Everyman Theatre Brochure September 23 - June 24

everymantheatre.org.uk Sep 2023 - June 2024

Welcome, once again, to our new season brochure and our spectacular line-up of entertainment at the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham. As this brochure lands the theatre is excited to host the premiere of The Full Monty which we are co-producing, for the first time, with Buxton Opera House. Following the two-week run in Cheltenham, the show and it’s spectacular cast will be embarking on an extensive national tour. This has been an exciting achievement for the theatre and we look forward to the production’s continued success.

The theatre is also proud to announce that our recent fundraising event, Saturday Night’s Variety Night, was hugely successful and, with the help of our loyal audiences and event sponsors, we managed to raise over £15,000 which will go toward creating a safe and nurturing environment for the children of the Kambia District of Sierra Leone. We hope that you will be as generous with your support when our new season pantomime Mother Goose, which will feature Tweedy’s first appearance as a pantomime dame, supports two local charities. Home Start and Allsorts, based in Stroud, are dedicated to providing everyday fun and support to young children and their families who are experiencing challenging circumstances or require additional support.

Our new season will once again present a stellar line-up full of variety. In March we are pleased  to be producing more of our own work when Tweedy returns to star in William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which is also slated to tour to venues across the country. Additionally, we are excited to welcome Liza Goddard and Paul Bradley in Michael Frayn’s hilarious comedy Noises Off; the chilling thriller Murder in the Dark, starring Tom Chambers and Susie Blake and the spectacular family musical Shrek. In May we are also delighted to play host to the world premiere of Birmingham Royal Ballet’s newest production by their famed director and choreographer Carlos Acosta.

As you scan the pages ahead, we hope you’ll find many shows to your liking, and we look forward to welcoming you in the days and months ahead. As always, we wish you the best and we’ll see you at the theatre.

Sincerely,

@EverymanChelt /EverymanCheltenham @EverymanTheatreCheltenham @EverymanChelt

Following a recording-breaking West End season, this powerful production of TWELVE ANGRY MEN is back in session!

Reginald Rose’s gripping courtroom thriller stars Patrick Duffy (Dallas, Man From Atlantis), Gray O’Brien (Coronation Street, Peak Practice), Tristan Gemmill (Coronation Street, Casualty), Michael Greco (EastEnders), Ben Nealon (Soldier Soldier) and Gary Webster (Minder, Family Affairs), with further casting to be announced.

Twelve Angry Men has been hailed ‘the classiest, most intelligent drama playing on the West End’. It brings the 1957 three-time Academy Award nominated film, considered one of the great ‘mustsees’ of all time, to the stage.

A jury has murder on their minds and a life in their hands as they decide the fate of a young delinquent accused of killing his father. But what appears to be an open and shut case soon becomes a huge dilemma, as prejudices and preconceived ideas about the accused, the trial, and each other turn the tables every which way, until the nail-biting climax…

Now it’s your turn to witness a ‘BRILLIANT’, ‘RIVETING’, ‘TRIUMPH’ of a show.

It’s Christmas Eve and miserly Ebenezer Scrooge is paid an unexpected visit by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley, who announces the arrival of three spirits…

This is the beginning of Charles Dickens’s iconic story of greed, selfishness and ultimate redemption; a story that is as much a part of Christmas as figgy pudding, the baubles on the tree and… well, Christmas carols. Dickens’s book is given a brand new adaptation by the Everyman Theatre’s Creative Director Paul Milton, and promises to be an accessible, moving and fast-paced production, suitable for all the family. From Tudor Queens to Pop Princesses, the six wives of Henry VIII take to the mic to tell their tales, remixing five hundred years of historical heartbreak into an 80-minute celebration of 21st century girl power. These Queens may have green sleeves but their lipstick is rebellious red.

Think you know the rhyme, think again...

Noises Off

DIRECT FROM THE WEST END

One of the greatest British comedies ever written comes to the Everyman Theatre direct from a triumphant West End season.

Michael Frayn’s celebrated play serves up a riotous double bill, a play within a play. Hurtling along at breakneck speed, Noises Off follows the on and offstage antics of a touring theatre company as they stumble their way through the fictional farce, Nothing On. From the shambolic final rehearsals before opening night in Westonsuper-Mare, to a disastrous matinee in Ashtonunder-Lyne seen entirely, and hilariously silently, from backstage, we share their final, brilliantly catastrophic performance in Stockton-on-Tees.

A stellar cast will be led by Liza Goddard and Paul Bradley. Liza Goddard’s extensive stage comedy credits include Life of Riley, Communicating Doors, Season’s Greetings, Relatively Speaking and the Everyman Theatre Company’s own production of A Passionate Woman Paul Bradley is best known for playing Nigel Bates in EastEnders and Elliot Hope in Holby City

Don’t miss the award-winning comedy that created the template for every play that ever went wrong!

No opera can match the tragedy and sorrow of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.

Set in Japan at the turn of the last century, it is the story of a doomed love affair between an American naval officer and his young Japanese bride whose self-sacrifice and defiance of her family leads to tragedy. This touching tale of innocent love crushed between two utterly different cultures resonates as strongly as ever in today’s world.

Dom Joly: The Conspiracy Tour Ross Noble: Jibber Jabber Jamboree

Jibber Jabber Jamboree marks Ross Noble’s 21st solo stand-up tour and he’s coming to the Everyman to celebrate this milestone. Ross is inviting you to join him for an evening of the sort of inspired nonsense that has cemented his place as the supreme master of stream of conscious freewheeling stand up.

This is a chance to see Noble live on stage in his natural habitat.

What’s it about? What will we learn? How will it change the world? Are all pointless questions to ask when Noble is off on one of his tangents. Grab a ticket and come and enjoy the ride.

Warning: Show may contain strong language and themes of an adult nature.

“Just because you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean you’re not being followed!”

Dom Joly has been off travelling the globe again. This time, he’s been looking into some of the strangest and weirdest conspiracy theories in existence. Now, he’s now set to embark on a rather unique theatre tour, where Dom will be providing a hilarious, fascinating, and slightly anarchic guide to the wacky world of conspiracies.

In the spirt of fairness, Dom will also be inviting a well-known and highly respected conspiracy theorist, Dr Julian Northcote, to take the stage and defend the alternate view.

Due to the extremely controversial views aired in the show, security will be at an optimum and audiences are warned that angry demonstrations are very likely – or is that just another conspiracy?!

Sir Tim Rice: My Life in Musicals Julian Clary: A Fistful of Clary

You’ve heard of The Man With No Name? Well, here’s The Man With No Shame. Julian Clary, renowned homosexual and national trinket, is fixing to saddle up and head on out for his 2024 UK tour.

“Yes, it has a Western theme,” the old buckaroo confirms, sipping Bourbon from a pint tankard. “It was only a matter of time before I eased myself into some chaps” he adds, dabbing his temples with a damp flannel.

Julian is sure that the men in the audience will be so eager to join his posse they won’t be able to keep their hands off his Rawhide. The lucky few will play with him on stage in the Hang ‘em Low saloon, where Wild Bill Hickok used to meet his special friend, Raving Clarence la Fruit. But life in the Old West was tough. Not all of Julian’s wild bunch will be around to witness the final shoot-out that will result in Julian giving himself selflessly at high noon to the last man standing. Who knows what else he’ll do for a few dollars more?

He Does What?!

Philip Douch reads stories for grown-ups. He chats for a bit, and then he reads you his stories. Disarmingly simple. Probably unlike anything you’ve seen before. Full of laughs and sometimes gently moving. Warm, witty and fun.

Last seen at The Everyman as Eddie The Eagle’s Dad in Fly Eddie Fly, Philip has read at The Green Man festival and at the Cheltenham Literature Festival (oh, and at a Pirates Party…).

‘A huge high…. I haven’t laughed so much for ages.’

‘Thank you for bringing joy into my evening.’

‘The evening was a triumph. Really really fun and the audience loved it!’

Andy Irvine is one of the great Irish singers, his voice is one of a handful of truly great ones that gets to the very soul of Ireland. He has been hailed as “a tradition in himself.”

Musician, singer and songwriter, Andy has maintained his highly individual performing skills throughout his over 50-year career. From Sweeney’s Men in the mid 60s, to the enormous success of Planxty in the 70s, his duo with Paul Brady in the later 70s and then from Patrick Street to Mozaik, LAPD and Usher’s Island, Andy has been a world music pioneer and an icon for traditional music and musicians.

As a soloist, Andy fills the role of the archetypal troubadour with a show and a travelling lifestyle that reflect his lifelong influence, Woody Guthrie.

What’s Wrong With Benny Hill?

Benny Hill died alone in his spartan flat in 1992, he was 68. His body was undiscovered for several days. He was, and still is, one of the most successful comedians of all time.

Today The Benny Hill Show is broadcast regularly in over a hundred countries around the world. In Britain he has, effectively been ‘cancelled’. What’s Wrong with Benny Hill? is a brand-new comedy that explores the life and legacy of a very peculiar and brilliant comedian. It tells the story of his life and shows why he was considered by many of his peers to be the best.

Why has he been airbrushed from British Comedy History? Mark Carey, in his latest play sets out to address this question and to show how funny this unique and deeply private man was.

The Blackheart Orchestra are multi-award winning, multiinstrumentalists Chrissy Mostyn and Rick Plkington.

From their onstage ‘musical space station’ they create highly emotional modern rock music featuring a multitude of sounds and atmospheres from acoustic and electric guitars, bass and bowed guitar to piano, organ, vintage synthesisers, omnichord, melodica and electric percussion.

They have been described as a modern day Pink Floyd with influences from as far afield as Kate Bush, Portishead and Cocteau Twins to modern composers Steve Reich and Philip Glass.

Stories In The Dust

Two travellers journey across the barren and dusty world that is their home. They make up songs and tell stories, inspired by the treasures they’ve collected from a time gone by.

One day they happen upon something extra special, a lucky find that promises to breathe life back into the empty land that surrounds them - is it a chance for change or will their hopes be dashed once again?

With live music, puppetry and clowning, Stories In The Dust is a funny, heartfelt, post-apocalyptic family show that takes you to another world. Join two intrepid explorers who are full of stories and full of hope but dangerously low on baked beans. Originally created with a seed fund from MAST Mayflower Studios and with support from Wiltshire Creative and Pound Arts.

Suitable for ages 5+

The Man Who Left The Titanic

On April 15th 1912, the Titanic, the greatest ship in the world, slipped below the frigid waters of the Atlantic, yet J. Bruce Ismay, managing director of the White Star Line, stepped into a lifeboat and sailed away from the stricken ship.

The Man Who Left The Titanic evokes that terrible voyage and asks whether Bruce Ismay only did what any of us might have done in the same circumstances, or should his actions that night consign his name to infamy? Was he a coward, or merely human?

Strange Tales From The Darker Side

Dr Nicolas Grimoire takes you on a trip to the Darker Side for a unique performance of strange and Gothic magic combining psychological illusion, mind manipulation and spooky storytelling.

With your help the doctor uncovers some unsettling stories from the past, illustrated by arcane objects of all kinds. Hear the terrifying story of Gloucestershire’s most unusual murder, discover the secrets held by ancient photographs and help summon up the spirits of those who are long dead.

If you enjoy the mind-reading mysteries of TV’s Derren Brown then this spine-chilling blend of magic and traditional storytelling is the perfect evening’s entertainment for you.

Award winning comedian and BBC R4 Comedy Club host, Lou Conran brings her new show to your ears and discusses the absolutely imperatively important topics such as: What is a bunion? Where is Bobby Davro? And why does fame bring so much joy and pain in equal measure, and why oh why is the world of TV so fickle?

With silly stories, a bit of game show nonsense and her usual fruity fair, Lou Conran shows why she is a firm favourite with audiences around the country, and why live comedy is far better than sitting in front of your telly-box.

As seen on Sky Comedy, CBBC, CH4, ITV & BBC. Co-host of Spit or Swallow Podcast, and host of How’s Your Week Been? Podcast.

David Eagle is a comedian, musician, and a member of three-time BBC Radio 2 folk award-winning band The Young ‘Uns.

In 2018 David branched out into stand-up comedy and was crowned New Comedian Of The Year at Nottingham Comedy Festival, Bath Comedy Festival and Leicester Square Theatre. Recently he featured on BBC Radio 4/s flagship comedy The Now Show. David is blind, and his comedy often explores how his disability means the most ordinary, commonplace events are turned into surreal and convoluted dramas. Occasionally he dons his accordion (often as a spiteful repost to hecklers) and performs one of his comedy songs, such as his George Formby parody, described by the Guardian as “a comic tour de force.”

Music In The Irving Studio Theatre

Presented By Buzz Buzz Buzz

The Carrivick Sisters Slow Leaves

Slow Leaves is the self-contained solo project of Canadian singer songwriter Grant Davidson.

He curates almost every aspect of the music and its presentation, including being multi-instrumentalist, producer, cover art designer, photographer, and video director. His folk and psych-rock stylings recall older songwriters like Mickey Newbury, Nick Drake, Gene Clark, and Neil Young. But they also live in the world of modern classic writers like Andy Shauf, Bonny ‘Prince’ Billy, Bedouine, and Bill Callahan. His voice has been compared to Roy Orbison and Bryan Ferry. This is a rare chance to see him playing in the UK touring his latest album Meantime.

Johnny’s effortless vocals have graced the folk-scene since the emergence of Decameron in the early 1970s.

An experienced solo performer, he is a talented songwriter and a fine interpretative singer. Johnny has recorded over fourteen albums including The Winding Stair, Borderland, Edge of Day with writer Laurie Lee, his latest album River of Dreams, and he has just celebrated the 40th Anniversary of the release of Forest & Vale & High Blue Hill – his first album of Gloucestershire songs. Johnny has performed at many festivals, and venues large and small and is making a most welcome return to our intimate Irving Studio.

Nick

2024 sees Nick Harper jettison his normally aspirated time machine which clocks in at just 60 minutes per hour, for a model that can appear anywhere at any time in the many portals of Harperspace.

In a new, uniquely styled, acoustically driven album and tour, Nick explores the past, present and future in his own singular way. The new project follows up recent successful sojourns back in time to explore swinging 60s London (58 Fordwych Rd); 19th century Fantasy literature and 1980s West Country romance (Phantastes) and an epic poem lost in time (A Wiltshire Tale). Will this be the one album to unite them all? Only time will tell...

The Carrivick Sisters are one of the UK’s top young bluegrass and folk acts.

Twins Laura and Charlotte perform their original songs and instrumentals along with a few carefully chosen covers on guitar, mandolin, fiddle, dobro, and clawhammer banjo. Their busy touring schedule is rapidly building them a reputation for engaging and entertaining live performances with tight sibling vocal harmonies and multiinstrumental virtuosity. Having grown up in South Devon, an area rich in folk lore and legends, much of their original material is inspired by their local surroundings and history.
