The Tribal acknowledgement of The Evergreen State College is a living document that will be reviewed annually and may be updated as language and other factors change.

The Squaxin Island Tribe’s habitation of the land on and around the inlets of the Southern Salish Sea, including what is now the City of Olympia and the Olympia campus of The Evergreen State College spans thousands of years. The ancestral families who lived and thrived here: They named Budd Inlet Steh-Chass, and they named Eld Inlet where the campus is located Squi’Aitle.

Get to Know Campus Tours (Meet at Clock Tower) Find out more about what makes Evergreen special with a guided tour. Choose one of the following:

F Forest research tour: Take a walk through the woods to learn more about ongoing research in

our forests. Be prepared for shorter/longer walk depending on weather.

F Organic Farm: Take a 1.5-mile round-trip walk through the woods to learn more about fresh

foods and farming here. Sturdy, closed-toed shoes are required on the farm.

F Trails of the Evergreen Forest: Become more familiar with Evergreen’s extensive trail network.

You will be walking through the woods and be prepared for shorter/longer walk depending on weather.

F Science Labs tour: Explore and learn about Evergreen’s Science Labs and instrumentation!

This is a great way to learn about the science curriculum as well!

F Media Resource: Creatives, this one's for you. Join us for a tour of our labs —Podcast Studio,

Lynda Lighting Lab, and Photoland -- plus find out how Media Loan can get you equipped with

audio-visual equipment for your classwork.

F Art Studios tour: Explore and learn about Evergreen’s wide assortment of art studios, including

fine metals, printmaking, wood, and more!

F Costantino Recreation Center: Come get a walkthrough tour of everything the CRC has to offer!

The Existential Toolkit for Climate Work (Comm Building–Recital Hall) Sarah Jaquette Ray, PhD, professor and chair of the Environmental Studies Department at Cal Poly Humboldt for this public lecture. Distilling wisdom from across many fields and traditions, from indigenous knowledge to neuroscience, Dr. Ray will offer an "existential toolkit" for the climate generation, and anybody who worries about what the future holds.

How can we show up for each other and the planet, and not burn out or despair to the point of giving up? Join us at this required Orientation session.

Library Lounge (Evans Hall Library) Come in to prep for class with our Course Materials on Open Reserve collection, learn how to use the Summit system to borrow books from other libraries (you might be able to borrow your books for class!), or have a quiet day putting together a puzzle, playing a game, or watching a DVD from our collection in one of our reservable media/study rooms.

You in Blue: Cyanotyping with Photoland! (Meet on Red Square) We are going to make a collaborative cyanotype print and you are invited! Never heard of cyanotype? No problem! Using our bodies and some sunshine we will create a piece of artwork together that will hang in Photoland for you to visit during your time at Evergreen.

Join us to start off your Evergreen experience by leaving your mark!

BRING THIS WITH YOU FOR YOUR FACULTY–STUDENT WORKSHOPS The Five Foci of Learning at Evergreen The Five Foci are a component of the Evergreen learning experience that are designed as the pathway to successfully meet the Six Expectations of an Evergreen Graduate.These Foci are also helpful to keep in mind when crafting your evaluations and Academic Statement.

The Six Expectations on an Evergreen Graduate Evergreen has developed a set of Six Expectations that frame our approach to college education.

They should guide your academic work and be used to evaluate your ongoing learning and development throughout your education.

1. Interdisciplinary Study: Pull together ideas and concepts from many subject areas, enabling you to tackle real-world issues in all their complexity

Keep all six in mind as you write reflectively and critically about your progress in your Self-Evaluations and Academic Statement. Use the writing prompts provided with each expectation to get you started:

2. Collaborative Learning: Develop knowledge and skills through shared learning,rather than in isolation and in competition with others.

3. Learning Across Significant Differences: Recognize, respect, and bridge differences —develop critical thinking skills in a diverse world.

4. Personal Engagement: Develop your capacity to judge, speak, and act on the basis of your own reasoned beliefs.

5. Linking Theory with Practical Applications: Understand abstract theories by applying them to projects and activities and put them into practice in real-world situations.

1. Articulate and assume responsibility for your own work. What have you focused on and what have you learned? Summarize the big ideas as well as the details.

2. Participate collaboratively and responsibly in our diverse society. In what ways have you worked with others and helped to cultivate an inclusive and collaborative community?

3. Communicate creatively and effectively.

How have you demonstrated this in your academic and community work? Example can be research papers, presentations, performances, internships and artwork etc.

4. Demonstrate integrative, independent, critical thinking. How have your programs or courses deepened your knowledge and skills in critical analysis?

5. Apply qualitative, quantitative, and creative modes of inquiry appropriately to practical and theoretical problems across disciplines. How have you applied data, oral histories, case studies, and cultural work (art, media etc.) to address real world issues?

6. Demonstrate depth, breadth, and synthesis of learning. Why does this in-depth, connective learning matter - to you personally, and to our local-to-global commitment to social justice, the environment, and public service?

LEARNING AT EVERGREEN

FACULTY–STUDENT WORKSHOP CONTINUED Seminar Seminars are integral to most academic programs at Evergreen. Seminars are forums in which issues are raised and explored but not necessarily resolved; they require you to think, to practice the skills of analysis, and by doing so, possibly leave you with more and better ideas than the ones with which you came. Seminars are the intellectual heart of the college. They serve as a means for groups of students to obtain a set of common experiences, usually based on a text, piece of art, film, etc., and then go beyond the sharing of facts to probe into the depths of the subject matter at hand.

Interdisciplinary work Interdisciplinary work explores multiple areas of study and how they intersect with one another. Drawing connections across different branches of knowledge and knowledge systems helps us understand the complexity of the world and address real world issues more holistically.

"When you are working within one field, none of the large framing questions are usually disputed or in question, whereas when you keep passing back and forth across different fields, you have to keep tripping over the threshold of the assumptions in any one field. You are more likely to see the perils in them or weaknesses in them as well as strengths and see some of the larger framing questions."

Whether you know exactly what you want to do, or you’re exploring your options, we can help you find your path.

Your Path is Your Own

All your life, at every school, you've had boxes placed in front of you to be checked off. At Evergreen, your path is your own. Take charge of it in your own way to get the education you want.

Talk to someone. That might be your current or past faculty, or you can talk to an Academic or Career Advisor anytime. Share your concerns and get a broader perspective.

Take the time to reflect. Working on your Academic Statement is an excellent way to structure your reflections.

Consider an Internship or Individual Learning Contract (ILC). Once you've got a solid start at Evergreen, Internships and Individual Study can allow you to develop higher-level skills.

Find Your Path

Nobody tells you this, but for many jobs, it doesn't really matter exactly what you take in college. It matters more that you gain the skills in thinking, analysis, creativity, teamwork and communication that numerous surveys show employers are really looking for.

At Evergreen, you’re learning more than just the subject matter of your classes.

A liberal arts education gives you the tools and skills for wherever you find yourself in a year, five years or 20 years.

Start with your own interests. Explore Evergreen’s Undergraduate Studies paths, fields of study and the catalog, or Contact an Advisor to match your interests to existing programs.

Be open to trying something new. College is a great time to explore new ideas and subjects.

Talk to your faculty. They've seen your work so far and they may have ideas for where you might want to go next. If you want to master a specific subject, they likely can point you in the right direction.

Career Exploration

If you don’t know what you want to do after college, that's totally normal!

Talk to a career advisor. We can help you with ways to research which types of careers relate to your area of study, to explore options and create a strategy, then work on your own and come back when it’s right for you.

Access Services works with students to provide equal access to all campus programs and services, honoring disability as a valued part of our diverse community. Reach out to set up accommodations and get the academic support you need.

Basic Needs Advocacy & Resource Center (College Activities Building 135) Located in CAB 135, BNARC offers free, immediate essentials like shelf-stable food, hygiene items, and a gender-affirming clothing closet. Stop by whenever you need extra support meeting your day-to-day needs.

BIPOC & LGBTQ+ Intersectional Support Services (BLISS) (College Activities Building 227) BLISS creates space for you to build community, explore your identity, and access resources tailored to BIPOC and LGBTQ+ students. They are dedicated to breaking down systemic barriers and helping you thrive at Evergreen.

Student Emergency Fund (Evans Hall 1200J-Financial Aid)

If you face an unexpected financial crisis that threatens your ability to stay in school, the Emergency Fund is here to help. Eligible students can receive emergency funding to keep their education on track.

Student Wellness Services (SEM ll B-3rd Floor)

Student Wellness Services offers basic medical and mental health care to help you handle the transition to college life. Our practitioners provide direct care on campus and can connect you with specialized community resources.

Sending your student off to college is a major milestone, and the Dean of Students Office is here to support their wellbeing and success every step of the way. Our housing options offer a balance of privacy and community engagement through on-campus apartments and renovated residence halls. Meal plans are available for all students including off-campus residents with larger upfront plans offering lower per-meal costs.

Student Educational Privacy (FERPA) (registration@evergreen.edu, studentprivacy.ed.gov/ferpa) Under federal law (FERPA), student education, health, and housing records cannot be released without the student’s permission—even for students under 18. Students can complete a release form if they wish to share this information with you.

GET YOUR GEODUCKS IN A ROW: TIPS FOR NEW STUDENTS

F GET FAMILIAR ONLINE: Log-in to my.evergreen.edu. Make sure your personal information profile is correct, find your first meeting location on Schedule Evergreen, tour your program Canvas site, and send an email to your faculty via Outlook to introduce yourself.

F BE ON TIME: Especially to your first-class meeting to secure your spot. If you can’t attend, email your faculty ASAP. F MAKE A FRIEND: Everyone is nervous! Lean into the awkward get-to-know-you stage to find a classmate to talk to and discuss homework assignments and resources.

F FIGURE OUT TRANSPORTATION: DID YOU PAY FOR PARKING? Get your parking permit during your first week! Riding the bus in Olympia is free!

F EMAIL YOUR FACULTY: If you anticipate missing class this quarter for athletic games, religious observances, or other commitments, be sure to notify your faculty in writing as soon as possible.
