It’s been our pleasure, in partnership with BC Hydro, to bring the very best in electrification technologies to Vancouver for three consecutive years, but 2025 has felt different. The warmth of the welcome remains unchanged, but everything else seems a little less certain. The switch away from fossil fuels to electrification was never going to be a simple case of linear uptake – there’s too much financially at stake for the vested interests that profit from pollution – and as we’ve seen in Britain, the technological space we inhabit has become an ideological battleground. For these reasons, it’s more important than ever, that Canadians show up, elbows up, to Everything Electric VANCOUVER, to demonstrate your demand for the cleaner future for energy and transport that beautiful British Columbia deserves!
But while this year’s exhibition offers as much inspiration as ever, there are a few factors that have made it much harder to convene Canadian cleantech. The end of the CleanBC Go Electric rebate a few months ago has already hurt battery EV sales in the province, and has given carmakers cause for pause. It’s our hope that the rebate is reinstated in the near future as newer technologies often need a little nudge, and it’s not as if fossil fuels are subsidy free. Worse still is the tariff uncertainty that has blighted business north and south of the border, and is damaging demand for tech companies that rely on supply chain certainty, institutional investment and consumer confidence. What’s more the imminent end of the EV tax credits, is denting established and emerging American automotive manufacturers alike. Ally this to the mood shift, brought about by Trump’s antipathy to all electrification technologies and things feel very different from 12 months ago. Increasing calls for Canada to break free from the ties that bind it to the US, and invite other carmakers in, are 100% understandable.
And so Canada finds itself at a crossroads, how it handles the next 12 months will have a huge impact on ‘everything electric’. Having recently visited Norway, the world’s leading cleantech
consumers, and China, the world’s leading cleantech creators, we remain as confident as ever, that these cheaper, better technologies will prevail in the long-term, and that this global megatrend will ‘trump’ all political obstacles, but what will Canada’s role be in that generational transition? With the type of leadership, we have witnessed – as displayed by BC Hydro and others – we believe that Canada can – with British Columbia leading the charge – transform this great nation into a cleantech powerhouse. And without being too bold, we can confirm that some of the very best electric vehicles on the planet are now being built beyond North America.
