Spring has certainly sprung here in the Tennessee Valley. Pollen-laden cars traveling the busy roadways have been commonplace. Even with sinus issues, this time of year is still the most beautiful time to me. After being stove-up all winter, being outdoors enjoying the surroundings we have here in Huntsville is refreshing. Currently, in the midst of busy times, we’ve been covering some of the many client and non-profit events that have taken place over the past few months. From the Dog Ball benefiting the Greater Huntsville Humane Society, The Von Brewski Beer Festival, offering the unique opportunity to taste the hops from breweries near and far, to the more formal AKA Debutante Ball and the Gothic Guild’s Victorian Cotillion, we’ve been out and about snapping photos of familiar faces as well as new ones. EVENT has two new photographers who have joined our team, Jessa Harris and Stephanie E. Jennings, I am excited to see the event photography they are bringing to the table. Hello Huntsville! The early summer sunshine is brightening up the sky and my spirits. As the kids count down the days until school is out, I find myself nostalgic for the simple summers of my youth – the long days of riding bikes and romping around the woods. Best of all, my family would hop in the 1977 Buick LeSabre and hit the road, often with no particular destination in mind. My brother and I were eager to go on those adventures with my parents in a way that my children can’t grasp, even though we usually found ourselves in the booth of a Waffle House, my dad’s road-trip-favorite, but not ours – not then.

Jennings The Huntsville Museum celebrated one of three major events of 28th Annual Gala with the Black Tie Dinner and Live Auction, where 250 guests enjoyed a seated dinner catered by Chef James Boyce. During dinner, a live auction offered up fine art, exciting trips and unique treasures. Proceeds from the Black Tie Dinner and Live Auction directly benefitted the Huntsville Museum of Art. Gala is the Museum’s largest fundraiser, with well over $4 million raised in support of the Museum throughout its 28-year history. The 28th Annual Gala consisted of three separate events which each offered unique cultural activities to attract a variety of patrons, both young and old. These three events were tied together by the month-long Gala Art Exhibition which featured artist Karen Weihs. n continued on page 24

The featured artist mingled with the event’s 350 guests, live music was performed by Shimmer and hors d’oeuvres were provided by Chef Narvell. The silent auction included fine art by top artists from around the country, along with various trips and treasures. “Our Cocktail Party and Silent Auction is the perfect opportunity for those who are looking to expand or begin their own art collections. The Dinner Dance is the culmination of the events that make up the Victorian Cotillion Club, a program sponsored by the Gothic Guild. Beautiful decorations were created by members of the Gothic Guild with designs by InBloom. Entertainment was provided by the Craig Duncan Orchestra. Members of the Victorian Cotillion Club are young ladies at least 15 years old and enrolled as sophomores in a school in Madison County, with a good academic record and demonstration of leadership. They are given five weeks of instruction emphasizing the timeless social graces that continue to befit today’s lifestyle.

The EarlyWorks Family of Museums features loads of adventure with three museums: The EarlyWorks Children’s Museum is the South’s largest hands-on history museum. Kids can hear stories from the Talking Tree, play a tune on the giant-sized instruments at the Alabama bandstand, explore a 46-foot Keelboat, trade wares at the General Store and try on 1800’s clothing in the federal house. Pre-schoolers will enjoy exploring a touch-and-learn area which includes a garden, grocery store, water-table tree house and even a cow to milk. At the Historic Huntsville Depot, visitors hear the rattle of the tracks and the engineer’s whistle as they experience life on the rails in 1860. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Depot served as the local passenger house and the corporate offices for the eastern division of the Memphis & Charleston Railroad. An active passenger station until 1968, the original depot building stands as a symbol of Huntsville’s transportation history and city growth.
Feature Alabama Constitution Hall Historic Park & Museum transports guests back to 1819, when forty-four delegates of the constitutional convention gathered in a vacant cabinet shop to organize Alabama as the 22nd state. John Boardman’s print shop, Clement Comer Clay’s law office, the Federal Land Surveyor’s office, a post office and sheriff Stephen Neal’s residence surround that cabinet shop. Today, the shade trees watch over a proud living village that captures Alabama’s history and spirit.

The Ave Maria Grotto is home to the humble labor of Brother Joseph Zoettl, a Benedictine monk of St. Bernard Abbey. Originally from Bavaria-Germany, the young Zoettl traveled America to pursue monastic life at Alabama’s only Benedictine Abbey – and eventually left the abbey its greatest legacy. Since 1934, people from around the world visit to see famous parts of the world in miniature, from Monteserrat to St. Peter’s Basilica. The former abbey quarry is now the 4-acre park that the Grotto and surrounding miniatures rest upon.
Lake Guntersville Resort State Park promises to satisfy, whether visitors are looking for a resort style retreat or an outdoor adventure in the park’s 6,000 acres of natural woodlands. During the winter, the park is the nesting ground of the American bald eagle and offers eagle awareness programs. Among other offerings are an 18-hole championship golf course, a beach complex, an outdoor nature center, fishing in Alabama’s largest lake, 36 miles of hiking and biking trails, extensive campgrounds, weekly guided hikes and a day-use area.

W.C. Handy, the Father of the Blues, was born in Florence in 1873 in a simple cabin that today houses a large collection of his personal papers, memorabilia and artifacts. The museum invites visitors to, “Feel the blues down to your toes standing next to the very piano that shook with St. Louis Blues for the first time; see his hand-written sheets of music-originals of many of his tunes.”
The Alabama Music Hall of Fame was created with a mandate to honor Alabama’s great music achievers and to build a facility in which to showcase these talented individuals and their accomplishments. Inductees include Nat King Cole, Hank Williams, Tammy Wynette and Lionel Richie. Since its inception and construction, thousands of tourists, school children, historians and music fans have toured the facility to see, hear and learn of the many contributions Alabamians made to music.

The land (bought for 25 cents an acre in 1916) where the Lodge and Saloon sit began as a hog pen. Later, the family created Seven Springs Lodge that includes a main lodge, cabins and campgrounds. During construction, workers found a rattlesnake den a distance from the shelter, giving the saloon its name. Ivy Green is white clapboard home built in 1820 by Helen Keller’s grandparents. The estate contains the cottage where Keller was born. The home and museum room are decorated with much of the original furniture of the Keller family. Each is highlighted by hundreds of Miss Keller’s personal mementos, books and gifts from her lifetime of travel and lectures for the betterment of the world’s blind and deaf-blind. Of particular note is her complete library of Braille books and her original Braille typewriter. Thousands gather for the week-long Helen Keller Festival each June, and for the epic drama The Miracle Worker, that’s performed each June and July.

The park even boasts a rustic wedding chapel. -The Legend of Noccalula, as written by Mathilde Bilbro, holds that Noccalula, a Native-American princess, was to be forced into an arranged marriage by her father, despite her love for another. It is said that on her wedding day she slipped away and made the leap that ended her life. Heartbroken, the remorseful father gave the great cascade his daughter’s name. Since that day the waterfall has been called Noccalula. n
Since the doors first opened in 1970, Unclaimed Baggage Center has grown to become one of Alabama’s top tourist attractions. Photos by Steve Babin The Greater Huntsville Humane Society hosted the annual Dog Ball at the Von Braun Center South Hall on February 2. This year’s event, entitled Raise the Woof, marked the event’s 30th anniversary. The GHHS presented 50 Very Important Dogs from the community – with some available for adoption. A silent action offering a variety of dog-related items was followed by a live auction that spotlighted two fire hydrants (themed for Alabama and Auburn fans) painted by local artists plus an opportunity to win tickets to the 2020 Westminster Dog Show and a VISA card for trip expenses.

John Kvach Dr. John F. Kvach serves as Vice President of Liberty Learning Foundation. Previously, Dr. Kvach spent ten years as Associate Professor of Southern History at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He has authored two books and many articles on various historical subjects. Dr. Kvach serves on numerous local and statewide boards including the Alabama Humanities Foundation and the Alabama Bicentennial Committee. EVENT: When did your passion for history begin? JK: I’ve loved history my entire life. I remember at 8 years old, sitting on my grandfather’s knee, and he asked me, “What do you want to do with your life?” I said, “I want to be a history professor.” He laughed and said, “No really, what do you want to do?” “I want to be a history professor.” I guess I got the last laugh! History is about getting connected and engaged with people and helping them tell their stories. People are hungry for their past, their context in the world, and to understand where they came from. EVENT: You’re not a Huntsville native. When did you come here? JK: I was born in Maryland. I moved to Huntsville in 2008 [for the History Professor position at University of Alabama - Huntsville] and I’ve never been made to feel an outsider. I give about 40 to 50 talks a year, and one thing I like to tell people is that I wasn’t born in Alabama, but I got here as quickly as I could. EVENT: How did you approach teaching your students? JK: When I co-authored the pictorial book of Huntsville [Images of America – Huntsville] in 2013, my goal was to take students out of the classroom. History is not all about dates - I never asked my students to recite dates; I can go to Google for that. Writing history is a process of telling someone else’s story. I taught my students that when you’re writing about people, you need to be truthful, authentic and empathetic. EVENT: You no longer work for UAH. What are you up to now? JK: I left UAH last July and joined the Liberty Learning Foundation, which is about teaching civics, history, financial literacy and digital citizenship to children. I find this more fulfilling than teaching history. EVENT: You’re also involved with the Stovehouse development on Governor’s Drive. JK: The developers of Stovehouse wanted to save it, and preserve its history. I do “special assignments” for Stovehouse community engagement. Stovehouse is about piecing history together. It is mixing the old and the new. It has a hipster, stark vibe in a blue-collar place. We were able to obtain old photographs, and we’ll have them enlarged so that people can see what it once looked like. The Stovehouse area is being branded as the West Side – not a “place,” but more a way of thinking. It’s sensitive to the people who lived there. We want to show people that Huntsville is more than just rockets.

On February 22, 2019, Epsilon Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority hosted its 61st Annual Debutante Presentation and Ball in the North Hall of the Von Braun Center. More than 900 guests enjoyed the evening, themed, “Majestic Memories, Exemplifying Excellence.” Chapter President, Dr. Cheryl Davis welcomed debutantes, escorts, parents, special guests and friends. She also introduced Dr. Terrance Vickerstaff and Ms. Erica Washington to present the 33 honorees. The Debutante Presentation and Ball culminated the Debutante Season which consisted of training sessions, social graces workshops, community service projects, the Hobby Talent Showcase and a multi-media contest. Following the presentation, the debutantes and their escorts performed the traditional cotillion dance. A toast was given by City Councilman Devyn Keith. William Hampton has a passion for Huntsville history. He is not only the administrator of the popular Facebook site, Huntsville Revisited, but he is active in multiple organizations and events. He is excited to be involved in the planning of events for the Alabama Bicentennial, showcasing African-American history. EVENT: The Huntsville Revisited Facebook site has been going strong for how long? Why do you think it is so popular? WH: It was started in 2008 – so, 11 years. People love sharing and telling stories of their ancestors. They are proud of the photos in their collections, and the Huntsville Revisited site is an opportunity to share them. EVENT: How did you become so interested in local history? WH: I’ve always been interested in history, even when I was a little boy. My great-grandparents John Lewis Hampton and Bessie Bishop Hampton, and my grandparents Lucille and George, would talk about their experiences. It opened my mind! They’d sit on the front porch and tell stories. I’d go play, and come back and listen to them, go play, and come back again. So, most of my history was oral. Later in high school, I decided I would write a book about Huntsville’s history. That was probably the precursor to the Huntsville Revisited site. But I put it on hold because I was going to focus my attention on being a rock star! [Laughed] We moved 11 times all over the community, and I went to eight different schools. We were very poor. We lived in all areas of Huntsville. [Many Huntsville natives] never went to other parts of the city, but my childhood experiences gave me a desire to just cruise around Huntsville and Madison County and learn about it. I loved conversations with old people and learning their stories.
Spotlight On June 16th, we will hold “A Festival of Voices.” Over 60 actors in period costume will participate, portraying many notable African Americans with ties to Huntsville, such as Dred Scott, William Hooper Councill, Will Mastin, who was an entertainer who helped launch Sammy Davis Jr.’s career, and Paschal Conley, a noted 10th Calvary Buffalo Soldier. We’ll have a re-enactment of the Buffalo Soldiers’ encampment in Huntsville. Since this date is close to the June 19, 1865 date, on which enslaved African Americans in Texas were told that they had been freed, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, we’ll have a re-enactment of that. These activities will be held at the Huntsville Depot and Roundhouse grounds on Church Street. This portion of Church Street was once a thriving black business district. It had restaurants, bakeries, The Princess Movie Theater, dry cleaners, and churches. It had a service station, barber and beauty shops, doctor’s offices, a hat shop, and a newspaper called The Huntsville Mirror. It was a vibrant and fun place. EVENT: You sound like a very busy man! WH: I used to be very busy, but I have learned to balance my time. I want to be effective and productive. I’ve scaled down to be both. EVENT: What would you like people to know about you? WH: I love Huntsville history! It’s important for us to share stories. When I talk to children, I encourage them to listen to their family’s stories and to video them. One of my favorite songs is “Generations” by Sara Groves. My favorite line is “Generations will reap what I sow / I can pass on a curse or a blessing / To those I will never know.” My goal is to pass on a blessing. n

My twins, when they were 8-9 years old, were my first two admins when I launched the Huntsville Revisited page. They helped daddy administer it. They’d pull up the site and monitor the friend requests, and we’d discuss them on the phone while I was at work. My daughter, at 17 years old, was the first to do the Ancestry DNA test. My mother is still alive, and I am trying to get her to take it. EVENT: You’re involved in a lot of different organizations. Is there one that holds a special place in your heart? WH: Well, they all do. But the Scottsboro Boys Museum especially does. I was part of the process that caused Governor Bentley to sign the Scottsboro Boys Act into law. [It exonerated the nine black men unjustly accused of rape in 1931.] I was there when he signed it. EVENT: You’re also helping to plan many events here to celebrate the Alabama Bicentennial. WH: Yes, we have many activities planned. On June 15th, we’ll have a re-enactment of the 1885 St. Bartley Primitive Baptist Church baptism at Big Spring in downtown Huntsville.

Photos by Steve Babin The Junior League of Huntsville traveled back in time to the 1920s for their inaugural Book Ball. This year’s theme was The Great Gatsby and it was a swingin’ soiree. The event was held on March 2 at The Grand Hall in EarlyWorks Museum. Party-goers enjoyed a night of delicious food by Mason Dixon Catering, and dancing to tunes performed by Seducing Alice. It was the bee’s knees and a night that no one will soon forget! All proceeds from The Book Ball will be used to fund The Junior League of Huntsville’s Community Projects, such as The Butterfly Project and One-on-One. The Butterfly Project provides free prom dresses to deserving high school girls; and One-on-One helps at-risk youths with reading while keeping it fun. Trace Barnett is the founder of The Bitter Socialite – a culinary and lifestyle blog; the author of Tracing Roots; and a finalist on The Next Food Network Star and Food Network’s Comeback Kitchen. Barnett delivered a unique experience for guests by involving himself in the planning of the luncheon, ranging from providing recipes for the welcome cocktail and menu to aiding in the design of the tablescapes. Around 200 guests lunched on fare from Lyn’s Gracious Goodness.

Curtis was joined by rising country music star Garrett Miles, an Alabama native who gained fame on American Idol. Ginger Harper served as the Chair for the event. The 21st annual Irish Evening was held March 15 at the Historic Huntsville Depot Roundhouse to raise funds in support of United Cerebral Palsy of Huntsville and Tennessee Valley. The 400 guests included volunteers from Accounting & Financial Women’s Alliance, Dixie Derby Girls and UAH ATOs. Local eateries donated fare including: Keegan’s Public House; Holiday Inn Research Park; Chupper Time Catering; Regale Cupcakery; Bubba’s Silver Spoon Catering and Jackson Center; while Church Street Wine Shoppe, Old Black Bear Brewing and Chambers Bottling Company joined forces to donate beverages. Huntsville Achievement School Volunteers helped make the event sparkle with St. Patrick’s Day-inspired décor. Black Market Haggis and Irish step dancers from Fitness Arts Center entertained, along with fun and games provided by the Irish Society of North Alabama. Presenting sponsor was Redstone Federal Credit Union, with other sponsors including Durham Orthodontics and COLSA Corporation.

WhistleStop Weekend will have the historic Huntsville Depot jamming to some awesome tunes and smelling the smoke from the delicious barbecue cooking in the air on May 3 and 4. Modern American Miss For the first time, Huntsville will be the home of its first state pageant, Modern American Miss – a new pageant system established in 2017 open to ages 7-30. State director, Riley Gann, chose Huntsville to host because of its small town feel while being one of the fastest growing cities. Gann will be looking for sponsoring businesses to contribute both towards prize packages as well as the pageant’s expenses. Audi Launches Select 2019 Models

Photos by Steve Babin On rainy Thursday evening in February, Audi Huntsville kicked off some of its new 2019 model line with Huntsville Audi fans who came out to support the event at the Huntsville Museum of Art. The group extended appreciation to all those who attended. “We are so excited for 2019 and this new Audi line-up,” said Megan McCahey, Marketing and Vehicle Acquisition Director. “If you missed this wonderful evening, we invite you to come to our showroom to take a look and for a test drive to experience art in motion. One of our new signature pieces is that of the first-ever Audi Q8, a new staple in our community, and we couldn’t be more excited to have the it added to the Audi family.” n
