For the third year in a row, EvergreenHealth was named as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals by Healthgrades for consistent, year-over-year superior clinical performance across a broad spectrum of care. This distinction places EvergreenHealth among the top 2% of hospitals nationwide for superior performance.
A leading nonprofit hospital watchdog organization, The Leapfrog Group, awarded EvergreenHealth with an “A” Hospital Safety Grade based on its ability to protect patients from medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections. Welcoming New Leadership In 2019, EvergreenHealth was fortunate to welcome Jeff Tomlin, MD; Mary Shepler, RN, BSN, MA, NEABC; and Christopher Bredeson to its executive leadership team. Jeff Tomlin, MD EvergreenHealth CEO
Dr. Tomlin was named as EvergreenHealth’s CEO and has been a valued member of the organization for 30 years. He began his career at EvergreenHealth as an anesthesiologist in 1990, was later named medical director for the Evergreen Surgical Center, and joined the executive team as senior vice president and chief medical and quality officer in 2010.
Christopher Bredeson EvergreenHealth Chief Operating Officer
As chief operating officer, Chris Bredeson oversees all facets of health care services and operations for EvergreenHealth Medical Group, and strategic planning for the EvergreenHealth system. Bredeson has served in leadership positions since 1994, and before joining EvergreenHealth in December 2019, was president and COO of MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup.
Mary Shepler, RN, BSN, MA, NEA-BC EvergreenHealth Chief Nursing Officer
Mary Shepler joined as EvergreenHealth’s chief nursing officer, responsible for overseeing inpatient nursing areas, emergency services and overall nursing practice for the entire EvergreenHealth system. Before coming to EvergreenHealth, she served for nine years as vice president of patient care services/chief nursing officer for SCL Health–St. Joseph Hospital in Denver.

Excellence in Stroke Research and Care Five-Star Rated by CMS The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) awarded EvergreenHealth with a five-star rating for high scores across multiple key areas, including safety of care, patient experience, effectiveness and timeliness of care.
Local Honors and Recognition U.S. News and World Report named EvergreenHealth among the best in the Puget Sound region for the second consecutive year. Additionally, 425 Magazine again named EvergreenHealth as ‘Best Hospital & Health System’ on the Eastside for the sixth time in seven years.
Enhanced Childbirth Experience and Safety EvergreenHealth and Overlake Medical Center collaborated as two of only four hospitals in the country partnering with Ariadne Labs—a joint center of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health—on the Team Birth Project, an innovative program focused on empowering mothers and all members of the birth team to initiate communication and inspire more collaborative teamwork to achieve better outcomes for mothers and babies.
American Stroke Association’s (ASA) Get With The Guidelines® - Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award was granted to EvergreenHealth for the fifth year in a row for surpassing industry standards in stroke care by using the most up-to-date evidence-based treatment guidelines to improve outcomes for patients who suffer a stroke.
Comprehensive Weight Loss & Management Practice EvergreenHealth opened its new weight loss and bariatric surgery practice, EvergreenHealth Weight Loss & Bariatric Care, which offers treatment and services for adult patients living with a range of health and wellness needs. Each weight loss pathway is designed to meet patients where they are on their journeys to better health, and accommodates individuals with complex health needs and chronic conditions.
Expanded Access to Care Patients and families seeking vascular care in Snohomish County can now be treated at EvergreenHealth Monroe Vascular Care, a new clinic led by EvergreenHealth Vascular Care physician Dr. Amy Coulter. The expansion of vascular care in Monroe provides a convenient alternative to traveling to Kirkland, and enables EvergreenHealth Monroe to better meet the needs of patients across the Sky Valley region.

Community Benefit Spotlight Stewards of Your Levy Funds As a public hospital district, EvergreenHealth provides a special benefit to the greater community. Every year, we are entrusted as the stewards of your resources, to use tax levy funds to meet community health needs. In 2019, more than $5.4 million in levy funds supported a range of programs designed to provide quality health care, services and resources—often at no charge to the community —to meet patients’ and families’ wellness needs. The following programs offer examples of just some of the benefit EvergreenHealth is accountable to offering our community. Offering On-Call Nurse Triage Care and Services 24/7 Nurse Navigator & Healthline EvergreenHealth’s 24/7 Nurse Navigator & Healthline provides a levy-funded free resource for all community members, offering on-call nurse triage care, scheduling and referrals to primary and specialty care, and registration for health education programs and services.

Increasing Access to Quality Health Care and Social Services Community Healthcare Access Team (CHAT) EvergreenHealth’s Community Healthcare Access Team (CHAT) is a levy-funded program that is focused on reducing the barriers to accessing and navigating affordable and quality health care and social services. Through partnerships with a range of community organizations, CHAT serves residents across the region by connecting low-income, underinsured and uninsured residents to resources for insurance, financial assistance, behavioral and community health services, educational information and other forms of assistance. As part of its mission, CHAT and its team of specially trained staff members and social workers serve as a bridge between EvergreenHealth and community health and social services. They are experts in Medicare and Medicaid eligibility, and CHAT staff are certified navigators for the Washington Healthplanfinder exchange. Each year, the team helps hundreds of community members find the appropriate plan and obtain health insurance. Beyond their work within the EvergreenHealth system, CHAT partners with community agencies—such as Project Access NW, Hopelink and more—to help educate residents in accessing appropriate health care services.

Navigating the Journey of a Serious Illness EvergreenHealth Palliative Care Many providers describe EvergreenHealth’s levy-funded palliative care program as a much-needed rest stop along the journey of living with a serious medical condition. It’s a chance for patients and families to pause and work with a palliative care physician to assess a range of symptoms and make sure they are being managed as well as possible. In 2019, EvergreenHealth Palliative Care program leaders, including Cynthia Tomik, LICSW, who manages the department, and Dr. Hope Wechkin, medical director of EvergreenHealth Hospice and Palliative Care, were appointed to lend their expertise to inform decision-making and establish care standards for palliative care programs across Washington state. Their contributions to the Dr. Robert Bree Collaborative, and to the Washington State Hospice and Palliative Care Organization board of directors, are focused on creating a road map and resources based largely on EvergreenHealth’s approach, to help providers, patients and families navigate palliative care in the most compassionate and effective ways.
Supporting Compassionate End-of-Life Care EvergreenHealth Hospice Care
Serving the Community with Comprehensive Geriatric Care EvergreenHealth Geriatric Care EvergreenHealth Geriatric Care compassionately serves patients 65 years and older who have complex medical needs by partnering with them, their families, and care coordinators to reach higher function, greater independence, and enhanced quality of life. In 2019, EvergreenHealth Geriatric Care’s multidisciplinary team of specialists—including physicians, nurses, social workers and pharmacists— grew to include Dr. Reza Ghomi, who specializes in working with older adults who are more vulnerable to depression as they age. Together, the practice’s board-certified physicians and providers collaborate to offer some of the region’s most comprehensive care for seniors, evaluating each patient’s health status, including functional and cognitive ability, emotional health, and support needs. In 2019, EvergreenHealth Geriatric Care served 6,301 patients, including 5,863 existing patients and 438 new patients.
In 2019, EvergreenHealth Hospice Care continued serving families across King and Snohomish counties with the high-quality endof-life care for which the nearly 30-year-old program is well-known.

Community Benefit Spotlight Promoting Mental Health Resources for Young Adults EvergreenHealth Youth Mental Health Program EvergreenHealth is committed to empowering the community to take action in promoting awareness of the mental health challenges facing young adults. Through its levy-funded Youth Mental Health Program, EvergreenHealth partners with groups and organizations across the community to offer trainings, resources and grassroots solutions for pressing mental health issues. In 2019, the health system continued offering its wellattended youth mental health first-aid trainings, where participants learn how to identify and support teens in crisis. Levy dollars also made it possible for EvergreenHealth to provide funding for a part-time mental health counselor in the Northshore School District, and the health system was able to invest in programs facilitated by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to increase awareness of mental health and to dispel the stigma often associated with it.

Sustaining STEM Education Partnering With Local Schools With help from the community’s levy dollars, EvergreenHealth partners with local school districts to provide middle school and high school students with information and education related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). In 2019, EvergreenHealth reached hundreds of students in Lake Washington, Northshore and Riverview School Districts through a range of programs, including its sevenyear partnership with Juanita High School’s Global Health STEM program, as well as local STEM education fairs for fifththrough eighth-grade students, and through other hands-on educational opportunities. The goal of the program is to provide students insight into health care careers by offering opportunities to job shadow EvergreenHealth providers, attend the hospital’s Grand Rounds, learn from EvergreenHealth guest speakers and access resources for presenting information on important global health topics to their fellow peers.

Providing Perinatal and Postpartum Support EvergreenHealth Childbirth and Early Parenting Education EvergreenHealth Childbirth and Early Parenting Classes provide a continuum of support for new families. The spectrum of offerings start with classes for families who are pondering parenthood, continue with childbirth and pregnancy “Delivery Day” classes and move straight through the toddler years. In addition, since 1991, EvergreenHealth has served new parents and their little ones with education and resources through its Parent-Baby program. What began as a meeting for six new mothers has since grown to include 12 different groups for parents and babies from birth to 15 months, with support for parents suffering from perinatal mood disorders. All programs are designed to cater to participants from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and to foster a sense of community and camaraderie for new parents. Class facilitators collaborate closely with EvergreenHealth’s Family Maternity Center and Postpartum Care Center to ensure families receive comprehensive resources and support in every moment.
Serving Seniors Across the Region Partnering with Northshore Senior Center EvergreenHealth has long served as a partner to Northshore Senior Center (NSC), a Bothell-based nonprofit organization offering vital programs, services and resources to older adults in the community. NSC’s Enhanced Wellness program, made possible by EvergreenHealth levy funds, is an evidence-based program designed to decrease the length of participants’ hospital stays, lower their psychoactive drugs, alleviate symptoms of mood disorders and encourage older adults to maintain control of their lives through a participant-centered approach. Additionally, the levy-funded Adult Day Health Program provides occupational therapy for functionally impaired disabled adults, offering support to both seniors and their caregivers.
Among several accomplishments in 2019, Northshore Senior Center and Northshore Adult Day Health Center: Served 3,586 individuals at NSC, more than a 50% increase from 2018. Provided 2,322 one-on-one consultations for social services and health and wellness participants. Expanded its diabetes support program with support from EvergreenHealth.
In 2019, EvergreenHealth’s Childbirth and Early Parenting Education program offered 1,069 programs to 9,797 participants, resulting in 19,544 encounters with parents and families.
Offered more than 10 educational programs in partnership with Peter Kirk Community Center. Saw improvements in physical and cognitive functioning in more than 90% of individuals who received program interventions through the Adult Day Health Program, such as occupational therapy and rehabilitation services.

EvergreenHealth Financial Stewardship In 2019, EvergreenHealth continued investing in several initiatives to expand and enhance patient care as part of its 10-year Master Facilities Plan to upgrade the health system’s infrastructure and facilities, to meet the community’s needs as they grow and evolve.
The organization realized a net income of $27.1 million in 2019, while investing $27 million in community benefit services including charity care and subsidized health services, and it contributed $27.9 million toward significant capital improvement projects across the EvergreenHealth system.

Message from the Board Chair and Vice President Dear Friends, Thank you for another year of incredible support. Our community and you, our generous partners, continually inspire us. Your commitment and investment in the EvergreenHealth Foundation allows us to assist the organization with much-needed financial support for innovative programs and grateful patient projects. Our investments in 2019 have advanced patient safety and expanded the care we provide to every life we touch. With our community’s continued growth comes the need for sustained support of the programs and services that EvergreenHealth provides to our patients and community. 2020 started as usual and then took a real turn in March, as EvergreenHealth and EvergreenHealth Foundation were put at the forefront of the COVID-19 crisis. We are very proud of the response by all clinicians and hospital staff, who responded to the outbreak in our community with swiftness and with the highest level of safety and quality. We are also proud of our community members, as well, who rose to the challenge to care for our front line staff and clinicians. Donating PPE, nourishing the staff with meals, bringing hand lotion and socks, delivering Girl Scout Cookies, and sending wonderful heartfelt notes of gratitude and encouragement had a profound impact. EvergreenHealth and EvergreenHealth Foundation greatly appreciated these selfless efforts. Thank you for your continued support in both the good times and the challenging times. Message from the Board Chair & Director Dear Neighbors, In 2019, our Foundation delivered on the promise made to improve the quality of care at EvergreenHealth Monroe. Along with our philanthropic partners, EvergreenHealth Monroe Foundation made significant investments in the infrastructure and equipment our dedicated team of caregivers use every day.

At the beginning of 2019, EvergreenHealth Monroe opened a new Cancer Care Center in collaboration with physicians at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Having a Cancer Center right here in Monroe means patients no longer need to drive long distances to receive high-quality and state-of-the-art cancer treatments. This is a massive win for our community!

One of the projects we are most proud of is the redesign and renovation of the Healing Garden located at the center of the hospital, outside of our patient rooms. This project was completed with funds raised by the Foundation and a group of dedicated master gardeners. They volunteered their time to make the garden a calm and tranquil environment to be enjoyed by staff and patients.

Our signature Blue Jeans and Boots Gala was a roaring success and raised $193,000 to invest in critical equipment nurses use every day to care for patients. Some of the equipment included lifesaving AED and LifePak devices used when a patient is in cardiac arrest and new IV pumps with updated medication libraries.
