The key is to do the necessary homework, because these RMDs are just one piece of the retirement puzzle, and should be part of a well-coordinated plan. “MAXIMUM CONFUSION?” – WHAT ARE WE TALKING ABOUT HERE? According to the IRS, Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) must be withdrawn from IRAs, 401(k)s, and other retirement accounts at certain ages. People seem to know these rules exist and that penalties for mistakes are hefty, but most don’t know the details. In 48 years of talking with families, we’ve observed that many people worry significantly about this area of their planning.
WHAT KIND OF DETAILS? We hear many questions… I’m turning 70-1/2; when must I take my first required distribution? Should I delay my first distribution to year 2, as allowed by the rules? Do I have to wait until the day I’m actually 70-1/2 to start my distributions? Can I wait until I’m 70-1/2 to take distributions from an inherited IRA account? I’m still working past 70-1/2 and in a 401(k) plan – do I have to withdraw money from it? Can I roll over my RMD amount into a ROTH IRA after paying the required taxes?

Baste the turkey and deck the halls, Huntsville! The holidays are here. With three children who are more involved in sports and activities than ever, this year has been a whirlwind of busy weeks. My holiday wish is to slow down a bit and savor some time with my family when we’re not running in or out of the door. Speaking of doors, Mark Ardin and Leslie Chittam opened theirs to our own Suzanne Conway, and what a treat you’ll have, seeing their home made even more beautiful for Christmas. We shine our Spotlight on Bobby Bradley, a proud Huntsville native who has made her mark in both business and philanthropy. At Centerstage we feature Danny Davis, an artist who specializes in building custom acoustic guitars. The event season has kept us hopping. Photos by Steve Babin On August 3, the AGCRA Rocket City Chapter, the Legacy for Korean War Veterans Foundation and the Army Space Professionals Association co-hosted their 5th Annual Black Tie Charity Ball at VBC’s North Hall. The fundraising event benefits selected Tennessee Valley nonprofit organizations that provide assistance to all veterans and serving soldiers and civilians. The formal event is dedicated to enriching the quality of life of soldiers, veterans and families. To date the BTCB has raised over $70,000 for local veteran organizations in the Tennessee Valley. Around 275 guests attended, including guest speaker, Mr. Ronnie Chronister, Senior Vice President for contracts at Dynetics Incorporated; LTG (R) Bill Phillips, LTG (R) Dick Formica, Tut Fann Veterans and 12 WWII Veterans. Uniquely Done by Donna arranged flowers and décor for the dinner catered by VBC. Twickenham Jazz Band and DJ Cedric Thomas provided the evening’s entertainment. The event was sponsored by Boeing, Dynetics, CALIBRE, COLSA and RiVidium.

Photos by Steve Babin His Way Recovery Center held their 7th annual fundraising dinner on August 8 at the Von Braun Center. With 600 guests in attendance, His Way celebrated the 50th anniversary of the moon landing with special guest, the original “Rocket Boy,” Homer Hickam. Hickam shared stories from his childhood and discussed the past and future of the space program. WaveLink, Inc. was the event sponsor. His Way is a six-month residential drug and alcohol recovery center for men. Located in northeast Huntsville, the His Way campus covers six acres with facilities to house forty residents. Residents obtain employment, learn to manage money, identify and resolve root issues, replace destructive patterns with productive habits, and create a sustainable plan for ongoing recovery and successful living after graduation. The event included dinner, drinks, and live music. All proceeds benefited the animals of the GHHS. GHHS focuses on using training, adoption, education, and advocacy to ensure the humane treatment and welfare of all animals. They offer programs to assist low income pet owners with food, basic vet care and emergency vet care, as well as programs for children. n

Photos by Steve Babin On August 13 more than 300 guests gathered for the 6th Annual Rocket Chef Competition. Four local chefs competed in a cook-off to raise funds for Merrimack Hall Performing Arts Center and the Food Bank of North Alabama. Based on popular and contemporary food television challenges, the competition tested the chefs in a time-pressured environment using “mystery” ingredients from local vendors. This year Angela Ozbolt of Good Company Café took home the trophy, defeating talented Chefs Paul Ackerman of Huntsville Country Club; Luke Hawke of Gemini Kitchen & Cocktails; and Brian Miller of Ruth’s Chris. Before the competition, food enthusiasts enjoyed a cocktail party where they sampled cuisine from each chef’s restaurant. Rocket Chef is one of the most unique fundraisers of the year and has raised over $250,000 since its inception. n

2019 Symphony Ball Advisors Announced Photos by Steve Babin The Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guild’s long-standing tradition continues in 2019, as Symphony Ball Chairwoman, Rosemary Latham, named her ball advisors for the year. A select group of the community’s distinguished men in positions of civic leadership are chosen annually to provide business and financial advice to the ball chair and support the event. To show appreciation for their service to the Guild, Rosemary and her ball committee hosted the men and their spouses at an Advisors’ Cocktail Party in their honor at the home of Pam and Tony Gann on August 18. Photos by Steve Babin The 15th Annual Cancer Society Gala – Belles & Beaus Ball was August 24 at Von Braun Center. The event raises awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society’s mission in the Tennessee Valley. Around 600 guests attended, including 16 individuals honored by the Society, who represent the fight against cancer. Flowers were provided by Glenn’s of Huntsville with dècor underwritten by Cavender’s Western Outfitter. The Craig Duncan Band provided entertainment. Chairpersons Martha Campbell Pullen and Susan Parker led the volunteer committee. The event exceeded its fundraising goal by more than $30,000, bringing the grand total to over $200,000 raised to sustain and further the life-saving mission of the American Cancer Society. The success of the event was thanks in part to sponsors and patrons including Gold Sponsors Damson Honda Acura, dealnews, and Dynetics.

Photos by Steve Babin A Summer Soiree was held on August 21 at Russel Erskine to celebrate 10 seasons of Twickenham Fest, a chamber music festival. More than 200 donors attended the event that was catered by Carlton’s and included flowers arranged by In Bloom. The soiree sponsors were Jerry Damson and Downtown Huntsville, Inc. Use of Russel Erskine was provided by the Dotts family. The festival, founded by world renowned soprano Susanna Phillips Huntington and bassoonist Matthew McDonald, who are both Huntsville natives, brought together top musicians from around the world to celebrate all that chamber music has to offer. Festival dates were August 20-25. Executive Director Bronwen Murray said, “There definitely was something for every music lover throughout the week. Twickenham Fest has garnered a reputation for providing an out-of-the-box experience that is unlike traditional chamber festivals. Supported nearly 100 percent by private donations, the nonprofit festival provides performances that are raw, authentic, and creatively controlled by the artists themselves, giving the audience an experience they won’t get anywhere else.” n

The stately home of Mark Ardin and Leslie Chittam seems to directly channel the Spirit of Christmas. The land on which it sits has been in Chittam’s family for four generations. It has a quiet, peaceful, reflective energy which is especially relevant at this sacred time of year. The calming atmosphere is the perfect backdrop for the amazing, awe-inspiring holiday decorations installed all over the property, both and in and out of doors. The careful placement of the beautiful creations invites you to slow down, and really see what is around. The magical feelings of hope and optimism that attend Christmas are unmistakable. As the gates open onto their secluded property, you see the house in the distance. It is aglow against the night sky. Soft and lavish light spreads across the fields. Danny Davis
Danny Davis is an artist/artisan who creates custom guitars and mandolins in his Huntsville studio. Davis’ understanding of acoustics and mechanical systems comes from a thirty-year career with NASA developing space launch systems. EVENT: How long have you been making guitars and mandolins and what inspired you to begin? DD: I have been making guitars since the early 1990’s. I began because I wanted a nice guitar, but I couldn’t afford one. EVENT: About how long does it take from start to finish to make an instrument? DD: It takes about 12 weeks to make a guitar and about 14 weeks for a mandolin. EVENT: What is your favorite memory of listening to an instrument that you created? DD: My friend, Gary Nichols, a Grammy winning artist, performed on Samantha Brown’s “Places to Love” TV show. His performance was great, and he bragged about my guitar he was playing. The spot was seen by thousands of people and I was very proud. I was also sold out of guitars within a couple of months! n “I love making instruments not only for the satisfaction of working with my hands but also working with my heart to create a unique and meaningful design.” -Danny Davis

Spotlight Bobby Bradley is an entrepreneur and philanthropist who grew up in Huntsville. She now focuses her time on serving others through the nonprofit she cofounded, mentoring, civic and community organizations and her church. EVENT: How would you describe yourself? BB: I am a native of Huntsville and count it a blessing that my professional career allowed me to remain here. After several years in private industry after college, 15 years as a civilian with the U. S. Army, and 14 years with Computer Systems Technology (CST), the company I started with two colleagues, I was able to turn my attention and energy to my “second act,” serving others, giving back, and doing some of the things I always dreamed of doing in a much more focused way. One of the most significant was forming Village of Promise (VoP) in 2011 which I was inspired to do with a childhood friend Gloria Batts. The vision was to eradicate generational poverty one neighborhood at a time. The mission was to develop a continuum of services which supported children from cradle to a sustainable career. The neighborhood we targeted included the one in which we grew up, which further inspired us. I continue to serve on the VoP Board of Directors, supporting the Executive Director Dr. Rachel Ballard and the families we serve. I also enjoy mentoring others and do this with new entrepreneurs, sometimes through The Catalyst and some on a more informal basis, and also with high school seniors through the AUM Foundation. I have enjoyed being able to devote more time to my church, First Missionary Baptist, and as a leader with Bible Study Fellowship, a nondenominational bible study. I currently hold board positions with PeopleTec, Inc, Huntsville Botanical Garden Foundation, and HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology Foundation. EVENT: You’re a native of Huntsville. How did growing up here impact your life and work? BB: God has blessed me throughout my life, starting as a young child, and for the most part it has been in Huntsville. First, I was born to two of the best parents a child could have – Christian, loving, hard-working, selfless, and committed to making my life better. I grew up during segregation and from the beginning my parents wanted to make sure I had a good education which would prepare me for the future. When Catholic priests and nuns came to Huntsville to start a new school for African American children (St. Joseph’s Mission School now Holy Family Catholic School,) my parents made the sacrifice to enroll me for the duration of elementary school. This Christian and academic foundation prepared me for opportunities to come. When integration came later in my high school, this foundation helped me navigate the negative experiences we encountered and end this period with success. Because of the technology and business base
in Huntsville during the late 60’s and my major in math and computer science at Vanderbilt University, I was able to work during the summers at Northrop Corporation. Later after graduation, I received my best job offer from them. Not only was Huntsville a great environment for me as an employee, it also provided an opportunity for me to succeed in business. Huntsville has been and continues to be a supportive place for entrepreneurs. I have to credit Huntsville’s collaborative business environment, availability of strong technical talent, and the talented team of people we had at CST for the success we enjoyed as a company. EVENT: How did you transition from the business sector into starting a nonprofit? BB: Before we sold CST, I had the privilege of meeting Mark Stearns with Lincoln Village Ministry. I was so moved and inspired by the work he and his team were doing in that neighborhood to improve the lives of children and families that I wanted to get involved volunteering, primarily tutoring and mentoring. As I became more involved, I realized that more needed to be done in other areas of Huntsville and we could “divide and conquer” to make an even greater impact in the Huntsville community. Based on what I had learned working with the folks in Lincoln Village and the work that was ongoing at the Harlem Children’s Zone, we believed that we could serve and make a difference in another neighborhood in Huntsville. After much prayer, planning and research and the help of many supporters of this project, Village of Promise was begun in January of 2011.
EVENT: What do you enjoy doing outside of your work? BB: I enjoy traveling, especially with family and friends, cooking, gardening and good movies. EVENT: Tell about your family. BB: I am married to Charley Burruss and we have one daughter, a son-in-law, two adult grandsons, three goddaughters as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts who are all part of our family. I also consider our close friends part of our family. EVENT: What do you love about Huntsville? BB: I love Huntsville first and foremost because it is my home. My family and friends, some since childhood, are here and I love being able to do things with them. Huntsville is also a place of tremendous opportunities not only professionally but to serve and help improve our community. I believe if you want to get involved to follow your passion and use your gifts, you are able to do so. One of my greatest joys is to connect people and when that is done to benefit both parties, I am thrilled. n
EVENT: What is the purpose of Village of Promise? BB: Village of Promise is a Family Advancement Center. We guide and support children and their families as they advance out of poverty. We utilize a twogenerational approach. Every family develops an individualized family advancement plan focusing on the educational, social-emotional, physical, and professional goals of each family member. We provide sustainable tools, resources, and opportunities for families to advance and give back. Every family who completes our continuum of programs will advance out of poverty, which is the VoP mission. Our vision is to break the cycle of poverty one family at a time. EVENT: What programs influenced the practices of Village of Promise? BB: The Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ), based in Harlem, New York, primarily influenced the practices of Village of Promise. Gloria Batts was familiar with the work of its CEO, Geoffrey Canada, and introduced me to their work. We spent time with the HCZ staff, studied their strategies and programs, and made a commitment to replicating their approach here in Huntsville, particularly since they had proven successes.

The event serves as a fundraiser for the nonprofit social organization, AshaKiran, (which translates as Ray of Hope,) an organization that offers free culturally competent services in 45+ languages to diverse communities throughout Alabama. The keynote speaker was Arun Gandhi, the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. The purpose of the event was to raise funds and awareness for the nonprofit organization. The evening included both live and silent auctions along with stories by wish kids and their families. Around 250 guests attended, including the evening’s host, WHNT 19’s Melissa Riopka; Wish Kid Kayla; with wish stories from Kara and Korinna. Hiley Mazda hosted its grand opening event on August 29, for the new state-of-theart Mazda Retail Evolution Showroom. The event also served as the anniversary celebration of 10 years in business with the Huntsville community. The showroom, the first of its kind in Huntsville, will enable Hiley Mazda to better serve Mazda shoppers and owners in North Alabama. It includes more space, high-tech facilities and a wide array of amenities.
