that is easy to maintain, Knoxville’s PremierGarage can transform an oil-stained, pitted, or peeling epoxy-coated garage floor into a showroom quality look. PremierGarage of Knoxville, locally owned and operated, combines its proprietary hybrid polymer flooring system technology with their extensive industry knowledge and experience to provide a high-quality finish that is chemical, stain, and slip resistant. The two-day process starts with experienced technicians who diamond grind each floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond that substantially outlives traditional epoxies. Curing two times harder than epoxy, the flooring provides a continuous, non-porous coating surface that naturally resists various liquids that may leak from your automobile’s engine. It’s like armor for your concrete floor. Any clean up requires only a hose or mop.

Available in hundreds of various chip and color combinations, you can customize your garage flooring to fit your home and style. The garage will be as aesthetically pleasing as the rest of the home. PremierGarage’s flooring solutions are also suitable for commercial and light industrial applications. Having a PremierGarage floor installed will also: Increase the resale value of your home. Improves safety with a floor that is slip, impact and heat resistant, and brightens the area with increased light reflectivity Open up new activities in your garage. It could double as a children’s play area or hobby space. “With our high-performance flooring system and experienced technicians, we guarantee our flooring while also providing great customer service,” said Brian Falls, co-owner of PremierGarage of Knoxville. “We are a local company that’s been dedicated to serving the Knoxville area for almost 15 years and we’ll be here for many years to come.” Call PremierGarage of Knoxville and discover the affordability of transforming your garage floor. e all love our pets. They’re our companions and much loved members of our families. But on occasion our love affair with our pets can become strained, particularly if they have an accident inside our homes, and especially if it involves one of our most prized possessions, a favorite Oriental or area rug. If you discover the accident soon after it happens, all the better. But if the accident goes undetected, other problems can result. Oftentimes homeowners discover an accident only after Fido’s urine has penetrated their Oriental rug. Once the rug and pad, if any, have been compromised you will likely find that your home’s hardwood floor has been severely damaged. And the cost to repair your hardwood floor will likely surprise you. I’ve been in the Oriental rug and carpet cleaning business since 1985 and have had a front row seat to amazing innovations that have literally transformed our industry. One such innovation are our proprietary Oriental and area rug carpet pads that effectively block the penetration of pet urine, protecting your hardwood floors. These Eco Premium Pet Urine Barriers are Green Label Certified Envioromentally Safe. They are manufactured from 100% recycled materials, they are odor free, do not off-gas, are washable, non-toxic, non-allergenic, will not stain, discolor or mar your flooring. And they include a Life of the Rug Warranty. So my floor is safe, but what about my pet urine stained rug? Removing pet urine stains and odors can be tricky, but fortunately technology has come to the rescue here as well. Thanks to the significant investments we have made in the latest Oriental rug washing technology, our Farragut-based Oriental and area rug washing boutique can now safely remove or minimize most pet urine stains and odors, thereby reducing the possibility that you may have to discard your stained rugs. To learn more about our rug pads featuring our special Pet Urine Barrier and our proprietary 11 – step Oriental and area rug washing service, call me today. Why not let Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning help you to discover a whole new level of clean? Your Oriental Rug washing specialists since 1985.

Prevent a Family Boat Dock Tragedy

recent article in BoatUS describes how two young friends, boys ages 10 and 11, drowned in Cherokee Lake. Sadly they died from Electric Shock Drowning or ESD. ESD occurs when low levels of A/C current enter the water from faulty electrical wiring on family docks and boats. This current incapacitates a swimmer, Consumers’ Choice Award winner for Excellence causing them to drown. It also poses a significant health risk to those attempting to 12 years & counting! rescue these individuals. he 2021 boating season is now fully underway and so is a new season of endless boat detailing, unless of course you own a Touchless Boat Cover System from Lifetime Docks, LLC. Like other area boaters, we frequently see boats in docks, both private and some community docks that are protected by the Touchless Boat Cover System. The concept is a simple one...create a garage for your boat that protects your watercraft like your home’s garage protects your vehicles. So we installed a new Touchless Boat Cover System last summer, redirecting a portion of the money we saved from a canceled 2020 Mediterranean cruise. Well the proof as they say is in the pudding. When we opened up our boat for the beginning of the 2021 boating season, we were pleasantly surprised. And although we had considered using our old boat cover as added protection, we avoided the temptation. We simply pressed our Touckless key fob and our boat, which was detailed last summer, appeared, looking showroom new. No bird droppings and no spiders. We lowered our boat lift, turned on the battery, started the blower and after the required interval, started our engine. We were off for an enjoyable day on the lake. S

ummer has arrived! Most of America is cleaning out their closets, welcoming the pool and lake days, and spending more time in their backyard relaxing with friends and family. On hot, humid summer days, the most satisfying thing I can think of is an ice-cold glass of water! But often in our homes, the water can taste or smell, especially in East Tennessee. Some common complaints I often hear are a metallic taste or a rotten egg smell. No one wants to be drinking bad water on a hot, summer day! We at Aqua Clear Water Systems can provide you with that pure, tasty water you crave after mowing the lawn or being outside with your kids. What’s the solution, you ask? A Whole-Home Water Filtration System! Not only will it increase your home’s value, but it will also give you the water you’ve been dreaming of. In the last year, we’ve spent more time at home than ever before, which means you’ve been drinking your home’s water in copious amounts. So, we’d like to give you 5 reasons why a Kinetico Water System is the key to your summer water woes. 1. Improved Water Quality, Taste & Odor. East Tennessee’s water is known for its hardness, as well as chlorine, iron, sediment, and other harmful contaminants polluting the water. A whole house Kinetico water filtration system can remove all of these contaminants to give you tasteless, odorless, and silky feeling soft water throughout your home. 2. Improved Life of Appliances & Fixtures. A system will protect your home from damages caused by a variety of water contaminants! You could be extending the life of your water heater, washing machine, dishwasher, pipes, refrigerator, and more by installing a Kinetico water system, because reducing the build-up in these appliances al-

lows them to work efficiently. 3. Increased Value of Your Home. With the housing market booming, we’d love to help you get a bigger bang for your buck when selling. An article titled 10 Upgrades That Increase Home Values by Forbes stated “this amenity will pay off now and in the future when it’s time to sell.” 4. Improved Health. Chlorine is a harmful chemical used to treat bacteria in water. While it’s necessary to kill bacteria, chlorine can’t differentiate between good and bad bacteria. When you shower in chlorinated tap water, your skin absorbs

The 17-Year Cicadas Can Damage Your Trees Young Trees, Especially Fruit Trees, Most Susceptible

B

y now you’ve heard the cicadas are coming. In fact, they are practically here. Entomologists predict the periodical cicada that are on a 17-year reproduction cycle will start emerging from the soil in mass within the next several days, and some early emergence has been documented in parts of Tennessee. What you may not have heard is that those young fruit trees you planted this year, or maybe in the last few years, are in danger if you have a large cicada population in your area. After all the noisy mating, the female periodical cicada will select woody shoots on trees and cut slits in the bark in which she will lay her eggs. The cicada prefers woody growth from the previous year that has relatively thin, smooth and soft bark and which is about the same diameter as a pencil. “Even a single female cicada may cause a lot of injury,” says David Lockwood, a University of Tennessee Extension specialist who works with fruit and nut tree growers. “However, the high cicada populations that are expected to appear can magnify damage expectations immensely.” Lockwood says injury from cicadas on mature trees, vines or bushes may result in death or breakage of shoot tips, which, while not pleasing to look at, may cause relatively little actual damage. However, the potential impact on young plants is much greater. “Entire branches that would grow into permanent scaffold limbs for fruit and bear a large portion of future crops may be severely injured by the damage to their bark, thus affecting their productive potential throughout the tree’s life. Preventing damage from occurring on young trees is much preferred over coping with damage after it has occurred.” Frank Hale, UT Extension entomologist, adds that some insecticides can be used to protect plants, but physical exclusion of cicadas is more effective. “Covering the canopy of young plants with netting having a mesh size of a quarter inch or less and tying it around the trunk under the lowest limbs will provide a physical barrier to cicada egg laying,” he recommends. Note that the gauge for most bird netting is too large to prevent cicadas from entering the netting. Hale recommends mosquito netting, nylon tulle fabric or light-weight spun fabric such as tobacco shade cloth or floating row covers.

the chlorine like a sponge, leaving your health at risk. To name a few, high amounts of chlorine can cause breathing and lung problems, as well as cancer from THMs agents. Filtering your water could save you from unnecessary illnesses. 5. Improved Skin & Hair. A whole house filtration system reduces the amount of build-up on your appliances, as well as your skin and hair. Who wouldn’t want that? Softened water results in brighter skin, shinier hair, and longer-lasting clothes. Now that you know the benefits of installing a whole-home filtration system, we’d love the opportunity to help you

The coverings can be safely removed when the male cicadas have stopped their loud calling and all the cicadas have died off — about six weeks after they emerge. But wait! Netting alone is not enough to prevent damage to young trees. Lockwood says that unless a frame is used to suspend the netting so that it does not touch the plant canopy, some young limbs may be damaged where the net lies directly on small branches. “These areas should be pruned off once nets are removed as this could cause problems for the trees as they grow,” he says. “These branches should be removed during fall and winter dormant pruning and new shoots encouraged to grow and take their place. Even if just the terminal portion of a new scaffold limb is damaged, removing the entire branch and encouraging the growth of a new replacement shoot is preferable to heading a branch back to just below the damaged area as this could cause problems in developing a good scaffold limb.” Lockwood adds that owners should remove and destroy damaged tips from branches within four to six weeks following egg laying. This will prevent nymphs hatched from eggs on the infested tree from entering the soil and feeding on tree roots. Both experts say that over time the slits made by the egg-laying cicadas can serve as openings to a number of diseases and pests that can damage the tree or fruit. Secondary issues that may develop include woolly apple aphids on apple trees and lesser peach tree borers on stone fruit trees. Mixed Media Paintings & Sculpture by Bradley Wilson in Current Exhibit at the Arts Center in Athens, TN Free Play is on exhibition in The Arts Center’s Willson Exhibit Room & Hall Gallery now through June 30, 2021

F

ree Play is an exhibit of pieces by Bradley Wilson. Bradley Wilson was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1970. He received degrees in painting from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (BFA, 1994) and the University of Mississippi (MFA, 1997). His paintings, drawings, and sculptures are in many private and corporate collections across the United States and Canada. He has exhibited in galleries and museums regionally and nationally. In addition to making artwork, Wilson teaches studio art and art history at Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee, and conducts regular painting workshops at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina, as well as other venues. Bradley resides with his wife, twelve dogs, and three cats in Charleston, Tennessee. Wilson explained the inspiration behind the current collection on exhibit at Athens Area Council for the Arts Center: “About fifteen years ago I became interested in the idea of painting as an improvised performance. I had grown dissatisfied with making work that was fully conceived at the beginning, worked out through studies and sketches, and then executed onto canvas. Something important was missing. I began to make paintings with no formulated plan. I let the images emerge slowly or quickly out of the painting process itself. I began playing with color, line, texture, and shape. I embraced uncertainty as an essential element of creation. My painting process is fluid and organic. I constantly make changes throughout the creation of a piece. I have no philosophy of painting other than to be open and responsive to the possibilities of the moment. Connecting with the present and finding the potential, this is what my work is about.” For more information on this exhibit and all AACA programs visit athensartscouncil.org, call 423-745-8781, or stop by The Arts Center at 320 North White Street, Athens, TN.
