I write this note with the knowledge of the recent passing of a friend. I cannot help but realize the anguish and loss that his family and closest friends will experience in the coming days. It is especially true during the holidays, that our missing loved ones leave a noticeable void within us. The loss of family or friends tends to shape our outlook and the world around us. Over these past eight years since I’ve moved back home, the number of funerals I’ve attended has sharply risen. Maybe that is just a part of aging. As life’s journey grows shorter for us, so does everyone else’s. And so we must keep our friends and loved ones close. The promise of tomorrow is not for any of us.

I am thankful for the team that has produced this issue and am fortunate to be surrounded by such talented individuals that are truly passionate about their work. They have done an outstanding job in expanding on food and fashion as well as highlighting the events that have taken place in the past two months.

I hope you too find these editorials entertaining and educational. With school back in session, the events of fall have been in full swing. We have covered events from The Parrots of the Caribbean, the American Cancer Society’s A Summer Lights Celebration to SciQuest’s Mad Scientist Bash capturing photos of friends, neighbors and strangers alike.

The holidays are upon us! While the anticipation builds toward the joy of the season, so can the stress. The shopping, the cooking and the entertaining can overwhelm us, even as we try to remember to cherish each moment.

American Cancer Society’s “A Summer Lights Celebration Gala”

Photos by Amanda Kemp The American Cancer Society’s “A Summer Lights Celebration Gala” commenced its 11th year as a premier Huntsville event, with an evening of fun and philanthropy all to raise funds in the fight against cancer. In honor of cancer survivors Ray Baker, Patsy Shields and Mike Wicks, over 600 guests came together for an expansive silent auction. This amazing evening included a live auction filled with extravagant dinners, luxurious vacations and fine jewelry. In addition attendees were able witness moving tributes and speeches from the honorees.

“We at ACS are so grateful to our honorees and sponsors for the commitment they have shown to this event,” offered Jessica Luther, Development Manager for Distinguished Events at the American Cancer Society (ACS). “It was a huge success and true testament to the resilience of cancer patients and survivors to hear the honorees’ stories.”

Tables topped in Tiffany blue and adorned with beautiful flowers filled the far end of the Von Braun Center North. Photos by Steve Babin The Huntsville Botanical Garden’s 3rd annual fundraiser, Fresh from the Garden was an event of September 11 in the Four Seasons Garden.

Guests strolled through the Garden and dined under the stars with the freshest seasonal finds for a mouth-watering menu prepared by Chef James Boyce. The family-style meal was served among décor arranged by the Fresh from the Garden Committee.

Mike Ball provided music for the evening. Guests were encouraged to “leave their heels at home” and don garden-casual attire for a relaxed, yet refined experience.

Spotlight As the executive director of Therapy Partners, a program that uses pet and owner teams as therapeutic tools for organizations throughout the Huntsville area, Anne Sentell’s work runs the gamut from helping children achieve literacy, to helping adults achieve better health, to helping provide comfort to Hospice patients. The common theme? Helping.

EVENT: Tell us about your work at Therapy Partners.

AS: I am the executive director at Therapy Partners and lead therapy partners representative.

I give presentations – often with one of my two therapy dogs. Hannah Kate, a Golden Retriever and Weezy, a GoldenDoodle, steal the show every single time. I also promote Therapy Partners in the community in an effort to expand our services – all of which are free.

Other duties include being one of the five lead instructors for our dog training school, Kind Hearts Behavior Center. Kind Hearts income supports Therapy Partners. The school is for companion and therapy dogs. I mentor existing Therapy Partners teams.

I am lead instructor for incoming Therapy Partners teams as well as coordinating all Therapy Partners activities and services to the community. I write grants seeking funding to support our programs.

I am also the lead for all of our programs: PAL is Partners Achieving Literacy in which Huntsville City Schools Title 1 second- and fourth-grade students who have been identified as poor readers practice reading to the dog or cat, the animal’s handler and the Therapy Partners-trained Book Buddy. PAW is Partners Achieving Wellness in which teams visit at various hospitals, hospice, assisted and nursing care facilities and youth programs. PIC is Partners in the Community which serves special events for memorial and fundraising purposes. WAGS is Wait/Ask/Greet/Safely, a dog bite prevention program. RRT stands for Rapid Response Teams that are on the ready to serve the community following a disaster as people begin to put their lives back together. PSC is Partners Serving Children, which has programs in the works for Farley Boys and Girls Club and Girls, Inc. Additional services will also be provided to the Nova Academy students and children at the Mountain Lakes Behavior Center in Scottsboro. PSM is Partners Serving Military. Therapy Partners is partnered with the North Alabama Veterans and Fraternal Organizations and the American Red Cross that serves the military and veterans. PSH is Partners Serving Hospice that provides teams to visit Hospice Family Care’s patients in their homes and in nursing facilities.

Teams also visit children and adults who are in various stages of grief following the loss of a loved one.

AS: I’m sort of both native and transplant. I was born and grew up in Mobile, lived in the Orlando area from 1966-1978, then moved to Huntsville. This is home.

EVENT: What is your education background?

AS: I received a bachelor’s degree in English and Sociology from Judson College in Marion, AL. My advanced studies in Education Administration were at the University of Florida.

Other studies include dog training: Registered Association of Pet Dog Trainers, and also Registered Pet Partners Team, Certified Therapy Partners Team, currently with two therapy dogs.

I also have formal training in tap, point, ballet and ballroom, specializing in percussive dance.

EVENT: What are your goals?

AS: My goals for Therapy Partners are to further establish Therapy Partners in our community; to grow Therapy Partners by providing excellent service to the community and training for new teams at our dog school; to provide education to the community about canines to enhance the bond dog-owners can enjoy with their pets and also to train everyone what to do if a dog is threatening or frightening them; to help our teams provide peace and joy – calm in troubled times – a listening ear – a welcomed dog or cat visitor in good and bad times; and to further our students’ education at Kind Hearts Behavior Center to include tried-and-true and also innovative methods to train and enjoy dogs in our homes and environment.

My personal goals are to strive to be a strong yet compassionate leader for Therapy Partners; enjoy my family of three children with spouses plus five grandchildren (in Huntsville, Charlottesville, VA and Amsterdam, Holland) and to forever be a mama, friend, student and community servant.

EVENT: What types of hobbies or interests do you have?

AS: I have been a percussive dance instructor and choreographer since 1980. I have danced at the World’s Fair in New Orleans, Dollywood, Six Flags over GA and the Grand Old Opry. I am a year-round Burritt volunteer and the resident clogging instructor. My students and I perform at Santa’s Village, and Burritt on the Mountain’s International Harvest Festival & Candlelight Christmas. My other interests include kayaking, biking, reading, stitching and traveling. Amsterdam and Virginia are entirely too far away for this mama and “Annie,” (my grandmother name.) n

Photos by Amanda Kemp A long-standing tradition of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guild continued as Symphony Ball Chairwoman, Nancy Colin named her ball advisors for this year. She hosted the men and their wives at an end-of-summer social at the home of Jay and Dana Town. A select group of the community’s distinguished men in positions of civic leadership are chosen annually to provide business and financial advice to the ball chair and support the event.

A large silver stand filled with whole fresh fruits decorated the center of the dining room table. Cocktail food, provided by Ina Rosa of Chef on Call, included an assortment of scrumptious hors d’oeuvres and desserts.

The Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guild established the Symphony Ball as a major fundraiser for the orchestra in 1964. The 52nd Symphony Ball will be October 24 in the Von Braun Center North Hall. n continued on page 40

The Kimberly Fails Jones Memorial Foundation celebrated breast cancer survivors on October 17 at the Huntsville Marriot. This year’s event marked the 5th annual fundraiser for the nonprofit organization.

The stunning floral arrangements and décor were enjoyed, thanks to Elite Creations.

This celebration was catered by the Marriot and the entertainment was provided by 318 productions’ Gloria Betts Caldwell. The mistress of ceremonies was Toni Terrell, Your Best Girlfriend, from 94.1 Radio.

Special guest speaker and former breast cancer survivor Karen O. Allen serves as a mentor and inspiration to all. Her heart felt book “Confronting Cancer with Faith” offers encouragement, comfort and hope. Other special guests included Dwight Pope, Huntsville’s Art N Soul Gentlemen, and the CEO of Men of Distinction, Kesia Wynn.

Numerous sponsors gave support to the fundraiser. Proceeds from the event provide moral support, encouragement and financial assistance for need-based and referred clients with breast cancer. Since its inception in 2011, the foundation has provided more than $25,000 in financial assistance to clients. n

The Rotary Club of Madison celebrated their 13th annual fundraiser, Parrots of the Caribbean on August 22. Held at Insanity Skate Park, almost 500 attended. Guests grooved to tunes by The Zooks and Four on the Floor and munched on fare by Curbside Grill by Summer Fun. Oscar the Parrot was an honored guest.

The event is the major fundraiser for the many activities and causes the group supports, including Thanksgiving baskets, Triana Boys and Girls Clubs and Career Development Center, children’s school supplies, Madison Hospital, Madison City programs: public library, senior center and YMCA; Madison Street Festival, Madison City Employees of the Year and Veteran of the Year, Wounded Warrior Program, Honduras Ecostove Project, scholarships and global polio eradication.

The holiday season is here! The chill in the air brings fantastic family-friendly activities.

Even before Thanksgiving, there are so many great events. The Galaxy of Lights at the Huntsville Botanical Garden starts walk-through nights November 13-16 and 20-24. Two nights, November 16 and 23 are designated as dog walking nights. The driving nights run Thanksgiving night through January 2, except for November 30 and December 1 for the Galaxy Run. Santa’s Village at Alabama Constitution Village is a definite family favorite, open nightly from November 27 through December 23. Visitors of all ages will delight in visiting Santa and Mrs. Claus’ home, reindeer in their stable and elves working to create special memories for you and your family in the village Santa calls home!

Other popular activities in downtown Huntsville include performances of A Christmas Carol and The Nutcracker at the Von Braun Center. The Rocket City Marathon will bring runners from around the world to Huntsville on December 12. Show your support and cheer for the UAH Chargers hockey team and the Huntsville Havoc as they skate to victory on their home ice at the VBC. You can hit the ice yourself and enjoy Skating in the Park next to the Huntsville Museum of Art in Big Spring Park. Outdoor skating starts on November 20 and continues until January 3. Stop in at the museum to enjoy “The Tsars Cabinet, Two Hundred Years of Russian Decorative Arts under the Romanovs” and “Blow Up: Inflatable Contemporary Art.” Check out the Tinsel Trail which will once again be in both sections of Big Spring Park this year.

The Huntsville Christmas Parade will start at 6 pm on December 17.

The Spirit of Christmas Past Homes Tour and Luminaries on December 12 is a must-see.

The Twickenham Historic District comes alive with decorations and luminaries to celebrate the season. Stop in at Harrison Brothers Hardware Store on the Square. For other unique shopping opportunities, try the gift shops in local attractions as well as the Visitor Center. If you haven’t visited Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment lately, you’re definitely missing out on great places to find special gifts.

The Town of Gurley will have a Christmas Parade at 10 am Saturday, December 12, and the City of Madison will kick off their parade later the same day at 5:30 p.m. Bundle up and grab your chairs to enjoy these yuletide processions.

Huntsville’s first museum, Burritt on the Mountain, is the perfect setting for activities including favorites Kris Kringle’s Candlelight Christmas, Holiday Magic and the always popular Sanders Family Christmas play. Take in the panoramic views while you’re there.

Check out the fantastic traveling exhibit Science Fiction, Science Future at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. The exhibit engages visitors with exciting hands-on and full-body experiences.

The Bottle Pours a Little French Flavor on Downtown Huntsville BUSINESS PROFILE

The two specialize in French cooking. “All French people are not good cooks, but there is a reason why the French are so good at cooking,” Chef McDonald said.

“They use a sensible technique and minimalist approach so as not to overpower the flavor of food, and it works on everything from fish to steaks and chicken. Naturally, The Bottle menus and wines have a French flavor.”

Menus that change daily, superior service, pairing wines, and a minimalist approach void of heavy sauces, are part of the French persuasion. “California wines have had a tremendous influence on exposing Americans to a complete dining experience inherent to French cooking,” Chef McDonald explained.

McDonald’s love for deep-sea fishing has inspired some extraordinary seafood dishes. One of them is Hunan-style Lionfish. The colorful, spikey fish popular in salt water aquariums are taking over coral reefs in the Florida Keys.

C

ustomers recall meeting their wives or husbands for the first time over a delicious meal and cocktails with friends. Others remember celebrating new business ventures or watching sporting events over a cold beer and specialty pizza in the courtyard.

Chef Chris McDonald and Chef Andy Howery were part of the original Humphrey’s Bar & Grill on Washington Street back in 2001 when downtown Huntsville was a restless center of unleashed potential.

Since then, the chefs have separately shared their expertise with the award-winning Grille 29, Sazio and Starfish, Pauli’s Chop House and Market Street Café. Going on three years ago, they purchased Humphrey’s from the past owners and as luck had it, the empty corner location next door was available too. They created a sister restaurant adjacent to Humphrey’s and named the new addition La Bouteille – The Bottle and it is now one of Huntsville’s most unique fine dining experiences, surrounded by a revitalized Downtown Huntsville.

The chefs bring exceptional culinary prowess and big-city creativity to Huntsville dining. McDonald’s resume includes New York City’s famous Tavern on the Green and 4-Star seafood restaurant, Le Bernardin. Leaving New York in 1992 to open a restaurant in Atlanta, he met “the greatest omelet cook ever” according to the Las Vegas Flamingo Hilton. Chef Howery had moved to Atlanta where he was mastering his technique at Atlanta’s Brasseri LeCoze.

“I enjoy catching seafood and preparing it. Fishing for grouper and snapper taught me a lot about what fresh fish looks like,” McDonald explained. “Freshness means everything and you can tell how fresh it is by the eyes and gills. We buy only whole fish and filet it ourselves using the bones for stock.”

The Bottle and Humphrey’s are part of Washington Square Catering who has a food truck participating in the popular food truck rallies around Huntsville. The Bottle has four private upstairs dining rooms, perfect for intimate holiday parties. With Humphrey’s next door, the courtyard is available for larger groups.

The Bottle holds wine dinners once a month. The customized menu pairs wines with special dishes so guests get a good balance of both in a comfortable atmosphere.

“We invite someone to talk about the wine and reassure diners that the cherry, grapefruit or tobacco flavor they think are experiencing is truly what they taste,” said Chef McDonald.

This season, we present two guilty pleasures that are well worth the extra calories in pure decadence. Try your hand at Cantina Laredo’s chocolate mole or The Bottle’s White Chocolate Mousse. Whether you’re feeding your family or cooking for a crowd, these are sure to please palates!

Cantina Laredo oaxaCa MoLe 1/3 cup dark raisins 3 Chiles Ancho, remove stem & seeds 10 Chiles Pasilla, remove stem & seeds 1 Chiles Guajillo, remove stem & seeds 1/2 pound tomatillos, husk removed, cut into chunks 3/4 pound tomatoes, cut into chunks 1 1/2 slices Texas toast cut into ¾ inch slices 2 corn tortillas cut into ¾” strips 1/4 cup + 2 tbsp peanuts, dry roasted, not salted 1 tbsp + 1 tsp sesame seeds 3 tbsp chicken bouillon base 1 tbsp Cumin 1 1/4 tsp salt 1 1/4 tsp garlic granulated 1/2 tsp cinnamon ground 1/4 tsp thyme 7 1/2 cups water 3 oz lard 5 1/4 oz Mexican chocolate bars (Ibarra, Abuelita)

Cantina Laredo Oaxaca Mole

• Gather and process all ingredients before beginning the recipe • Place lard into skillet and place over medium high heat, place raisins into hot skillet and fry for 8 to 12 seconds, it will inflate, remove from skillet and place at side pan • Place ancho, pasilla and guajillo in skillet in small amounts and fry for a minute or until color changes, remove and place in pan with raisins • Carefully place tomatillos and tomatoes chunks in skillet and fry for about 1 1/2 minutes, remove tomatoes and place in separate pan • Place Texas toast strips in the skillet and 1 1/2 minutes or until toasted

Note: add a little more lard if needed • Place tortillas in skillet and fry until crispy, remove and place in pan with raisins • Place peanuts in skillet and cook until they are light brown, remove and place in pan with raisins • Place sesame seeds in skillet and toast until light brown, remove and place in pan with raisins • Mix chicken bouillon base, cumin, salt, garlic, cinnamon and thyme in a small bowl • Measure 7 1/2 cups of water and set beside the blender • Fill a blender cup 3/4 full of the dry ingredients from the raisins pan, crush the ingredients in your hands as you add them to the blender cup. Add 2 1/2 cups of water to blender cup. Blend until smooth. Pour into a saucepan • Continue until all dry ingredients have been blended smooth with water

Note: All ingredients must be blended smooth without lumps.

• Place tomatoes and tomatillos into blender cup and blend until completely smooth and add to saucepan with other blended ingredients • After blending ingredients, add the spices mixed from the bowl and the chocolate • Place sauce pan over medium high flame and bring to a boil. Stir constantly until the chocolate dissolves • Lower the flame and simmer for 7 to 10 minutes or until sauce becomes thick and dark in color • Remove from heat and set aside. Mole is ready to be served

Yield Approximate: 1/2 Gallon + 3 Cups Volume 60

Whi te ChoCoLate Mousse 1/2 cup Heavy Cream 1/2 pound White Chocolate 1/4 teaspoon Vanilla Extract 1 cup Heavy Cream • Cut white chocolate into pieces or use chocolate chips and place in a medium sized bowl.

• Bring the 1/2 cup of heavy cream and vanilla extract to a boil over medium high heat.

• Pour this mixture over the white chocolate pieces/chips in the bowl and stir until the chocolate is thoroughly melted and incorporated.

• Whip the remaining 1 cup of heavy cream to soft peaks.

• Gradually, fold the whipped cream into the white chocolate, ensuring it is completely mixed in.

• Allow the mixture to set up in the refrigerator.

Yields 4 portions.

The Cosmopolitan Club of Huntsville rolled the dice with an evening of fun and philanthropy on Saturday, October 3 at the Valley Hill Country Club to benefit The Huntsville Inner City Learning Center.

The space was decorated casino-style including giant dice and face cards by a committee led by Chairman Lynn Shanks. Heavy hors d’oeuvres were catered by Valley Hill Country Club. Publicity Chair JoAnna James was delighted with the evening, “We had 200 in attendance to raise funds for this wonderful cause.” A check will be presented to the learning center at the Cosmopolitan Club’s Christmas luncheon.

The Huntsville Inner City Learning Center is a nonprofit organization committed to providing at-risk children in the Huntsville area with extracurricular support to succeed in school, build meaningful lives and careers while becoming socially responsible members of society. They provide tutoring, mentoring, Bible classes, life skills, exercise and meals outside of school and on weekends. n

Street Scene Lexus of Huntsville Hosts Business After Hours Lexus of Huntsville hosted a business after hours event on September 17, in conjunction with the chamber of commerce of Huntsville/Madison County.

The Lexus crew welcomed guests and promoted their new models, the 2016 Lexus ES350 and RX350. Guests enjoyed fare catered by Chef on Call’s Chef Ina Rosa with sound and lighting from Matt Stearns at Party Pros. n

Southern Style Book Signing Accents of the South was thrilled to have the beautiful home of Connie and Rusty Stephenson featured in Southern Lady's new lovely hard back book, “Southern Style.” On August 18th a book signing event was held to celebrate. Andrea Fanning, editor of Southern Lady Magazine joined Beverly Farrington and the Stephensons in signing copies of the book. It was a great turn out and cocktails and hors d’oeuvres were enjoyed by all. n

Ellena Smith, owner of LeJeune House of Fashion has changed the fashion scene in Huntsville since her arrival from Birmingham over twenty years ago. Not only has Ellena established the Alabama Fashion Alliance but she is responsible for the much anticipated Fashion Week Alabama. As a direct result of her vision, the city of Huntsville is able to enjoy fashion shows, fun-filled events and network with local fashion-minded business owners. Ellena’s passion touches lives and motivates individuals to achieve their dreams.

EVENT: What brought you to Huntsville?

ES: I am originally from Birmingham but I moved to Huntsville to start a life with my husband and build a career. One of the elements I like the most about Huntsville is the cultural influence here. This thriving city is populated with people from all around the world, yet it has small town charm. The sense of community is very strong here which made it easy to envision my fashion dream.

EVENT: When did your passion for clothing design and fashion begin?

ES: At the age of 12, I can remember taking a strong interest in the design of clothing. As a result, I began making outfits for Barbie dolls which I sold for a quarter. My Aunt Eula gave me a little Sears & Roebuck sewing machine that I learned to use. I made patterns by drawing shapes of clothing on paper. In college I designed and sold a line of blouses created out of pieces of fabric donated by my best friend’s mother. I received a great amount of positive feedback and the passion began to grow and take on a life of its own.

EVENT: Since you moved to Huntsville how have you been involved in clothing design?

ES: Knowing that the blouses I designed were so well-embraced in Birmingham, I made the choice to share my designs with the women of Huntsville. This process began with opening my own design studio and boutique, designing and selling my line with local upscale clothing stores. Initially I designed clothing on a part-time basis which included displaying my line at trunk shows or showcasing them at local events.Then about four years ago I decided to try my wings as a fashion designer full-time.

EVENT: How did you make your dream of Fashion Week Alabama a reality?

ES: I began to develop thoughts of how to bring fashion to the city of Huntsville after attending Fashion Week in Nashville, Tenn. and Charleston, S.C. I realized that I could take the same fashion element, bring it to this community and eventually statewide. I began building a committee for the Alabama Fashion Alliance that would later set the stage for Fashion Week Alabama.

EVENT: How have you worked with local business owners to map out your vision?

ES: Over the years I have tried to align myself with other business owners in an effort to carve out a marketing platform. I wanted to establish a foundation

When you bring a new driving force to a community, it is crucial to have others share the same vision, that local professionals work together and support one another. After I established the Fashion Alliance I worked with local business owners to plan and orchestrate Huntsville’s first Fashion Week in 2011.

EVENT: What are the standouts that distinguish your clothing line from others?

ES: I began designing clothing based on what I personally liked. My perspective changed when I became a mother and had to juggle a full-time work schedule. I feel it is very important for every female to carve out a certain time daily to do something enjoyable. This is important because some people get entrenched with the daily rigors of life and a busy schedule. This has been an ongoing motivation for my clothing line. I am inspired to design key pieces that can be integrated or removed to suit the need of any woman. I also have a huge inspiration for vintage and Asian influences.

EVENT: What is your involvement in Ladies Night Out Downtown?

ES: I started this event to bring women out for fun and fashion. During these nights I showcase a particular collection and relate it to life. One of my motivations for the event was titled Skirting the Issue. I pair my skirt designs with tops made from another local designer to show the interchangeability of the pieces and how they can work in any wardrobe. There is always a message behind each look and how it can

relate to anyone, so it is much more than just a night out on the town.

EVENT: What other areas of the community are you involved in?

ES: I established a special event several years ago for women that have survived breast cancer. This event, Designers Against Breast Cancer raised over $11,000 for the American Cancer Society. As a result, I became the director for the Huntsville Council of Fashion Designers. Each year I come up with ideas to support other charitable organizations. In addition I teach sewing classes while serving as a mentor for aspiring designers searching for their niche in clothing design. I want my story to inspire anyone looking to achieve a goal. n

The Sci-Quest Science Center was transformed into a laboratory for the 7th annual Mad Scientist Bash on October 17. The event, a fundraiser to benefit Sci-Quest, electrified guests with a digital light show by LED-Orange, catering by New Orleans Lunch Box, drinks from Yellowhammer Brewing and Prichard’s Distillery as well as live music from The Crackerjacks.

Throughout the evening, guests bid on silent auction items including fine jewelry, entertainment tickets, gift baskets, restaurant dinners and original artwork by local artists. HudsonAlpha welcomed their new Genomic Medicine Team with a party at the home of Susan and Bruce Park on September 17. This group of new scientists and physicians recently came to HudsonAlpha from the Medical College of Wisconsin.

HudsonAlpha is known as a world leader in genomic research. Now, they are opening the world's first clinic solely for the practice of genomic medicine. The Genomic Medicine Team will lead the clinic's mission to make a difference for the millions of people across the country impacted by genetic disease.

Sports, BBQ and Burpees? Oh My! Photos by Steve Babin The Rocket City Tailgate Challenge celebrated its second year on August 22 at the Von Braun Center’s South Hall. A fun, free community event was geared around tailgating, sports and health. Encompassing multiple fundraisers, attendees could participate in Joe Martin’s Adventure camp by bringing school supplies to support Free2Teach while the barbecue grand champion won $1000 to be donated to the charity of the team’s choice. Grand champs Stars and Bars contributed their winnings to the Alabama Kidney Foundation.

Along with the fundraisers, a special guest from Guinness World Records was on hand to judge and award the new world record for the most people performing burpees simultaneously, totaling 386 participants.

Guests were entertained by tunes from the band Driven Under during the festivities.

A kid’s area featured football activities, inflatables and mascots from local teams.

To celebrate their new, state-of-the-art facility, Audi Huntsville held a VIP grand opening event on August 26.

The new dealership, which is located off Highway 72 features a sleek customer lounge — complete with Starbucks coffee and high definition television, plus a high-tech service department and an inventory of more than 120 vehicles. The number represents three times the amount of cars than the previous location.

The family-owned and operated business opened its doors to celebrate and welcome visitors including special guest, President of Audi America, Scott Keogh. Ginger Harper, Senior Vice President of IBERIABANK and Sheila Cummings, President and CEO of Cummings Aerospace were the event co-chairs and emcees. The event honored five women in the community: Dr. Natalie Reto, Teresa Foley-Batts, Joni Green, Dr. Deborah Barnhart and Dr. Juanita Harris.

Attendees were inspired by the honorees as well as keynote speaker Lisa Williams and the personal testimony of program scholar Sherry Harkless.

The event, with an attendance of more than 500, raised critical funds to allow the Women’s Economic Development Council Foundation to continue their mission of providing educational scholarships to local women who want to break the welfare cycle and make a better life by achieving self-sufficiency and economic independence.
