Welcome to fall, Huntsville! I’m writing this letter on a hot August day, hoping for a little rain to offer some relief from the heat, although we all know that usually means even more humidity. It has certainly been one hot and wet summer. At times, Huntsville has felt more like South Florida, where a quick afternoon shower seems to leave things even hotter and more humid than before. But with school back in session and fall just around the corner, one of my favorite times of the year is about to begin. Huntsville’s event season will soon be in full swing, with people throughout our community coming together to support causes that are near and dear to them. The saying “It takes a village” certainly rings true in Huntsville. So many of the organizations we feature in EVENT rely heavily on the generosity and involvement of our local community to carry out their missions. Whether you attend an event, make a donation, volunteer your time or simply help spread the word, that support makes a difference. September also marks the beginning of nominations for our annual Best of Huntsville. Nominations will be open throughout the entire month, and I encourage you to take a few minutes to nominate the local businesses you believe deserve recognition. Your nominations determine which businesses will move on to the voting round in November, so make sure your favorites are represented! Finally, as you enjoy this issue, please take notice of the businesses you see within these pages. Their support allows us to continue doing what we love, sharing the people, events and stories that make Huntsville such a special place to live, work and play.

2026 Crescen-Dough Auction Hosted by the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guild, the 53rd Annual Crescen-Dough Auction was held on April 17 at VBC’s Saturn Hall. This year’s theme was Down in the Jungle Room. The widely promoted event provides direct support to the Guild’s mission to foster and promote musical knowledge and appreciation through education and outreach. Women Honoring Women Honorees Announced The WEDC Foundation hosted a reception to announce the 2026 Women Honoring Women (WHW) Honorees at Redstone Federal Credit Union Twickenham. HMA Guild’s UNFRAMED The Huntsville Museum of Art Guild presented UNFRAMED: Off to the Races, its premier Derby-themed fundraiser on May 2 at The Royal at Stovehouse. The Rosé Society hosted the 7th annual Rosé Ball on April 18 at Stovehouse. The Rosé Ball raised $118,500 to benefit area charities: Grandparents as Parents, National Coalition of 100 Black Women - Greater Huntsville Area Chapter, and the Liberty Learning Foundation. The Rosé Society is a group of women who are dedicated to raising money and awareness for local nonprofits that benefit North Alabama’s women and children. Guests danced the night away with good friends while supporting North Alabama nonprofits. Book Ball Supports Junior League Programs The 8th Annual Book Ball was an exciting and fun evening in space hosted at the U.S Space and Rocket Center. The event featured dinner, drinks, dancing, games and a highly anticipated silent auction. By attending the Book Ball, guests contributed to a cause that reaches beyond the evening’s festivities. Jazz in the City Celebrates Drake State’s 65th Anniversary The Drake State Foundation’s 5th Annual Jazz in the City was at Mars Music Hall at the Von Braun Center on June 19, headlined by the legendary AJ Ghent and his Singing Guitar along with performances by Ryon Schultz and Nina Marie Live. This event featured an unforgettable evening of live jazz, great company, and real impact for Drake State students. r. Ed Nichols is the recently appointed Chief Operating Officer at Leadership Greater Huntsville. He brings decades of experience in education, consulting and civic engagement to the role.

Would you like to talk about your family? I am blessed with a wonderful family that has been incredibly supportive throughout my professional journey.

Tell our readers about your hometown and background. I was born in Anchorage, Alaska, at Elmendorf Air Force Base, but I grew up in the small town of Maryville, Tenn. I was blessed to attend a wonderful school system and was very active in music, participating in band, chorus, and drama. I later attended the University of Tennessee, where I served as Drum Major of the Tennessee Band for five years.

My wife, Miranda, is a Relationship Manager with First National Bank in Madison. She is also very active in our community. She serves on the Huntsville Museum of Art Guild, the Huntsville Symphony Guild, and the WEDC, and she is an ambassador for both the Madison Chamber of Commerce and the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber.

What professional trajectory led you to your current position at Leadership Greater Huntsville? I began my career as a band director and later earned my Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Alabama. Over a 25-year career in education administration, I served as a principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent. In 2016, I left education and joined Decatur Morgan Hospital while also developing my own consulting firm, Enspire Consulting. For the next four years, I developed strategic plans and led leadership training for economic development teams, businesses, and educational organizations. In 2020, I returned to education as the Superintendent of Madison City Schools. These diverse professional experiences have provided me with a broad understanding of both education and business and have prepared me well to support the mission of Leadership Greater Huntsville.

Our daughter, Meredith, is a graduate of Samford University and is in her final year of graduate school there, where she is studying Speech-Language Pathology. She is also very active in Young Life ministry in the greater Birmingham area. What is your favorite part about living and working in the Huntsville/Madison County area? I love living in Madison and serving the Huntsville/Madison County community. There are so many entertainment and recreational opportunities that provide a fabulous quality of life. I am also blessed to serve our community on the Huntsville Symphony Board, the Madison City Rotary Board, and the Main Street Madison Board. Giving my time and talents to help improve our community is very important to me. I am grateful for the opportunity to live, work, and serve in such a wonderful community. n

What goals do you have for the organization? Leadership Greater Huntsville has a tremendous 40-year history of developing and serving leaders throughout our community. We also have a fabulous team led by our CEO, Christie Finley. My goal is to assist our CEO and Board in expanding opportunities for leadership development throughout the greater Huntsville area. I look forward to bringing my experience as a leadership trainer to area businesses and organizations while also assisting them with strategic planning. Our goal for LGH is to continue providing our traditional leadership programs while expanding our offerings to include customized leadership training and development opportunities for organizations throughout our region.

10th Annual Von Brewski Festival The 10th Annual Von Brewski Beer Festival returned to the Von Braun Center’s South Hall on May 2, 2026, celebrating a decade of craft beer, community and fun. Top 40 Under 40 Reception The 4th annual event celebrating the young professionals who make up Huntsville Business Journal’s Top 40 Under 40 was on June 24 at the Electric Belle. aving lived in a lot of places growing up, sommelier Dan Thompson was lucky to have been exposed to a wide variety of multicultural cuisine. Working primarily in the restaurant industry he has had an array of great interactions from washing dishes to managing award winning wine programs. His interests have been quite varied from being a wild touring musician to now a father of two incredible children. What drew you to wine and to becoming a sommelier? Wine has a special place in the context of human history. The interconnectivity between geology, geography, history, culture, and ritual are summed up by the French term “terroir.” Having no English equivalent, it can be described as the overall “somewhereness” expressed by the vine. What factors do you consider when recommending a wine to someone? The most important consideration is understanding what they enjoy. Palates change over time and are seasonal. Budget and food pairings

are also important factors. There are no distinct right or wrong answers to these questions. Things like sweetness or acidity are generally the deciding guidelines. What’s the biggest misconception people have about wine/ wine tasting? The biggest misconception is that it’s always fancy. Wine is meant to be accessible. It’s simply spoiled grape juice. Given, there is distinction between an $8 bottle and a $300 bottle, most of that comes down to reputation. The best wine tasters are the least snobby. If you could choose only one wine for the rest of your life, what would it be and why? That’s a really common and difficult question, but, twist my arm and I’ll say either 2008 Domaine Serene Evenstad Pinot Noir out of Willamette Valley, Oregon or G.H. Mumm’s Cordon Rouge Champagne. I can’t decide between the two. n

Voices of Our Times: A New York Evening The Huntsville Museum of Art presented Voices of Our Times: A New York Evening on June 4. The annual series that began in 2012 brings people of note from the arts, academia, publishing, politics and more to the museum. Special guests included 2026 Miss America Cassie Donegan; Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle and Jo Lynn Burks, the lead performer of the evening.
