The days are long, but the months and years fly by as we publish this last issue for the year 2018 and complete our 10th year of publishing Huntsville EVENT Magazine. Unless you are eager for time to fly by, stay out of the publishing business. Now that summer heat is behind us, I am looking forward to some grilling and enjoying time outdoors.

In this issue we have been covering events such as the Miracle Bash of 2018, raising funds for Huntsville Hospital’s neonatal unit to purchase needed medical devices and equipment, Therapy Partners Dog Days of Summer, raising funds for our four-legged friends and the 14th Annual Belles and Beaus Ball, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society – all wonderful events for worthy causes that we’ve had the opportunity to photograph – including the 75th Anniversary of United Way of Madison County, and Dinner with Darryl Strawberry as a fundraiser for His Way, another local organization helping the citizens of our community. There are many events in this issue to grab your attention.

I’ve decided the term “slow as Christmas” only applies if you’re a little kid waiting for Santa. If you’re an adult, the holiday season comes at turbo speed with a trail of fire, threatening to catch up to you if your to-do list isn’t kept up-to-date.

As my babies grow into youngsters, the time seems to fly by all the faster.

My goal this holiday season is to take a bit of time to savor the moments of joy that happen amidst the chaos.

Savoring is something that we’ve focused on in this holiday issue. We got together for a holiday baking bash to share our recipes and have some fun together as a staff.

We hope you have time to try out a few of our favorites. With baking comes decorating, and you can gather inspiration from the Leo home, with halls decked – inside and out – for Christmas.

We shine our Spotlight on a Huntsville treasure, Narvell Patton, whose food is a delight at the table and whose spirit is a delight in the community. At Centerstage, an artist whose light literally shines through her work, stained glass artist Julie Gill.

Bash Makes More Miracles Possible Photos by Steve Babin More than 500 guests joined Huntsville Hospital Foundation for the 13th annual Miracle Bash on August 3 at the Huntsville Botanical Garden Grand Hall. Event proceeds benefited the Foundation’s Melissa George Neonatal Memorial Fund and will provide a new Voyager Isolette and ventilator for Huntsville Hospital’s newest Kids Care Critical Care Transport ambulance.

The event was catered by Bubba's Silver Spoon Catering, with floral arrangements by Randy Roper Interiors and live music from Preston Watts. Guests had the opportunity to bid on 150 fabulous silent auction packages, generously provided by area retailers.

Photos by Steve Babin The 14th Annual Belles & Beaus Ball was an event of August 18 at the VBC North Hall, and served to raise funds for the American Cancer Society’s life-saving mission.

Dr. Jim McCarty, Alliance Cancer Care; and Mr. Dan deGrandpre, DealNews emceed the evening’s festivities. Flowers and décor were arranged by Shannon King and Emily Moody. Junctional Rhythm provided entertainment for the event.

The Belles & Beaus Ball was a wonderful evening to celebrate, remember, and fight back against cancer. A significant amount of money was raised to further the American Cancer Society’s mission. Specifically, over $30,000 was raised to support a local, five-county patient transportation program.

Baking Bash 31

Nothing says happy holidays like baking, except maybe baking with a group of friends and family.

We gathered a few tips by getting together for the benefit of baking up fun for our EVENT readers. We hope you enjoy our favorite recipes – brought to you with a heap of love and a few cups of laughter from “our kitchen” to yours.

Raspberry Thumbprint Cookies 1 cup 2/3 cup 1/2 tsp 2 cups 1/2 cup

butter, softened sugar almond extract flour raspberry jam

Glaze 1 cup 2-3 tsp 1 tsp

powdered sugar water almond extract

In a mixing bowl, combine butter, sugar and 1/2 teaspoon almond extract. Beat at medium speed, being sure to scrape bowl often until it becomes really creamy.

Gradually add in the flour at low speed, again scraping bowl often until it is well mixed. Cover well and place in the refrigerator for at least an hour. You want the dough to be firm (but not too hard.)

Preheat the oven to 350 and line cookie sheets with parchment paper. Shape dough into a 1 inch ball and place about 2 inches apart on cookie sheet. Make an indentation with your thumb – don’t worry if edges crack slightly.

Fill each with a heaping 1/4 teaspoon jam.

Bake for 14-18 minutes until edges are lightly brown. Remove from oven and let stand 1 minute on cookie sheet and then remove to cooling rack and cool completely.

Combine the glaze ingredients with a whisk and drizzle over the cookies.

Grandma Johnson’s Tea Cakes 3 cups 1-1/4 cup 1 cup 2 1/4 cup 2 tsp

self-rising flour sugar shortening eggs buttermilk vanilla

Cream sugar and shortening together. Add eggs and mix well. Add flour, buttermilk and vanilla and mix. Roll out thin and cut with a cookie cutter.

Place on greased cookie sheet and bake at 400 degrees about 8 minutes.

Judy’s Peanut Butter Fudge 1/2 cup 2 cups 3 tbs 1/2 cup 1 tsp 1/2 cup Lori Boatfield, Editor My Grandma Johnson always made these cookies around Christmastime. When I was growing up, my mom continued the tradition, but added a peanut butter fudge filling to make tea cake sandwich cookies. They were my dad’s favorite Christmas treat.

margarine – not whipped sugar cocoa milk vanilla peanut butter

Cut margarine into sauce pan, add sugar, cocoa and milk and heat over medium heat, stirring until butter is melted and mixture is creamy. Bring to a rapid boil, stirring constantly. Boil for two minutes or until a soft ball forms when dropped into cold water. Remove from heat and beat with mixer on high, add peanut butter and vanilla and beat until smooth. Spread onto teacakes for tea cake sandwiches or pour into buttered dish to cool and serve as fudge.

Pecan Pie Muffins 2/3 cup butter 2 eggs 1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed 1/2 cup flour 1/4 tsp baking soda 1/2 - 3/4 cup chopped pecans Dash of cinnamon Dash of nutmeg Mix eggs and butter together in one bowl. Mix next three ingredients in separate bowl. Combine wet ingredients with dry ingredients and stir until moist. Spray mini muffin tins with non-stick spray and fill about 2/3 full. Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes. (Start checking them around 15 minutes) Patty Satterly Creative Director Graphic Designer

A friend of mine made these for a women’s church social and they taste just like pecan pie! Enjoy!

Triple Treats 1 pkg chocolate cake mix 1 pkg instant pudding mix Add and mix 3 eggs 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup oil Add 1 package chips 1 package nuts

Chess Cake Squares 1 box 1 stick 1

yellow cake mix melted butter egg

1 box powdered sugar 1 (8 oz) pkg cream cheese 3 eggs

Put into a greased pan and bake at 325 degrees for 35 minutes. Let cool. Cut into squares and enjoy with or without vanilla ice cream.

Mix the first three ingredients and press into a 9x13 inch pan. Mix the next three ingredients well and pour over the above mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes.

This recipe came from my husband’s great aunt in Atlanta. She iced hers with chocolate frosting. NOTE: You can use the chocolate cake mix with the pudding in the mix and eliminate the instant pudding.

I got this recipe from my mother. One time she made them when my children were very young. We found one of them under the dining table eating the tops off and leaving the crust.

Red Velvet Crinkle Cookies 1 box Red Velvet cake mix 1⁄2 cup vegetable oil 2 large eggs Confectioner’s sugar or granulated sugar, for rolling Preheat oven to 350°. Stir in cake mix, oil and eggs in a large bowl until dough forms. Dust hands with confectioners’ sugar and shape dough into 1-inch balls. Roll balls in confectioners’ sugar and place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.

Bake for 8-10 minutes or until center is just set.

Remove from pans after a minute or so and cool on wire racks.

Christmas Crack 1 sleeve 1 cup 1 cup 2 cups 1 cup

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Spread parchment paper over a jelly roll pan, making sure to let the paper cover the sides of the pan. In a saucepan combine the sugar and butter. Bring to a full, rolling regular Ritz crackers boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally. A full rolling butter boil is one that doesn’t let up once you stir it. Once it’s really brown sugar boiling, set your timer for 3 minutes and stop stirring. After 3 minutes, semisweet chocolate chips immediately pour over crackers. Do your best to put some on each chopped walnuts or pecans cracker, but don’t worry about covering each one completely.

Bake at 400 degrees for 7 minutes. Once it’s been in the oven for 2-3 minutes, it will start to bubble. This is when the candy will cover the crackers on its own. They’ll also move around a bit, so you can see why it’s so important to have a bit of extra parchment paper up around the sides.

Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate chips over the top.

Put back in the oven for 2 minutes. Remove from oven and let sit for 1-2 minutes. Spread melted chocolate over toffee and top with chopped nuts. Cool completely and break into pieces. Enjoy.

Ann’s Chocolate Snow Cookies 1 pkg 1/4 cup 1 1/2 cup

fudge brownie mix water egg beaten powdered sugar

Combine dry mix with water and egg. Stir until well combined. Using a very small scoop or tablespoon, scoop dough into a bowl of powdered sugar and shape into a ball, fully coating dough in powdered sugar. Place on greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 12 minutes. Remove immediately to a wire rack to cool.

Thirty-seven young women will make their debut at the 2018 Symphony Ball. The young women, who have completed their freshman year of college, enjoyed their first week of the season with three activities: the Debutante Tea at the home of Mrs. Pamela Gann, a special Debutantes and Presenters event at Randolph School’s Thurber Arts Center, and two service projects. The Von Braun Center held a groundbreaking and celebration on Wednesday, August 15, in anticipation of the facility’s new Music Hall. Guests enjoyed a live musical performance from the Lamont Landers Band, plus free fare provided by the VBC. Food was also available for purchase from Fire & Spice, O Taste & See BBQ, and MaggieMoo’s Ice Cream.

Construction is underway for the new music hall and it should be ready to rock by late next fall. At the northeast corner of Monroe Street and Clinton Avenue, the venue will feature an open-floor plan that can accommodate 1,200 at the floor level and 200 at balcony level. Along with the music hall, there will be a 4,000 square-foot rooftop bar and a restaurant.

Julie Gill Julie Gill, owner of Big Glass Art, is an artist specializing in stained glass. She grew up in the Midwest in a blue-collar family where she attended Catholic school through 6th grade. In junior high and high school, Gill signed up for every art and craft class available. Her summers were spent on her grandparent’s farm and 4-H camps. She relocated to Alabama in 2006 with her family and is proud to call Huntsville home.

EVENT: What inspired you as a youngster to be an artist in this medium?

JG: I attended Catholic School which meant five weekdays of mass during school hours plus mandatory Sunday attendance.

I loved the brilliant colors of the windows. I always tried to position myself in line to sit at the end of the pew, that way I could stretch out my hand or foot and play with the color on my skin.

EVENT: How did you get started?

JG: In 2002 I received a gift certificate which covered a class and the necessary basic beginner tools.

EVENT: Do you have a favorite piece or pieces? What makes them your favorite?

JG: I made a series of portraits several years ago. They are of my children, which of course makes them important to me but also, they are technically challenging with many intricate pieces.

[They are] artistically unique in that I don't know of any realistic portraits in leaded glass that don’t use paint to accomplish the facial features. And finally, they follow a converted grey scale from the least textured glass representing white to the heaviest texture representing black.

EVENT: Do you enjoy teaching others about your art?

JG: I do. I find most people think that stained glass is becoming a lost art. Stained glass is actually thriving. Not so much in churches anymore but certainly in homes and businesses and as a hobby. I also find the public underestimates how much work goes into creating a stained glass panel.

EVENT: What do you love about Huntsville?

JG: I love the incredible diversity: The cultures. The religions.

The industry and socio-economic differences, as well as the transient nature of the city – it allows for an open-minded and ever-changing platform. You never know who you'll meet, what their life story will be or what their plan for the future is.

Skating in the Park Is there anything quite as magical as an outdoor ice skating rink in winter? Every year, right around Thanksgiving, Skating in the Park opens right behind the Huntsville Museum of Art. Home for the Holidays

The lovely home of Nicole and Jada Leo reflects their open-hearted approach to hospitality. But during Christmastime, they post a couple of soldiers at their front door – nutcracker soldiers, that is. The tall figures wear vibrant uniforms and jolly expressions that belie their serious post. They comprise just a part of the festive scene that welcomes family and friends to the Leo home for the holidays.

The house sits on an acre of land in the picturesque Lake Forest subdivision. The property is a certified national waystation for monarchs. It boasts a swan-stocked lake that radiates at sunset. This magical backdrop makes a splendid spot for a wedding. And a wedding they had – or two to be exact (plus plenty of other events) in the three short years that they have owned the home. They have hosted many fundraisers to benefit the community. Some of the charities and nonprofits that they hold dear are the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, the Boys and Girls Club, Greengate School, Manna House, Downtown Rescue Mission and Habitat for Humanity.

While most people their age are downsizing, the Leo’s decided to do the opposite. They bought the home to become a destination for their entire family. They have children and grandchildren out of state and they wanted to create a serene respite for them to enjoy and rejuvenate from the hectic world. A place to be still, enjoy being together while taking in the incredible nature all around. It is this quietness that Nicole says is the defining character of the home.

They are, piece by piece, making into a place that is uniquely their own. Their inspiration comes from their favorite travels, interests and personal sentiments. One of their favorite destinations is Italy.

After their last visit, they painted the exterior brick of the home with an Italian lime-wash.

Their kitchen boasts a beautifully restored handmade 1963 Italian Donoratico rowing shell.

Christmas is a special time for family and tradition at the Leo’s.

Drawing guests in, the balustrade is festooned with greenery and twinkling lights, intertwined with glittering elements of the outdoors: berries, pinecones and poinsettias.

Just beyond the staircase, a glimpse of Nicole’s favorite tradition can be found: that of the Christmas tree. She explained, “It’s an ancient custom said to exalt the value of life, as in winter, what is evergreen becomes a sign of undying life, that reminds Christians of the tree of life in Genesis 2:9.”

The living room tree repeats the theme with a majestic poinsettia and magnolia topper, with layers of golden tones with brass instrument ornaments along with traditional mercury glass. A billowing drape of magnolia leaf garland adorns the mantle.

In preparation for a family Christmas, a tree in a sweet pink bedroom, covered in dazzling dream-like confections stands next to a dollhouse, between the twin beds just waiting for those special guests with visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads.

Nicole fondly recalls helping her mother with decorations during her childhood and with baking homemade cookies, candies, pies, and unique handmade gifts. Hot chocolate and Christmas caroling are cherished family memories for her as well. She learned a valuable lesson from her mother who taught her that the emphasis of Christmas should be on giving – and that even when you have nothing monetarily to give, you can still give your help. A perfect sentiment to remember this holiday season.

The sold-out event welcomed 168 guests of all ages who dressed in their favorite fairytale and superhero attire to meet, interact with, and enjoy entertainment by a host of storybook and comic book heroes, heroines, and villains, brought to life by the James Clemens High School Theatre Department. It’s the holiday season! You know that “to-do” list that you have for 2018?

Now’s the time to finish it, because 2019 will be here before we know it.

Several holiday events and activities will return, including Galaxy of Lights at Huntsville Botanical Garden, Skating in the Park and the Tinsel Trail in Big Spring International Park. Santa’s Village moves a few blocks to the Historic Huntsville Depot. You’ll be able to see The Nutcracker and A Christmas Carol at the Von Braun Center and even enjoy a Holiday Magic Dinner at Burritt, so remember to get your tickets early. The Annual Christmas Parade and Spirit of Christmas Past Homes Tour and Luminaries are very popular events in downtown Huntsville.

Alien Worlds and Androids is the featured exhibit at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, and the Huntsville Museum of Art is hosting Louis Comfort Tiffany: Treasures from the Driehaus Museum. These exhibits are sure to bring thousands through the doors during their brief runs here.

The 2018 Rocket City Classic is back for its third year in the Von Braun Center! This year’s doubleheader will feature UAH Men's Basketball vs. Fort Valley State University in game one and Alabama Men's Basketball vs. Liberty in game two. The VBC is also home ice for UAH and Huntsville Havoc hockey. Come out and support our teams.

Narvell Patton is a self-professed Southern girl who inherited her love of cooking from her mother. In business for over 20 years, Catering by Narvell specializes in delicious fare from down-home Southern food to elegant hors d’oeuvres. Look for Narvell’s entrees-to-go every Tuesday at Walker’s Market in Five Points.

EVENT: How did you decide to get into the catering business?

NP: I liked to cook from a very early age. My parents worked in the fields, and I’d have my younger sister with me. I was in the kitchen with Mom all the time.

One day I decided [at the age of 7] I was going to make dinner. I prepared what I called my mother’s favorite: always comfort food. I fixed smothered chicken, stewed new potatoes and cornbread.

EVENT: What did it mean for you to win the 2017 Small Business Award in the Culinary category?

NP: I am still in awe about that award because when I was contacted that I’d been nominated, I could not imagine it was a possibility. I describe myself as a behind-thescenes person. I just want people to be happy. I felt [winning the award] was God’s way of allowing me to believe that hard work and loyalty pays off. It was the most humbling experience of my life, and I will always cherish it! n

EVENT: You were only 7 years old! What did your mother think about that?

NP: Mother was surprised and happy, complimentary, and very encouraging. My goal was to grow up and get married, and imitate my mother. It sticks in my mind that mother said always to do your best.

EVENT: What kind of events do you like to cater?

NP: I cater corporate events, private parties, weddings, lunches, birthday dinners, cocktail parties… I like private events because I like to give one-on-one service. I also like to do weddings because everyone is so happy. The largest wedding I ever catered was about 700 people.

EVENT: What is your recipe for success?

NP: My goal is to prepare food the day of an event. I grew up having fresh food every day, and that’s what I like to use in my business. My parents were sharecroppers and raised everything – pigs, cows, chickens, as well as a garden. I cherish and respect that, and clients respect that too. I get up early and go to the grocery store every day.

I get to my catering studio between 7:30 and 8 a.m. and don’t leave until 5 p.m. I don’t feel like it’s work if you’re having fun.

EVENT: Do clients tell you what kind of food they want or a theme for their event?

NP: I don’t really do themes, but I like it when clients have an opinion about what they want. But I’ve learned that number one: I’m a southern girl who grew up in the country, but I’ve also learned to cook a variety of foods. I have about ten jillion cookbooks! I like to read, so I read a lot of recipes, but then I like to make them my own.

EVENT: How many events do you believe you’ve done over the last 20 years you’ve been in business?

NP: Oh, too many to even count, but hardly a week goes by that I don’t have some kind of event! I like to be busy and fulfill my engagements. For example, there was a fire this last year in my catering kitchen. A week later was a cocktail party for 450 to 500 people. I prayed and prayed for a solution, and with friends, found a commissary kitchen to cook in, and we pulled it off! Mom always taught me to treat people right, do your best, and to love people because you never know when you have to ask for help. I came face to face with mother’s teaching when the fire happened. I received a lot of help from my family and close friends, and with that help, it took only two months to get back into my catering kitchen. It could have been much longer.

EVENT: You’re a life-long resident of Huntsville. What do you think about the changes to Huntsville over the years?

NP: When I was growing up, it was a lot more rural, and the county seemed separated from the city. When my parents said “we’re going to town” that was a big deal! The connection between county and city has grown tremendously. It has changed the way we lived and thought. The best part of the growth has been the opening of jobs and economic development.

Miss AmeriCASA celebrated its 5th annual event on September 9. The event serves as a fundraiser for the CASA program for children caught up in the legal system who have often suffered abuse or neglect. This year’s event raised $20,000. At Miss AmeriCASA, guests bid for the right to wear one of 50 state sashes. After a sashing ceremony, the Miss America pageant began live on television. The guest wearing the sash that corresponded with the newly crowned Miss America became the new Miss AmeriCASA. She received a replica crown from Jimmy Smith Jewelers, a basket of amazing prizes including Botox, Coolsculpting, Ultherapy, massage, a night at the Westin and more.

The evening also featured a Gala Gown Preview by Carriage House and a silent auction full of amazing items donated by local businesses. Plus, Handel’s Ice Cream delighted party goers with pink champagne ice cream. n continued on page 78
