Here we stand with yet another season in the books. Where did summer go?

I’m not feeling nostalgic about the heat or humidity, only the time with friends and family, swimming pools, lakes and beaches. The summer, as sweltering as it has been, was special this year. Being of an age to really understand what our families did to help make history and celebrate the 50th anniversary of their accomplishment has been eye-opening for me. Growing up in Huntsville, where seemingly everyone had a family member associated with the space program, was unique.

We found ourselves enveloped in NASA and the programs, and it just didn’t seem as big a deal as it really was and still is. Feeling the ground vibrating and the thunderous roar of the space shuttle engines was like hearing a fire engine or ambulance sirens echoing along the Parkway. Being able to appreciate the mark Huntsville has left on our country’s history instills the pride I have in calling it home.

If you enjoy bourbon, you will enjoy this issue. The editorial feature, The Kentucky Bourbon Trail® Experience, is full of information to ensure you can traverse the beautiful landscape while tasting what the Bluegrass state has to offer. The equestrian farms will be an added bonus! The farms between Louisville and Lexington are some of the most memorable I’ve ever seen.

Please enjoy the faces, familiar and new, that we’ve captured at some of the fundraising events we’ve been invited to cover. Please keep in mind these individuals have given their money and time to help make Huntsville a great place to live. Without the support of the local community, the nonprofit organizations, which play an important role, would cease to exist.

Can I use the cliché: time flies? It certainly has for me. I hope you’ve enjoyed the summer that seemed to pass at Mach speed. With fall approaching, it’s time to settle in for cooler temperatures, (wishful thinking?) football and just maybe a fall trip.

Since September is National Bourbon Heritage Month, may we suggest a road trip to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail®, where you can sip and savor your way across the Bluegrass? This issue, we shine our Spotlight on Dr. David Rushing, who added the distinction of being head of the team that delivered the first set of sextuplets at Huntsville Hospital, to his career in healthcare. At Centerstage, Huntsville singer/songwriter Josh Allison chatted about his life in music.

Throwing a Bash for the NICU Photos by Steve Babin Huntsville Hospital Foundation’s 14th annual Miracle Bash raised essential funds for the Regional Neonatal ICU at not-for-profit Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children.

Proceeds will help expand the unit by adding 10 new patient bed areas to serve more sick and premature babies from across North Alabama.

Almost 400 guests attended the event on August 2 at the Huntsville Botanical Garden Grand Hall. The Isaiah 41:10 Foundation held its inaugural event on July 18 at the Huntsville Depot Roundhouse to launch its mission: honoring the memory of 9-year-old Sam Harmon (a leukemia patient who lost his battle in 2016) and help support vital research in the battle against pediatric cancer.

The 430 guests included Dr. Jennifer Cox, St. Jude Huntsville Affiliate Clinic; and area children and families of children who are battling or have lost their battle to pediatric cancer.

With fare by Hartley’s Catering and Batter Up Cakes, flowers and décor were provided

by Mitchell’s Florist and Banners by Short Stop Screen Printing. Tom Schuster and audio/visual support by Sound Source Productions provided entertainment. Twenty-eight young women will make their debut at the 2019 Symphony Ball November 2. The young women, who have completed their freshman year of college, enjoyed their first week of the season with three activities: the Debutante Tea at the home of Mrs. Laura Malone, a special Debutantes and Presenters event at the Von Braun Center, and two service projects: one for the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra and the other for Huntsville Hospital.

They continue the time-honored Huntsville tradition, which began anew this summer. The Symphony Ball season will culminate with their debuts at a gala event on November 2 in the Von Braun Center North Hall.

Louisville Begin in Louisville, where the official drink is the Old Fashioned. The Frazier History Museum partnered with the Kentucky Distillers’ Association® to form the The Kentucky Bourbon Trail® Welcome Center, which

Included in the welcome center is a professional and friendly concierge service that can help visitors plan trips to distilleries throughout the state and show them how to navigate the hot spots of Louisville’s burgeoning bourbon, culinary and nightlife scenes.

Distillery operations do not run on Sundays, but a limited (and discounted) tour is available.

Don’t miss: - The Spirit of Kentucky Bourbon Exhibit – look for the special speakeasy entrance From the welcome center, Whiskey Row beckons. With four distilleries within a one mile stretch of Main Street, it’s an easy walking tour.

At Mitcher’s Fort Nelson Distillery, see the pot stills from the original Michter’s Pennsylvania Distillery, which traces its history back to 1753. Test your senses in the lab and finish your tour off in the second-floor bar. Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Two blocks away, visit the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience, just a stone’s throw from where Evan himself used to send barrels down the river. Tickets for the experience can be purchased online up to one hour in advance. Walk-ins are welcome on a first-come first-served basis. Open daily.

Next, stop in at Old Forester Distilling Co. for four floors of bourbon education. You’ll see barrels being

Lawrenceburg Area From Bardstown, travel 16 miles to Maker’s Mark in Loretto, Ky. Settle in for a delicious, southern meal at Star Hill Provisions, and get a cocktail or alcoholic Ale-8-One slushy. Tours given daily.

Bardstown To continue your journey, head to historic Bardstown – the Bourbon Capital of the World®. At the Heaven Hill Bourbon Heritage Center, visit the nation’s largest family-owned spirits producer, making brands such as Elijah Craig, Larceny, Henry McKenna and more. Enjoy samples in the barrel-shaped tasting room. Tour tickets can be purchased online up to one hour in advance.

Walk-ins are welcome on a first-come first-served basis.

Tours are available Monday-Friday.

With a different take on bourbon, visit Angel’s Envy, where they age bourbon in ruby port wine casks, giving it a subtle depth of flavor. Tours are by reservation only.

At the ultra-modern Rabbit Hole Distillery, learn how the owner fell in love with bourbon as he fell in love with a girl, and what drives him to make what he considers the best bourbons and ryes. Tours by reservation only, maximum of 10 people per tour. No tours on Mondays.

Just five miles from downtown Louisville, take in the Bulleit Frontier Whiskey Experience. Housed in the historic Stitzel-Weller Distillery, which originally opened on Derby Day in 1935, it’s one of the true cathedrals of the American whiskey industry. Closed on Tuesdays.

The History of America’s Native Spirit Bourbon, America’s whiskey has a storied past. Necessity and ingenuity came together for the birth of bourbon, as American settlers, many from Scotland and Ireland combined their knowledge of distilling with the bounty of local crops, namely corn. Bourbon was less expensive than imported liquors and easy to distill and transport.

Established in 1785, Bourbon County is one of Kentucky’s oldest counties. As an early hub of the whiskey trade, farmers shipped whiskey in oak barrels stamped from Bourbon County down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, all the way to New Orleans. The long trip aged the whiskey, while the oak wood lent it a distinct mellow flavor and amber color.

As whiskey from Bourbon County grew in popularity, the liquor became known simply as “bourbon.”

In 1964 Congress declared bourbon a “distinctive product of the United States,” giving it special trade protection in overseas markets, and naming it, “America’s Native Spirit.”

In August 2007, the U.S. Senate declared September National Bourbon Heritage Month.

Josh Allison is a musician with a soulful sound who plays at many popular venues around town, either solo, with a band, or partnered with his singer/songwriter wife Judy.

EVENT: What kind of music did you listen to growing up?

What were your biggest musical influences?

JA: The atmosphere in my home growing up in Scottsboro with two brothers and five sisters was that of a spinning radio dial.

Every single space was filled with music from different genres.

Motown, blues and rock were the most influential in my personal style. This variety might explain my song list selections at shows.

EVENT: Do your kids share in your love of music?

JA: YES! All four of them LOVE music. They all have access to instruments, and a couple of them have had some formal instruction. Sometimes the piano is fought over! They all love to create on their own.

EVENT: What inspires you to perform with such joy and energy?

JA: Music has been such a huge part of my life that I feel like I can’t do anything else than to give every song more than 100%.

If I can play one song and lift someone’s spirit and brighten their day, that’s what it’s all about! True story: I was having a bad day, played a set at a gig, went on break, and had an older gentleman stop me and say, “I’ve had probably the worst day of my life today, but it hasn’t seemed as bad since you started playing. I was going to leave, but you’ve been playing songs that take me to a better/simpler time in my life, and I want to thank you.”

EVENT: You’ve released a lot of music in the past few years that has received great press. What do you have in the works now?

JA: First, I want to give credit to my wife and music partner, Judy for being the driving force behind all of that. She pushes me to be my best, and she organizes the details. She believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. She is also my songwriting partner and penned most of these releases along with me.

By the time of press, we will have just released our first live album recorded at Panoply 2019. The [Josh Allison Band] sounded so great, and the crowd gave so much to us, we did our best. When Judy and I listened to the playback, which was only intended for a YouTube video sampler, we loved every song and decided we had to release it. We plan our next project to be a full record. n

Dr. David Rushing is a resident of Huntsville and a doctor of obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Rushing made headlines as the head of a team of doctors, nurses and specialists who delivered the first set of sextuplets at Huntsville Hospital.

EVENT: How long have you been practicing, and what led you into the field of obstetrics/ gynecology?

DR: I have been practicing in Huntsville since 1990 and practiced in Mississippi a couple of years prior to that. During summers in college, I worked in a large OBGYN group in my small town of Amory, Mississippi and was drawn to the mix of medicine and surgery that the field provided.

EVENT: What feelings remain with you now, over a year after the births, from heading up such an incredible landmark event at Huntsville Hospital?

DR: Gratitude is the main emotion I feel, and from all those involved. The hospital was willing to go above and beyond their duties in their preparation for this event.

They incurred the extra expense of renting extra neonatal equipment for the event and kept it ready for a long period of time to have it on standby in the event that we would need it sooner than planned. The responses from the administration, the nursing staff and the all medical staff was truly exceptional. n

EVENT: What did it mean to you to deliver the first set of sextuplets at HSV Hospital?

DR: [The expectant mother] had been a patient of mine for years when she presented with sextuplets. She asked me to take care of her during this pregnancy and I was honored to do so. We discussed the associated risks involved with a high order multiple pregnancy. It was both a very exciting and anxiety-provoking experience.

EVENT: How difficult was it to orchestrate all the medical staff for the delivery and how many people were involved?

DR: The hospital was extraordinarily helpful. Both the administration and clinical staff were excellent in their preparation and willingness to facilitate the safest delivery possible. It took many hours of practice as it involved both neonatal intensive care unit nurses, physicians, respiratory staff, OR staff and anesthesia. We had multiple drills at all hours of the day and night because all shifts had to be ready in case of delivery, which could not be predicted. Each shift had about 42-43 people ready at all times.

EVENT: How much risk was involved to the mother and the babies in such a daunting situation?

DR: The risks involved are significant. The risks involved to the babies include developmental problems, notably breathing issues. The mother is at risk of congestive heart failure, pulmonary edema and amniotic embolus delivery.

EVENT: Did you and the members of your staff feel a special connection to the family as you all shared the journey from conception to delivery?

DR: Yes – [she] was an amazing patient in that she did everything she could do to prolong the pregnancy. She was in the hospital the last month of her pregnancy.

Obviously. The nursing, neonatal and medical staff developed a special connection to her and her husband, other children and extended family. I think a large number of them still keep up with them on social media.

EVENT: Did the delivery go as planned, or were there any surprise circumstances?

DR: Luckily, there were no unexpected occurrences and surgically the delivery went as well as you could expect. We had elected to schedule a delivery at thirty weeks gestation and [she] went into labor two days earlier than this, early in the morning.

Fairly quickly, all the teams were notified and we proceeded with a cesarean delivery a couple of hours later.

EVENT: How are the babies now? And how is the family after their large growth spurt?

DR: The babies are a little over a year and a half now – and are all running wild and doing very well. [The parents] seem to be doing fine as well. Actually, you can tune in and watch this extraordinary family and learn more about their lives on the show, “Sweet Home Sextuplets.”

Around 500 guests attended the seminar, which began with lunch and keynote address from Allison Black Cornelius, CEO of The Greater Birmingham Humane Society.

Photos by Jessa Harris The Huntsville Symphony Orchestra held its inaugural Summer Night Symphony at Calvary Hill Community Center on July 13. The event served to expand the HSO’s concerts and education into different parts of the city.

Around 450 guests attended. Tha Food Truck and IceWorks Shaved Ice were on hand to provide fare for guests. A lobby art installation was displayed by Arts Huntsville.

Pre-concert activities were provided by Arts Huntsville, Fantasy Playhouse and the HSO, plus a special guest performance by Element XI. The benefit concert allowed the HSO to donate $1,860 each to Boys & Girls Clubs of North Alabama and Village of Promise. Jane and Brian Hinson’s h204CHRIST Foundation fund matched the $3,720 in donations. The event was made possible by sponsor Woody Anderson Ford.

Honor Prom Raises Funds for Anniversary Journey

Photos by Steve Babin Because many WWII veterans missed their proms while serving their country, Forever Young Senior Veterans honored them on July 27 at the Insanity Entertainment Complex.

The event raised nearly $100,000 to allow 18 WWII veterans to revisit Europe during this year’s 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.

The 300 guests included heroes Sherwin Callander, Harold McMurran, George Mills, Charles Henry, Cloyce Drake, Pat Patterson, Otis Brannon, Earl Miller, Howard Polin, Major Wooten and Bud Hill.

Bubba’s Silver Spoon provided fare, while flowers donated by Sandra and Tom McKinney, USMC Ret., were assembled by volunteers under the direction of Holly McDonald of Keller Williams. Entertainment was by JED Eye, and auctioneer Tim Knox of Revolved Realty.

The festivities culminated with the presentation of the Victory Court and its King and Queen, Harold and Ruth McMurran, who have been married 72 years. McMurran landed on Utah Beach on D-Day, continued fighting through the Battle of the Bulge and served during the Korean War.
