A WORD FROM OUR GROUP SUSTAINABILITY MANAGER

It’s been a busy year from a sustainability perspective, as we continue to play our part and support our partners on the topic of utility cost pressure, helping to meet the longer-term net zero ambitions for both parties.

In addition, it’s been brilliant to see the level of engagement in the sustainability campaigns, helping drive awareness to energy and carbon savings at our sites and the Support Hub. As part of the bigger picture, we are also working towards our Net Zero Strategy in these three workstreams:

Our Support Hub to achieve carbon net zero

Our company fleet of vehicles is exclusively electric by the end of 2026 and our corporate operations net zero by end of 2030

In addition, Sport England released further details on the Phase II capital funding (a total of £60 million) to support leisure facilities with public swimming pools to become more energy efficient.

Along with the above, we are also across the upcoming Salix Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) Phase 3c funding, with work already underway with targeted sites and our local authority partners.

As we continue to work hard together to capture the above opportunities, I want to thank all the teams for the efforts in pulling everything together and communicating with our partners. Keep up the great work!

Kind regards,

Peggy

MEET THE INSPIRATIONAL FAIZA AWAN

Faiza Awan, a 27-year-old from Slough, is breaking barriers as a deaf personal trainer at Langley Leisure Centre.

Born deaf, Faiza faced challenges and societal misconceptions about her abilities throughout her life, which impacted her confidence and opportunities. She, like many deaf young people, experienced barriers while pursuing her education, making the journey to gain her GCSEs stressful and difficult.

In 2017, Faiza’s perspective on health and fitness transformed when she joined a gym in her previous workplace to embark on a journey of self-improvement and weight loss.

Having experienced the benefits of regular exercise, including improved mental wellbeing and increased confidence, Faiza realised that she could help others achieve similar positive changes in their lives.

“I was bored in my previous job. I was working in an office and it wasn’t for me. I wanted to pursue a career that aligned with my passion for fitness, and I wanted to help others.
“I wasn’t sure how to get started but I was determined that being deaf wouldn’t stop me. I sought support from Slough Borough Council, my previous employer, to help connect me to Everyone Active and was eligible to receive the support of a BSL interpreter.”

LAMMAS LEISURE CENTRE TEAM TAKE ON THE PEAKS CHALLENGE

Our team from Lammas Leisure Centre will be tackling the National Three Peaks, combined with the Yorkshire Three Peaks, in an extreme 48-hour challenge for charity.

The team is raising vital funds for Dementia UK during the event, as part of Everyone Active’s commitment to the charity this year.

General Manager Tommy Fairweather, Sales Manager Thomas Spalding and Fitness Manager Lee Moss will be taking on the six peaks which covers the three highest UK mainland peaks, and the three highest peaks in Yorkshire, over September 5-6.

Tommy, who has previously completed the six peaks as a leisurely family outing over four days, said: “We want to push ourselves. We’re doing this for charity, so it needs to really test us.”

The team will start at dawn, at 4.30am, at the base of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), which they will be aiming to summit and descend within three hours. They will then drive to Yorkshire and hopefully complete the 28-mile Yorkshire Three Peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, before the end of the day.

Then the real challenge begins as they attempt to recover for the following day, getting as much rest and food in overnight before driving to the base of Scafell Pike, ready for a 7am start. They hope to complete this peak within four hours. It’s then back into the car for the seven-hour drive to Ben Nevis, which they are aiming to finish at around 11pm.

The team has so far raised 10 per cent of their £2,000 fundraising target, with sponsorship just getting under way. Donations can be made at:
