Happy Holidays Huntsville! I can’t tell you how strange it feels to write those words. It really seems like we just celebrated the 4th of July last week! I know I go on and on about how time is flying at warp speed. Maybe it’s the deadlines of the publishing industry, maybe that’s just how life is. Regardless of the speed at which we got here, we are now fast approaching the holidays. It’s time to relish the end of 2016 and celebrate great times with good friends and family. Look out for one another, especially those who are lonely or in need of caring, comfort or just a friendly face.

I sincerely hope you enjoy our November December issue. It is our largest issue to date and is packed with events from the Miracle Bash, Dog Days of Summer, Fresh from the Garden and finishes off with HudsonAlpha’s Tie the Ribbons.

When you’re little, the year seems to creep by toward the holidays, hence the phrase “slow as Christmas.” That phrase doesn’t apply when you’re an adult with responsibilities: shopping and baking to do; perhaps travel to book; children to chauffeur to rehearsals for Christmas plays and on and on. It all seems to fly by. This year, I’m resolving to enjoy the worthwhile things and let some of the less vital details go. Details like painstakingly crafting a bow for each gift only to see them squashed when the presents are stacked in the car! Gift bags, tissue paper – the end. My children are still young and we all know how fleeting that is.

We hope you enjoy the holiday issue of EVENT! We’re proud of what we’ve put together. In our featured editorial, we share some of our favorite holiday recipes and why they’re special. At Centerstage, Huntsville Symphony Orchestra’s violinist Ashley Poppe imparts lovely words about her craft and her life. Annual Miracle Bash Raises Life-Saving Funds

Huntsville Hospital Foundation’s 11th annual Miracle Bash fundraiser was held on August 5 at the Huntsville Museum of Art, with 440 guests attending.

Attendees were treated to a buffet banquet by Bubba’s Catering and enjoyed a silent auction benefiting the cause. Flowers were provided by Mark Kimbrough and Ron Cooper of In Bloom Floral Design Studio with décor by Randy Roper Interiors.

Proceeds benefit The Melissa George Neonatal Memorial Fund, providing Huntsville Hospital Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (RNICU) with up-to-date equipment and life-saving technologies.

Since 2005, The Melissa George Neonatal Memorial Fund at the Huntsville Hospital Foundation has raised over 2.5 million dollars to help save the lives of newborns and their mothers at Huntsville Hospital for Women and Children. The overwhelming community support of the annual Miracle Bash has helped to provide families with the life-supporting neonatal intensive care they desperately need.

American Cancer Society Lights Up the Night to Save Lives

The American Cancer Society’s 12th annual Summer Lights Celebration was held on August 20. This one-of-a-kind evening featured great food, spectacular silent and live auction items and much more. The support of event patrons allows the ACS to save lives by helping people stay well and get well, find cures, and fight back against cancer.

600 guests attended along with honorees Sheriff Blake Dorning and Sandy Knowling – both cancer survivors who shared their stories of strength with event patrons. Other honored guests included the Deke Damson family, representing Damson’s Platinumlevel sponsorship commitment. Anne Cary Walker Trust and Donny’s Diamond Gallery also provided sponsorship.

Violinist Winslow Davis entertained during cocktail hour.. Over $200,000 was raised to benefit local cancer patients and national research and advocacy efforts. The largest single donor was Donny Maleknia, who donated beautiful Donny’s Diamond Gallery pieces that brought over $15,000.

In anticipation of the 53rd Symphony Ball, the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guild enjoyed an end-of-the-summer social on August 28, hosted by Ball Chairwoman Linda Akenhead and her ball committee. Each year, the ball chair selects a distinguished group of advisors from amongst the community’s top civic leaders to provide business counsel, financial advice, and support. The cocktail party was thrown in appreciation of their service and contribution.

Held at the home of Jean and Bill Salter, a variety of indulgent goodies were provided

by Ina Rosa of Chef on Call, including: beef teres major on crostini, crab dip with bread rounds, mini cream horns, fudge and key lime tarts and many more delectable treats.

For a special holiday treat, Huntsville EVENT Magazine was honored to have a guest correspondent answer some questions about his work at Christmas and all through the year. This guest wears a red suit, has a never-ending to-do list, enlists a few helpers and makes magic happen for boys and girls all over the world on Christmas Eve. Our Spotlight is none other than Santa Claus!

EVENT: What’s your favorite thing about being Santa Claus?

SC: I enjoy making people happy. It’s all about giving back to others. That’s one off the many things that I enjoy about being Santa – the opportunity to raise people’s spirits and to serve others at such a special time of year.

EVENT: What do you love about visiting the Huntsville area at Christmastime?

SC: Huntsville is Santa’s kind of place. There is such diversity in Huntsville, and there is such a caring spirit. We all know those are among the things that make any holiday season memorable.

EVENT: What’s your favorite kind of cookie?

SC: Little Debbies and a cold glass of milk.

EVENT: My daughter is curious about Christmas lists and wants to be sure you’ll know what she’d like even she doesn’t spell correctly. Do you have a funny story about kids’ Christmas lists?

SC: Santa, of course, is old school. So I was somewhat baffled when a young man showed me his Christmas list on his cell phone. Being the traditionalist that I am, Santa prefers his Christmas lists to be handwritten.

EVENT: Do you have a favorite story you’d like to share about the Santa experience?

SC: Two years ago, a woman brought her newborn child to me for photos. The child, I discovered, was five days old.

The mother did not want to go to a more crowded setting, fearful that the child might be exposed to illness. It was true joy for Santa to be able to hold a five-day-old child in my lap.

EVENT: How do you keep up your energy for the work you must do? Do you have a special Santa exercise routine?

Nature walks at the North Pole, perhaps?

SC: Aerobics with the reindeer and elves. Santa, of course, is also the personal trainer.

EVENT: What do you like to do after you’ve finished up all your work?

SC: First, a deep and satisfied sleep, knowing that all of the presents have been delivered. Then a hearty meal.

EVENT: What’s your best advice for children this Christmas?

SC: Do your homework, mind your parents and stay out off trouble. n

My experiences have been both great and commonplace, mostly the latter. If I have to pick who I am now – I am a wife, mommy, musician, teacher.

Lover of family, books, music and God.” Who inspires you (musically or otherwise?)

I absolutely love Yo Y -Yo Y Ma, though he isn’t a Yo violinist. His dedicat a ion to his craft at f an ft a d his mu m sicality t ty are astounding and motivating. More personally, y my y, inspiration comes fr f om my violin teachers: Pamela Hentges of the National Symphony Orchestra and William Preucil, Concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra. These two gave me the tools I needed to accomplish my musical goals. Their teaching not only helped me musically, but made me more well-rounded.

What’s your fa f vorite Huntsville hangout?

I hav a e th av thr hree youn u g childr un d en, so right now, dr w my w, m fa fav avorite thing to do is to go to the Space and Rocket Center to let them learn about space and the Botanical Garden where we enj n oy picnics and adventures nj together as we explore natu t re. tu Who’s your fa f vorite singer or band?

My dad introdu d ced me to a group du u called The King’s up Singers through which I began to love classic hits f om group fr u s like the Beach Boys. I defi up f nitely tend fi toward oldies, like Frank Sinatra, or more modern r , rn Michael Bub u le, but am always game to have a little ub f nk thrown in fo fu f r fu f n.

Where would you most like to travel and why?

There are too many places and too little money, y but y, still on my list is Greece, because of the history r and ry architecture, New Zealand and to see the Aurora Borealis.

If you could play with any orchestra or musician, where/who would it be and why?

When I was a little girl, I always wanted to play in the Boston Pops under John Williams. Now, I’d probably want to play in an orchestra in a big city. But when it comes right down to it, I would play a chamber concert with my two sisters, both excellent violinists and my mom, a wonderfu f l fu pianist. There is nothing like being ab a le to play and enj n oy great works of art with those you love most, nj and with those who have given you the gift f and ft discipline of enj n oying music. nj

One of my fa f vorite memories is playing in the opera pit orchestra during college – nothing like being thrown in a pit with a bunch of musicians. To T make it even more special, I met my husband du d ring that time. He was the stage manager and would leave f owers on my chair du fl d ring the intermissions of the perfo f rmances. How old were you when you began playing?

I was two years old, and my fi f rst teacher was Mary r ry Ann Mears. I had two older sisters who already played, so th t e violin was not unfa f miliar to me. It was fa my Mom who diligently and fa f ithfu f lly worked with fu me all those years to give me the gift f of music. I see ft more every day what an amazing gift f that is as I ft begin to teach my own children.

What is your fa f vorite piece to perfo f rm and why? fo I could no more pick a fa f vorite piece than I could pick a fa f vorite child. It really depends on the condu d ctor, the space, the group du u and me. Each piece up I have ever played has left f a mark ft r on my life rk f in some fe way a . And each time you play ay a a piece again, th ay t at mar ark ar rk or imprint becomes stronger, richer, and deeper.

So when musicians hear pieces, we are not just experiencing the sound or place we have heard it befo f re, but we are treasuring the people we played fo alongside, picturing the conductor, the audience, the fe f el of our instruments and remembering the emotions. It is a unique and beautifu f l thing. fu

T o that I always enj Tw n oy listening to and playing nj are Tc T haikovsky 5 and Brahms 2. They have always held a special place in my heart, probably because they were some of the fi f rst symphonies I played in youth orchestra, and more importantly, I have the memory of playing these alongside my beloved teacher and fr f iend. These pieces have had many years to marinate in memories. Every time I play them, it’s like visiting with a dear old fr f iend that you just don’t want to say goodb d ye to. n db

The taste of Mama’s pumpkin pie can conjure images of childhood, or for some, the smell of Gran’s slightly blackened rolls and the blaring smoke alarm take us right back to her kitchen at Christmas.

Whether you’re home for the holidays or far away, we hope these dishes bring back sweet memories of family and friends.

the soup and chicken broth. Add two eggs, one cup milk, salt and pepper to taste. Add water if needed to make the mixture creamy. Pour into greased 13x9 baking dish and bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes until golden brown.

Lamb Chops with Tipsy Tomatoes Lee Nast

Holiday Baked Brie Carolyn Stephenson

1 17 oz package frozen puff pastry, thawed 1 8 oz brie cheese round 1/8 cup toasted sliced almonds 1/4 cup of cranberry chutney

Preheat oven to 425, lightly grease cookie sheet. Roll out puff pastry, place Brie, rind-on, on top of pastry, then place chutney on top of cheese. Place almonds on top of chutney, bundle puff pastry up and around the cheese.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, let cool for 5 minutes and serve with your favorite crackers or toasted French rounds.

Blue Cheese Olive Spread Carolyn Stephenson

8 oz package cream cheese 1/2 stick of real butter 4 oz of blue cheese Small can chopped black olives 1 tbsp finely chopped onion 1 tbsp cooking sherry

Let the cream cheese, butter and blue cheese reach room temperature so they are easy to blend together. Add chopped black olives, chopped onion and cooking sherry.

Combine all ingredients and refrigerate for at least 8 hours. Serve with wheat crackers.

Note: This was served at Christmas as long as I can remember. If you love blue cheese, you’ll be hooked. - Carolyn

Holiday Turkey Crack Dip Lee Nast

2 cups leftover turkey or chicken, finely chopped, or 3 cans chicken, drained.

2 blocks of light cream cheese at room temp 1 jar of light chunky blue cheese from the salad aisle 1 small container of blue cheese crumbles 1 large jar of Franks Hot Buffalo Wing Sauce Celery and crackers

Mix all ingredients with blender for about a minute. Spray 8x13 baking dish with cooking spray, pour in mixture.

Cook at 350 until bubbly, about 20 minutes. Serve with celery and wheat crackers. You can make ahead and store in fridge until ready to heat.

Nana Foshee’s Cornbread Dressing Lori Boatfield

1 large pone of cornbread 3 chicken breasts, bone-in Pepperidge Farm Herb Seasoned Stuffing Mix 1 small onion 1 can cream of celery soup 2 cans cream of chicken soup 2 eggs 1 cup milk Salt and pepper

Prepare the cornbread and boil three chicken breasts (bone-in) ahead of time. Remove chicken and broth from refrigerator. Remove chicken from broth and set aside.

Crumble cooked cornbread into fine pieces. Mix in 1/2 bag of stuffing mix. Mix in diced onion, then stir in all

2 racks of lamb, cleaned 1 container of cherry tomatoes 5 stems of rosemary 1 tbsp of brown spicy mustard 1/4 cup of balsamic vinegar 1/2 cup good olive oil 1 cup of any red wine Pepper and salt

Preheat oven to 425. Mix mustard, oil, vinegar, generous amount of salt and pepper and the leaves of 2 rosemary stems. Pour wine over tomatoes. Place lamb racks and sauce in a gallon ziplock, move around to coat. Marinate for 30 minutes at room temperature. Remove, saving the marinade. In a large skillet, brown the outside of lamb chops. Spray a 10x13 casserole dish with cooking spray.

Place 2 tbsp of marinade in with tomatoes, toss until coated. In baking pan, place the remaining rosemary stems down the center. Pour tomatoes and wine over stems. Interlock the lamb chops so that the tomatoes are under them in the center. Cover bone tips with foil. Cook for approximately 15 minutes. Serves 4.

Brussels and Bacon Lee Nast

15-20 medium Brussels sprouts cleaned with stems removed 10-15 pieces of bacon, cooked and crumbled 1/4 cup of any fruit juice 1 tbsp of olive oil 1 tbsp of bacon grease Aged balsamic vinegar to drizzle or store-bought balsamic glaze

Place bacon on a baking sheet. Bake at 425 until crunchy.

Drain on paper towels, reserving grease. In a large frying pan, add olive oil, bacon grease and Brussels sprouts opened, face-down. Brown for about 5 minutes, turning occasionally. Turn down heat, pour juice over and cover to steam sprouts for 5 minutes or until desired doneness.

Remove from heat. Sprinkle with bacon crumbles and drizzle with balsamic and salt and pepper to taste. Serves 4 plus.

Note: I forever hated Brussels sprouts until I created this recipe. My boys love them too. The bacon is bliss! I serve them with lamb chops for our Christmas dinner along with mushroom risotto. - Lee

Cheesy Baked Potato Casserole Patty Satterly

6 potatoes boiled or baked in jacket, chilled overnight and shredded 1 cup sour cream 1 cup milk 2 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese 1/2 stick butter (or a little more, melted) 1/2 cup green onions and tops chopped up

Melt butter and add cheese, onions, sour cream and milk.

Mix well. Stir in potatoes. Salt to taste. Bake in a greased 9x13 pan at 350 for 45 minutes.

Cranberry Relish Carolyn Stephenson

1 1/2 cups sugar 1/2 cup water 2 cups chopped fresh pears 12 oz fresh cranberries 1/2 tsp nutmeg 1/4 tsp allspice 1 cinnamon stick

Bring sugar and water to a boil in a large sauce pan; boil for 5 minutes. Add pears, cranberries, nutmeg, allspice and cinnamon stick; bring back to a boil for 3-4 minutes.

Remove from heat; cover and let cool. Once at room temperature, refrigerate. For best results, make cranberries the night before you plan to serve to allow them to gel.

Note: This recipe came from my sister, and my daughter Lauren can eat her weight in this. Try this and you’ll never go back to canned cranberry! - Carolyn

Nana’s Sweet Potato Casserole Lori Boatfield

3 cups cooked sweet potatoes 1/2 cup butter 1 tsp vanilla 1 cup sugar 2 eggs, beaten 1/3 cup milk

Combine ingredients above and mix with an electric mixer.

Pour into a 13x9 buttered baking dish.

Topping 1 cup brown sugar 1/3 cup butter 1/2 cup plain flour 1 cup chopped pecans

Mix well with fingers and sprinkle on top of potato mixture. Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.

Note: My mother and mother-in-law both taught me a lot about cooking continue to do so. This is one of my motherin-law’s dishes that I take pride in making and sharing each year during the holidays. - Lori

My Mom’s Strawberry Cake Patty Satterly

Cake: 1 pkg white cake mix 1 pkg strawberry jello 1 cup oil 1/2 cup water and juice 4 large eggs (room temperature) 1/2 pkg (5 oz) frozen strawberries thawed

Thaw strawberries. Take 1 tbsp of juice from strawberries, add enough water to make 1/2 cup. Mix cake mix with jello. Mix water and juice mixture with oil and eggs. Mix well. Add strawberries and mix together. Grease and flour 2 cake pans or 9x13 pan. Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes or until brown. Let cake cool before frosting.

Frosting 1 pkg Confectioners Sugar 1 stick butter (1/4 lb) 1/2 pkg (5 oz) frozen strawberries

Make sure berries and rest of juice measure less than 5 ozs. Pour sugar into bowl with softened butter. Add berries and half the juice. Blend well. Add remaining juice by teaspoon because one drop will change the consistency of the frosting.

Note: This is so good everyone in my family chooses it for their birthday cake! - Patty

Lemon Bars Carolyn Stephenson Crust: 1/3 cup butter 1 cup sifted flour 2 tbsp sugar

Cut with a pastry blender until well blended; press firmly into square pan. Bake for 15-20 minutes at 350.

Filling: 2 eggs, beaten 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar 3/4 cup shredded coconut 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 1/4 tsp salt 1/8 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp vanilla

Hand-mix all ingredients; spread on partially baked crust. Bake 20-30 minutes at 350.

Glaze: 2 tbsp grated lemon rind 2 tbsp lemon juice 1 cup sifted powdered sugar

Combine ingredients and hand-mix until smooth; spread on hot bars. Let completely cool; cut into 24 bars.

Note: Mom’s lemon bars are always a favorite for the holidays. If only I had the lemon tree now that I had growing up! - Carolyn

My Secret is Out Banana Pudding Lee Nast

5 eggs divided in to two separate bowls.

(Yolks in one, whites in another) 2 cans of no-fat evaporated milk 1 stick of butter 3/4 cup of sugar 1/4 cup of brown sugar 4 heaping spoons of flour 1/4 tsp of cinnamon 1/2 tsp of salt 1 tsp vanilla 1 tsp of butternut flavoring 1/8 tsp cream of tartar 3-4 bananas Vanilla wafers

Mix egg yolks and milk together, then mix all the dry ingredients together except for cream of tartar. In a large pan, on low heat, melt butter. Pour in milk/egg mixture.

Slowly add dry mixture stirring constantly with a whisk until it thickens. Remove from heat. Add flavorings, stir and let cool. Line bottom of casserole dish with wafers and 1-2 bananas. Cover with 1/ 2 of pudding. Repeat.

Beat whites with cream of tartar until stiff. Cover pudding. Bake at 325 until peaks are lightly browned.

Therapy Partners Inc. hosted its 10th annual Dog Days of Summer benefit on August 19 at the Adams Street gardens of Connie and Rusty Stephenson.

Around 250 guests were in attendance, as well as some furry friends! The event was catered by Reese Covington of Rock House Catering Company and live music was provided by Scott Morgan.

Approximately 150 guests gathered for the Jackson Center Open House and Ribbon Cutting held on September 16. A beautiful table of hors d’oeuvres was served by the Jackson Center Culinary Staff under the direction of Chef Daniel LaBoudiere.

Music was provided by Jonathan Laird and Flowers by Jamie arranged the flowers for the buffet table.

Among the guests in attendance were Chip Cherry, President & CEO, Chamber of Commerce; John Hamilton, City Administrator at City of Huntsville; Kenny Anderson, Office of the Mayor, City of Huntsville; and the Emcee was Gary Bolton of Adtran.

The Jackson Conference Center was celebrating their newly remodeled space.

Two smaller board rooms were transformed into an 1152 square foot Board of Director’s Room and an office/copy room now serves as the Jackson Center Inspiration Room, boasting over 400 square feet of space for smaller business meetings. The 17th Annual Moon Over Three Caves Dance was held September 17 at the former limestone quarry Three Caves. Nicknamed the Party of the Year, the Moon Dance benefits the land preservation work of Land Trust of North Alabama.

“This signature event has sold out for the past 11 years and we are so grateful for the strong community support,” said 2016 Chair Sally Warden. “Attendees believe that it is vital to preserve land and fresh water resources. And, when parents bring their adult children, we’ve a new generation enjoying the Moon Dance,” stated Co-Chair Dennis Keim.

With fare by Washington Square Catering, Kozmic Mama, featuring Carla Russell, graced the Three Caves stage. A silent auction raised funds for forest and wildlife habitat preservation and included special Rain Barrels PLUS items created by local artists. Major sponsors were Toyota Motor Manufacturing and Simple Helix.

The Rotary Club of Madison, Alabama hosted its 14th annual Parrots of the Caribbean, an evening of live music, food, and libations on August 27. Event proceeds benefited Rotary’s year-round projects like local student vocational, leadership an scholarship programs, Madison Public Library, and Boys and Girls Club of Triana. n

2nd Annual Black Tie Charity Ball

On August 13 the Rocket City Adjutant General’s Corps Regimental Association (RC AGCRA), the Legacy 4 Korean War Veteran’s Foundation and the Army Space Professional Association, Rocket City Chapter, came together to host the 2nd Annual Black Tie Charity Ball. The event raised over $12,000 for veterans at the local Floyd E. “Tut” Fann State Veterans Home, which offers first-rate senior living and care services for senior citizens.

In attendance were the most honored guests, 12 Veterans from the Tut Fann Veterans Home, who had served in WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and/or the Gulf War. n

American Wine Society National Tasting Project

The North Alabama Chapter of the American Wine Society (AWS) held its annual “National Tasting Project” tasting in September, hosted by members, Augie and Ann Hernandez, at their south Huntsville home. The AWS Educational Foundation provides annual scholarships to graduate students in enology and viticulture. The AWS is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the appreciation of wine through education. There are over 120 chapters nationwide, with five in the North Alabama area. n

Big Spring Crush 2016

The Big Spring Crush returned for a third year on September 24 in the Downtown City Park. The festival offered 150 wine labels for patrons to taste as well as local entertainment featuring The Winslow Davis Ensemble and The Wolves of Chernobyl. Food trucks offered wine-inspired fare plus a complimentary bread and cheese tent was on site. n

Huntsville Botanical Garden Throws Dining Fete

Huntsville Botanical Garden celebrated their 4th Annual Fresh from the Garden, a farm-to-table dining event on Friday, September 9 in the 4 Seasons Garden. Around 200 guests attended the fundraiser.

Carol Casey, Vice President of Communications for the Garden declared, “The luxury food and wine event was sold out weeks in advance!” The committee selected Chefs Chris McDonald and Andy Lowery, proprietors of The Bottle for the evening’s fare.

Both are avid gardeners and members of the HBG. Casey added, “They use local produce and support local farmers whenever possible, making them an excellent partner for this special tradition.” Features of the evening included a seafood bar with several types of caviar and raw oysters, a silent auction and wines donated from the collection of Dr. and Mrs. Williams Shergy.

Westin Reveals Plans for Element Huntsville

The Westin Huntsville held an event on August 18 to unveil plans for project to convert floors 7-11 into the upscale Element Huntsville, a 150- room facility.

The Element plans include an upscale vibe, focusing on environmental sustainability.

General Manager Mark Nelson revealed that 68 rooms will be suites that encompass full kitchens. “We hope this appeals to extended-stay travelers in Huntsville,” Nelson said.

Nelson predicts a population of guests who regularly visit Huntsville for work or projects will value a room with a kitchen, while enjoying the benefit of the varied dining options Bridge Street Towne Center has to offer. Also featuring complimentary daily breakfast, evening cocktail receptions and a marketplace with groceries available, Element Huntsville adds value in a myriad of ways.

The Westin will welcome Element Huntsville in January 2017. n

Dining with Gene Stallings Brought Big Benefits

500 guests gathered at the Von Braun Center’s East Hall on August 11 for the 6th Annual Dinner with Gene Stallings. The crowd included Alabama running back Siran Stacy and a special appearance by Big Al! The purpose of the event was to raise funds for His Way Recovery Center, a Christcentered residential recovery program for men struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. The meal was catered by the VBC with live dinner music provided by Soft Notes Combo. Event sponsor was WaveLink Inc.

The fundraiser kicked off a capital campaign for a new building allowing His Way to expand their Huntsville campus to 60 residents. The program is six-months long, and includes proven 12-step recovery materials, vocational assistance, life skills coaching, financial management training, and personal and group counseling. “Over 50 percent of His Way graduates are clean and sober today!” said Bill Neiland, Director of Business Relations for His Way.

Tie the Ribbons for Breast and Ovarian Cancer Research

HudsonAlpha celebrated its 8th year of Tie the Ribbons on September 22 at the Von Braun Center’s North Hall. The event is a fundraiser for breast and ovarian cancer research. This year’s event boasted 1250 attendees.

Special guest speakers included HudsonAlpha president Dr. Rick Myers and faculty members Dr. Sara Cooper and Dr. Kim Strong. Sponsoring the event were Rosie’s and I Heart Media.

“The community support for Tie the Ribbons is overwhelming and we are so grateful.

Funds raised at this event support our Breakthrough Breast Cancer genetic breast and ovarian cancer research team at HudsonAlpha. They are working on groundbreaking, lifesaving projects that we hope will guide us to better treatment and prevention of these cancers,” said Dr. Rick Myers, President and Science Director of the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology.

HudsonAlpha also announced that thanks to Redstone Federal Credit Union, they will carry on for a second year offering free breast, ovarian and other genetic cancer screening to 30-year-old women and men living in Madison, Limestone, Marshall, Jackson and Morgan counties. n
