Hello Huntsville!

Welcome to our annual Wedding Issue. As I write this letter, we are in the midst of a winter storm warning with anticipation of icy roads and numerous business closings. Less than a week ago we had 70-degree weather in February!

What crazy times we are in.

We are still covering events throughout the area. You’ll find instead of the Margarita Ball this year was a golf tournament where folks turned out to continue the mission of providing toys for children in need. The opening of Stella’s Elixir Lounge, located right next to Moe’s downtown, provided an ambience not to be missed. BMW and the Huntsville Hospital Foundation teamed up and safely held the annual BMW Brunch, and the Huntsville Museum of Art carried on with its weekly $5 After 5 events. People in our community have continued to make good decisions during the pandemic, whether providing care and safety for guests or postponing events until better weather or perhaps more widespread vaccinations.

Regardless, many of the nonprofits have continued to receive charitable contributions in the wake of the situation we have all been facing.

I hope you continue to enjoy looking through the event photography and the editorials included, such as the weddings from both parties featured.

This issue’s Spotlight is a fascinating story of Hank Isenberg, and Ashley Ramirez of Mason Dixon Bakery puts on a show in the Centerstage.

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here to witness Huntsville EVENT’S annual wedding issue!

While the pandemic has affected the size and timing of the celebrations, it can’t dim the excitement couples anticipate when saying “I do.” In this issue, we feature two long-time couples who share the details of their joyful wedding stories. Two more wedding-related editorials give information about bridal fashions and contact-free wedding-gift shopping right here in Huntsville.

We shine our spotlight on Hank Isenberg, a veteran and business owner who has instilled a culture of giving back into his company, IronMountain Solutions. At Centerstage is restauranteur, gluten-free baker and cookbook author Ashley Ramirez, PhD., who has realized her dream of creating a place where people with food allergies and dietary restrictions can indulge worry free.

Even through a global pandemic, nonprofit organizations have found new and creative ways to raise funds and continue to support those less fortunate.

Galaxy of Lights – Making Holiday Magic for 25 Years Photos by Steve Babin In celebration of the 25th Anniversary Season of Galaxy of Lights, this year’s VIP Preview Night encouraged guests to bring their family members and experience the magic of Galaxy together on a walk through the lights. BMW Brunch Goes Drive-Through for 2020 PEOPLE • PLACES • PARTIES

Photos by Steve Babin Huntsville Hospital Foundation’s longest-running fundraiser took a creative approach this year, featuring a drive-through brunch at Century BMW on November 22.

The 35th annual BMW Brunch raised a record $81,343 in net proceeds, which will provide comfort and support to gynecologic oncology patients through the new Lee Coggins Patient Care Fund at HHF. More than 450 guests supported the cause and picked up a special meal catered by Cotton Row. The Foundation offered a special thank you to Silver Sponsors Century BMW, Robins & Morton and Twickenham Advisors for their generous support. n

The Wedding of Haley & Grayson Couch The Story We first met when we were two years old and Grayson’s dad was building our house. We went to the same school but didn’t become friends until we were in the same friend group in ninth grade. We were friends for about two years before we started dating. There was a dance coming up where the girls ask the guys, so I had decided to ask Grayson and we just hit it off from there. He asked me on an official date after the dance, and we have been together since. We ended up going to different colleges in Alabama and were long distance for six years visiting each other when we could.

We stayed close and grew up together during that time even though we were hours apart.

The Engagement I had just finished up my first semester of graduate school and Grayson wanted to do a nice dinner but didn’t give any details for the night. I figured it was just a dinner to celebrate finishing up the semester and had no idea what was to come of the night. It was in December of 2017, so we went to dinner and walked around the tinsel trail in downtown.

As we were coming up the steps, Grayson proposed, and I saw all my family and friends at the top of the steps afterwards. I was absolutely in shock and was thrilled.

The Pandemic Our original wedding date was April 25, 2020. We were six weeks our from our big day when COVID was on the news as being in other countries, but within days had taken over [here] and things were closing down everywhere. We had been engaged for about 2.5 years after waiting for the perfect time where I would be out of school. We wanted the day to be what we had planned, so we decided to postpone the wedding to the end of August. We have big families of more

than 10 with just parents and siblings, so we did not end up getting married in April as intended. It was a lot to process rescheduling a wedding within an hour with the help of my mom and our wedding coordinator. As the summer went on and we gained more knowledge of what was going on in the world of COVID, we ended up having to decrease our wedding size and make changes that would accommodate our guests, as well as ensure that everyone would be safe.

Although it was stressful at the time, it’s part of our story, and we had the absolute best wedding day in August that made it all worth it!

The Wedding Day We got married at Burritt on the Mountain on Friday, August 28, 2020. We had our family, wedding party, and close friends attend. We had a rehearsal dinner/party at the Monte Sano Lodge the night prior to begin the festivities.

The ceremony was planned to be outside with the reception as an inside-outside event. The week of the wedding, Hurricane Sandy made an appearance with the residual rain expected in Huntsville on our wedding date. It’s difficult to tell with Alabama weather what will actually happen until the day of, so we held out hope, but it ended up raining. It was overcast during the day, which made the pictures turn out perfect. We were thinking that maybe the rain would hold off, but we decided to change the ceremony inside. A while back, we may have cared about that, but after everything, we were just happy to get married and didn’t care if it was inside or outside. It ended up pouring rain during the ceremony but made for a clear night during the reception. It was a beautiful day, and we had the best time finally getting married with the closest people supporting and celebrating with us.

The Wedding of Hannah & Jason Charles

The Story We met through a mutual friend in high school – who was the best man in our wedding. I was at this friend’s house when I was 16, and Jason came around the corner. I will never forget how quickly he swept me off my feet. I looked around the room and saw a soccer ball and decided to use that as my icebreaker – a decision I would soon regret. With all the confidence in the world I said, “I bet I can beat you in soccer!” Little did I know he played varsity for his school’s soccer team. I remember my friends telling my mom that there was just a connection between us. They were right.

We tell people we have loved each other much longer than we have been officially together. At 17, Jason wanted to be a young boy and not commit, he was my first heartbreak.

But he never dated another girl after me. I eventually went off to college in Birmingham. We kept in touch and stayed friends but still ended our late-night chats with I love you’s and I miss you’s. By my sophomore year of college, I got a job offer that would relocate me to Orlando. My first phone call was to Jason. He has always been my first phone call.

I asked him “What are we going to do? Orlando is far.”

He responded without hesitation, “I’m coming with you.”

We have been inseparable ever since.

The Engagement We knew we wanted to get married but the timing wasn’t right. When we moved back from Florida our plan was to buy a house together. I moved in with my parents and he moved in with his grandmother to save up. We still got to see each other every day but it was tough. We have never been able to keep anything from each other, so a secret engagement was out of the question. Three days before my birthday, Jason and I were on the phone both venting about how rough of a day we had. I said, “Can we just get engaged already?” He picked me up and we bought a ring. The ring is a Neil Lane gold square cushion, modeled after the Eiffel Tower. It is breathtaking.

The Pandemic About two months before the wedding (a week after the deadline to send invites) my planner sat me down and said we might need to think about rescheduling. We rented the art museum and they had restrictions on the amount of people allowed in the rooms. We had plans for a family, and we knew that rescheduling would interfere with what we wanted to do with our lives. I lowered our guest count, we supplied hand sanitizer and masks. All the staff working wore masks and we encouraged a 6-foot distance.

The Mishap I spent countless hours on the invitations. I sent out 100 invitations with a wax seal stamped one by one – it took days. I only had one stamp and it had to be put on ice after every press. I gave them to Jason to mail. Unbeknownst to me, he left that box in his car in the middle of June.

So, what happened to my wax seals? Yeah, they melted. I remember standing in our kitchen laughing but repeating, “This isn’t funny. This can’t be funny.” All 100 invites went out messy and destroyed. But I had to laugh so I didn’t cry.

lived on through recipes, magnets, and many humorous stories. Her bible is filled with pressed flowers, baby photos, and newspaper clippings with recipes written on the back. That morning I read from it my favorite verse.

Corinthians 13:13 – “And now these three remain faith, hope, and love, but the greatest of these is love.”

After we were pronounced husband and wife, we enjoyed a private dinner with the whole family. As we took pictures, the guests enjoyed cocktails and art viewing.

Once we were announced the party really started. We had craps and roulette tables and rented club-like lounging so people could sit and have a photo op. We planned the food to be what you crave after a late-night out: a hot sauce fountain with wings, onion rings, mini tacos, donuts, a popcorn bar, mini hamburgers and fried mac and cheese balls.

The Gift A special gift I received came from my mom. Growing up we had family dinners every night – with no phones, no TV, nothing but family and food. A special family dish we had was beef tips and “daddy noodles” (homemade by my dad.) This meal was served in a big red Dutch oven and there were never any leftovers. My mom gifted me my own red Dutch oven along with the tools to make noodles.

I know it seems silly for cooking utensils to mean so much to me, but those family dinners were my everything while growing up. We never missed family dinner. Now I can cook the same meal with the same tools and love for my little family. I pray they enjoy the time spent around that Dutch oven as much as I did.

At press time, the couple is expecting their first child.

The Wedding Before our first look we were both so nervous. Jason was crying before I even made it out there to him. As soon as I saw him, I was filled with the same emotion as the first time I ever laid eyes on him: an instant calm and excitement for our future. He gave me something blue which was a sapphire stone surrounded by diamonds set on a gold band to match my engagement ring.

Our ceremony was private on one of the balconies. My mom officiated the wedding using the same bible verses she taught me as a girl when I was first learning to love. She spoke the most beautiful words that my dad undoubtedly helped her craft.

The bible used in our ceremony was my great-grandmother’s. She passed when I was younger, but she has

Photos by Steve Babin Huntsville’s newest rooftop cocktail lounge kicked off its official opening on December 15 at their location at 127 Holmes Avenue. Around 300 attended the event, including guests from Huntsville EVENT Magazine, Downtown Huntsville Inc., as well as owners Angela Panzica and Bill Read. Guests showed off their glitz and glam while enjoying classic cocktails, old-Hollywood style.

The evening began with a ribbon cutting followed by a champagne toast, then at 7 p.m. the red-carpet affair began. People came dressed to impress for the paparazzi, which was provided by Sigh Photo. Flowers and décor were by Corrie Spearing at 333 Designs, with entertainment provided by Justin Blankenship on guitar.

Panzica said, “We have been absolutely humbled by the support we have received from the community - the other local downtown businesses, the city, and the people from near and far who have visited our establishment. People are always asking me what it was like to open a new business in 2020. I truly believe Huntsville is a special place, and without the encouragement from the community, it may not have been possible. We are becoming a destination location.” n

An organization does not earn the five-time distinction of “Best Places to Work” without merit. It must have a rock-solid, supportive work culture to back it up.

As President/CEO of IronMountain Solutions (IMS,) Hank Isenberg is a self-directed man with boundless energy, coupled with the razor-sharp administrative skills to get things done. Isenberg is a man with an overarching vision. His motto, “Do it.

Do it right. Do it right now.”

Founded in 2007, IronMountain Solutions (IMS) is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) specializing in technology solutions, located in Research Park. What started as a relatively small company with a primary focus in aviation has grown exponentially over the past decade. IMS focuses on systems, software and hardware engineering, airworthiness, engine diagnostics, testing, project management, programmatic support, cybersecurity, information assurance, acquisitions, logistics, and foreign military sales. The company gets its name from Isenberg himself; “Isenberg” is German for iron mountain.

Isenberg grew up in Nashville. Before IMS, there was the military. Upon graduating from Vanderbilt, he was commissioned in the U.S. Army and attended Flight School.

He has served tours in in Korea, Germany, and twice at Ft. Rucker. During his tour of duty in Germany, he had to opportunity to see history in the making, the tearing down of the Berlin Wall. Isenberg also visited Spain and participated in the Running of the Bulls.

Spotlight “I like to support kids,” said Isenberg. “We have amazing organizations here in North Alabama.” Kids to Love, Free2Teach, the National Children’s Advocacy Center, are a few of the many non-profits that Isenberg and IronMountain Solutions help to support. Recently, he was invited to join the board of the Boys and Girls Clubs and is learning about the ways he can help support their mission.

Other local organizations that Isenberg supports, as well as participating in active board membership include: Still Serving Veterans, the Huntsville Hospital Foundation, the Huntsville Botanical Garden, and the Huntsville-Madison County Chamber of Commerce.

Isenberg has instilled a culture of giving back to the community at IronMountain Solutions. The employee-driven Peaks Fund was created in early 2018, in collaboration with the Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville. Twice a year, the Peaks Fund awards grants to qualified applicants, based on votes from the employees. In just three years, $144,000 has been donated to a variety of local community organizations.

Being a Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Business (SDVOSB), IMS supports the Warrant Officer Association and Still Serving Veterans because it is important to support those who serve and have served our country.

“I’m very humbled to be working with a great group of people at IronMountain Solutions,” said Isenberg. “The performance of the company has allowed us to give and there’s a lot of opportunities to do things for people around here.” n

Isenberg left active duty after Desert Storm. Ten years later, after 9-11, he was recalled to active duty and assigned to Redstone Arsenal. During this time, he wasn’t feeling like himself. “After I was on active duty and all the ‘go-go’ activity going on, I’d get nauseous at weird times of the day,” he said. “I wouldn’t have an appetite at dinner.”

As a self-professed non-napper, it was also disconcerting for Isenberg to find himself falling asleep at his desk at lunchtime. At 38 years old, heart disease was not something that immediately came to mind.

While on temporary duty orders in Orange County, he stopped to visit with friends.

While chatting over dinner, he described the symptoms he had been having.

“My buddy’s wife said, ‘You know, Hank, Oprah says those symptoms are heart disease,’” said Isenberg.

“I continued to feel like crap on the flight home,” he said. “I went to the flight surgeon and when I said that he had it all checked out, and sure enough.” it was confirmed that Isenberg had heart disease, with 100% blockage. The diagnosis resulted in open heart surgery and a triple bypass.

His close call with a potential life-threatening condition prompted Isenberg’s enthusiastic support of the American Heart Association (AHA) and The Heart Center.

He has chaired the Heart Walk and in 2019, served as the Heart Ball chairman. “Time is important, don’t take life for granted, “said Isenberg. “Don’t wait for Oprah to help you. Learn the symptoms of heart disease and stroke.”

For the past decade, Isenberg has been a director for The Margarita Society, which presents one of the biggest, fanciest parties of the holiday season. Most importantly, it is an organization that has been collecting and distributing Christmas toys for kids for the past 25 years.

Unfortunately, COVID-19 put the brakes on last year’s event, so the directors quickly shifted gears by hosting the inaugural Huntsville Margarita Society Golf Tournament in early November, which was a huge success. During the first two weeks of November, there were also three toy drives in community; strategically located throughout Huntsville and Hampton Cove. There was also an option to shop Amazon at Home, having the toys directly shipped to IMS. This year, the Margarita Society collected over 5,000 toys and distributed them to 24 nonprofit organizations throughout North Alabama.

Bridal Fashions Evolve During COVID Planning a wedding during a global pandemic presents multiple challenges.

The process of selecting and purchasing the perfect bridal gown has changed too.

Courtney Robinson, owner of Winnie Couture Nashville shared some insight into that process.

COVID and bridal fashions COVID has completely transformed the bridal fashion industry. For one, COVID has challenged us to offer a hands-on try-on experience virtually, which was a huge hurdle in that brides cannot touch, feel or try on dresses. We have learned how to romance the experience virtually and have continued to offer small in-person fittings.

Because many brides have had to scale back their weddings, we’re seeing many short or more casual dresses. Some brides, however, are more focused to their dress because they have had to cut their catering or venue spends. Nashville brides are going for simple, elegant gowns, while Atlanta brides are way more daring than before COVID. Trends in bridal fashion Our store showcases over 150 exquisite gowns in-store and Winnie Couture designers create 30-40 new gowns each season, so we always have fresh pieces. Right now, we’re seeing more shoulder capes, subtle sparkles, layered skirts, short dresses, lightweight ruffles and clean, minimalistic gowns.

Group events and activities are making a comeback in 2021 by modifying the participant experience to provide the safest environment possible. Panoply Arts Festival returns to Big Spring International Park April 23-25 and I can’t wait for this world-class celebration of the arts. Head to The Ledges for professional golf at the inaugural Huntsville Championship starting April 26, and watch for the Rocket City Trash Pandas to play at Toyota Field.

Dare to Explore: Milestones to Mars takes visitors on a six-decade journey of space exploration and the innovations and discoveries that have prepared humans to land on the moon and go beyond. Developed by the U.S. Space & Rocket Center’s exhibits team, Dare to Explore highlights historic artifacts and new technologies for the Artemis mission to return to the moon.

The Center continues offering two new activities in their Underwater Astronaut Trainer: DIVR+ is virtual reality snorkeling with sensory feedback that provides a realistic VR experience and Sea Trek is a fully guided underwater walking experience suitable for swimmers and divers of all skill levels. These offerings are in addition to the Discovery and Enterprise Shuttle Experiences, also available while Space Camp is on hiatus.

Burritt on the Mountain is offering some great family-friendly events and activities. Starting March 27 through the summer, GeoQuest uses clues and GPS technology to lead you on a hunt to collect sets of Quest Cards. Once you find all of the cards for all four adventures, you can enter a monthly drawing for a free family membership. Special spring break activities, hikes, an Easter Jubilee, and Spring Farm Day, are all fun ways to enjoy the great outdoors and fantastic view!

The Huntsville Botanical Garden is a wonderful place to visit year round. They’ve just opened the first phase of Tweetsville, an immersive experience in the Children’s Garden that explores the role that birds play in our ecosystem. You can observe birds in their natural environment, learn about their native habitats, and discover how plants, animals, and people rely on each other to create a healthy ecosystem.

EarlyWorks Children’s Museum has Toys: The Inside Story, a fascinating look into toys for the young and young-at-heart. The Von Braun Center is hosting numerous sporting events, performances and shows for your enjoyment. The Huntsville Museum of Art has galleries filled with a variety of exhibitions including their Buccellati Silver Menagerie collection.

Ashley Ramirez Ph.D., is a baker, restauranteur and author. She owns Mason Dixon Bakery, which specializes in gluten free products, as well as raising awareness about autoimmune disease and food allergies.

EVENT: What inspired you to be a baker?

AR: I always loved baking and cooking as a child, and some of my earliest memories are making apple pies for the holidays. It was my Pop-Pop’s favorite! While I loved being in the kitchen, I never actually dreamed of owning a bakery/restaurant. I am a chemist by training and at heart, which actually fits perfectly. Baking is truly science in the kitchen, fine tuning reactions to get the perfect texture and flavor profile. After finishing my doctorate, I came to Huntsville to pursue a career within the science field. Through a series of events, that career path did not come to fruition. While owning a bakery/ restaurant is not what I dreamed of as a child, I would never dream anything differently now. It is truly my passion, and my calling. I love being able to serve the community and fulfill a need, while bringing joy to people’s lives.

EVENT: Do you have a favorite story about a wedding or other kind of cake?

AR: It was actually a cupcake that changed my life forever. Mason Dixon started its first year primarily in the Farmers Markets, in order to increase awareness of the business. One of the first Saturdays at Madison City Farmers Market, I was set up with my cupcakes and breads on display. A little girl came up to the table, probably 5 or 6 years old, and looked at the cupcakes longingly. She said, “I wish I could have one.” I said, “Check with your Mommy, and maybe you can have one!” She said, “No, I can’t. I can’t have gluten.” My heart jumped. I said, “Well, you know what, every cupcake here is gluten free.” Her eyes lit up. She started pointing at the cupcakes. “This one is gluten free? This one is gluten free?” I kept nodding yes at every question. She couldn’t contain her excitement. She ran across to the booth where her Mom was and exclaimed, “Mommy, Mommy! Come here! I can have a cupcake, they are all gluten free.” In this moment, I knew I was exactly where I needed to be.

EVENT: Why is offering gluten-free products important to you?

AR: While choosing to be gluten free is a lifestyle decision for some people, for others, it is a necessity.

I happen to be one of those people. Towards the end of college, I was diagnosed with Celiac disease, which is an autoimmune disease that causes your body to basically attack itself when you consume gluten. Mason Dixon was founded for two purposes. One to provide gluten free products to the community, and two, to spread awareness of autoimmune diseases and food allergies. While everything is gluten free, we also address several common food allergies such as dairy, egg, soy and more. It is our mission to provide safe and delicious foods to everyone. We enjoy the challenge of designing foods to meet an allergen list. We believe no one should have to go without the pleasures of a birthday cake or wedding cake.

EVENT: How have COVID restrictions changed the way you operate your business?

AR: COVID has certainly changed the way we operate over the last year. While everyone has been careful, several of our customers are naturally immune compromised, so we have felt called to be even more restrictive to ensure that our customers can continue to get the allergen friendly foods they need, safely. We have remained curbside only for the majority of the past year, restricting customers from entering the building. As a business that thrives on those “add-on” purchases, this has been challenging. We have implemented a new online ordering system that allows customers to see the menu online, place their order for now, or for days in advance, and then have it delivered to their car. Another main focus has been our e-commerce site, which allows customers to have bread, cookies, cupcakes and even cakes, shipped directly to their door, all across the U.S. We have seen a dramatic increase in the number of orders from all across the country. The key of being able to survive this time is adaptation. You can never stop brainstorming, changing, challenging your business to adapt to the current situation.

EVENT: Tell about the program that helped provide lunches for health care workers.

AR: This summer, as the number of cases in our direct area began to rise, and our healthcare workers were put under incredible stress of trying to keep us all healthy and safe, several individuals and businesses began trying to find ways to show their support. We began a program called “Lunches for Heroes” where people could sponsor a boxed lunch to be made and delivered to the hospital. We coordinated with both Huntsville and Crestwood to deliver over 1,000 meals to our hospital workers. It was through the generous support of our community that we were able to provide.

the meal. We have not been allowing guests to touch any serving pieces. For your guests’ tables, consider dropping down to only six guests per table, as opposed to the standard eight. This limits exposure at the table and spaces your guests out a little more.

EVENT: I hear you have a new cookbook that was just published.

AR: In December of 2019, we were contacted by Callisto Publishing to author a cookbook entitled, “Paleo for Two”. It was such an honor to be sought out as the authors. It shows how far of a reach Mason Dixon has, and how far we have come in the last seven years! This cookbook focuses on healthy recipes for two people to enjoy at home, and can be purchased either on Amazon or directly through us at the store.

Everything from breakfast entrees like Bananas Foster Pancakes, to desserts, salads and more are covered!

We never dreamed that while trying to adapt to running a restaurant during a pandemic, we would also be authoring a 100-recipe cookbook. It was a challenge to say the least! This cookbook highlights recipes from our head Chef, Matthew Streeter, and myself. You will find a few recipes from items we serve at the restaurant, like our Paleo Sandwich bread, and Buffalo Cauliflower, to new recipes that have not yet made their debut. This cookbook is hopefully just the beginning of publishings to come from Mason Dixon! n

EVENT: How have you adjusted to help couples who have gotten or are getting married during the pandemic?

AR: Each couple has been unique in their handlings of the pandemic, requiring us to take a different approach to every wedding. Some couples have delayed their weddings completely, some have gone from a buffet to a plated dinner, some have reduced to a small, intimate gathering instead of a large celebration. The most amazing thing about it, is that no matter how the celebration has changed, when it comes time for the wedding day, it has been a beautiful and perfect day each time. In my opinion, the pandemic has forced us to come back to focusing on the reason for the celebration, not the celebration itself. Some of my favorite weddings we have done this year have been 25 people, in their parent’s backyard. There are several precautions that can be taken to help your guests feel safe at your celebration, if you do choose to continue with a larger gathering. Switching to a plated dinner does reduce exposure between the food and the guests. It also eliminates guests gathering in the line waiting for the buffet. If you do continue with a buffet, be sure to space guests out while they approach the buffet line. Also, be sure to have your caterer serve every component of
