Hello Huntsville!

I know we are all tired of the pandemic and all that comes with it. I personally have had both of my Pfizer shots and am feeling more confident about getting out and about. I hope you all make the right choice and vaccinate when you are able.

It will only help us put this mess behind us. Events are starting back up with the warmer weather. While they will be generally held outdoors in the interim, I am not complaining. We’ve been blessed with fresh air and beautiful weather.

The editorial theme of this issue is getting outdoors! I hope you enjoy and learn something from what we’ve put together in this editorial. We feature the park manager at Monte Sano State Park as well as a land steward from the Land Trust.

Both of these individuals are instrumental in helping us enjoy the beautiful outdoors we have surrounding our area. From the Black History Brunch to the Casino Night for the New Hope Children’s Clinic, we have been out and about covering the events for worthy causes. As things open back up, I hope you have the opportunity to safely attend these fundraising events and help play a part in the overall success of our wonderful community.

“This will be our first production since being shut down because of COVID-19,” said Phillip Otto, Artistic Director for Huntsville Ballet Company. The purpose of the fundraiser was to ensure the survival of the ballet through the pandemic.

The performance included the world premiere of “Big Spring Dreams,” an eclectic collection of vignettes of human emotion: love, inspiration, happiness and hope dedicated to the city of Huntsville and the community that supports the Huntsville Ballet.

“Big Spring Dreams” featured guest choreography by Gina Guerrera and Desmond Nunn. Guerrera serves on the faculty of Huntsville Ballet School and has been dancing and choreographing for over 20 years. Nunn is an Alabama native and former HBC principal dancer who is currently dance captain, ensemble swing and John Laurens/ Philip Hamilton cover in The First National Tour of “Hamilton, An American Musical.” Original sets were designed by artist Monica Yother whose work on behalf of the ballet has earned awards at local, regional, and national levels.

A Breath of Fresh Air: Spending the Day Outside in the Rocket City

Huntsville has earned the name “Rocket City.” The city has been eager to embrace its identity as the technology capital of Alabama. While there is no denying how important technology has been for the rapid growth of Huntsville, it makes it easy to overlook the fact that the city actually offers the best of both worlds: a bustling urban atmosphere plus some of most beautiful and entertaining opportunities to experience nature at its finest.

Technology is a glittering lure but being outside allows for people to be engaged on a level beyond flash. There is something about the great outdoors that makes the memories gained from a family camping trip or a neighborhood barbecue more nostalgic than other memories. They seep into the corners of our memory and pop back up when we yearn to revisit a time when things were simpler. We hope this guide will serve as a reminder that spending an enjoyable day outside in Huntsville is as easy now as it has ever been.

Land Trust of North Alabama One of most prominent ways to spend a day (or many) outside is to visit any of the Land Trust of North Alabama properties. The Land Trust exists only to protect, preserve and maintain some of the most beautiful lands in North Alabama so that the public can enjoy them.

Established in 1987 to protect the eastern slopes of Monte Sano from development, it is the oldest land trust in the state of Alabama. What started with 10 members in 1987 is now the most successful preservation and conservation resource in the state with more than 9,000 protected acres and 1,500 members.

The Land Trust currently offers more than 70 miles of walking trails for relaxing, exercising, and connecting with nature – at no cost. This summer is the perfect time to take the family to any of the seven public nature preserves in Madison County open dawn to dusk daily for hiking, biking, and outdoor recreation. Featuring guided hikes and outdoor adventures each spring and

Monte Sano: The Monte Sano Nature Reserve is the flagship reserve of the Land Trust of North Alabama. It is the iconic backdrop for downtown Huntsville. The name Monte Sano translates to “Mountain of Health,” in Spanish.

Since the late 1800s, visitors from across the United States have come to experience and enjoy Monte Sano’s fresh air, views and mineral springs. The nature preserve includes 1,100 acres with spectacular vistas from atop the mountain, especially when the fall leaves show off their colors. In the spring, native azaleas bloom along the 22 miles of hiking and biking trails. It offers trails of varying difficulty level that also connect to other trail networks managed by Burritt on the Mountain and Monte Sano State Park (separate from the land trust and operated by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.) Parking for the reserve is located at 2442 Bankhead Parkway NE.

you will find the visually striking venue that hosts these series of concerts. Despite its name, Three Caves is not actually a cave at all but a former limestone mine, originally known as Hermitage Quarry. The 800-seat outdoor venue provides one of the most unique concert experiences you will ever find. Concerts in the past have included acts such as Delta Rae, Moon Taxi, The SteelDrivers and the Legendary Muscle Shoals Review.

The venue has a comfortable year-round temperature of 55 degrees due to the wind from the cave openings.

As the sun starts to set and the lights bounce off and accentuate the quarry walls, you will immediately get the sense that you are in store for a truly special and beautiful musical experience.

Concerts have been scheduled for both Saturday, June 12 and Saturday, August 7. Tickets are $35-$45 for Land Trust Members and $45-$55 for non-members.

Every concert includes a variety of beer and wine options available to purchase as well.

Don’t miss • Wildflower Trail: A perfect hike for the whole family. This trail wraps around Fagan Creek and provides a majestic display of native wildflowers in the springtime.

• Old Railroad Bed Trail: Follow the path of former Monte Sano Railway, one of the country’s oldest and shortest-lived rail corridors. During this hike, you encounter multiple waterfalls and come across the original support columns of the stone bridge the railroad used to transport passengers in the 1800s.

• High Trail: A challenging trail for more experienced hikers, this trail leads through a small quarry and the remnants of the Monte Sano Hotel.

Hays Nature Preserve

Three Caves: If you are looking to for other ways to spend time outdoors, the Concerts at Three Caves Series is a perfect experience for all. Located two miles from downtown Huntsville, tucked inside a residential area,

The Hays Nature Preserve is one of Huntsville’s largest and most undeveloped parklands. This beautiful piece of land includes over ten miles of trails that wind and weave through bottomlands, swamps, and sloughs, suitable for hiking or mountain biking. Horses are also welcome on the northern trails. Bring the whole family

and explore hardwood forest, walk the fields and discover the wetlands. Wildlife abounds with deer, rabbits, raccoons, and resident and migratory birds; in fact, this natural area is an important part of the North Alabama Birding Trail.

It is especially great for kids due to its Terrame Natural Playground. This type of playground is developed using elements of nature instead of standard equipment.

Cathedral Caverns

Rocket City Trash Panda Games

Originally called Bat Cave, Cathedral Caverns was opened to the public the 1950's and later renamed because of its cathedral-like appearance. It was opened as a State Park in the summer of 2000. The cavern’s massive entrance holds the distinction as a possible world record for commercial caves. Inside the cavern are beautiful formations including Goliath, one of the largest stalagmites in the world; a “frozen” waterfall; and a large stalagmite forest.

Looking for something outdoors but don’t feel like getting in the dirt and mud? In 2021 America’s greatest pastime will make its return to the Rocket City with the inaugural season of the Trash Pandas baseball team.

Opening night for the minor league baseball team is set for Tuesday, May 11 against the Tennessee Smokies.

The overall schedule includes 120 total games – 60 each for home and away – as part of the new, eight-team Double-A South League.

This unique experience provides a more imaginative and creative type of play that encourages the kids to interact with their natural environment. A two-story fort complete with rock climbing, wooden seesaws, swinging bridge and a play kitchen are just some of the components that make up this attraction that will surely catch the attention of any child. Located at 7153 Hwy 431 S. Owens Cross Roads, Hays Nature Preserve is free for all to experience and any donations support Huntsville’s Green Team.

The new team comes with a new state-of-the-art facility at Toyota Field. The stadium, located in Madison, will accommodate 7,000-plus for games with a variety of seating options. Along with standard seating, fans of the team can use patio suites without fixed seating. It provides a more flexible experience with high-top tables and chairs than can be moved around.

Burritt on the Mountain Situated on a magnificent 167-acre site overlooking the city, Burritt on the Mountain is a place to explore the natural beauty of Round Top Mountain, learn about its ecology, revisit the lives of farmers from the 1800s, and tour Dr. William Henry Burritt’s unique 1938 mansion.

Burritt’s nature trails are perfect for hiking and connect to the Land Trust and Monte Sano State Park.

Hiking isn't the only activity though. The open-air museum includes some of the most beautiful facilities the area has to offer for weddings, meetings and other events. Some of the wonders you will find here include Dr. Burritt’s remarkable 14-room mansion preserved from the 1930s and the Historic Park which features restored farm buildings which interpret 19th century life in rural Alabama.

Don’t Miss: • Cocktails at The View: Every Wednesday through October from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Watch the sunset and enjoy a cocktail along with gourmet food items on the elevated overlook.

Huntsville Botanical Garden The 112-acre Huntsville Botanical Garden is open year-round and boasts an aquatic garden, wildflower and nature trail, numerous specialty gardens and plant collections. The 9,000 square foot Anderson Education Center contains the nation’s largest open-air butterfly house and is home to many other species of wildlife.

The Children’s Garden made of eight themed areas includes dinosaur, story book and pollywog gardens.

With seasonal festivals and exhibits galore, there’s always something “growing” on at The Garden.

Don’t Miss: • Peak Butterfly Season in the Purdy Butterfly House May 1 – September 30. This is the best time of the year to experience the immersive habitat that is home to over 1,000 brightly colored native butterflies, as well as turtles, frogs and fish.

After the original first season of the Trash Pandas was cancelled last year, this will surely be the most hyped outdoor entertainment opportunity of the year. Huntsville hasn’t seen baseball since the Stars left in 2014. The level of enthusiasm from the community has stayed strong throughout the delays with the team selling $2.5 million in merchandise since October of 2018.

Greene Street Market at Nativity

Hubert Family Farms

The Greene Street Market at Nativity is downtown Huntsville’s destination for fresh, locally grown vegetables, fruits, meat, and flowers. Beginning in May you can visit the market every Thursday to meet farmers with local produce, grass-fed and pasture-raised beef and pork, free range chickens and eggs.

Hubert Family Farms created quite the buzz this year as it was the only place in North Alabama to pick fresh tulips. The family farm located in New Market brought over 65 types of tulips and more than 200,000 bulbs directly from Holland. Families from all over the region have traveled to the farm to pick flowers, set up picnics and take in the atmosphere of the farm.

Though tulip season is ending, don’t forget about them when planning your outdoor entertainment this year!

They will be returning this summer with another new experience - “Pick Your Own Sunflowers.”

The farm has been in the family of owners Seth and Kaylee Hubert since Seth’s great-grandfather, George Hubert, bought a 78-acre plot of land in 1917. Since then, the Hubert family has turned those initial 78 acres into 2,000 acres of rented/owned land. n

Other features at Greene Street include freshly prepared meals, gourmet popsicles, traditionally made relishes, cheeses, preserves and breads. It is truly a multi-purposed destination in downtown Huntsville.

The outdoor market (located at the corner of Greene Street and Eustis Avenue) is open every Thursday through the last Thursday in October. Depending on the time of the year, the markets hours vary. The hours throughout the year are: 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. May – August; 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. September; 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. October.

The Market at Mid-City For a combination of outdoor entertainment and a day of shopping, the Market at Mid-City makes for a truly immersive experience. You can experience the innovative market every Sunday from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. until November 14th, making it the longestrunning market in the area. With over 40 vendors every week, it’s not just farmers and food growers you will find here. Around 30 percent of The Market’s vendors are artisans and non-food vendors that sell things like custom cutting boards, homemade soaps, beard oils and more. You’ll find this market off University Drive as one of the features of “The Camp.”

Rhythm, aptly named for the different types of musical performances hosted at the VBC, opened just as the COVID-19 pandemic was beginning in the U.S. “It was important to me to open on March 12th, and avoid opening on Friday the 13th,” remarked General Manager Stephen Ryberg. “Who knows how the year would've unfolded if we had waited another day!” The official opening came just days before Alabama Governor Kay Ivey ordered all indoor dining establishments to close their doors. “It hasn't been the year we had planned,” Ryberg continued. “But our team and the awesome community we serve rallied, and here we are, twelve months later, able to say our first year was a success!”

Lori Pence

Lori Pence is a Land Steward at the Land Trust of North Alabama. As a native of Madison County with a longtime appreciation of the outdoors, her work toward the Land Trust’s mission is vital to protect and maintain the area’s extensive natural spaces.

EVENT: What does a Land Steward do?

LP: A Land Steward is an ambassador for the Land Trust. I help manage 8,800 acres of land that is broken up into eight different preserves with 70 miles of trail. On a day-to-day basis, I’m educating visitors on our mission, which is to preserve North Alabama’s scenic, historic and ecological resources through conservation, advocacy, recreation and education.

I also manage trailheads, execute trail design and layout, and work with volunteers on projects.

EVENT: What inspired you to do this kind of work?

LP: I have always loved the outdoors. I’ve been a hiker for over 25 years. As a seventh-generation native of Madison County, I feel a deep stewardship to this area.

EVENT: What types of training have you undertaken to support your career as a land steward?

LP: I have taken courses for trail design and layout – sustainable building practices; rock work courses to build stairs, retaining walls and armoring washes (creating secure paths across waterways.) I’ve also taken chainsaw courses as well as wilderness first aid.

LP: I have many favorites, but I would say the best part is working with a small but amazing staff. Sharing the same passion for the outdoors is powerful.

The past four years of working with the Land Trust of North Alabama has allowed me to support a mission that’s dear to me. I love spending my days in the forest.

EVENT: Do you have a favorite story or memory?

LP: Over the last year, as we’ve all tried to navigate the pandemic, we've seen an influx of hikers, cyclists and runners on our properties. It's been very fulfilling to help provide an outlet among these chaotic times and watch people return to their love of nature.

EVENT: What do you love most about this area?

LP: We live in a impressive bio diverse area.

Helping to protect our forest with the flora and fauna that call it home is one the best feelings. n

Spotlight guided hikes, and programs. “Even if it’s not something structured, they’re out in the park, they’re talking to people, they’re telling them what they’re looking at, and identifying bugs, flowers,” she continued. “I think it’s such a big deal for the kids, it’s something that’s going to bring in a lot more traffic, as far as hiking clubs and field trips, for all ages, not just school-aged people.”

Despite any troubles looming outside its gates, Monte Sano has provided a scenic sanctuary for the community.

Although 2020 Monte Sano Art show took place as scheduled, the event ran a little differently than in previous years. In addition to the now-standard social distancing and mask-wearing mandates, the Art Show organizers eliminated situations where people could congregate in large groups, such as gathering under the pavilions for food or music. “It was spread out more and I know we had a smaller turnout, which was expected,” Lansdell said. “But it still was a major success.”

Emma Lansdell has a lot to be excited about. Monte Sano State Park has been in a state of metamorphosis since she took the helm as park manager in January 2020. If there’s anyone who is up to the challenge to usher the park through a series of upgrades and bring it into a new era, Lansdell is that person.

The Rogersville native got her first taste of the state park system through a summer job at Joe Wheeler State Park.

It was there that she worked the front desk at the Lodge during college breaks. During her time at the Lodge, she learned quite a bit while working under Kelly Ezell, the lodge manager. “I like to give her a lot of credit for being able to succeed and to be promoted because I learned a lot from her, she’s an incredible person,” said Lansdell.

Lansdell graduated in 2016 from the University of Alabama with a degree in Human Development with a concentration in Family Studies. “I was fresh out of my internship. I did it at Tuscaloosa’s One Place, a family resource center,” she said. “It was a really great experience, but I moved home with the intention of going back to school and seeing where it took me.”

Instead of graduate school, it took her to a job in the accounting office at Joe Wheeler State Park, her first full-time job with the state park system. After six months in the accounting office, Monte Sano State Park posted an opening for an assistant manager. Lansdell jumped at the opportunity and landed the role. Two years later, she was promoted to Park Manager.

Set on 2,140 acres, Monte Sano State Park has 14 cabins, 11 of those are the stone buildings erected by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Although there have been many upgrades over the years, such as running water, air, and heat, the original structures have been left unchanged. The three wood frame cabins were added in the 1970s.

There are also 89 dedicated campsites. A major electrical upgrade for the campground is in the works. Lansdell explained, “It’s hard for campers to run off 30 amps anymore because they are 50 feet long, have two air conditioners, and they have to have 50 amps.”

One of the biggest improvements made at Monte Sano in 2020 is the acceptance of credit cards as a payment option. Last August, the park went live with its Recreation Dynamics / USE Direct. So far, the new web-based system has been very successful at the front gate. “It’s incredible software, very user-friendly,” said Lansdell.

“It’s been a major help for us.”

Soon, Monte Sano will have a naturalist on staff.

“I think that’s going to impact people the most,” Lansdell said. The naturalist will oversee outdoor education,

Campground space is a rare commodity lately. For the entire month of March, Monte Sano was packed. The staggered spring breaks for local, in-state, as well as out-of-state students, kept the park bursting at the seams.

There were a lot of unknowns when COVID became the new reality. Once the business shutdowns started, the team at Monte Sano had no expectations of staying open.

“We had every single state surrounding us and the whole country closing parks,” said Lansdell. “I was very thankful we could come to work every day.”

Amid the chaos, 2020 sped by in a blink of an eye.

The pandemic came with its own setbacks, but Lansdell and her team remained undaunted. “It’s been a very pleasant year, even with COVID,” she said. “We never had to close. We did everything we could for sanitizing the cabins, the office, the computer equipment we used.

There was definitely a lot of planning and stress behind the scenes.”

“That’s what so great about being here at Monte Sano,” said Lansdell. “We all have each other’s backs and it’s all about the customer. The customer is the top priority.” n

Her new role as manager was fraught with obstacles, so she dug in and got busy. “The biggest thing was that nothing should make an impact on the guests,” said Lansdell. “It was definitely challenging, but we rolled with the punches.”

“I think that in the near future, what the guest is going to notice for Monte Sano is lots of improvements for overnight lodging,” she said. “We have a lot of plans for the cabins, lots of updates where it’s going to make it more comfortable.”

Photos by Steve Babin In 2021 the Von Brewksi Festival looked a bit different. But there was still plenty of beer on tap, live music and of course premade pretzel necklaces.

Instead of the usual one-day event in the South Hall, Sir Von Brewski donned his helmet and rocketed his brew-ship to Mars (Music Hall) for four separate events limited to 200 guests for social distancing purposes, with different solo artists performing at each event.

Sample pours were served in disposable cups to avoid cross contamination, but guests still received their souvenir sampling cup when leaving. With more than 70 taps including local, regional and international brews, attendees could visit the three bars in the music hall. A cash bar featured drinks for non-beer drinkers plus brats, pretzels, and loaded nachos for purchase. n

Warmer weather brings with it plenty of outdoor activities and sporting events. The Huntsville Championship is being played at The Ledges through May 2. Golfers are vying for a win and their shot at the PGA tour. It was great to see A Taste of Panoply back in Big Spring International Park. The arts are vital to our quality of life and Panoply is always a fantastic showcase of local and regional talent. The Rocket City Trash Pandas are playing their inaugural season at Toyota Field in Town Madison. Catch AA baseball at its finest and cheer for the Trash Pandas in their beautiful new stadium.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is holding Space Camp this summer with campers from across the nation filling all of the spots in every session available in this world famous program. Reservations are being accepted for 2022, which will include international campers.

Head out to the Intuitive Planetarium for one of their fantastic Friday night shows and don’t miss Dare to Explore: Milestones to Mars, which will be ending in May. The Huntsville Botanical Garden is alive with flora and fauna! Tweetsville focuses on the role of birds in our ecosystem and the Purdy Butterfly House highlights the lifecycle of some of our other winged friends, the butterflies. Summer is the perfect time to immerse yourself in nature and the Huntsville Botanical Garden is a great place to do it.

Burritt on the Mountain’s GeoQuest is a great family-friendly activity that uses clues and GPS technology to lead you on a hunt to collect sets of Quest Cards. Once you find all of the cards for all four adventures, you can enter a monthly drawing for a free family membership.

Baptizing – Huntsville Big Spring – 1895

BIG SPRING – HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA On a sunny day, locals and visitors from around the world can be found enjoying the natural beauty around Big Spring in downtown Huntsville. If you have been one of them, did you ever think of all those who had been in that spot? Oh, to be a time traveler to see all that had happened around this special place!

Under the limestone cliff below the large Greek Revival Building on West Side of Court House Square, water from Big Spring flows from the underground reservoir and caves that lie deep in the ground below Huntsville.

This source of water likely attracted people and creatures in prehistoric times, just as it did the 19th century settlers who founded Huntsville.

Before the first permanent settler, Revolutionary War veteran John Hunt, moved south from Tennessee and built his two-room log cabin on land adjacent to Big Spring in 1805, the water source was used by two native American tribes, the Cherokees and Chickasaws. “Hunt’s Spring” (Huntsville) and Madison County were part of the Mississippi Territory in 1809 when government land sales began in Nashville. These sales enabled residents to legally own land. Wealthy planter Leroy Pope paid $23 an acre, and bought a large acreage including the site of Hunt’s cabin and the Big Spring.

to facilitate the transportation of cotton which was very difficult to transport over the rough roads to the river.

By 1823, innovative Huntsvillians used cedar pipes to carry the water from Big Spring to a reservoir on the Courthouse Square. A pump house was put on site to help in carrying the water. The Big Spring provided the main source of water for Huntsville until 1957. Use of Big Spring water was discontinued in in the 1960’s when replaced with water from the Tennessee River.

Leroy Pope’s son, William H. Pope, donated the Big Spring to Huntsville in 1842 for a very small sum (some say only $1) – provided his heirs received water free and the space around Big Spring be open to the public.

Some researchers have said that revenue from water sales was the largest source of income for the city’s General Fund for many years.

The Big Spring area was a favorite picnic and meeting spot for much of the 20th century. The park was enlarged and expanded to the west in the second part of the 20th century. During the 1960’s, many new residents and international visitors came to Huntsville, the “Rocket City,” as a result of the U.S. race to the moon powered by rockets made at Huntsville’s Marshall Space Flight Center. The city renamed the park “Big Spring International Park” and several countries gave gifts to the park.

At that time, a new vision emerged that everything in Huntsville should look “modern” and along with it was the vision to have a “passive park”. Benches were removed. White globe lanterns were at the top of every lamp post.

Fast forward in time and Huntsville’s history began to be appreciated. The modern globe lanterns were replaced with lighting more harmonious with the adjacent historic district. Benches came back. The 1900 “Little Lion” statue was reinstalled in 1995. People were encouraged to visit the park. Concerts became frequent events with local and visiting musicians.

Visitors were treated to the best of old and new, blended together in a welcoming public space.

John Hunt moved on and historians are still searching that history. However, his name was carried to Texas by Pleasant and Ephraim Gray who founded Huntsville, Texas, in 1835 or 1836. They named their Indian trading post “Huntsville” for the Gray family’s former hometown, Huntsville, Alabama.

Construction on the Indian Creek Canal from Big Spring to the Tennessee River started in 1820 and was completed in 1831. The purpose of this first canal in Alabama was

still active today, in 2021. It is the oldest AfricanAmerican congregation in Alabama and one of the oldest African-American congregations in the United States. In 1895, its church building site was on Williams Street near the Big Spring.

The Big Spring was used for Christian Baptism. There is a well-known 1895 photo of a baptism of members of St. Bartley’s Primitive Baptist Church. The historic African-American church was founded in 1820 and is
