Hello Huntsville! I hope this note finds you well and unscathed from the holiday season. As we enter the year 2015, I find myself astonished at just saying the year 2015. I recall as a child imagining the year 2000 and what the world will be like; what my life will be like. And here we are in 2015, which still resonates in my mind as such a futuristic time period. It seems the older we get, the faster time flies.

We’ve been busy this season with many events across the county including Autumn Evening, The Liz Hurley Ribbon Run to the Debutant Ball. From the Margarita Ball followed by the BMW Brunch to the Galaxy of Lights at Huntsville Botanical Gardens, there is never a shortage of events and causes to get behind in Madison County. If you don’t already realize, let me be the first to inform you this is a wonderful community in which to live, work and have a great time.

If you haven’t taken advantage of the exciting events over the holiday season and had the chance to tour the transformation our downtown area is going through, please take some time and visit some of the restaurants that have opened. Taco Mama and Asian Rim are both located in close proximity to the new Publix Supermarket. Walking out of these restaurants after dinner in the evening will give a native Huntsvillian the sensation of a new city. I am amazed at the wonderful revitalization we are going through. And there are some key players downtown to thank for what is happening. Mayor Tommy Battle and the City Council, Scott McLain, Charlie Sealy and Chad Emerson among many others who look to the future for the betterment of our wonderful city.

We hope you continue to enjoy seeing the familiar faces along with the new in this issue. Don’t forget it is the businesses in the community who allow us to provide our publication. Happy New Year! As we ring in the celebration of a new year full of new opportunities and possibilities, it’s always good to remember those who may not be as fortunate. The myriad events we covered for this issue all benefit wonderful causes: from the Margarita Ball’s direct impact by providing toys for children in north Alabama to the Liz Hurley Ribbon Run raising awareness for breast cancer research and providing support to its survivors.

Huntsville itself has seen some improvements and community commitment to making this city as exciting and vital as possible. Victorian Cotillion

The Gothic Guild is pleased to announce that 39 young girls will participate in the 2015 Victorian Cotillion Club sponsored by the Gothic Guild. The club was chartered in 1985.

Each year its members are given six weeks of instruction emphasizing the timeless social graces that continue to befit today’s lifestyle.

Social activities preceding the Victorian Cotillion will include a mother-daughter tea, a dinner at Valley Hill Country Club and a father-daughter social. The cotillion will be held at the VBC North Hall on March 14, 2015.

The girls are chosen by an anonymous community committee of five who are in no way connected with the Gothic Guild. They must be 16 years of age or enrolled as a sophomore in a high school in the city of Huntsville or in Madison County. Other criteria for selection include a good academic record, demonstration of leadership through participation in school, church, social and civic activities.

Enhanced by a delightful dinner provided by Bubba’s Silver Spoon and the rhythms of Patton James and The Synchromatics, over 200 Friends, Inc. supporters and volunteers enjoyed a cool breeze and breathtaking views from Baron Bluff during the annual Autumn Evening with Friends at Burritt on the Mountain, Friday, October 17th. The fundraiser brought in $33,000, exceeding last year’s goal.

All proceeds go towards a variety of ancillary services for Madison County residents who are suddenly affected by a serious illness or disability. Friends, Inc. was the brainchild of Dr. Dale Griggs and the late Laura Binger, who in 1998, saw a gap in the medical system that leaves many people isolated and unable to get to doctor’s appointments or to their treatments; to the grocery store; or to pick-up their prescriptions.

In some cases, they can no longer cook for themselves or clean their homes after their diagnoses.

Cadence Bank Holds First Holiday Party of 2014 at Clinton Avenue Open House Written by Kimberly Ballard

Cadence Bank, headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, recently purchased the failing Superior Bank chain with their five Madison County locations, infusing them with capital from Cadence’s solid financial base of $7.3 billion in assets. However, when CEO Sam Tortorici’s daughter visited her dad at the 312 Clinton Avenue location, she blurted out that it was the “ugliest and tackiest” bank in the city. Her father and the Huntsville leadership team couldn’t agree more!

So out of the mouths of babes, Cadence renovated both the interior and exterior of the old building into a

Runners and walkers, dressed in pink, flooded the streets behind Huntsville Hospital for the 11th annual Liz Hurley Ribbon Run on October 18th.

Many of the runners and walkers have been affected in some way by breast cancer and all of the participants were there to raise money to fight a disease that affects one out of eight women in the United States.

“The event, featuring a 5K run and Survivors’ Walk, has become the largest 5K in the area and a north Alabama tradition with more than 6,600 participants,” said Huntsville Hospital’s Director of Marketing April Windham.

In addition to the 6,643 participants of the race, thousands of friends and family members stood on the sidelines to cheer the runners and show their support. This year’s event hit a new record and raised over $338,000, which will help purchase digital tomosynthesis equipment for Huntsville Hospital’s Breast Center.

The Liz Hurley Breast Cancer Fund at Huntsville Hospital started the race in 2004 as the signature fundraising event for the organization, which helps support programs that build awareness about breast cancer and purchase cutting-edge equipment that helps with early detection.

Josh Whitehead was the first to cross the finish line with a time of 15:32. Catherine Greenwell was the first female to cross the finish line with a time of 19:38.

“The real ‘winners’ [of the race] are women from across north Alabama, especially breast cancer patients who have a much better chance of early diagnosis thanks to leading-edge technology made possible by the generosity of Ribbon Run sponsors and participants,” Windham said. n

26th Annual Von Braun Memorial Dinner Celebrates Huntsville’s Contribution to the Business of Rockets Written by Kimberly Ballard

Always aligned to coincide with the Wernher von Braun Memorial Symposium held at UAH in October every year (October 27-29), the 26th annual Von Braun Memorial Dinner opened with a reception for all attendees at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, October 29th at the Davidson Center for Space Exploration.

Welcoming nearly 800 guests from all over the country, the Memorial Dinner is the largest fundraiser of the year for the National Space Club (NSC).

to speak at the Dinner, but was called away after the disappointing explosion of the un-manned NASA-contracted Antares rocket the day before.

Guests included visitors from the Washington DC and Cape Canaveral chapters of the NSC, contractors, subcontractors, local members of the space community, and NASA-Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) brass.

The Symposium is a weeklong networking, problem-solving, and panel discussion of space exploration issues and challenges. Started in honor of Wernher Von Braun and the important work he did here in Huntsville, the Memorial Dinner has been a longstanding Huntsville tradition. The City’s continuous work done on a daily basis with the International Space Station (ISS) and the City’s contribution to the business of building rockets is always showcased at the prestigious event. n

Celebrating 10 years of making Huntsville beautiful At Advanced Life Clinic, we want to be each patient’s lifestyle coach and help them achieve the look they want, both inside and out. Our ultimate goal is to help each and every person that comes through our doors to look, feel and be their very best.

I started the clinic in 2004 doing non-invasive cosmetic procedures such as Botox, facial fillers, laser hair removal, IPL and other treatments. As much as I enjoyed helping my patients look their best, I wanted to offer them more than just a more youthful appearance. I wanted them to feel more youthful and revitalized as well. I originally was very interested in anti-aging and a whole body approach to wellness; however, those weren’t really mainstream at the time.

At Advanced Life Clinic, every action we take is with the goal of how we can best serve our patients.

I added wellness and anti-aging in 2008. Wellness focuses on hormone balance, fitness and diet and nutrition as we age.

In 2009, I added weight loss to our treatments. We felt like weight loss worked well with the aesthetics and wellness because weight can have such a negative impact on our overall well-being. It affects both our self-esteem and our health in so many ways.

Aesthetics, weight loss and wellness; I personally believe that all three aspects of what we offer really affect others. If someone loses weight they’re healthier, they feel better physically and they feel better about themselves. Our aesthetic patients approach us if they want to look younger or have bothersome skin conditions; they may feel self-conscious because they feel like they look older than they are. Our wellness patients may feel fatigued with hormone imbalance.

Once patients finally feel better and refreshed after we get their hormones balanced and they want to do something nice for themselves and begin some of our aesthetic services. It’s so rewarding to see our patients feel better and to truly start a journey to being their best.

Halloween may have been over, but the spooky spirit was still going strong at the Botanical Gardens for the 3rd annual Growing Hope Gala. Over 120 guests attended the party, and about 90 percent of those guests showed up in costume. “We had Minions, bees, nerds, Rosie the Riveter, Cruella DeVille, the Mad Hatter AND Alice in Wonderland, just to name a few!” said Cindi Williamson, executive director of New Hope Children’s Clinic.

The Growing Hope Gala began in 2012 as a fundraiser to benefit the New Hope Children’s Clinic, which was housed in a single-wide trailer on the grounds of New Hope Elementary School. “The patient load was increasing faster than providers could see them, and we wanted to be able to provide dental and vision care as well,” Williamson said. “Staff and volunteers needed more space. Thanks to funds from Growing Hope that first year and last year, we now have a wonderful building. We also have dentists seeing patients twice a week and an optometrist here once a month.”

The evening was hosted by Amy and Chris George and was organized by the NHCC’s Board of Directors. Chairperson Terra Tusler, board members Laura Hale, Jeff Brown, Kathy Abelos, Phyllis Holland, board president Steve Rowles, and NHCC’s medical director, Dr. Libby Nord, were also among the attendees.

A silent auction was held during the dinner, which raised more than $30,000 for the children’s clinic. “All money goes toward the medical care of the children in New Hope who would not otherwise be able to receive regular medical care,” said Williamson. n

In search of a fun social fundraiser that would appeal to a broad audience, the Huntsville Chapter of the Alabama March of Dimes hosted the 4th annual Signature Chefs’ Auction at The Westin Ballroom on October 27th and raised $46,000 for research and education programs. Eight local chefs from Catering By Narvell, Nick’s Ristorante, Sage Grille at the Westin, Bubba’s Silver Spoon, Kathleen’s Catering, Scene Restaurant & Lounge, 2 Men in a Kitchen, and BD Catering Company volunteered their time and donated the food to the event so all guests could enjoy a delicious selection from each chef’s menu.

Huntsville Botanical Garden held its Galaxy of Lights VIP Party on November 12 at Nichols Arbor. The event, in its 19th year, is a “thank you” for Galaxy of Lights sponsors.

About 275 attended the festive holiday party that featured music, food, drinks, and a Galaxy of Lights atmosphere.

Galaxy of Lights is a 2.5 mile holiday light extravaganza featuring larger-than-life animated light displays, according to the Garden. Those who attend can see Santa soaring over a delightful winter village; watch nursery rhyme characters dance and frolic among traditional scenes of the season; and experience the magic of the twinkling icicle forest. Other exhibits include a holiday village, wild animals, garden scenes, animated snowmen and the 12 days of Christmas.

The event has been recognized by the Southeast Tourism Society as a Top 20 Event for many years, according to the Garden. It has also been included on the American Bus Association’s Top 100 Events.

Huntsville Botanical Garden is located at 4747 Bob Wallace Ave. It is open yearround and features the nation’s largest open-air butterfly house, a picture-perfect aquatic garden, spectacular nature trails, numerous specialty gardens – including an interactive children’s garden – and a variety of plant collections. The 112-acre Garden is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization run by 35 employees and more than 2,600 active volunteers.

The night was dark and stormy as 300 crazed scientists descended on Sci-Quest on October 18th. Ok, not really. The night was pretty pleasant, but the 6th annual Mad Scientist Bash definitely boasted an atmosphere (as well as tons of lab coats) that would have made Dr. Emmett Brown and Marty McFly proud.

The Mad Scientist Bash is Sci-Quest’s biggest adult fundraiser, with all proceeds going to the numerous educational programs that it offers. Sci-Quest has an impressive Science Center, but also brings the scientific fun to children throughout the Tennessee Valley via their Traveling Science Outreach program. Over 22,000 students each year benefit from these science-loving programs.

Guests were invited to visit each of the center’s science stations before sampling some delicious goodies provided by Fire & Spice and Sweet Thing Pastries. The party gained momentum when local rock band JED Eye took the stage accompanied by a digital light show courtesy of LED-Orange. Attendees were also encouraged to participate in various “mad scientist games” including demonstrations with fire and molecular gastronomy.

In addition to notable guests, such as former astronaut Dr. Jan Davis and Representative Phil Williams, creative costumes were on display. At one point, about 10 mad scientists were seen boogying with several vampires and even beloved astronaut Jim Lovell.

“We wanted to create a unique event that people could ‘let their hair down’ at while supporting their local Science Center,” said Development/Marketing Director Jennifer Deermer. “We wanted the Mad Scientist Bash to reflect the fun we have every day teaching children (and adults) about science, technology, engineering, and math.” n

Taking It Personally: Exercise Tips from a Personal Trainer What should someone look for in a personal trainer?

A personal trainer should have the ability to assess a person’s exercise goals and then design a workout that fits those specific needs. Trainers should understand that what works for one person may not work for another. For instance, for those with low back pain, trainers should know a variety of core exercises that can help them. Whether it is to fully protect the back with a BOSU ball while doing sit-ups, or to spread the feet apart while doing lower abdominal exercises to alleviate pressure to the lower back, they should be well-versed on the different options.

Tyrone Harris received his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Auburn University. He is certified through the American College of Sports Medicine as a Health Fitness Specialist. He has worked with a diverse group of clients in the areas of fitness and wellness.

Tyrone has experience working with children, adults and the elderly with physical conditions ranging from those with chronic diseases to athletes. He is currently a Clinical Exercise Specialist with the Huntsville Hospital Wellness Center. He spends his free time running, gardening and volunteering.

What should I incorporate into my exercise plan now that I’m 50+?

You should consider adding more balance, hand/eye coordination and fine motor skills training into your workout regimen. For instance, you should be able to stand on one leg and stand up on your toes without losing balance (try this on each leg).

Why is it important to have a personal trainer?

It is important to have a personal trainer to assess your capacity for exercise and tailor each workout for your specific needs.

It’s also good to have accountability and stay motivated. They can provide a variation of exercises for you and help you achieve goals that may not have been possible on your own.

I’ve had previous health issues (cardiac arrest, or knee replacement). Is it ok for me to exercise? If so what should I do?

Yes. First you should get medical clearance to exercise. Then, have a certified Exercise Physiologist or Personal Trainer assesses your capacity to exercise and develop an exercise program based on your specific needs. With a history of heart disease, you should limit weight bearing exercises over your head. People with knee replacements should limit high impact exercises and avoid certain lunging type activities.

I am cramped for time. Is there a workout I can do to incorporate both strength training and cardiovascular fitness?

Yes, it’s called circuit training. Circuit training keeps you moving from exercise to exercise with little time in between for rest.

During circuit training, you want to make sure to keep your repetitions high and weight moderately low, thereby staying in an aerobic state during the workout. In doing this, you burn more calories while also increasing strength. Circuit training works even better with a partner because it allows even less time for rest by moving in and out of different exercises.

Sit on BOSU at 45 degree incline, and medicine ball in your hands. Pass ball to partner as you remain in inclined position as partner passes the ball back to you. Repeat 15 to 25 times.

With Feet supported on BOSU ball (centered), and forearms supported by stability ball; straighten your body by tightening your abdominals, and placing pressure on your elbows and balls of your feet. Hold for 15-75 seconds.

Do: Keep abdominals braced and hands at the ready.

Do Not: Continue exercise if lower back begins to hurt.

Do: Press through your elbows so that there is space between your chest and the stability ball.

Do Not: Let your Lower Back Sag or let your chest touch the ball.

This exercise is a great exercise for Leg Strength Begin standing upright, feet together. Step forward by bending both knees until forward and back knees are both 90 degrees. Return to standing position by pushing through the left heel returning to the upright position. Repeat on each leg while moving forward.

Do: Keep your forward knee in line with your ankle. Bend your rear leg until it is 1 inch from the ground.

With knees supported by stability ball and hands slightly wider than shoulder width apart, allow your elbows to bend and lower your body towards the ground until your chin touches the floor. Then push yourself back up to starting position. This exercise is great for upper body strength as well as core strength and stability.

Do: Only lower yourself to a comfortable position if you feel uncomfortable touching your chin to the floor. Keep abdominals tight to protect your lower back.

Do Not: Let your lower back sag; or do exercise if you have shoulder pain above a level of 5 during the lowering phase.

Do Not: Let your forward knee go past the toes or let your torso fall forward.

Other Notes: If bending knees to 90 degrees causes knee pain, try bending your knees partially.

Eat Better, Feel Better: Easy Meals for a Busy Schedule What part does nutrition play in your overall health?

Good nutrition should be your first line of defense against most diseases. Hippocrates said it best: "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food." A healthy diet will improve diabetes, heart disease, elevated blood pressure, GI issues, and many other diseases.

Anna Key attended Samford University where she received her Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics in 2005. She has been employed at Huntsville Hospital’s Wellness Center since 2006 where she performs individual nutrition counseling for weight loss, diabetes, cardiac rehab, eating disorders, sports nutrition, intestinal disorders and gastric bypass. She is also an instructor for weight loss classes held at the Wellness Center and appears on ABC, CBS and NBC affiliate channels.

She is a native of Huntsville and lives with her husband Kyle and 8 month old daughter Evie.

What is your recommendation for a fully rounded meal (breakfast/lunch/dinner)?

Breakfast and snacks: Try to eat a carb and a protein together.

For example 1T peanut butter (protein) and an apple (carb) or 1 oz. 2% cheese (protein) and 4-5 crackers (carb). Yogurt is great for breakfast and snacks, especially Greek yogurt. Low fat milk and an unsweetened cereal with at least 4 grams fiber and a cheese stick can be a good breakfast Lunch and Dinner: Think of your plate divided into fourths.

One-fourth protein (3 oz), 1/4 starch or grains (beans, peas, brown rice, whole wheat bread etc.), 1/4 fruit (or save your fruit for a snack) and make 1/2 your plate veggies!!!

Include healthy fats such as nuts, avocados, canola or olive oils. Get fiber from beans, peas, popcorn, whole grains, fruits and veggies rather than fiber added to foods.

What are some tips to keeping yourself from getting hungry or eating badly on the go?

Plan ahead. Have fruits, yogurt and water in your refrigerator at work. Grabbing a quick snack will help keep you from feeling famished. People who skip meals or go too long between meals usually over eat when they finally sit down to eat. Try to eat on a schedule and include small snacks to help you get through the day. Avoid turning to sweets and high fat snack foods. They only satisfy for a short period of time and you are usually hungry again!

In the New Year, many people are looking to drop a few pounds. What are some basic principles to follow when trying to lose weight?

It takes eating about 3500 calories less in your diet to lose a pound of weight. If you reduce your calories by 500 every day for 7 days you have cut out 3500 calories and lost a pound.

Do it slow and allow for some treats. Don’t set unreasonable goals but think of it as a lifestyle change that’s important to you and your health. You may reach plateaus but if you continue exercising and controlling your calories you will lose weight.

We hear about lots of “fad foods.” Are some of the trendy food items we hear about worth incorporating into our daily diet?

The latest food in vogue is kale. It is a super vegetable with lots of nutritional value and low calorie. You can make your own kale chips by simply placing the kale on a baking sheet and cook at 400 degrees for about 10 minutes. Watch closely.

Most people just need to eat more vegetables and fruit. Some of the super foods include broccoli, turnip greens, spinach, tomatoes, fatty fish such as salmon and tuna, nuts, beans (great fiber and protein), blueberries, oranges, and yogurt. Eating these foods will make a difference in your health.

Linda Steakley, MS RDN LD Linda Steakley, a Registered and Licensed Dietitian, is a graduate of the University of Alabama with a BS and Master’s Degrees in Nutrition. She was the first dietitian hired to work at Huntsville Hospital Wellness Center over 18 years ago. She created the nutrition department and developed numerous nutrition programs.

Linda currently works with the Bariatric Program, has a full counseling and speaking schedule, and works with local agencies to develop nutrition programs. She has served on various national committees and is active in the local and state Dietetic Associations.

Linda presents media messages almost weekly regarding topics in nutrition for local television stations.

Wacky White Chili Parmesan Fish 1 lb. tilapia or other fish about 4 pieces 4 Tbsp. reduced fat mayonnaise 4 Tbsp. Parmesan cheese pepper to taste Mix Parmesan cheese and mayonnaise in a bowl. Cover fish with mixture.

Grill or bake at 350 degrees until fish is done. Don’t over cook the fish or it will be dry. Check it after about 15 minutes.

Serve with wild rice and steamed zucchini for a yummy meal!

4 cups chicken broth, fat free 1 tsp. lemon pepper 1 tsp. cumin 1 -2 lbs. chicken breasts, cooked & shredded 1 large onion 1 tsp. garlic powder 1 Tbsp. chili powder 4 oz. green chili, optional 1 Tbsp. lime juice 2 cans Northern beans 1 can tomatoes and chilies (i.e. Rotel) Combine all ingredients and simmer about an hour. Can add a sprinkle of mozzarella cheese and a dollop of low fat sour cream (or plain yogurt).

Salmon Cornbread Cakes

Linda & Anna’s Spinach Quiche

2 cups crumbled cornbread 2 Tbsp Light Mayonnaise 3 green onions, thinly sliced 3 large eggs or ¾ cup egg beaters 3 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley 1 tsp Old Bay Seasoning 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce 10 oz can of salmon or herb & garlic flavored tuna 3 Tbsp canola oil

1 (10 oz.) box frozen, chopped spinach 1 c. skim milk 8 oz. skim mozzarella cheese, grated ½ tsp. Salt 2 Tbsp. flour 2-3 dashes ground nutmeg 3 eggs, beaten ½ tsp. minced garlic 1/8 tsp. Pepper ½ tsp. onion powder

Stir together mayo & next 5 ingredients in large bowl. Fold cornbread and tuna into mayo mixture. Shape into 8 (3X3inch) patties. Add oil in large skillet on medium-high heat. Cook tuna patties 2-3 minutes per side or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.

Microwave spinach. Squeeze out excess water with paper towels. Combine all ingredients and pour into a 9” Pyrex pie dish.

Bake at 350° for 45 minutes or until done in the center. Let stand 10 minutes before cutting.

Serve with fruit salad and raisin bran muffin.

Serves 6.

Calories = 167, Fat = 7 g Exchanges = 2 meats, 1 fat, 1 vegetable

Classic Fruit Salad 2 apples, cored and chopped ¼ cup raisins 2 pears, cored and chopped 2 tsp. lemon juice 1 orange, peeled and sectioned 1 cup plain, low fat yogurt 1 banana, sliced 1 Tbsp. honey 1 cup blueberries Wash and cut all fruit. Combine in large bowl with raisins and walnuts. Sprinkle with lemon juice to avoid discoloration. Combine yogurt and honey and serve as a side dressing or toss with salad.

Serves 6, ½ cup per serving Per Serving: 180 calories, 3 grams fat, 4 grams fiber

Mediterranean Wrap 1 80-100 calorie low carb tortilla 2 Tbsp. Hummus 2 Tbsp. Reduced Fat Feta Cheese Spinach Can vary by adding roasted red peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and other vegetables.

Over 400 people clad in festive attire and military finest were on hand to usher in the holidays at the 2nd annual Redstone Arsenal Garrison Gala. Held at the U.S. Space and Rocket’s Davidson Center, it was an opportunity for Redstone to promote community spirit and celebrate the season.

AMC Band’s Brass Quintet set the cocktail hour ambience. The evening’s featured entertainment was the 82nd Airborne Division All-American Chorus was and Pink Cadillac provided the dance music.

Color Guard was provided by James Clements H.S. ROTC cadets. William Marriott, Army Materiel Command’s Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel served as the evening’s emcee.

The acquisition of a state-of-the-art endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) machine used in the diagnosis of lung cancer was the goal of the 29th annual BMW Brunch at Century BMW on Sunday, November 23rd.

Benefiting the Southeast Lung Alliance who is working in collaboration with Huntsville Hospital (HH) to streamline the diagnosis process, the Huntsville Hospital Foundation’s annual fundraiser held the Sunday before Thanksgiving every year, welcomed 265 members of the medical community, HH patrons, and financial donors.

Catered by Cotton Row, the formal brunch laid out in the Century showroom featured a build-your-own Bloody Mary and Mimosa Bar, and showcased the new four-foot high EBUS diagnostics machine, which was on display.

According to HH Foundation event coordinator Katie Rose Norman, the Southeast Lung Alliance is a new

HH partner that is working with the local health community to expedite lung cancer screenings and diagnosis, a relatively new capability in lung cancer research.

“Currently, if tests show an abnormality or spot on a patient’s lungs, the shortage of equipment means patients are bounced around to multiple facilities and doctors, and the wait for confirmation and treatment is up to six months,” Norman said. “By working with the Southeast Lung Alliance and utilizing the EBUS equipment, patients will be seen within two weeks.”

Bestselling Southern author Frances Mayes, the first speaker in the Huntsville Museum of Art’s (HMA) Voices of Our Time 2014-15 lecture series, joined Huntsville Museum of Art’s Executive Director Christopher Madkour for a private VIP Sponsors’ Luncheon at Cotton Row on Thursday, November 13th. Sponsors Chef James and Suzan Boyce of Cotton Row hosted the luncheon with a special three-course meal with wine from his private menu. They were among other series’ sponsors who enjoyed the opportunity to chat one-on-one with Mayes. Her 1996 memoir “Under the Tuscan Sun: At Home in Italy” was adapted in 2003 into a popular film starring Diane Lane, who portrayed her.

Sealy Realty started in Tuscaloosa in 1955 by Charlie Sealy’s late grandfather, a family-owned commercial real estate and property management company still run by his dad and headquartered in Tuscaloosa; but Charlie not only opted for Vanderbilt over the University of Alabama where he grew up ― he nearly passed on real estate as well!

When we bought the empty Belk Hudson building, we gutted it except for the exterior brick walls facing Holmes and Washington Streets. As is common with a renovation as opposed to a new build, we have 75 apartments and 50 unique floor plans. They have a rooftop patio overlooking the city, exposed brick, steel beams, angular walls, and some have the original windows.

“I didn’t intend to go into real estate but after college, I saw a lot of young professionals moving to modern cities like Dallas and Nashville where they had revitalized downtown areas that were appealing to their active lifestyles,” he said. “They weren’t ready for families and the suburbs. Their lifestyles were more urban-oriented.”

EVENT: Tell us about your new downtown project.

CS: We begin construction on The Avenue in January or February. It is two-and-ahalf times larger than the Belk Hudson Lofts project and is located on the empty corner of Holmes and Jefferson Streets. It will have a 21,000-square-foot retail and commercial component with 193 apartments above it. There will be a big landscaped courtyard with a pool and amenities area with a European-style open plaza facing Jefferson Street with lots of tabletops perfect for outdoor dining, and retail spaces flanking it. We have already signed leases with restaurants and we have a lot of retail interest and boutique-style shops.

As Charlie and his wife and business partner Sasha started traveling, Charlie discovered a hidden interest in architecture. Encouraged by his grandfather and inspired by Sasha, they bought and began renovating an Old Town bungalow in Downtown Huntsville.

EVENT Magazine sat down with Charlie to discuss the many rental properties he and Sasha are involved in, as well as the popular Belk Hudson Lofts and a new downtown property called The Avenue breaking ground in early 2015.

EVENT: I remember just a decade ago that Huntsville infamously rolled up the streets at nine o’clock.

CS: Downtown commercial revitalization is great but it needs residential to support it. We travel a lot and if you look at what is happening in Nashville, Charlotte, and Greenville for instance, we felt there is a market for that kind of rental project here in downtown Huntsville. We see a revival going on across the nation of people wanting to move back into downtown areas where there is less driving and more walkability. They are even willing to give up square footage if they can live in a neat location with some character ― and Downtown Huntsville has plenty of character!

We will have everything in terms of apartment living from studios to one, two, and three bedrooms ranging in size from 620 square feet to 1,753 square feet. The décor will consist of original brickwork, cast stone, and exposed beams to maintain that old downtown industrial warehouse feel, but will also have all modern tile, lots of glass, modern fixtures and cabinetry, and granite counter tops.

It will also have a five-story parking deck and over 400 parking spaces with a secure parking garage for residents. We expect to begin leasing by late 2015 and the whole project should be finished by spring 2016. n

Since buying and renovating our bungalow downtown, Sasha and I became intrigued with the idea of starting a residential renovation project. We enjoy taking walks or jogging down to Big Spring Park. We frequent a variety of restaurants and shops, street markets and artistic festivals. We attend art shows at the museum and concerts and plays at the VBC; but we noticed there was not a lot of residential options downtown. We thought, ‘If we enjoy it this much, surely other people will enjoy it too.’

Bringing people to the downtown area enhances the quality of life for the whole city. I really think we are just at the beginning stages of it. I’m personally making a big investment in it because I think some great things are coming.

EVENT: There are many empty buildings downtown, there certainly appears to be a lot of potential.

CS: When I look around, there is all this potential, but it’s difficult because we have so many projects ongoing and you can really only work on a project or two at a time.

We have ten apartment properties in Huntsville and we had built about 500 new units before renovating the Belk Hudson building downtown; but because those are suburban living properties, they don’t stand out as much.

Since its inception in 1988, the Hospitality Industry Reception has been held to show the CVB’s appreciation for area residents who play an active role in bringing tourism, conferences, conventions and special events to Madison County. What better way to kick off the holiday season than with an evening of bagpipes, Irish dancers, delicious food, and whiskey tasting?

Over 200 people flocked to the Jackson Center on November 21st for 5th annual Huntsville Irish Christmas and Whiskey Tasting for a night of food, fun, and, of course, whiskey.

Patrons enjoyed the evening with an appetizer course of Irish cheeses and a full Irish buffet provided by The Jackson Center. Straight to Ale provided beer for the evening.

For entertainment guests were treated to bagpipe music courtesy of The Ian Sturrock Memorial Pipe Band, as well as the lovely Irish dancers from the Fitness Arts Center.

This year was unique with the addition of a stage so the dancers could be seen and heard throughout the venue.

After dinner came the much anticipated whiskey and chocolate tasting led by whiskey expert, Marty Connors (“The Whiskey Whisperer”), from the Birmingham Irish Cultural Society and chocolate expert Jennie Johnson from Dove Discoveries.

All money raised from the event benefits veterans through the organization, Still Serving Veterans.

"At Still Serving Veterans we are passionate about helping veterans and their families receive all the benefits and services they have earned," said Shannon Drake, Director of Community Relations and Outreach for Still Serving Veterans. "This year was the max that we have seen over the history of this event. Every year this celebration grows."

Eric uses his skills as an accomplished Sommelier to create an extensive wine, beer and liquor list. He will also gladly assist any patrons in selecting the perfect drink to pair with their entrée.

“We carry a very eclectic beer and wine [selection],” said Eric. “Our wine list is very esoteric and we carry craft products from all over the world.”

The fast-paced kitchen is led by the talented Executive Chef Marko Palazon. Marko uses his extensive training in European and South American cuisine, as well as his 15 years of restaurant experience, to create delicious, well-balanced dishes. Guests particularly enjoy the popular appetizers like the House-made Burrata, which features their homemade mozzarella wrapped around ricotta and marscapone, and Fried Brussel Sprouts tossed with bacon and drizzled with honey truffle oil. Pizzas like the Pepp-urrata pizza topped with house-made mozzarella and burrata cream have a big presence on the menu; but the entrees are dazzling as well, with dishes like the Brick Oven Baked Salmon served over a potato hash with horseradish cream and cherry gastrique and two different Risotto dishes.

Cork & Crust works to create food that all their patrons can enjoy, even those with dietary restrictions. In addition to providing many vegetarian dishes, they offer a large selection of gluten-free options, including gluten-free pizza. There are also children’s options that will satisfy younger guests with picky palates.

The annual Huntsville Symphony Ball is one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the season, and this year’s fete left no one disappointed. Held at the Von Braun Center’s North Hall, the ball is sponsored by the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guild. This event dates back to 1964, and just as it was 50 years ago, the main goal of the night is to raise financial support for the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra. The Symphony Ball has raised over $2.5 million since its inception.

Amanda Conger Blogger - “Huntsville Eats” Food blogger and restaurant reviewer Amanda Conger has a passion for all things local, especially locally grown and produced cuisine. She is the creator of the blog Huntsville Eats, which specializes in local foods and has over 200 restaurant reviews from the Huntsville area. Urban Spoon ranks Amanda as the #1 food reviewer in Huntsville.

AC: A friend was planning on starting a local website to cover dining, movies, politics...pretty much anything of interest to someone local. I had been making an effort to try more restaurants and signed up to be a food reviewer. By the time it became clear that his site wasn’t going to gain any traction, I was pretty attached to the idea, so I started my own site.

EVENT: Why did you want to blog about food?

AC: I love food. I joke that my marriage is based on food because it’s been such a constant theme—we cooked and baked together before we even started dating.

I specifically wanted to blog about local restaurants because I wanted to encourage other people to look beyond the big chains and support local businesses. It’s always a risk trying someplace new. What if you pay good money for terrible food or awful service? So people feel safer going to a chain they’ve tried before. But we have lots of great locally owned eateries that are not only offering wonderful food and service; they’re creating jobs and keeping money in our local economy.

EVENT: What are some things that have surprised you about having a blog?

AC: How kind and respectful my readers are. When I started the blog, I braced myself for mean comments. I was writing a blog whose sole purpose was to share my opinions and I knew that my readers wouldn’t always agree with me. I have been pleasantly surprised to find that while my readers are perfectly happy to let me know they disagree (which I appreciate and encourage), 99 percent of the time, it’s done respectfully. I don’t think that’s true of the broader Internet and I cherish it.

EVENT: What are your recommendations for someone wanting to start their own blog?

AC: Write. Write as much as you can, whenever you can. Unless you have done a lot of writing before, it may take you awhile to find the “voice” and rhythm that feels natural to you, but the only way to find it is to write. Also, know that there is no one “correct” way to blog. What works for someone else may not work for you and vice versa. You define what success is. It’s okay to write for the joy of writing or for self-expression or to be part of a community; it doesn’t always have to be about page views and ads.

EVENT: What does it mean to eat ‘local’?

AC: That’s a thorny question. The US Congress defines it as eating food which was grown or produced within 400-mile radius of where it will be consumed. That’s a mind-bogglingly large area, from Huntsville that would touch 15 states! I prefer to define “local” as food which is grown or produced within a 100-mile radius of Huntsville or restaurants within a 50-mile radius. Those are distances that I am willing to drive to enjoy a meal or purchase food.

EVENT: What are some of the benefits of eating local?

AC: There are lots of reasons people eat locally: everything from improving the economy to ethical treatment of animals to better health. I have an extended list on the blog, but for me personally, I love supporting the small businesses in our community.

And I find that local food almost always tastes better because it is fresher.

EVENT: Do you have plans for expanding for your blog in the future? If so, what are they?

AC: I have more ideas than time to implement! In the short term, I plan to introduce a directory, which will make it easier to search for restaurants reviewed on the site by attribute. I would also like to continue to expand the number of contributors and local food topics, which we cover. n

19th Annual Margarita Ball On November 22, 2014, the Von Braun Center South Hall was packed to the max with those looking to share their Christmas spirit - and have a blast while doing it. The 19th annual Margarita Ball hosted nearly 1,500 guests and collected over 2,700 toys for the children of north Alabama, beating their goal and last year’s total of 2,400. The purpose of the ball is to collect and distribute these toys to designated local charities as Christmas gifts for underprivileged children who otherwise might not see such a merry Christmas.

The Huntsville Margarita Society, a group of 40 men who represent a large cross

section of the Huntsville community, was formed in 1995; they have funded and organized this event each year since its inception.

“Our toy quality this year was tremendous, our guests exceeded our expectations,” offered Margarita Society Social Media Chairman Brandon Price. “2,703 children across north Alabama will have a great Christmas.”

And all those in attendance enjoyed a great time that night. Party Nation, a band out of Atlanta, Georgia, kept guests dancing to a variety of favorite tunes; Christmas-themed decor, including the

giant Christmas tree under which all the presents were gathered, lit the South Hall up like the North Pole; and Rosie’s Mexican Cantina, Ted’s BBQ, Granville’s BBQ, the VBC, Tim’s Cajun Kitchen and Olde Towne Coffee provided a delicious spread and refreshments, including the complimentary namesake margaritas.

There’s always something growing on at the Huntsville Botanical Garden! The Beaks and Barks Festival will take place mid-January through the end of February so you can enjoy the Garden during the coldest months of the year. Explore the Lewis Birding Trail, included on the North Alabama Birding Trail Map, and be part of the global Great Back Yard Bird Count, February 13 – 16. For the Barks part of Beaks and Barks, bring your favorite four-legged friend to the Garden each day to stretch your legs – and theirs--and play some fetch in a “No Leash Zone.” Here, your dog can play offleash with his pals while you make friends with other pet parents. Visit William Thomas’s exhibit “En Masse” at the Garden through March 5, displayed in the Boeing Education Center and Murray Hall. His large paintings display both foliage and florals, mainly in acrylic on canvas.

2015 is just brimming with special events and activities. You can always count on a great experience at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, so be sure to catch “101 Inventions That Changed the World:” an immersive experience that explores the turning points in human history, from the invention of Stone Age tools to the Internet. The talented staff at the Center has also created an exhibit of 101 Rocket City Inventions. I was amazed at the great inventions that came out of our community. Both exhibits are included in admission to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, so plan your visit today!

This holiday season, people across north Alabama opened locally produced and locally purchased gifts, thanks to the popular charity event Under the Christmas Tree.

The 30th annual Randolph School event took place at the Von Braun Center from November 7th to the 9th.

Over 10,000 shoppers purchased everything from handcrafted foods, unique clothing and Christmas ornaments to vintage jewelry, toys and much more. This year’s event had 94 vendors including the popular Mooresville Mercantile, Shoe Fly, Morgan Price Candy Company, The Laurel Tree and Personal Couture, and new vendors like Madison’s King’s Olive Oil. There were also numerous events for children including a pancake breakfast and photos with Santa, gingerbread house decorating and holiday crafts with Randolph School’s art teacher David Howse.

“Our new event, Holiday Crafts with Mr. Howse, was a huge hit,” said Director of Randolph Community Relations Abby Guasti. “Kids of all ages loved making a beautiful holiday decorations.”

The Randolph Young Voices Choir and Middle School Band also performed during the event to get people into Christmas spirit.

This year’s Under the Christmas Tree raised over $100,000. All of the money raised goes to Randolph’s tuition assistance program, which awards over $600,000 in annual assistance to its students.

The main sponsors of the event included Twickenham Wealth Advisors, Jerry Damson Honda Acura, Bassett Furniture Direct, and Ragland Brothers Retail.

“This event is presented by Randolph School, however, it would not be possible without the hard work of our many volunteers,” said Guasti. “Most of these volunteers are Randolph parents and it is a labor of love for them, that is what makes it such a wonderful and successful event each year.” n
