Hello Huntsville! As I write this note, our long, hot summer is coming to an end.

Although the warm temperatures have been known overstay their welcome here in the south, the fall season is surely headed our way. Backyard grilling, fire pits, weekend camping and football will be on the agenda. I am hopeful for a longer season this year with an abundance of brilliant colors. If you haven’t been recently, I encourage you to take a train excursion at the North Alabama Railroad Museum to see the leaves changing colors. Over the summer we have been busy covering events to grace the pages of this issue. A Southern Summer Garden Party in Twickenham Historic District honored sophisticated southern traditions, while Susie’s Beach Fest raised funds for sending cancer patients to the serenity of waves crashing along sandy shores.

Big News at 29:11 Fiesta Fundraiser Photos by Steve Babin The Fiesta Fundraiser for 29:11 Inc. was more than just a party. With an announcement for the opening date of its first school, the organization has much to celebrate.

The fundraiser, held on June 25 at Cedarhurst Clubhouse was sponsored by Little Rosie’s, Downtown Living, Just for Women and Inside Huntsville. The event was organized by 29:11’s Director of Development and Administration, Lane Harris.

29:11 is a nonprofit organization with a mission to establish a private, Christ-centered school system which will provide at-risk children with a college preparatory education in a loving and safe environment. NBA will start with 3 and 4-year-old preschoolers.

Sue Robinette, a Kentucky native, is widely known as the “Silver Queen of the South.” However, she didn’t start her life with a silver spoon in her mouth. Rather, as the Lexington Herald-Leader put it, “She makes her living one spoon at a time.”

Sue and her husband, Richard Robinette, worked for the federal government in their first careers, for the Internal Revenue Service, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the U.S. Department of Labor. But a love for sterling and all things antique led Sue away from the confines of her desk job and out into the world to buy and sell silver. A self-taught expert, Sue can date and tell the origin of almost all sterling silver. She is a fascinating speaker with a wealth of knowledge that she loves to share.

She has been dealing in sterling silver for more than twenty years in the Huntsville area. The past thirteen have been spent at Railroad Station Antiques in Downtown Huntsville. With a large permanent collection there, she boasts some of the best prices in the area. She also holds numerous shows there each year, where she displays and sells pieces of her vast collection. For those looking for anything silver, or those who want to learn more about it, visiting one of her shows is a must. Not only is it loads of fun to sip a glass of wine while perusing all of the beautiful things, it is truly educational to speak with her. Talk to almost anyone, and they’ll gladly tell you, “Buying a car is one of the most stressful moments of my life.” A potential car buyer most often feels like they are wading into battle as they fend off aggressive salespeople, skyrocketing purchase prices and fine print clauses. The experience is rarely described as enjoyable.

Audi Huntsville would like to turn the negative vehicle purchase experience completely around, leaving potential customers not only satisfied and pleased, but feeling as though they have started a relationship with the company. General Manager Adam Limberg said, “Our dealership is a family-owned and operated business. We do sell high-line vehicles, but it’s a place where there is a family atmosphere with a premium customer experience.”

The new multi-million-dollar Audi dealership off Highway 72 was finished in May of this year, and the growth has been tremendous. In addition to a sleekly designed customer lounge (complete with Starbucks coffee, freshly-baked cookies, and high-definition television) and a state-of-the-art service department, the facility also boasts an inventory of over 120 vehicles on-site. “We now have three times the amount of cars at the dealership than we had at our previous location,” Limberg said.

Audi also prides itself on being very transparent as to what their buying options are.

Many of the financial lenders are on-site, and a credit application usually takes just minutes. “We’re a one-stop shop,” Limberg stressed. “When we’re going through our proposal, all of our numbers are on one sheet. We list the price of the car, the trade-in value, taxes – all the miscellaneous costs associated with a car purchase.”

When asked what it is about Audi Huntsville that makes it a cut above the rest, Limberg is quick to answer. “We’re passionate about the Audi brand, and we really care about the community of Huntsville. We want everyone to have a premium buying experience. Beach Fest Benefits Susie’s Wish Photos by Steve Babin Susie’s Beach Fest celebrated its 2nd annual event on June 25 at A.M. Booth’s Lumberyard. With several tons of sand creating a mini-beach in front of the stage, attendees could literally put their toes in the sand. Fare was available from two food trucks: Fire & Spice and Earth and Stone Wood-Fired Pizza, plus beach cocktails and tunes by CBDB. The fundraiser benefits Susie’s Wish. Founder and President, Georgina Chapman said, “Susie’s Wish is named in memory of Susie Edwards, a former WAFF 48 News reporter who died of cancer at the age of 34 before she was able to go on her final trip to the beach. The organization sends patients with life-threatening illnesses to the beach. Condos are donated along the Gulf Coast, and then we raise money to pay for travel and food. We hope to provide comfort and a special time for family and friends to spend with their loved ones.”

Outdoors, white cloths covered cocktail tables beneath twinkling lights. Vibrant roses arranged by Kris Clark stood in vases and golden urns. The Westin provided food and drinks.

A southern garden party was held June 25 at the Adams Street home and garden of Jean Templeton. More than 125 people enjoyed strolling the grounds and taking in the summer blooms. Floral displays were arranged by Randy Roper with zinnias and other seasonal flowers gracing the outdoor tables, which were covered in long cloths. The dining table featured another of Roper’s arrangements featuring summer blossoms, along with scrumptious fare catered by Mary Lynn and Ashley Carlton. The event was the 8th annual fundraiser for the Twickenham Historic Preservation District Association and benefits the Halsey Park, the Weeden House Museum and special needs of the Twickenham Historic District. n

Thrive Alabama hosted the 17th Annual Dining with Friends on Saturday, July 11 at The Westin at Bridge Street Town Centre. The Dining with Friends dessert reception was the finale to a season of smaller parties hosted by friends and supporters of the organization. Partygoers stepped back in time to the age of Old Hollywood glamour for the occasion. The event featured decadent desserts, savory appetizers, novelty casino-style games and a silent auction, all underscored by music from the 20’s 30’s and 40’s.

The first-time concert ended the three-day event that gave alumni a chance to relive their time at Space Camp and Aviation Challenge, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center’s military-based camp where trainees learn what it takes to be a jet fighter pilot. The weekend also included astronaut speakers and the Space Camp Hall of Fame Dinner and Induction Ceremony.

The concert was also open to the public and was sponsored by John Ramsey, Ben Chandler and Tangled String Studio. Singer-Songwriter Amy McCarley kicked off the music, followed by headliner The Yacht Rock Review, a 70’s tribute band who call themselves “The Greatest Show on Surf.” n

Crayon Bash Fundraiser Provides Supplies and Resources to Help Teachers

Free 2 Teach celebrated its 4th annual benefit event on July 17 at The Lumberyard.

The Crayon Bash is a fundraiser to provide free supplies and resources to all teachers in Huntsville City, Madison County, and Madison City schools.

Free 2 Teach Executive Director Eula Battle said, “We hope these supplies will enhance classroom instruction, as well as get into the hands of children who cannot afford school supplies.”

Each year the school supplies are available to more than 3,800 classroom teachers and their 52,000 students, improving the educational experience of children, and strengthening the community’s future workforce.

Catered by Ted’s BBQ and Nothing Bunt Cakes, attendees enjoyed entertainment by the dance band 2nd Coming. Tables were decorated by volunteer Bev Cordrey.

HEIRLOOM CARROT AND GINGER SOUP (Serves 8 people)

2 tbsp. whole butter 1 medium Vidalia onion 1 small clove of garlic 2 fresh bay leaves 1 tsp. salt and freshly ground pepper.

2 lbs. Chantenay carrots (any good sweet heirloom variety) 1 small piece of peeled fresh ginger (2 oz.)

6 cups vegetable stock (carrots, onions and celery) 1 cup heavy cream In a medium sauce pan over medium heat, sauté the roughly chopped vegetables in whole butter for five minutes. Add the vegetable stock, salt, pepper and bay leaf. Simmer for five minutes or until the carrots are tender. Puree and strain the mixture into another sauce pot and add the heavy cream. Bring to a light simmer and check seasoning. A few drops of lemon juice will help to bring out the flavor of the carrots. Serve with a dollop of sour cream, your favorite The Bottle crusty bread and Heirloom fresh herbs. Carrot and Ginger Soup 34

2.5 lbs. Ground Sirloin 3/8 cup Chili Spice 6 oz. diced Green Bell Pepper 1.5 oz. Beef Base 1.5 tbsp. Kosher Salt.

3.5 cups Bloody Mary Mix

D&L Bistro Asparagus Soup

1 bunch of asparagus 1 medium yellow onion 2 garlic cloves 1 large Yukon gold potato 1 quart chicken stock (vegetable stock may be used as a vegetarian option) 1/4 cup heavy cream 1 tbsp. canola oil 1/4 tsp allspice 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper salt and pepper to taste

1 lb. diced Yellow Onion 2 ea. deseeded and diced Jalapeno Pepper 1.5 tbsp. Chopped Garlic 1/2 of a large can Tomato Strips 3.25 cups Water

Brown the beef in steam kettle or large pot on medium high heat. Veggies may be prepped while the beef is browning. Once the beef is browned, drain the excess grease and return beef to pot. Add the next 8 ingredients and simmer until veggies are fork tender. Increase the heat, add remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Once at a boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring often to prevent sticking. Serve immediately or cool below 41 degrees rapidly. Enjoy the fruits of your labor!

ASPARAGUS SOUP

Combine all of the ingredients and purée in a blender. Heat the mixture in a pan and serve immediately. Garnish with asparagus tips and olive oil.

The Blount Hospitality House provides lodging and supportive companionship for out-of-town relatives of patients in Huntsville area hospitals – serving as a homeaway-from-home for families in need. Director Marydae Sneed, a Huntsville native, believes the little house on Madison Street turns hospital into hospitality!

EVENT: Tell about your work at Blount Hospitality House.

MS: Blount House was founded in 1980 when a group of women realized just how many people were sleeping in hospital waiting rooms, eating from vending machines and washing themselves and their clothes in public restroom sinks. Our guests find themselves miles from home with one thing in common; being unexpectedly in Huntsville due to a medical emergency. Some have babies in a neonatal unit, a family member in a terrible car accident, or are going through chemo or radiation themselves.

Blount House is a wonderful gift to these families, a mission of love that I take very seriously. We operate on a prayer and support from our great community. It’s my job, along with my board of directors, to make sure Blount Hospitality House is here for another 35 years.

EVENT: Why is nonprofit work so important to you?

MS: It is important to me to be in a position to better someone else’s life. For most of my adult life I filled that need through nonprofit work.The thank you notes we receive, almost daily, at Blount House, let me know just how important our mission is. Just this week, we had two previous guests drop by to let us know what a Godsend we were to their family. Through all the ups and downs and the trials of running a small nonprofit, on weeks like this, it’s a reminder of why we do what we do!

I wouldn’t trade it for the world!

EVENT: What events benefit Blount Hospitality House that the community can get involved in?

MS: We have three events that are dear to me! Kicking off our event season is Dinner in the Garden at Bennett Nurseries, which happens on October 1 this year, followed by the Rudolph Run on December 19. Then our Mardi Gras celebration will be February 7, 2016. Both the Rudolph Run and Mardi Gras require an army of volunteers.

EVENT: What kind of hobbies and interests to you have?

MS: We have been living on our family farm for the past year, just eight miles from the courthouse square. It began as a move to renovate our house in town, which is not moving as quickly we’d hoped, so hobbies and interests have shifted this year from working in my flower beds in town to cutting grass! I’ve enjoyed getting back into horseback riding at Flint Ridge Farm, where I took lessons as a child. I’m a member of The Junior League of Huntsville and its Rainbow Rhythm Band, a washboard band, where I may be found leading the band or playing the spoons! In addition, I am a sponsor of the Grace Club of Huntsville’s Junior Grace Club, a social and service club for high school students. Between the few additional activities and directing a small nonprofit, I have some precious time for my extremely supportive, long-time boyfriend, Ben, our dog Topper and kitty Maggie. Together, we enjoy long walks, traveling, cooking and entertaining! n

The New Mix 96.9’s John Malone started his broadcasting career here in the Tennessee Valley in the late 1970s. He has been an on-air radio personality, TV weatherman, news reporter, producer and manager. John earned three first place awards as the city’s Favorite Air Personality as selected by readers of The Huntsville Times, was honored by the Associated Press for outstanding spot news coverage, and received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2013 American Ad Fed North Alabama Addy Awards. During his time as Program Director of WSM in Nashville, John oversaw the iconic radio station’s 75th Anniversary culminating with a live 12 hour broadcast from the stage of the historic Ryman Auditorium.

EVENT: How did you get started in the radio business?

JM: I grew up in Fayetteville where the local radio station hired a couple of high schoolers to work part-time. I was 15 years old when I received my first professional assignment, color commentator on a high school baseball tournament. I did everything there: DJ, commercials, high school basketball games, whatever they would let me do.

EVENT: You wear a lot of hats at Mix 96.9 WRSA, including Morning DJ, Program Director and General Manager, tell us about your roles at the radio station: JM: Oh, it is definitely a balancing act! Fortunately I have a tremendous staff that does an exceptional job of serving our listeners, customers and the community. It makes my job so much easier. Since Mix 96.9 is still a family-owned radio station

I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.” we do things that make the most sense for our unique situation. That’s why most of us here have more than one job title. I started on the air in Huntsville in 1980 and this aspect of my career has always been a priority. The major radio companies have downsized their staff so much, there are very few local radio personalities left. That’s why it is so important for us to super-serve our community. There are definitely some long days but the rewards that come from our success make it all worthwhile.

EVENT: Why are local radio stations so important in the age of satellite radio?

JM: There is a misconception that satellite radio, Pandora, etc. has taken away listeners from broadcast radio. That is completely inaccurate. Data from Nielsen and other research companies continues to show that traditional radio actually has more listeners than ever. No one does a better job of serving local communities than their local radio station. And it has always been absolutely free!

EVENT: You also find time to be a husband and dad, tell us about the importance of making time for family amid your busy schedule: JM: It’s not easy. Both my wife and I work long hours. Our youngest son is a high school senior and the other two are away at college. Everyone is constantly on the move but family is a priority for us all. Sometimes it has to be through phone calls and text messages but we find ways to enjoy quality time together. Last year the five of us took a family trip to Jamaica for a week. We are all very social and outgoing, so there’s never a dull moment!

EVENT: What type of civic work are you currently involved in?

JM: Personally, I’m on the board of directors for Eula Battle’s organization Free 2 Teach, which provides resources for teachers and students in our three public systems in Madison County. I also serve on the board of the Alabama Broadcasters Association.

As a station, we are constantly involved in important community causes. For instance, in the last few years we’ve been heavily involved in the fight against breast cancer with our Lite It Up Pink campaign and sponsorship of the Liz Hurley Ribbon Run. I’m particularly proud of our work in saving the downtown Huntsville Christmas Parade last year. The previous sponsor withdrew and WRSA, along with the VBC, stepped in to coordinate and stage the Parade. Now we’re getting set for an even better nighttime Parade for 2015!

EVENT: What do you like about Huntsville?

JM: There is so much to love about Huntsville. The people. The culture. The smart and significant work that is done here. The quality of life. The amazing revitalization of downtown. We are big enough to have the amenities of a large city, yet still small enough to have a sense of community. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. n

Photos by Steve Babin The Huntsville Museum of Art opened Images of the Great War: The European Offensives, 1914-1916 on Sunday, August 8 by hosting a lecture by the curator of Brown University’s John Hay Library, Peter Harrington. The lecture was followed by a wine reception.

Comprised of 44 original artworks on paper, the works premiered last year at the Woodrow Wilson House in Washington, D.C. and will be on display in Huntsville through November 15. The exhibit is presented chronologically in three galleries, and HMA’s curatorial staff has supplemented it with original photography, film footage, and poetry from the era. “The images highlight the ending of one era and the beginning of the modern age,” said David Reyes, HMA’s curator of exhibition and collections. n

Warm fall days and cooler mornings and evenings are here! It’s football season, so I’ll be pulling for my favorite team (Roll Tide!) and enjoying the fantastic fall activities our community has to offer. The Scarecrow Trail at Huntsville Botanical Garden is a family favorite in September and October. Catch the butterflies at Purdy Butterfly House before they flutter off at the end of September. There’s always something growing on in the Garden!

There’s more than ever going on in downtown Huntsville. In addition to the Thursday Night Bike Night and Greene Street Market at Nativity weekly activities, fabulous events this fall include the Big Spring Crush Downtown Wine Festival, the International Festival of North Alabama and the Mercury Rising Chili Festival, all scheduled on September 26. Ghost walks and haunted trolley tours are held in Huntsville and Madison on Friday and/or Saturday evenings. Breakfast trolley tours are Saturday mornings from Alabama Constitution Village through September. Food truck rallies are every third Friday through October. Don’t miss the Images of the Great War exhibit at the Huntsville Museum of Art. The works represent powerful images of World War I. Two Saturdays in October, the CVB is offering free historic district walking tours at 10 a.m.: Five Points on October 3 and Old Town on October 10. The Maple Hill Cemetery Stroll is Sunday, October 18, 2:00 - 4:30 p.m. See actors in period costumes portraying former local residents, many of whom are buried in the cemetery. Look for CVB team member Van Brown in his magnificent portrayal of local bovine legend, Lily Flagg. There’s no admission charge, but donations are used to restore and refurbish historic markers and elements in the cemetery.

This promises to be an outstanding year for the Alabama A&M University Bulldogs.

They’ll host opponents University of Arkansas Pine Bluff on September 26 for their homecoming game, and Jackson State University on October 17. Mississippi Valley State visits on November 7. Plan to tailgate and cheer the Bulldogs to victory!

Music fills the air this fall with Concerts on the Dock at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment, Jam Session on the Square in downtown Huntsville and Blues with a View and the International Heritage Festival at Burritt on the Mountain. The Huntsville Symphony Orchestra starts another fantastic season in the Mark C. Smith Concert Hall at the Von Braun Center.

Join friends and neighbors on October 3 for the Madison Street Festival which draws thousands to historical downtown Madison for fun including a kids’ zone, live music, a car show and street performers.

The Huntsville/Madison County Hospitality Association holds Taste of Huntsville on October 15 at the Von Braun Center. Sample offerings from dozens of local restaurants and help some deserving charities at the same time. The Mad Scientist Bash at Sci-Quest is October 17.

Food, live music and fun are all part of the formula for this much-anticipated annual event.

The Biergarten at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center continues through October on Thursday evenings. Catch the latest traveling exhibit at the center, Science Fiction, Science Future, opening September 23. It’s a visually compelling exhibition enabling guests to see how science fiction concepts of today could become the science reality of tomorrow.

A group of 120 VIP guests gathered at Porsche of Huntsville on August 6 for the unveiling of Porsche's first ever million dollar super car, The 918 Spyder! This exotic looking, “environmentally friendly rocket” is reported to accelerate from 0 to 60 in an astonishing 2.6 seconds ad tops out at a dizzying 214 mph — and all with Hybrid technology.

The group enjoyed champagne, chocolate covered strawberries and light hors d'oeuvres provided by Lyn's Gracious Goodness before the unveiling. n

CASA of Madison County’s 4th Annual Night in the Garden presented by Huntsville Hospital was a tremendous success, with 30 sponsors and more than 300 in attendance. In just a few years, funds raised during the evening have increased by 400 percent, turning the event into CASA’s major fundraiser of the year.

Bancorp South Pet Foot Drive BancorpSouth’s 4th Annual Pet Food Drive was the most successful yet, bringing in more than more than 9,000 pounds of dog and cat food for King’s Community Kitchen, a program of the Greater Huntsville Humane Society (GHHS). During the month of June, local BancorpSouth branches collected 6,000 pounds in addition to a 3,000 pound corporate donation from Big Heart Pet Brands. GHHS is a special charity to BancorpSouth, according to Market President, Penny Billings. “At BancorpSouth, we are always looking for opportunities to help those in need in our community, and King’s Community Kitchen does just that.” said Billings. n

Midsummer Masquerade Ball Photos by Steve Babin Masked guests danced the night away on July 25 in the ballroom backdrop of the Huntsville Country Club. As part of a monthly event hosted by the Silvery Moon Band in partnership with local businesses and organizations, the Midsummer Masquerade Ball was open to the public. The evening offered entertainment for the ballroom and swing dance community in Huntsville and gave them an opportunity to dance in the historic Huntsville Country Club, which provided dinner and drinks.

The Silvery Moon Band played big band, jazz and swing favorites from Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Frank Sinatra, Count Basie, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Henry Mancini and more.

The band’s Anna Fergison said, “Everyone joined in the fun and dressed in their best costumes, and had a fantastic evening!” n
