It’s school time once again and many of us have sent our little ones to their first day of school, first day of high school or away to college. Whatever the situation, it’s a daunting reality that we are one step closer to parting with our children for their independence. We hope and pray we have instilled character toward being productive and decent human beings who will help shape the world. For most of us, parenting is mixed bag of great times, heart aches and obstacles to overcome. But if we’ve done our jobs to the best of our abilities, hopefully we can experience our children blossoming into outstanding adults. I’m proud of our daughter, Lauren, who is maturing into a young woman that I truly admire.

With fall, comes not only football season, but the busy event season. There are so many worthwhile charitable events that need our time, attention and financial help. Please keep their plights in your hearts and help support the causes you can get behind. As our community grows, so do the needs of many around us.

Red Cross Gala Galvanizes Fundraising with Style

The North Alabama Chapter of the American Red Cross hosted their 13th Annual Gala at the Jackson Center on Saturday, June 4. Guests donned their formal best to attend the event that included cocktail hour, a seated dinner and both silent and live auctions. The evening was capped off with attendees dancing the night away.

Event sponsors were Crystal Mountain, Intuitive Research and Technology, Jerry Damson Honda/Acura, Landers McLarty of Huntsville and Redstone Federal Credit Union.

The mission of the Red Cross is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. When disasters happen, the Alabama Red Cross readily sends volunteers and resources regularly housed within the state to help with the relief efforts. n

Soles Dance Center Shakes the Ground with Annual Recital

The Soles Dance Center celebrated their 5th Annual Recital, entitled Shake the Ground on June 3 and 4 at the Von Braun Center Concert Hall. Owners Anna Tygielski Ward and Kelly Cooke Nave, plus teacher Emily Tygielski Davis, were excited to feature their “Soles” students in the much-anticipated event.

Soles Dance Center was established to bring to Huntsville a dance center that blends high quality dance training, a positive and encouraging atmosphere, and the right combination of creativity, technique, discipline, inspiration and fun. They offer a variety of classes from creative movement for the youngest dancers to classical ballet as well as jazz, tap, hip hop and more.

Around 135 guests gathered for the 9th annual fundraiser for the Twickenham Historic Preservation District Friday, June 10 at the home of Lindsey and Dr. Tom Wright.

Hors d’oeuvres and sweets catered by Ashley and Mary Lynn Carlton filled the dining room table, flanking a large bouquet of roses, lilies and summer flowers. Tables surrounding the pool were draped with green cloths and centered with summer flowers arranged by Randy Roper. The Wrights’ Colonial Revival home was built by A.M. Booth in 1912 on the site of the pre-Civil War School, The Huntsville Female Seminary. Many salvaged materials were used in the construction of the house after the seminary was demolished. A historical marker will soon be erected at the location.

Legend Inspires at Fundraiser Dinner

The Leaders & Legends Dinner hosted boxing legend Evander Holyfield at their 7th annual event on July 28 in the Von Braun Center’s North Hall. Around 900 guests came to support the fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Clubs.

Catered by the Von Braun Center, The Club Kids provided entertainment for diners.

“Every day, 11 million kids leave school with nowhere to go,” said Patrick Wynn, executive director of Boys & Girls Clubs of North Alabama, himself a product of the Boys & Girls Club. Funds raised at the Leaders & Legends dinner will benefit structured after-school programs that are geared toward education. According to Wynn, their organization hires teachers to reinforce the lessons being taught in school. These programs are proven to decrease the chance of juvenile-committed crime.

Huntsville native Dr. Beth Falkenberg, who serves as a radiation oncologist, joined The Center for Cancer Care after completing her residency in 2005. She and husband Mark have four children ranging in age from 4 to 14. She revealed her motivation to return to the area, “I love the people in Huntsville and North Alabama because this is home. Our family is here, and it is something special to have your children grow up near their grandparents.”

As October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, Dr. Falkenberg agreed to share her insight into breast cancer and its treatment, plus advice on the prevention of many types of cancer.

EVENT: Where did you go to school? BF: I was raised in Huntsville and attended Grissom High School. I graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Biochemistry and then attended the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham.

EVENT: What can I do to reduce my risk of breast and other cancers? BF: A woman’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is approximately 12%. The causes of cancer are not fully known but there are some factors we can control. Exercising is one of the best ways a woman can reduce the risk of breast cancer. Many studies have shown a risk-reduction benefit to exercise. In one large study, researchers in France compiled published data involving more than four million women around the world. They found that the more active a woman, the better her odds at avoiding a breast cancer diagnosis. The most recent article published this year in JAMA Internal Medicine included a reduction in the risk of 13 different types of cancer, even with moderate exercise. Women can also make healthy choices like keeping a healthy weight, limiting alcohol, and eating more fruits and vegetables. The number one way to significantly lower the risk of multiple types of cancer is to stop smoking.

EVENT: Am I taking a chance by having a lumpectomy rather than a mastectomy? BF: Absolutely not. Multiple randomized clinical trials with more than 25-30 years follow-up show no cancer survival advantage to having a mastectomy instead of a lumpectomy followed by radiation therapy. In fact, three recently published studies included thousands of women with early stage breast cancer and showed that lumpectomy with radiation is equal to mastectomy for long term cure and might even give an advantage in overall survival. Some women might not have the option of lumpectomy because of the extent of disease in the breast, but the majority of breast cancers are diagnosed early. A cancer diagnosis can be scary and an emotionally challenging time for the patient and her family. It is best for a woman with a new breast cancer diagnosis to take time to gather information about her treatment options, so she can make an informed decision and not a rushed decision based on fear.

EVENT: What do you like about Huntsville? BF: Huntsville is on the cutting edge of technology in multiple fields and continues to be one of the strongest economies in the state. Cummings Research Park includes a wide range of high-tech industries with companies in aerospace and defense, engineering and information technology, and nationally recognized medical and genomic research, Hudson Alpha. Huntsville also boasts the second largest hospital in the state and serves as a regional referral center for north Alabama and southern Tennessee. n Pictured with photographer and former patient Steve Babin holding the mask from his radiation therapy in 2014.

EVENT: With a breast cancer diagnosis, do I need surgery, chemo, or radiation? BF: Surgery is necessary in most every stage of breast cancer. Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and endocrine therapy might be needed depending on the stage and risk features of the cancer, not necessarily the type of surgery that was performed. More extensive surgery doesn’t always mean less chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Approximately 70% of breast cancers are sensitive to estrogen and therefore an estrogen blocker can be used as part of therapy. It is important to have a multi-disciplinary approach to treating breast cancer so that treatment can be individualized for each patient and tumor type. Ideally, women should meet with a surgeon, medical oncologist and radiation oncologist to discuss options prior to initiating treatment.

EVENT: What should I do if I feel a lump? BF: If a woman feels a lump or notices a change in her breast, she should see her gynecologist or primary care physician for a physical examination. Imaging studies can help decide if something is benign or potentially malignant. Most lumps in the breast are not cancerous. If the area is suspicious by imaging or clinical exam, a needle biopsy should be performed.

EVENT: How important is it for women to get a yearly mammogram and at what age should they begin? BF: The risk of breast cancer increases with age. Women at average risk should undergo physical examination and bilateral screening mammogram yearly beginning at age 40, according to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guidelines. Women should be familiar with their breasts and report changes to their health care provider. For women at increased risk because of family history or personal history of cancer, the proper screening guidelines should be discussed with their physician.

Debs & Presenters Prepare for Symphony Ball

On Thursday evening, May 19 at Huntsville Country Club, debutantes and their presenters attended a training seminar designed to enhance the beauty and pageantry of the formal presentation of the 2016 Symphony Ball, set for October 29, 2016.

Symphony Ball Chair Linda Akenhead welcomed the debs and presenters, after which announcement photos were taken by ball photographer Mark Jaeger. Event Chairs Pam Gann and Josie Craig organized the evening’s events.

It will change your life. Not taking anything personally is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, and it’s a work in progress every single day. Best quality? I know when to step out of the spotlight and recharge my batteries. I ran 90 to nothing, trying to please everyone, for years. It’s impossible, and it left me resentful and exhausted. I work hard to take time for me.

Favorite song? In Spite of Ourselves by John Prine and Iris Dement What was your first car? A 1970-something baby blue Monte Carlo with a Landau roof. Actor/director Gena Rawdon’s first foray into theatre was in 1994, and she’s been working with local theatre groups since. “Theatre is my church, to be perfectly honest. It is when I feel most vulnerable and happy and alive,” revealed Rawdon. Leaving the corporate world in 2009 to become a licensed massage therapist, she began teaching massage in 2012 and ultimately buying and operating the Madison School of Massage Therapy and Therapeutic Clinic.

The celebration of the grand opening of Legend Realty’s new location was an event of July 21. The agents, staff and guests gathered to celebrate the newly-constructed building at 3508 Memorial Parkway SW.

More than 1000 guests gathered for the occasion, including many corporate, government and chamber of commerce dignitaries. “Legend was honored to have had so many special guests join us for such a sentimental event,” said broker/owner Jim Hoekenschnieder. Catered by Bill Chapman and Mark Craig, the flowers and décor were arranged by In Bloom. Attendees were entertained by Alan Little and Grammy Award Winner Noel Webster.

Walker’s Market Kicks off Opening with a Bash

Walker’s Market hosted a grand opening party on June 6 at their location at 603 Pratt Avenue. Around 120 guests gathered to celebrate the store’s launch.

The event served as a soft opening to highlight a source for new and innovative gourmet foods and fresh entrees. Owner Kimberly Walker said, “It’s a place for people to stop in and pick up fresh pre-cooked meals.”

Guests enjoyed fare from Catering by Narvell, who is also a weekly vendor to the market.

The store is the first of its kind in Huntsville to highlight hand-crafted items made in small batches from vendors around the south. Each week, local caterers deliver fresh, fully-cooked entrees and sides for busy families and professionals to grab a fresh meal to eat at home. Along with Catering by Narvell, caterers are Chupper Time Catering and Carlton’s Catering. Walker added, “We are always bringing in new food products and gifts to Huntsville not found anywhere else.” n

Williams’ presentation topic was How to Make Your House and Garden Come Alive. The event featured media interviews and luncheon, followed by Williams’ presentation and a question and answer session.

The Ledges Hedged Their Bets for Fun

Now in its 16th year, The Ledges sold-out Member Guest Cliffhanger Golf Tournament held its annual Casino Party on Thursday, June 2. More than 200 attendees gathered to kick off what is recognized as North Alabama’s premier golf tournament.

Ledges members and their guests feasted on a lavish meal prepared by Chef Phillip Collier and The Ledges culinary team. Inside The Ledges Ballroom, guests spent the evening playing black jack, craps and roulette while other guests ventured outside to participate in the Night Putting Contest.

The Crayon Bash benefits Free 2 Teach, a nonprofit organization serving local public school teachers since 2013. Street Scene Chandelier Unveiling at HMA

In 2014, the Huntsville Museum of Art presented the exhibition of Ginny Ruffner, a pioneer in the fine-art application of lampworking. After raising more than its initial fundraising commitment through anniversary events, The Women’s Guild of the HMA donated the additional monies to the museum, enabling it to commission Ruffner to create a one-of-a-kind chandelier, which is located in the Richard and Roper Room and was unveiled and dedicated on July 14. n

Symphony Ball Debutante Tea

2016 Symphony Ball debutantes and their mothers enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea, Wednesday, May 18 at the home of guild member, Christine Wicks. Attending the event were the 35 young women who will make their debut at the 53rd Symphony Ball, October 29, with their mothers, members of the 2016 Ball Committee, past Guild Presidents and Chairmen, and the wives of the Ball advisors. n

Sigmatech, Inc. 30th Anniversary

Sigmatech, Inc. celebrated its 30th Anniversary at the Davidson Center on June 17, 2016. Dr. Gurmej Sandhu, Sigmatech’s Founder, and MG (R) Joe Bergantz, Sigmatech’s CEO/President, hosted the evening’s events, which included a scrumptious dinner buffet, door prizes for Sigmatech employees, and a live dance band. Over 200 people attended the event celebrating Sigmatech’s service to their government and civilian customers in the Huntsville area and around the world. n

HMA Hosts Preview Party for Two Views of Home

The Huntsville Museum of Art hosted a member’s private preview party for the opening of Two Views of Home on July 9. The exhibit features Homeland: Photographs by Barry M. Goldwater in conjunction with An American Romantic: the Art of Luigi Lucioni.

Homeland includes Senator Goldwater’s most iconic images of western landscapes and Native Americans. The exhibit features 22 black and white photographs, some of which have never been seen in the Southeast. “On a professional and personal note, I am happy to present Goldwater’s alluring photographs,” Christopher J. Madkour, the museum’s executive director, said.

An American Romantic will present approximately 50 oil paintings and etchings by Italian-born painter Luigi Lucioni (1900-1988), recognized today as one of the finest American Scene artists of the mid-20th century. Madkour added, “I’m especially looking forward to now sharing Lucioni’s tremendous talent and art with the South and residents of The Tennessee Valley.”
