I’m ready to put my umbrella away for a while! Or better yet, trade it for a pair of flip flops and soak up the sun’s warm rays on a white sandy beach where I can bask in the sounds of crashing waves. It is amazing the accuracy of the Farmers’ Almanac Winter 2020, which forecasted a wet and mild winter. As unpredictable as Mother Nature is, I believe they hit the nail right on the head this season. As I write this letter for the EVENT Magazine, we are scheduled for press with two publications at the same time. This issue – March April Huntsville EVENT Magazine and the March issue of The Huntsville Business Journal. I am reviewing all that has happened with events benefitting the numerous nonprofit organizations and our advertising partners who support EVENT as well as the news reported in the HBJ. There is so much percolating in right here in North Alabama, especially immediately around us. I am thankful for the leadership, developers and investors who have the vision to shape Huntsville, as well as the organizers and volunteers who roll up their sleeves and work for the causes that move them. We are truly fortunate to have you all around and making a difference in our community. Let’s get right to the point. It’s the wedding issue! It’s my favorite. Since I was a little girl, wearing my mom’s half-slip for a veil and tottering down the hall in her heels carrying a bouquet, I’ve loved weddings. I even had the chance to live out my own version of the fairy-tale almost 20 years ago now. I never get tired of looking back at the pictures of that day. So, my advice to couples? Don’t skimp on the pictures. You might forget the food or the toasts. You might even forget your brother-in-law doing the sprinkler dance at the reception. Well, maybe not. Even so, reliving that comical moment would require converting the old VHS tape to digital. But photos are treasures you can easily access. In our pages, we feature The Tale of Two Weddings. Photos by Steve Babin The Huntsville-Madison Hospitality Association celebrated their 23rd awards dinner on January 21 at The Westin Huntsville. The event served to honor the Pineapple and Red Ribbon Huntsville Hospitality Awards Recipients; recognize Taste of Huntsville and Scholarship winners and install the board of directors. With more than 190 registrants, this year’s awards were the highest attended since 2017. Fare was catered by The Westin, whose staff also arranged flowers and décor. One of the major highlights of the evening was the scholarship presentation, which totaled $6,500. The Hospitality Association assists its members and their children in their pursuit of an education as one of the major benefits of membership. The awards dinner included the check presentation in the amount of $20,000 from the proceeds of the 2019 Taste of Huntsville to two local charities; Downtown Rescue Mission and Kids to Love Foundation. n continued on page 36

Benefiting the Huntsville Youth Orchestra and community music education programs, this festive event has become a Huntsville holiday tradition. Presented by the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guild for the 53rd year, this year’s tea was hosted at the beautiful Twickenham Historic District home of Beverly and Danny Alm. Having undergone several renovations in its 201 year existence, Beverly, owner of Accents of the South, and her husband Danny have just completed the most extensive renovation in the Gates House history. Hand-chosen textiles and professionally designed finishing provided the perfect backdrop for this elegant occasion.

Around 275 people attended the event hosted by Chris Russell and Sharon Doviet in their home. What started as a simple open house in 2006 has become a unique tradition, pulling together a diverse cross-section of Huntsville. Because who doesn’t like waffles? And omelets, bacon, Bloody Marys, mimosas? Chef Ralph Douglas entertained attendees with custom-made and hand-flipped omelets, six at a time. It was all a team effort with friends pitching in. Neighbor Justin Langford holds the distinction as the guest who has attended all 14 editions of the event, though Mayor Tommy Battle comes in a close second. n

A Tale of Two Weddings Our annual wedding issue often comes with how-to’s and where-to’s. But this issue we chose to feature the stories of two couples from meeting to proposal, ceremony to honeymoon and beyond. Both tales unfold on the tops of mountains. Each relates details of beautiful and meaningful wedding days. While one couple's vows were witnessed by a host of family and friends, the other chose an intimate ceremony witnessed by their officiant amid the tranquility of the forest. Best of all, each couple is living their own version of “happily ever after” in Huntsville.

Betsy Byrom & Lance Wallace

Huntsville natives Betsy and Lance Wallace were married high atop Sand Mountain at Gorham’s Bluﬀ in Pisgah, Al. Read on as Betsy recounts the day. Background Lance and I were both born and grew up in Huntsville. He attended Auburn University and I went to the University of Alabama. He currently works as an electrical engineer, and I am a full-time pharmaceutical sales rep and a part-time Child Life Specialist with Huntsville Hospice “The Caring House.” Living and working back home, we love having our families here in Huntsville with us.

The Reception On the bluff lawn the guests enjoyed a main buffet, several specialty food stations, plus a dessert table made with love by the groom’s grandmother, Betty Ingram. We had a specialty drink, “The Walter,” named after our white Lab. After dinner, Lisa and the Elusion Band from Montgomery played in the amphitheater. With music from the Motown era to today…let’s just say a lot of dancing was done. We left in the groom’s grandfather’s Jeep, the car we were in when he proposed. As we left fireworks exploded in the sky – a perfect ending to the day.

Honeymooning

Lance and I have always known of each other, but we officially met through mutual friends at the Iron Bowl in 2013, then started dating that following February.

Our honeymoon was to St. Lucia. We used Soohoo Travel Agency. We stayed in an overwater bungalow. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that we will remember forever!

The Proposal

Married life

It was a beautiful Saturday in October. We were riding around in the Jeep when he asked if I wanted to hike where we did on one of our very first dates. At the top of the Cecil Ashburn hiking trail was a beautiful view. He told me really sweet things, got down on one knee and I said YES! When we got to the bottom of the mountain, he had some of my closest friends and my family waiting. Then we went to meet the rest of our friends and family to celebrate at the Lumberyard.

Life as a married couple is wonderful but takes work every day. We have established a routine and have grown closer to each other and to the Lord. We’re learning how to serve each other and the meaning of marriage – to be a reflection of Christ and his church. We have a white Lab who is now two years old and he keeps us busy! We can’t wait to see what the second year of marriage will hold.

The Planning

It took about 10 months to plan. We are so thankful to those who helped us, especially my parents Suzanne and Buzzy Byrom and our wedding planner Susan Rutenburg. None of this would have come together without the preparation provided by our families, the venue, In Bloom florist, and Silver Spoon Catering.

Advice for brides

Meeting

The Venue We chose to get married at Gorham’s Bluff in Pisgah, only an hour away from Huntsville. My parents spent their 5th anniversary there more than 25 years ago. When we went to visit, we knew 100% that was where we wanted to get married.

SO thankful that we have zero regrets and wouldn’t change anything! If we had to say one thing is, we wish it didn’t go by as fast as it did!

Take it all in and don’t sweat the small things. Engage a wedding planner, start planning early so all the details are in place prior to your wedding day. Remember that the wedding day is just one day and to focus on what truly matters, which is becoming one. Most importantly pray about your wedding day and hand it over to the Lord and he will make it perfect for you.

Gorham’s Bluff has the most beautiful view overlooking the Tennessee River with a bluff-side pavilion for the ceremony, an expansive lawn where we enjoyed the reception, and an amphitheater which accommodated the band and dance floor. The lodge was perfect for the bridesmaids to stay and included a bridal suite as well as a dining area for the bridesmaids’ luncheon. With several cottages and homes, the property easily accommodated the groomsman, family members and close friends, providing a peaceful atmosphere for everyone to enjoy.

The Ceremony We chose not to do a “first look” so seeing each other at the ceremony for the first time was so sweet. We had our pastor officiate – Allen Pedram from Church of the Highlands, where Lance and I have attended the last six years. He led everyone in reciting the Lord’s prayer which I remember doing since I was young at First United Methodist Church. It was so meaningful, and we could feel the presence of the Lord throughout the ceremony. A string quartet played our favorite Christian music for the procession. One of my childhood friends read scripture from Colossians. One fun surprise was the lead singer of our band came to sing the exit song, “This Will Be an Everlasting Love.” A mishap we never knew until after the ceremony was that Lance’s ring was left in my mom’s purse the entire ceremony, so my bridesmaids asked a groomsman to pass his ring for the ring exchange! We thought it was funny and were just glad we found out after the ceremony. We have a sweet memory of putting on his ring over our first dinner as husband and wife.

Emily and Bryan Earle eloped in a private ceremony in the Madison Married life We always try to laugh. Things aren’t always easy, but we usually humor each other. County Mountain Nature Trail. Emily tells their story: [The couple has a one-year-old son.] We currently have no pets.

Background Both of Bryan’s parents were in the military so he moved around quite a bit – but he claims his hometown as Gladstone, Michigan in the Upper Peninsula. He’s an Air Force veteran and is currently completing his bachelor’s degree in professional studies while employed as a project manager at ATECH Inc. in Huntsville, Al. I am from Tullahoma, Tenn. Both of my parents grew up in Huntsville, so I spent a lot of time here as a child and ended up moving here after college. I am currently a stay-at-home mom to our one-year old Emmett.

Anything you’d change No, it was the most perfect day. We would probably do it again, the exact same way.

Advice for brides If we could make a recommendation to any couple, it would be to travel to a destination that is “out of the norm” for a honeymoon. We will definitely be going back to Friday Harbor someday and would also love to own a vacation property there in the future. When people think about the Northern West Coast, they think of rain, but during our time there the weather was perfect for fall and whale watching.

Meeting Bryan was here for the summer working in 2014, we went on a blind date and a few months later we flew to Chicago, rented a U-haul and Bryan moved to Alabama to work permanently.

My advice to brides would be - elope, it is less stressful, you make the day about you and your soon-to-be husband. It is incredibly intimate to only have that one person with you that day.

The proposal New Year’s Eve coming into 2016, went out to dinner at Commerce Kitchen (the place we met for our first date.) Bryan had planned to propose outside prior to us going in for dinner but decided it wasn’t the right moment. We went to dinner as planned and finally just before midnight, he called me in the kitchen for a glass of champagne and got down on one knee and proposed. He had the ring in his pocket the entire night.

The planning We decided to elope because we wanted the day to just be about us. I never pictured having a big wedding, and with a lot of our family out of town, it would have been a big production. We felt it was more intimate to just have us and the officiant (and the photographer- Ashley.) It didn’t take long to plan because we kept it pretty simple. I had my mother’s wedding dress redesigned for our elopement.

The ceremony We got married on Green Mountain by the Cambron Covered Bridge. We picked the location because we had hiked there a few times and enjoyed our time there. It was pretty and seemed like the perfect spot for our big day. For my bouquet and his boutonniere, we used artificial succulents and flowers, so we could keep them forever. It was extremely warm that day (September 19, 2016) and Bryan was in a suit and hot, he’s usually not the type to dress up, but he was a trooper and made it through.

The reception We had a reception about a week after our honeymoon at our house. We rented a tent and had catering for the event. It was mostly family and a few friends.

Memories of the day We just had a great day, we really enjoyed sharing the moment together without all the distractions of a traditional wedding.

Honeymooning We flew to Vancouver, drove down to Washington and took a ferry to Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands. We spent a few days on the Island, went whale watching, explored the Island and fell in love with it. Afterwards, we went back to Vancouver and spent a few nights in the city. We biked the Stanley Park Seawall, toured the Granville Island Public Market and enjoyed great food along the way in the Gastown neighborhood.

Ray Maranda is in his fourth decade as a chef and ice carver. He moved to Huntsville in 1992 with Club Corporation of America, known in Huntsville as Heritage Club. He graduated from the Fox Valley Culinary Institute and attended the Culinary Institute of America in Greystone in Napa Valley, California for continuing education. He and Bubba Conner, of Bubba’s Silver Spoon Catering, have been working together for the last 20 years. EVENT: Do you consider yourself to be artistic? RM: No, I can’t draw a stick figure, but I can turn a block of ice into a tiger. I did that for my daughter’s first grade class.

They will last several hours but start to lose detail in about two hours. The piece sits on a glow box, a Lucite tray with a tube that empties into a bucket underneath.

EVENT: What tools do you use for carving? Where do you get the ice? RM: For tools, chainsaw, chisels, a die grinder, ice scrapers. The ice blocks are special pieces purchased from Birmingham.

EVENT: Do you create large pieces onsite or do you do everything in a studio? RM: Most pieces are created here, then single blocks are assembled on-site. For transport, a saturated tablecloth covers the ice then I take the frozen tablecloth off.

EVENT: How long does it take to create a full-sized project? RM: Depending on the detail, it takes 1 – 1.5 hours. Most start out weighing 300 pounds. The finished product weighs 125/150 pounds. EVENT: What’s the timeframe for melting? How do you keep the art pieces preserved for events? How do you contain the water as they melt? RM: With melting, when [the piece] comes out, it immediately frosts, then starts to get clear at the corners, then all clear.

The preview was the first part of Black History Month programming at the Huntsville Museum of Art. “We continue to strive to enhance the museum and structure it as an inclusive cultural site enjoyed by the entire Huntsville community,” said HMA’s Executive Director Christopher Madkour. “Our goal is to encourage families to visit the museum and be a part of its cultural diversity." n

He admits to the challenges he has faced over the years in such a highly competitive industry that has over the years, been both negatively and positively affected by external factors like interest rates, gas prices, housing trends and the overall economy. He will even wax a little sentimental about moving his whole family and homebuilding operation to Huntsville in the early 1980s from the Gulf Coast. But when EVENT approached him to talk about his philanthropic work with Lee Marshall’s Kids to Love, or how he is always on the front lines of disaster relief after the tornadoes and hurricanes that have affected so many communities from Louisiana to Mississippi and Alabama – well, he didn’t want to talk about that. He clams up if you ask him about those new armored vests he bought for the Madison Police Department, or the trading cards he purchased for the local Special Olympics he sponsored. We just got a nod that seems to confirm those acts of kindness. So, EVENT turned to Joey Ceci, spokesman for The Breland Companies who has worked with Louis for over a decade, to get the scoop.

“Louis believes in giving back to the communities where we do business, whether it is helping support youth athletics, working with the Madison Police Department to create trading cards for the Special Olympics’ athletes, or giving money to up-armor local police vests,” said Ceci. “Some of the things we get involved with are causes that are dear to his heart personally like donating a building to Lee Marshall’s Kids to Love or supporting victims left in the wake of destruction following a hurricane or tornado.” Ceci continued, “Louis is from the Gulf Coast so he knows something about hurricanes and tornadoes. When the tornadoes hit Huntsville in 1989, and struck again in 2010 leaving a path of destruction across North and Central Alabama, Louis was the first to call local officials and say, ‘Where do you need people? Where do you need help?’ “When Katrina hit New Orleans and the Mississippi Coast, Louis loaded 18-wheelers full of food, water and supplies and sent them to the area,” said Ceci. Several years ago, Louis and his wife Patti learned that Kids to Love, founded by former WHNT news anchor Lee Marshall, had a number of positive programs either for foster kids or in support of them and foster families. Among them was More Than a Backpack and Christmas For the Kids.

Louis’ wife, Patti was adopted and although she was raised by a loving family, she and Louis know firsthand that many kids go into the foster care system and are never legally adopted. Lee Marshall’s Kids to Love is dedicated to making life easier for these kids. According to Ceci, Louis discovered they were stuffing these backpacks with school supplies, wrapping Christmas gifts, and running operations from Marshall’s home where there was very limited space. “Louis donated a multi-use building at 140 Castle Drive in Madison to Kids to Love so they would not only have warehousing, office and storage space, and an area for doing all the assemblage, but where they could house KTECH, a worker training program where kids who have aged out of foster care can learn the skills needed to get a job, and in some cases, go on to college. The building is now the headquarters for Kids to Love.” Lee Marshall herself said, “Patti and Louis are blessings to our kids we serve in foster care. Gifting the building of our Kids to Love Center was the opportunity we needed to launch our KTECH training program and to bring all of our outreach efforts under one roof. Their continued support of our scholarship program helps us give our kids a chance to break the cycle of poverty with education. Their support is from the heart, and never for the credit.” n

2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. Catch their latest interactive exhibit and discover exciting advances in light technology with full-body interactive experiences in “Playing with Light!” The Huntsville Museum of Art also celebrates 50 years. They have some fun events and exhibits planned so stay tuned. The Huntsville Botanical Garden will be home to more than 100 large sculptures from ZimSculpt, representing approximately 250 world-renowned sculptors and young apprentices from all over Zimbabwe. The award-winning exhibition has been touring since 2000. Guests can also visit a marketplace where stone sculptures are sold along with other African art and jewelry. Sculptors will provide daily demonstrations to show guests their techniques – and maybe let them try it out for themselves! ZimSculpt is here for a very limited time - April 3 through May 31. The Von Braun Center is bustling with concerts, events and activities as varied as our community. The Mars Music Hall, Mark C. Smith Concert Hall and Propst Arena are at the epicenter of activity in downtown Huntsville. The Rocket City Trash Pandas’ inaugural season is here. The first game is scheduled for April 15, and Toyota Field in Town Madison is looking great. The stadium will be the centerpiece in a mixed-use development slated to include, living, shopping, dining and recreational facilities. Support our new team and enjoy some exciting minor league baseball this spring and summer. Enjoy the free walking tours of the Twickenham historic district in downtown Huntsville and historic downtown Madison on Saturday mornings in April. These 60-90 minute tours are led by residents who live in the districts, so you’re sure to hear some fascinating history. The Twickenham tours are April 4 and 11, Madison tours are April 18 and 25. Mars Music Hall Opens at VBC

Photos by Jessa Harris Tickets for the inaugural concert in the VBC’s new Mars Music Hall sold out within four minutes for headliner Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. On opening night, over 1500 guests lined up outside the venue as doors opened following a brief ribbon cutting with Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle, VBC Board of Control and Staff. Guests filled the downstairs and mezzanine levels of Mars and enjoyed a captivating performance. “Mars Music Hall opened with three fantastic shows and large crowds! The buzz at each event was energetic and positive and we hope everyone who attended had as much fun being in the new venue as we did sharing it with them. We are excited for all of the upcoming shows that are scheduled and being announced almost weekly.” said VBC Executive Director Steve Maples. n
