everymantheatre.org.uk May 2023 - February 2024

Hello again and welcome to your first look at our new season at the Everyman Theatre, the first for all of us under the reign of a new monarch. We were delighted to celebrate our new King with a series of special community plays in our Irving Studio Theatre written, directed and performed by some of Gloucestershire’s finest talents. We hope you were able to join us for the performances and were as thrilled as we were with their efforts.

The upcoming season at the Everyman Theatre, as cliched as it may sound, truly presents something for everyone. As the end of the school term approaches, we’ve got a whole host of family entertainment in our Sizzling Summer of Fun. Performances include beloved television characters from In The Night Garden, family circus mayhem with the Splash Test Dummies, bubble artists, magic shows and a brand new musical featuring Winnie the Pooh and all his friends from the 100 Acre Wood.

We are also pleased to be able to give you a first look at the cast for our production of The Full Monty, which will open here at the Everyman Theatre, before embarking on an extensive national tour. The exciting new cast is led by Danny Hatchard (EastEnders, Ridley Road) and Jake Quickenden (Footloose, X Factor, Dancing On Ice). Don’t miss your chance to see this spectacular show before anyone else.

We are very aware of the pressures everyone is facing these days and we appreciate that you choose to spend your valuable time and resources with us here at the theatre. To help you make the best use of your resources we will continue to offer special discounts whenever possible. In our upcoming season we are pleased to offer 2 for 1 opening night tickets for productions as diverse and exciting as The Official Take That Musical Greatest Days and Agatha Christie’s best-selling Crime Thriller of all time, And Then There Were None, as well as special preview performances of The Full Monty with tickets as low as £22.

Finally, we would like to ask for your help with a very important project we are supporting. Over the past five years members of the theatre’s EveryVoice Choir have been busily building schools and other facilities for villagers in Sierra Leone. To support their work we will be hosting a gala evening of entertainment this July, to raise money for a nursery for the children of the Masama Village and provide much needed early years education. We hope you can join us for this very special evening and look forward to seeing you at the theatre.

Sincerely,

@EverymanChelt /EverymanCheltenham @EverymanTheatreCheltenham @EverymanChelt

THE TIMES

Titanic - The Musical

In the final hours of 14th April 1912, the RMS Titanic, on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, collided with an iceberg and ‘the unsinkable ship’ slowly sank. It was one of the most tragic disasters of the 20th Century. 1517 men, women and children lost their lives. Based on real people aboard the most legendary ship in the world, Titanic The Musical is a stunning and stirring production focusing on the hopes, dreams and aspirations of her passengers who each boarded with stories and personal ambitions of their own.

With music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Peter Stone (Woman of the Year and 1776), the pair have collectively won an Academy Award, an Emmy Award, an Olivier Award and three Tony awards.

The original Broadway production of Titanic The Musical won five Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book. This stunning production celebrates the 10th anniversary of its London premiere where it won sweeping critical acclaim across the board.

GARY BARLOW AND TIM FIRTH’S THE MUSICAL

Calendar Girls the Musical

Inspired by the story of the Calendar Girls.

Following the death of a much-loved husband, a group of ordinary women in a small Yorkshire Women’s Institute are prompted to do an extraordinary thing and set about creating a nude calendar to raise money for charity.

But upturning preconceptions is a dangerous business and none of the women are prepared for the emotional and personal ramifications they will face as the fabulous and funny calendar brings each woman unexpectedly into flower.

The story of the Calendar Girls launched a global phenomenon: a million copycat calendars, a record-breaking movie, stage play and now a musical written by Tim Firth and Gary Barlow which coined the term “craughing” - the act of crying and laughing at the same time!

With unforgettable songs, every performance continues to add to the millions already raised for charity and prove that there is no such thing as an ordinary woman.

Twelve Angry Men

Following a recording-breaking West End season, this powerful production of TWELVE ANGRY MEN is back in session!

Reginald Rose’s gripping courtroom thriller has been hailed as ‘the classiest, most intelligent drama playing on the West End’. It brings the 1957 threetime Academy Award nominated film, considered one of the great ‘must-sees’ of all time, to the stage.

A jury has murder on their minds and a life in their hands as they decide the fate of a young delinquent accused of killing his father. But what appears to be an open and shut case soon becomes a huge dilemma, as prejudices and preconceived ideas about the accused, the trial, and each other turn the tables every which way, until the nail-biting climax…

Now it’s your turn to witness a ‘BRILLIANT’, ‘RIVETING’, ‘TRIUMPH’ of a show.

The Ugly Duckling A Christmas Carol A Christmas Carol The Ugly Duckling

It’s Christmas Eve and miserly Ebenezer Scrooge is paid an unexpected visit by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley, who announces the arrival of three spirits…

This is the beginning of Charles Dickens’s iconic story of greed, selfishness and ultimate redemption; a story that is as much a part of Christmas as figgy pudding, the baubles on the tree and… well, Christmas carols. Dickens’s book is given a brand new adaptation by the Everyman Theatre’s Creative Director Paul Milton, and promises to be an accessible, moving and fast-paced production, suitable for all the family. A show that will get you into the Christmas spirit, while asking you to think about its messages along the way.

Steve Ashley is one of British folk’s finest singer-songwriters. His songs have been covered by Fairport Convention, Ralph McTell & Wizz Jones, Show of Hands, Martin Simpson and many others.

We’ll Let You Know

After a lengthy period out of the business, veteran actor Bobby Roberts has been invited to an audition.

Auditions can be tricky at the best of times and this is made no easier when Bobby is plunged into the brave new world of immersive and participative theatre. Will he sink or will he swim?

Find out as Dreamshed Theatre presents ‘We’ll let you Know’ - a humorous look at the actor’s lot.

Cecil Beaton’s Diaries

For the first time ever, the diaries of photographer and stylist Sir Cecil Beaton are dramatised for the stage, to accompany his most iconic and lesser-seen photographs and designs.

Beaton’s photographs showed his versatility; his diaries exposed the cost. Even his triumphant designs for My Fair Lady never stopped his doubts. And his passion for Greta Garbo found fulfilment only in his writing.

Blisteringly funny and at times deeply moving, with appearances ranging from the Queen Mother and Elizabeth Taylor to Churchill and Capote, the diaries paint a self-portrait of the 20th century’s most compelling dandy.

The diaries are adapted and performed by Richard Stirling, whose recent credits as an actor include appearances in Bridgerton and The Man who Fell to Earth.

Sense and Sensibility A Boy Called Anne

“I wish, as well as everybody else, to be perfectly happy; but, like everybody else, it must be in my own way.”

Unfairly compelled to leave their family home and left almost destitute by their brother and his spiteful wife, the Dashwood sisters and their mother must make a new beginning. Despite their very different personalities, both the prudent, sensible Elinor and the impulsive, open-hearted Marianne suffer great sorrows in their affairs of the heart yet they finally find contentment and peace in their new lives.

With dazzling wit, humour and sharp characterisations, Austen’s captivating story is brought to vivid life by Hotbuckle, in this new version by Adrian Preater.

He Does What?!

Philip Douch reads stories for grown-ups. He chats for a bit, and then he reads you his stories. Disarmingly simple. Probably unlike anything you’ve seen before. Full of laughs and sometimes gently moving. Warm, witty and fun.

Last seen at The Everyman as Eddie The Eagle’s Dad in Fly Eddie Fly, Philip has read at The Green Man festival and at the Cheltenham Literature Festival (oh, and at a Pirates Party…).

‘A huge high…. I haven’t laughed so much for ages.’

‘Thank you for bringing joy into my evening.’

‘The evening was a triumph. Really really fun and the audience loved it!’

Andy Irvine is one of the great Irish singers, his voice is one of a handful of truly great ones that gets to the very soul of Ireland. He has been hailed as “a tradition in himself.”

Musician, singer and songwriter, Andy has maintained his highly individual performing skills throughout his over 50-year career. From Sweeney’s Men in the mid 60s, to the enormous success of Planxty in the 70s, his duo with Paul Brady in the later 70s and then from Patrick Street to Mozaik, LAPD and Usher’s Island, Andy has been a world music pioneer and an icon for traditional music and musicians.
