Tommy Siniard grew up in Gadsden, Alabama, and went to the University of Alabama, graduating with an undergraduate degree in Political Science. He then attended the University of Alabama Law School, graduating in 1980.

Bart Siniard was recognized by the University of Alabama Law School by being selected Senior Editor of the school’s JOURNAL OF LEGAL PROFESSION, a well-known publication focusing on legal ethics and professionalism. Siniard, a 2013 University of Alabama law grad, also received the prestigious Super Lawyers “RISING STARS” award. Bart has won trials at the District and Circuit Court levels and recently obtained a $275,000 verdict in Federal Court in a case where the defendants offered ZERO. He has also been selected to serve on the Huntsville Committee of 100 and was selected to be an officer in the Huntsville Madison County Young Lawyers Association. Bart obtained a unanimous Supreme Court decision in 2017 and is one of the youngest Alabama attorneys to ever do so.

William Messervy is a 2011 graduate of the University of Alabama School of Law, where he graduated Order of the Samaritan, which is the highest award for public service while in law school. Messervy is fluent in Spanish and has had success representing all members of our community. Since graduating and working for the firm, he has received numerous accolades, including being selected for the past five years by Super Lawyers as a recipient of the “RISING STARS” award. In 2017 – 2018, he was selected by the National Trial Lawyers as one of the “TOP 40 UNDER 40” for the state of Alabama. In 2017 – 2018, he was also awarded the Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent Peer Review Rating, which is awarded only to those lawyers with the highest ethical standards and professional ability.

Siniard has been continuously engaged in the practice of law for 38 years and has been practicing personal injury law, almost exclusively, for the last 30 years.

Teamwork Matters “I am proud and excited every day to be working in our pod with young attorneys Bart Siniard (my son) as well as William Messervy, plus four accomplished and dedicated paralegals – Suzanne Bailey, Sinead Bass, Tanya DuBoise, and Sarah Patterson. In the last three years, together we have achieved three of the largest civil outcomes in the Tennessee Valley $6.25 million in an industrial accident case, $4.5 in a car wreck case, and $3.75 million in a medical malpractice case. Both William Messervy and Bart Siniard have already gained state and national accolades and recognition for their superior legal work and legal skill.

Finally, I am most proud of the fact that our firm received the Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year award from the Alabama State Bar Association in 2014 for our service to individuals who are incapable of paying attorney’s fees. Pro Bono means free service for the public good. I only wish that my parents had been alive to see that, as they were good and giving people. It is an accolade that they would’ve respected more than any other.

Accolades and Community Service: “I am proud that our firm, Siniard Timberlake and League has achieved the highest ranking available from Martindale-Hubbell, the most regarded legal ranking institution in the United States. We carry an AV Preeminent Rating, which less than 1% of all the law firms in the country have obtained. The “A” stands for legal quality; the “V” is the highest mark for ethics. I am also very proud that I and our firm have achieved U. S. News and World Report’s Best Law Firms for Personal Injury designation. I have been selected by the authors of The Best Lawyers in America, consecutively for 23 years (1995 – 2018), as well as by Super Lawyers, consecutively since 2009. The National Trial Lawyers selected me as one of the Top 100 Trial Lawyers.

Welcome to fall, y’all. It’s been as hot as Hades this summer, but the silver lining is fall is around the corner. We have been very fortunate to have the rainfall we’ve had over the summer. With the wildfires in the west, I think we need to be counting our blessings. Things can always be much worse.

In this issue we’ve been covering the many events that have taken place over this summer. I hope you all have enjoyed your summer with relaxing vacations on sandy beaches, mountain cabins or exploring faraway lands. I have been living vicariously through Facebook posts, soaking in the pictorial travels of my social media friends because someone had to keep the home fires burning.

Along with football season, the fall event season will be cranking up. Please get out and enjoy the beautiful weather that will be coming our way, and support the many nonprofit organizations fundraising for their causes. They are of vital importance to our community and help to make Huntsville one of the best places to live, work and raise families.

When I was a kid, Halloween was fun, but it was not really a big deal. We dressed up, went to a few houses for trick or treating, then called it a night. As a college student, I remember a few costume parties, but still, Halloween was just a blip.

Then I married a man whose birthday is on Halloween. In the nearly 20 years we’ve been married, it’s been a major production every year! Most years we host a costume party, where I have an excuse to leave the cobwebs where they are.

We seat the Grim Reaper at our piano and decorate the front flower bed with gravestones, and that’s just the beginning.

In this issue of EVENT, we decided to make Halloween a big deal too. In our feature you’ll find photos of some locals in costume, plus all kinds of ghostly fun to be had in Huntsville for this haunted holiday.

We shine our Spotlight on Phillip Otto, Artistic Director for the Huntsville Ballet, whose extensive career in dance means world-class expertise for that organization.

Our Business Profile features the story of how the owners of Church Street Wine Shoppe and Purveyor brought their passions for food, wine and art to life with their business. At Centerstage, meet bestselling author and practicing attorney Robert Bailey, who recently released a new book in his legal thriller series.

Photos by Isaiah Williams The American Red Cross held their 15th annual Tiffany Gala on Friday, June 8 at the Grand Hall at the Huntsville Botanical Garden. The event serves to recognize donors and volunteers who support the mission of the American Red Cross.

Around 250 guests attended including donors who were honored from the Tiffany and Humanitarian Circles, plus Gala Chair Brandy Brannon Smith. Dinner was catered by Bubba’s Silver Spoon. The artists at In Bloom arranged flowers for the event. Attendees were entertained by The Flashbacks Show Band. Sponsors included the Tiffany and Humanitarian donors as well as Damson Automotive.

Halloween in Huntsville How do pumpkins, dressing up, ghosts and goblins all add up to a holiday? The ancient Celts knew a little something about that. For them it was Samhain; the eve of their new year, the end of the harvest, and the beginning of the dark days of winter. They lit sacred bonfires to ward off evil spirits and bad omens, wore costumes and told each other’s fortunes. Sounds a little like a modern day Halloween party, eh?

Here in Huntsville, there’s no shortage of celebratory spirit – no pun intended. From ghost tours and cemetery strolls to a train ride to pick the perfect pumpkin, there’s something fun or frightening around every corner.

We asked our readers to get involved in the first part of our feature by sending photos of their favorite costumes and Halloween home decor.

Next, we’re rolling out the creepy carpet with ideas for food, cocktails and decorations for the hottest Halloween party. We’ll finish with a host of Halloween “haunt” spots, so the only limit on your fun will be finding time for everything!

Eat Drink and be scary When it comes to party fare, let ghoulish be your guide. Collect creepy containers for your chips and salsa. Create cocktails that are extra chill with icy floating fingers. Make your neighbors as green with envy as Frankenstein’s monster with your deathly chic décor.

Witch Finger Breadsticks Ingredients: 1 package pizza dough ¼ cup water Almond slices ¼ stick butter, melted garlic salt Parmesan cheese Directions: Preheat oven to 450°.

Unroll dough and cut into ½-inch rectangles.

Create shallow ridges/indentations for the knuckles with a knife. Attach almond slices as fingernails. Brush with butter; sprinkle with garlic salt and Parmesan cheese.

Bake for 8-10 minutes.

Haunting Halloween Cocktail Ingredients: Pomegranate juice Champagne or sparkling wine Pomegranate seeds Directions: Mix pomegranate juice with champagne (one part juice to two parts champagne.) Add pomegranate seeds to the glass.

For an extra eerie touch, rim glasses with “dripping blood” by mixing 1/4 cup corn syrup with a few drops of red gel food coloring in a bowl just larger than the glass. Dip the glass rim and keep suspended upside down for 30 seconds. Flip the glass upright and place on waxed paper until it’s done dripping.

Huntsville Ghost Walk If you dare, walk into the shadowy past of Huntsville’s chilling history – Beware, you may not be alone!

Southern nights are full of unseen creatures – crickets, frogs, cicadas, and ghosts. According to guides on the Huntsville Ghost Walk, the ghosts can’t wait to let their presence be known! The three different walking tours were formed after exhaustive historic and paranormal research, in addition to the amazing findings of an outstanding medium.

A walking tour through main streets and dark alleys of historic downtown yield true tales of Huntsville’s fascinating past. Some of the homes on the ghost walk date back 200 years, as do the early residents who seem reluctant to let go. The Haunted Trolley carries visitors to the Huntsville Depot where Civil War soldiers wait for the train that will take them home. Tour guides of the Huntsville Ghost Walk remind visitors to bring cameras and take plenty of pictures. Perhaps, they say with a sly wink, you might just discover that someone from Huntsville’s past is watching you!

The Huntsville Ghost Walk runs every Friday and Saturday night, September and October, beginning at 6 p.m. Tours start at Harrison Brothers Hardware Store on Southside Square. Tickets for the walking tour are $10 for adults, $5 for kids 12 and under.

On Friday and Saturday nights in October, the Haunted Trolley runs from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for kids 12 and under.

More Local HAunts Scarecrow Trail With weekend hayrides, a picturesque Pumpkin Patch, and of course, the ever-popular Scarecrow Trail, nothing says family fun like fall at the Huntsville Botanical Garden!

This year, in honor of their 30th birthday and to coincide with the Gardens of Myth exhibit (now – October 31) the HSVBG asked 30 artists, families, and businesses to create the best trail ever with “Mythical & Magical Scarecrows of Legend.” The 30 scarecrows are along the Dogwood Trail and Mathews Nature Trail.

The Children’s Garden will be decorated during October with its own display of mythical and magical scarecrows (created by schoolkids) pumpkins galore, and a fun exhibit in the BOO-terfly House the last weekend of the month!

In September and October, The Garden offers Weekend Hayrides on Saturdays from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

And to truly get into the spirit of the season, join them for Scarecrow Trail Night Hikes on October 9, 12, 25, and 30 at 6 p.m.

Bring your camera to capture the beauty of autumn in the Garden and don’t forget to visit the Pumpkin Patch for a family photo.

Maple Hill Cemetery Maple Hill Cemetery is a treasure in the middle of Huntsville! This beautiful and historic cemetery is one of the few listed on both the Alabama State Historic Register as well as the National Historic Register of Cemeteries. Although owned by the City of Huntsville, there are limited funds to repair and maintain headstones, markers, monuments, walls, and ironwork within the historic portions of Maple Hill Cemetery. That’s why volunteers from Huntsville Pilgrimage Association hold a once-a- year “living history” afternoon so everyone can learn about its history and to raise money in a perpetual challenge against the effects of time and erosion.

On Sunday, October 21 (rain date: 10/28) you are invited to spend a beautiful autumn afternoon talking with past citizens from the Revolutionary War, the settling of Huntsville and Twickenham, the Civil War, the tragic influenza outbreak of 1917, the owner of an underground railroad house, the madam of the local brothel, a young mill factory worker, an award winning cow, five Alabama Governors, an international film and stage actress, a slave who rose to start a University, and over 70 other interesting personalities who have wonderful stories to tell about their lives.

The Maple Hill Cemetery Stroll,* one of the largest in the country, will begin at 1:30 p.m. on main avenue near the cemetery office building. This year the event will feature a short rededication of the historic 1818 cemetery plaque. This will be followed by a GRAND STROLL PARADE of over 70 actors who have painstakingly researched the lives and costumes of the souls they represent. Some are even direct relatives of their character. The actors will then move to their respective gravesites to share stories with the public from 2:00-4:30 p.m. *The Stroll is a family friendly, free event but contributions are encouraged from the community. Water and restrooms will be available as well as free shuttle transportation from the courthouse square with free metered and municipal garages on Sunday. Sorry, but no pets are ever allowed within the cemetery.

Robert Bailey is the bestselling author of the McMurtrie & Drake legal thriller series. “The Last Trial” is the third novel in the series. For the past eighteen years, Bailey has been an attorney with the Huntsville law firm of Lanier Ford.

EVENT: You’ve had a new book come out recently [on May 8.] What’s it about?

RB: This book is called “The Last Trial” and it’s the third book in the McMurtrie and Drake series. It’s been a number one new release for legal thrillers on Amazon.

The story is a murder mystery set in Tuscaloosa, but has flavors of Madison County in it. There are a couple of scenes set in Huntsville and Hazel Green.

EVENT: How do you find the time to write while working full-time and with a family?

RB: (Laughs) Well it’s not easy. My best time to write is early morning starting at around 5 a.m., to get a couple of hours in before work. I give myself a break sometimes, especially if I’ve stayed up late because one of the kids had a late-night baseball game.

EVENT: Speaking of your kids, do they share your love of stories and writing?

RB: My two sons [ages 12 and 13] are into baseball and my daughter [age 7] plays t-ball and loves horseback riding. They enjoy reading, and I think they think it’s cool that their dad’s a writer. They’ve had assignments where they write journals in school; it’s fun for me to watch them do that.

EVENT: How does your family inspire you to write?

RB: I take a lot of inspiration from them. When I was writing “The Last Trial,” both my father and wife [Dixie] were diagnosed with lung cancer. That experience had a tremendous impact on me. It was good therapy to be able to work through my feelings in the story. The main theme of the book is resilience, which took inspiration from what Dad and Dixie were going through. Dad has since passed away but Dixie is in remission. I hope my stories entertain but I also strive for them to give people hope as well.

EVENT: What are you working on now?

RB: The fourth book, “The Final Reckoning,” will close out the McMurtrie and Drake series. It is due to come out in April 2019. I’m also planning to write the first book in a new series which will be a spinoff of the McMurtrie & Drake series.

Stephanie Mell is passionate. Her unabashed love of wine, art and charity has found the perfect synergy in her businesses. Both Church Street Wine Shoppe and its younger sibling, Purveyor, are warm indications of her open, approachable and welcoming personality. She and her husband and business partner, Matt, welcome you and make you feel like you have come back home every time you enter.

The Mells have not always lived in Huntsville. In fact, during their time spent living in Los Angeles, they developed a passion for wine and wine bars, which were on practically every corner. When they moved to Huntsville, they saw that it was devoid of places like the wine bars they had come to love. They missed the casual, laid back, unpretentious spots that they used to go enjoy a glass of wine, without the noise and lack of privacy in a traditional bar. With Stephanie’s impressive background in business and strategic planning, they got to work and decided to try and fill the niche, spending the next three years planning and seeking out the right venue. They knew they wanted a place similar to the California wine shops they adored. Stephanie stated, “It all came together and Church Street Wine Shoppe was born in Downtown Huntsville in 2014.”

Purveyor followed in 2017.

The spaces are equally appealing, depending on your mood. You might choose to relax with a nice glass of cabernet and read a book by yourself at the artsy, homey, Church Street location. Or opt for fine-dining in a cool uptown-meetsdowntown vibe at Purveyor and grab a flight of Stephanie’s favorite spirit, gin, infused with varying wonderful essences like lavender. Either way, there is no dress code and no need to stress about going home to change after work. There are ladies in workout gear and men in suits. “Come as your are” is a golden rule.

And people certainly are coming. The wine club that Church Street started has over five hundred members. “The club meets monthly for a five-course wine tasting with exclusive farm to table food pairing. All dinners include a speaker, some with the actual wine-maker flying in to explain and discuss their wines,” explained Stephanie.

Another of Stephanie’s passions is art. A Long Island native, she attended college in New York and holds an art degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Stop, linger and look around the walls at both locations (go early before it gets too crowded for lingering to be practical.) All the art you see at Church Street Wine Shoppe is by local artists and is available for purchase. The art is rotated every three months to allow the most artists the greatest visibility at these unique gathering spots.

The completing piece of Stephanie’s “Passion Triad” is charity. Upon moving to Huntsville, she worked exclusively for local charities from 2011- 2014.

Once they opened Church Street, she could no longer devote herself full-time to the work, but she remains committed to giving back and to helping others.

An amazing way that her three passions merge and complement each other is when a new artist debuts their art on the walls of Church Street Wine Shoppe.

Each artist is asked to choose a charity of his or her choice and the Stephanie arranges for most of the proceeds of the debut event to benefit that charity.

This encapsulates Stephanie’s lovely philosophy for her businesses: Drink wine, appreciate art and give to charity—all at the same time. Amen. n

It’s almost Halloween. That most macabre of all holidays when we celebrate the dark side, embrace the eerie and deck the halls with boughs of horror. The only time of year ghosts are art, vampires are sexy, and spiders are accessories – the supreme season of spooky, shady and scary thoughts and deeds. I admit I have chosen to embrace it. The evil spirits descended and demanded from me gaudy decorations many years ago. I fought them to no avail as they put disgusting décor everywhere. I saw my weak friends give in. I tried to resist but the frightening allure of the tacky noir drew me in. I accepted the facts. The hideous box store décor had eclipsed the serious art of decorating. So, I decided that since I couldn’t beat them, I might as well join them and see what the rage was all about.

Though counter-intuitive, embracing tacky can be quite inspiring. Halloween decorating allows you to be completely free to do whatever your evil little heart desires. You are liberated, maybe even encouraged, to use bad taste. So, let go and let your inner goblin guide you to make your home, party or dog house as scary and morose as possible.

Remember, this rule can only be followed once a year.

Forget the cute, tasteful, painted and monogrammed pumpkins primly stacked by the front door. Never mind the intricately carved designs on those lovely, pristine jack-olanterns. This is not the season to be jolly. This is the season of Chucky and Hannibal Lecter. Check Casper the friendly

ghost at the door. We want real ghosts, like Sally Carter, talking to us through Ouija boards. Cute and cuddly have their rightful place – alongside the adorable Easter Bunny, in Spring.

But now, in Autumn, we must give the Wicked Witch of the West her due. We understand her with her twisted, hateful, green face emitting her horrid, screeching cackle as she careens wildly on her wicked black broom (accompanied, of course, by her band of terrifying flying monkeys.) Her ultimate mission is to be always be in your nightmares- and to forever inspire your Halloween decorations.

So, sit in a dark, quiet, musty Victorian room and channel your inner Morticia Addams. Now, follow her lead.

Glue some hairy spiders all over a wall covered in huge webs. Put a dimly lit skull in a dark window. Have a party of skeletons toasting each other in your front lawn. Hang sheets transformed into ghostly forms from your trees and watch them spookily dance in the wind as the leaves on the ground rustle in harmony.

Watch Halloween, Silence of the Lambs or Blair Witch Project to get in the mood. Pour a glass of red wine and pretend you are a vampire for a night. Then, look through your closets and sift through your mind and let your creativity lead you to your best Halloween decorations ever. n

Their special guest and keynote speaker was none other than NBA superstar and Alabama native, Charles Barkley. The event is the club’s biggest fundraiser of the year and included a silent auction with the meal catered by the VBC. The Leaders & Legends Dinner was sponsored by Hiley Automotive Group.

The annual event is the way the organization keeps the doors open to their eight clubs, serving more than 900 kids daily in north Alabama. Family Fun Fest Benefits Free 2 Teach Photos by Steve Babin The VBC hosted the 5th Annual Family Fun Festival & Expo benefiting Free 2 Teach on June 9 in the South Hall. Family Fun Festival & Expo supports families, fun and learning. The event was free to attend with a monetary donation or school supply donation to Free 2 Teach and was filled with free activities, door prizes, giveaways, music, dancing, and more. With features like inflatables, face painting, bumper cars, bungee jumping, train rides and even an arcade, the festival entertained kids of all ages. Vendors focused on three areas; Live, Laugh and Learn. Live focused on information about lifestyle; Laugh referred to quality of life and entertainment; and Learn focused on education and development. Each vendor fit into one these categories to offer a rewarding experience to those who attended. n

Charity Ball Honors Veterans PEOPLE • PLACES • PARTIES

Photos by Steve Babin The 4th Annual Black Tie Charity Ball was celebrated on August 4 at the VBC’s North Hall. The event served to raise funds for local veteran’s organizations. With 215 in attendance, special guests included The Tut Fann Veterans; WWII veterans from Forever Young; Guest Speaker MG (Ret) Lynn Collyar; Judge Ruth Ann Hall, Madison County Veteran’s Court Judge; and Mr. David Cochran, CASA’s Board President.

The ball was created to support selected Tennessee Valley nonprofit organizations that provide assistance to all veterans and serving soldiers and civilians - active duty, retirees and their families. Proceeds from this year’s event benefit The North Alabama Veterans and Fraternal Organizations Coalition. The event was sponsored by Boeing, RiVidium, CALIBRE, COLSA, Lockheed Martin, ASPA and ASMDA.

Hope Gala Gives Helping Hand PEOPLE • PLACES • PARTIES

Kicking off the evening was a silent auction and social hour with music provided by fusion violinist, Winslow Davis. Dinner and a dessert and coffee bar followed, provided by the Jackson Center Culinary Staff. Emcee for the evening was WHNT-TV’s Steve Johnson.

Proceeds from the Hope Gala benefited two local charities: Manna House and Young Life. Manna House is a public charity that provides food assistance to those in need, including a nightly food distribution, Meals of Hope, a backpack program and mom-to-mom Program. Young Life is a nonprofit organization that reaches out to nearly 1.5 million middle school, high school and college students in communities across the United States and around the world—providing role models, safe activities and a sense of significance to these students. n continued on page 68

Redstone Arsenal’s Oktoberfest is always a fantastic event with plenty of German food, drink and entertainment. The Big Spring Crush Wine Festival is expanding to a weekend-long event. Spotlight Phillip Otto has served as the Artistic Director for the Huntsville Ballet since 2008.

From ballet student to instructor and director, Otto’s far-reaching presence in the world of classical dance affords The Huntsville Ballet Company a world-class leader.

changed when I found out I had cancer. During my battle with the nasty disease, I realized that I should be doing what I love, which is teaching ballet and passing on the information I was given by some of the greatest artists in the world.

EVENT: Where did you grow up?

PO: I grew up in New York State as one of seven children who were all dancers.

My mother was a ballet teacher.

EVENT: What made you decide that Huntsville was the best place to do your work?

PO: The city of Huntsville picked me. After I visited the city, I fell in love with it.

EVENT: What/who was your inspiration for ballet?

PO: I grew up in the ballet studio while my mother was teaching [but] my greatest inspiration was music. When I got a little older my inspirations were George Balanchine and the New York City Ballet.

EVENT: How were you involved in dance and performing when you were younger?

PO: As a young dancer, I studied at The School of American Ballet (Official School of the New York City Ballet.) I was a member of the Metropolitan Opera’s children’s chorus and danced with New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, London’s Royal Ballet, the Stuttgart Ballet and the Bolshoi Ballet.

EVENT: Your dance background is extensive. What are some of your favorite career productions or performances?

PO: (George Balanchine’s) “Who Cares,” The Four Temperaments, Western Symphony, Concerto Borocco, La Valse, Symphony in C, Nutcracker, Prodigal Son, Midsummer’s Night’s Dream, (Cranko’s) Romeo and Juliet, (Limons) Moor’s Pavane, (Forsythe’s) Love Songs, (Lynn Taylor-Corbett’s) Brahms Sonatas, Code of Silence, The Quilt, Great Galloping Gottschalk, and Final Draft, among others.

EVENT: How did you become the Artistic Director for The Huntsville Ballet?

PO: That happens to be a long story, but basically, I had quit the world of ballet and bought a general store in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. One day my life

EVENT: What is your vision for the ballet? What plans do you have for its future?

PO: My vision is to develop and create a professional Ballet Company for the city of Huntsville. My mission is to use the power of dance to inspire and nurture the art of classical ballet through artistic excellence, performance experiences, and education and outreach activities in the community. The company holds a long and rich history in the art of dance and is working to expand and challenge its repertoire. The Huntsville Ballet Company brings the finest quality of dance to the region, performing ballets such as The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, The Firebird, and The Sleeping Beauty among others. Each year, The Nutcracker affords students from the Huntsville Ballet School the opportunity to audition and perform with the Company at the Von Braun Center Concert Hall with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra.

EVENT: What are some of the common challenges you face in this line of work and how do you overcome them?

PO: FUNDING! It is no secret that the economy in recent years has had a tremendous, negative effect on arts funding and support. Some arts organizations in Huntsville have been forced to reduce their presence, which hurts not only the organization and surrounding businesses, but also the community as a whole.

EVENT: What do you like to do outside of this work: family, hobbies?

PO: I enjoy spending time with my wife Rachel, my son Nathaniel and my daughter Julia Bea. I also enjoy spending time in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, hunting, fishing and splitting wood. n

Kids to Love Scholarships Give a Hand Up PEOPLE • PLACES • PARTIES

Photos by Steve Babin Kids to Love celebrated their 14th annual Scholarship Luncheon on July 19 at the Huntsville Museum of Art. The organization awarded 40 scholarships to youths in foster care, bringing the number to 540 college scholarships given in 14 years.

Around 125 guests attended the event, which was catered by Carrabba’s Italian Grill.

Kids to Love Founder and CEO Lee Marshall and her daughter Ella arranged flowers and décor. The event was presented by Breland Companies.

“Education is one of the foundations of our organization. Children in foster care come from poverty situations, and the only way out is through education. Our Kids to Love scholars just need a chance, and that’s what Kids to Love gives them, a hand up to get out,” said Marshall. n

Photos by Steve Babin The Huntsville Hospital Foundation’s Development Council hosted another successful Claws for a Cause event this summer, inviting guests to enjoy a night of crawfish and cornhole. This second annual event took place on June 2 at S.R. Butler Green at Campus 805. Claws for a Cause raised $15,000 for the Huntsville Hospital Neurological ICU, providing cardiac chairs and communication boards for the unit.

The new chairs will increase patient mobility, and the boards are essential tools in helping patients verbalize their needs and symptoms. The event was catered by New Orleans Lunchbox, with live music from Liquid Caravan. It is a tradition for each deb family to host a social during the summer to honor the girls.
