FROM OUR GROUP SUSTAINABILITY MANAGER PEGGY LEE

As Everyone Active’s Group Sustainability Manager, I’m pleased to support our partners during the current energy crisis and update on our work towards net zero and energy management objectives.

We recognise that managing our energy usage and addressing the climate emergency is a key priority for the leisure sector, and for all our local authority partners.

Everyone Active’s Net Zero Strategy has three key streams:

1. Our Support Hub (head office) achieves carbon net zero

2. Our company fleet of vehicles is exclusively electric by the end of 2026 and our corporate operations net zero by end of 2030

3. All the centres we operate achieve net zero in line with each local council’s net zero target date

Our net zero strategic partner

To support our work towards achieving our aims, we have recently agreed a partnership with Leisure Energy as our net zero strategic partner. This will further enable Everyone Active to provide even stronger support to our local authority partners in achieving energy reduction in the short term and decarbonisation in the longer term, as well as capturing funding opportunities.

Leisure Energy is the sector-leading energy saving and renewable technology consultancy, as well as a principal contractor, with a track record in delivering significant savings and securing external funding such as the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) for leisure facilities.

Our support on the Swimming Pool Support Fund

In the past month, Sport England released further details on the £60million funding criteria for supporting leisure facilities with swimming pools.

As an operator, we are on hand to support our partners and work together to access any available funding.

We are ready to provide support on these funding applications by providing relevant data, information and technical expertise.

The Government fund is managed by Sport England, to support public leisure facilities with swimming pools. There are two phases of the fund and both phases are competitive:

• Phase I (£20 million revenue grant, application opened on 30th Jun, closes at noon on 11th August)

• Phase II (£40 million capital fund from the Government and £20 million of Lottery funding with a focus on energy efficiency)

Official information will be released on Sport England’s web page. Everyone Active will collate the required information and provide other required support for our local authority partners, for timely submission of the application in both phases.

NEW OPENINGS AND TECHNOLOGY ON DISPLAY

Stevenage Golf & Conference Centre welcomed the local community to experience its brand-new TrackMan Range recently, with a free family open morning.

Upwards of 6,500 golf balls were hit throughout the day by various demographics, with many being new customers, including a large influx of juniors using the range for the first time.

Professional golfer Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston made a guest appearance, meeting and greeting fans and hosting a ladies-only session where he shared his top tips for success.

In partnership with Stevenage Borough Council, we welcomed the Mayor, Councillor Myla Arceno, and

Portfolio Holder for Culture, Leisure and Information Technology, Councillor Loraine Rossati, who officially launched the new TrackMan Range with a ribbon cutting.

The TrackMan Range is a state-of-the-art golf training system. Using advanced technology, the system provides detailed feedback, helping keen golfers to improve their game while offering everyone the chance to explore new ways to play. Equipped with interactive games, it’s also child friendly, helping to engage children with the sport.

An array of free activities were on offer at the open morning, including free use of the TrackMan/driving range, pitch and putt and par-three course.

LOOKING AHEAD

Throughout the year, we host a series of events for our Sporting Champions to take advantage of, including mentoring and awards evenings. These events are designed to support athletes whose profiles are growing and offer first-class support and advice from professionals across the industry.

SPORTING CHAMPIONS AWARDS

For the first time since 2019, we’re very excited to host our awards ceremony which recognises the sporting excellence of our athletes over the past 12 months on Tuesday, November 7 at Porchester Hall, London.

The categories include Sporting Champion of the Year for all regions and Young Athlete of the Year. Winners will include those who have had career successes or who have engaged with the Sporting Champions scheme and their local Everyone Active centre. We will also celebrate those who have helped to inspire other up-and coming sportsmen and women. HEALTH & WELLBEING IN FOCUS

THE NEPTUNE CENTRE

LAUNCHES ‘ACTIVE WELLBEING SUITE’ TO TACKLE LOCAL HEALTH INEQUALITIES

We’re proud to have launched the UK’s first Active Wellbeing Suite. The new studio will help improve health inequalities in Middlesborough by supporting active ageing and local residents with long-term conditions.

Developed in partnership with Innerva, the Neptune Centre utilises the company’s powerassisted exercise equipment to empower individuals to improve their fitness and strength in a supportive and social environment. At Neptune Centre, a converted room houses the Active Wellbeing Suite, which comprises a circuit of 10 machines, each targeting a specific muscle group.

“We are extremely proud to launch this Active Wellbeing site, it is great news for physical

activity in Middlesbrough. The installation of Innerva equipment at the Neptune Centre will help us to further support the local community to live healthier and happier lives. Our aim is to help people of all ages, including those with long-term health conditions to be active,” said Rebecca Phillips, Everyone Active’s Strategic Lead – Health and Wellbeing.

As one of the 20 per cent most deprived districts in England, Everyone Active is working with its local health partners in the area to establish regular use of the suite with key user groups.

Pauline Cofinas, Everyone Active’s Contract Health & Wellbeing Manager – Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland, has secured funding to refer patients who are waiting for planned care such as knee and hip replacements into the Active Wellbeing Suite, and is working with the Public Health England Specialist Activity Team to set up regular bookings for those with Parkinson’s, MS, Neurodivergence and long term conditions.

The new facility is designed for people with reduced mobility and those who are affected by long-term health conditions. It caters for a wide range of needs and conditions, including mobility limitations, obesity, high blood pressure, back pain and joint problems.

FOCUS - OUR CURRENT PROJECTS

OUR NEW PARTNERSHIP WITH GOOD BOOST

The launch of MSK Hubs in 30 Leisure centres will support people to manage their pain and condition. The programme includes innovative Good Boost technology and Escape-PAIN courses, usually delivered by physio services. Patients can refer themselves or be referred by our healthcare partners.

Joint, bones and muscle pain, otherwise known as MSK conditions, is the primary cause of disability in UK and globally with an average of 5.3-7.9 years lived in disability. MSK conditions result in a 4x increased risk of poor mental health. MSK Hubs funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) include partners, Good Boost, UK active, Escape Pain and Arthritis Action.

Good boost classes can be delivered in water or on land. Over 58% of people see an improvement in levels of pain after using Good Boost and 100%

of people see increased mobility after completing an Escape-PAIN course. This is one way in which leisure can integrate with health and social care to support patients with prevention and treatment of their condition.

Sessions are also based in pools, along with peer support in our community cafes.

NEW INCLUSIVE FITNESS CLASSES LAUNCHED ACROSS LOCAL

LEISURE FACILITIES

Local leisure centres in Dacorum have introduced five new and inclusive fitness classes.

In partnership with Dacorum Borough Council, our centres have added the classes to deliver additional support for people with long term health conditions.

Focused on supporting those living with Parkinson’s, dementia, learning difficulties, and many more conditions, the sessions will be offered across Berkhamsted Leisure Centre and Hemel Hempstead Leisure Centre.

The new classes include LTA Open Court Walking Tennis, Good Boost, Gentle Exercise to Music, Love to Move and Strength and Balance sessions – all working to improve mobility and strength whilst offering social benefits.

Walking Tennis sessions allow people to try sport at a slower pace whilst Good Boost classes support those with joint conditions and a wide range of long-term health conditions, and can be in the form of either fitness or swimming sessions.

Love to Move is an inclusive gymnastics programme which can be done seated and is transforming the lives of people living with dementia. Launched by British Gymnastics it is the first of its kind in the UK.

Steve Cox, area contract manager, said:

“The sessions are designed to support a wide range of people within the community that may struggle to be involved in physical activity and ultimately improve their health and wellbeing through regular movement.”
