What a great time to be living in Huntsville! These days there is so much happening everywhere you turn. We have to hand it to our leaders for the inspiration and vision they have set forth for the Tennessee Valley. Mayors Tommy Battle and Paul Finley along with Shane Davis, Chip Cherry and Madison County Commissioner Dale Strong, among many others, have set a pace for growth that will propel our area into a more diverse economic engine that benefits not only Huntsville, Madison and Decatur – but the entire state of Alabama. I am very excited to see how and where we grow. I am thrilled after experiencing life in larger cities and then moving back to my hometown, being able to witness the evolution of Huntspatch (Huntspatch, Huntsvegas, Huntsville…synonyms for you newcomers.) You have in your hands our March April 2019, wedding-themed issue, informing brides-to-be of the numerous locations for their memorable occasions. What a winter we had! I saw a funny meme that said, “January was a tough year, but we made it.” That is certainly what it felt like. The event served to honor the recipients of Pineapple and Red Ribbon Huntsville Hospitality Awards, recognize Taste of Huntsville and Scholarship Winners, and install the board of directors. Around 170 guests attended the dinner, which was catered by Bubba’s Silver Spoon Catering, with flowers and décor arranged by the Huntsville Botanical Garden. Entertainment was provided by Metropolitan Disk Jockey.

ServisFirst Bank hosted and presented the event. The PVS supports the HSO’s annual Free Family Concert, open to the entire community at no charge. The purpose of the event was to offer an upscale food and wine tasting to the Huntsville community in the elegant setting of The Garden. Around 200 guests attended the festivities. Guests had the opportunity to sample food from some of the area’s best restaurants including Oshi Bowl; Grille 29; Ruth’s Chris and Purveyor, as well as tasting exceptional wine from wineries across the country. Wafflepalooza Wows for the 13th Year Photos by Steve Babin Wafflepalooza 13 was a big success on January 19, even with rainy weather. Sharon Doviet and Chris Russell host the annual open house every third Saturday of January at their home. Sharon is an attorney with her own family law practice and Chris works in private banking and wealth management. More than 215 people enjoyed Belgian waffles, omelets, bacon, sausage, fruit and other things from the menu. There were rave reviews for the Mimosa station and the specialty Bloody Marys. The 8th Annual Hi-Fi Wedding Fest was on January 26 at Lowe Mill. The event showcased local photographers, videographers, DJs, food and beverage vendors, make-up artists, bridal fashions and more. The purpose was to save brides and grooms time and energy when planning their nuptials. More than 150 guests attended the occasion that was sponsored by Ashley Vaughn of White Rabbit Studios. The Huntsville Museum of Art hosted Jon Scott for the Voices of Our Times series on January 17 at the museum. With 150 attending, the guest of honor was introduced by Jay Town, the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama. Mr. Scott’s presentation touched on the state of the cable news industry and how current events are being covered by today’s media. The presentation was followed by a question and answer segment with the audience, and ended with a wine reception where guests could meet Mr. Scott. Voices of Our Times is an annual lecture series that brings people of note in the arts, academia, design, publishing and politics to the Huntsville Museum of Art for candid, in-depth discussions and presentations. This is one of the largest fundraisers for the Museum.

Ann Lane, Account Executive Ann studied at the University of Alabama. She loves local advertising. “Serving my accounts and seeing them grow is my reward. My career in Huntsville ad sales has spanned the past 24 years,” she stated. For the past five years Ann’s home has been EVENT Magazine. Ann has been blessed with two daughters and eight grandchildren. Describing her life and hobbies, Ann said, “I'm a foodie. I love it all. St. John is my dream vacation. I enjoy spending a lot of time in the fall watching Alabama football at Bryant-Denny Stadium. You can find me in the aisles of Publix most days and enjoying all that our thriving community has to offer.” She continued, “I wouldn’t want to be doing anything other than I am now – supporting local business and enjoying life to the fullest.”
Lee Nast, Account Executive Lee and her family transferred from Birmingham to Huntsville 25 years ago. “It has been a joy to see our beautiful city flourish and grow so quickly,” she said. She studied marketing, football and ‘mostly fun’ at Auburn University and later taught fitness classes for more than 15 years locally. “Through luck and Facebook, I landed a great sales gig at EVENT Magazine.” Lee explained. “I call it my lipstick fund. I really enjoy helping local business and friends grow their client base.” Lee is a firm believer in the staying power of print. She serves on the board of Not One More Alabama and finds great comfort in helping those touched by addiction. Lee describes herself as beyond blessed, “Life has given me a loving supportive husband and wonderful family of four sons, two beautiful daughters-in-law and four very active grandchildren.” Lee and husband David spend a great deal of their free time at the lake and supporting this community by attending events and being very involved in many local nonprofits.

Photos by Stephanie E. Jennings Energy Huntsville threw their inaugural Gala for Giving back, honoring Girls, Inc. on December 6, 2018 at the Huntsville Marriot. The event sponsor was Becky Gordon Allstate in Madison. With around 200 guests, the fundraiser raised $3,000 for Girls, Inc., and provided an overview of the nonprofit organization, its activities and scholarships. The evening also celebrated the Energy Huntsville Initiative, and recognized its longstanding partners and sponsors. Stephanie Malone, Huntsville Girls, Inc. Executive Director gave a progress report of the nonprofit, stating that 600 local girls K-8 are being served by the program. “We’re all about giving opportunity to those who would otherwise not get it,” said Malone, adding that girls from the Huntsville chapter can be found among the graduates of each of Alabama’s four-year colleges. “Our girls are leading on the college campuses where they attend.” n

Corrie Spearing is the Owner/Designer and Event Planner for 333 Designs. She is a Huntsville native, born and raised, who loves life and people. She started 333 Designs more than 10 years ago and has been a part of hundreds of weddings and events. EVENT: What inspired you to be an event planner? CS: As a kid, I always liked playing dress-up, for my 5th birthday my grandmother made me a wedding dress – she had the veil, the shoes, even a garter and bouquet. That led to many mock weddings and event organizing. I took classes in photography, cake design, became a professional seamstress and studied interior decorating, never really knowing it would all open the door to this amazing career. EVENT: What is your favorite thing about planning weddings? CS: I love people and every wedding is unique and special. I not only get to be part of such an amazing day for a couple, but I get to make their day less stressful. Also, I get excited about adding the little details and elements to make each wedding beautiful and uniquely represent the couple. EVENT: What’s your universal advice to brides? CS: Remember the reason you are planning this event: You are marrying your best friend and this is a celebration of love and union. Something may go slightly wrong but no matter what it will all still be perfect. Keeping the focus on the real reason will help keep the stress away and make the planning process more enjoyable…and of course hire a professional planner! Some brides focus on saving money and don’t think they need a wedding planner. But then on their wedding day, the bride is stressed, her family is busy decorating, and everybody is exhausted instead of getting to enjoy one of the greatest days of their life. An investment in a planner will result in an exponentially greater wedding. EVENT: What’s the first question you ask to help a bride determine the best venue? CS: “As a child, how did you picture yourself on your wedding day?” There will be many people who try to give you advice and change your vision, but you need to stick with your dreams and don’t compromise. This day is all about you and your partner. EVENT: In what ways do you do things differently? CS: I am very personal and passionate about helping and designing events. Anyone can plan an event, but after more than 600 weddings I know how to create the perfect day that is unique for each bride. Because my focus is the client, I feel I create a customized planning process for them, and I am able to help take stress off and make everything run very smoothly. EVENT: What’s your favorite thing about Huntsville? CS: My favorite thing about Huntsville is that even though we are growing we still have the elements of a small town. Huntsville has everything you need in entertainment and dining options, but you can go downtown at any time and see someone you know. n

The tea was held on the traditional first Thursday in December and truly was the perfect way to kick off the holiday season. Judge Sybil Cleveland began breaking barriers as a young adult. Her work on the bench allows her to practice her passion, which is giving back to the community and helping others. EVENT: Where were you born and what would you like people to know about your upbringing? SC: I was born and raised in Hartselle. While attending Hartselle High I became the first African-American female to win the title of Miss Hartselle High; the first African-American female to receive enough votes to become a mainstream cheerleader and not the school’s mascot. I was one of only a few African-American students to be inducted into the National Honor Society and to be placed in the Advanced Studies Program. After graduating from Hartselle High School in 1980, I enrolled in Calhoun Community College, delaying my plan to attend the University North Alabama due to a series of unfortunate events that included the loss of my mother due to lupus and the [subsequent] sudden loss of my father from heart failure. After completing Calhoun, I transferred to the University of North Alabama in 1982 and graduated with a Political Science Degree in 1984, then entered the workforce to save money for law school. I applied and was accepted to Cumberland Law School at Samford University in Birmingham in 1987 and graduated with a Juris Doctor Degree in 1990. EVENT: What is your legal background? SC: After law school, I served as an Associate Attorney in the Law Firm of Clyde E. Jones, a criminal defense firm in Birmingham where I handled cases involving murder, capital murder, rape, robbery, burglary and represented defendants in the Juvenile Court System. Simultaneously, I served as a Special Appointed Municipal Court Prosecutor for the cities of Birmingham and Ensley prosecuting criminal misdemeanors cases. I was hired in September of 1992 by the Madison County District Attorney’s Office to serve as an Assistant District Attorney in the Child Support Enforcement Unit representing the Madison County Department of Human Resources - handling child support and paternity cases. I was promoted to Supervising Attorney within the DA’s office Child Support Unit in 1998 where I remained until my appointment to the bench by the Huntsville City Council in May of 1999 – becoming the second AfricanAmerican to serve as a full-time judge in the Huntsville/Madison County Court System. I am now in my fifth term, having been reappointed (unanimously) four consecutive times and will stand for re-appointment in May of 2019. EVENT: What are your favorite things about Huntsville? SC: I love the fact that Huntsville is a most progressive city made up of people from all walks of life who work to make our community one of the best in the country. This city has given me an opportunity to be one of the youngest Municipal Court judges in Huntsville at the age of 36 years when most attorneys don’t become judges until much later in their careers. This community also supported me when it became clear that a new and innovative approach to solving a growing problem needed implementation. The problem involved an [increasing] number of persons entering the criminal justice system with serious mental health conditions. Thus, in September of 2004, I was able to start the state of Alabama’s first, Municipal Mental Health Court Program in the city of Huntsville which was designed to allow the court to intervene with intensive mental health and/or drug treatment, and legal accountability. Mental Health Court now in its 15th year has been very successful due to the long-term involvement and commitments of many entities.
Spotlight To ensure that I would have all the necessary training and skills to handle such an innovative program, the city of Huntsville supported me by giving me the opportunity to travel to the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada to study alongside judges from across the country and become the city’s first and only Certified Mental Health Court Judge in August 2005. Because of this city’s commitment, Mental Health Court’s success has helped to grow other Specialty Court Programs within the city of Huntsville Court System to include Domestic Violence Court, Veteran’s Court, and Jail Diversion. EVENT: What sparks passion in you? SC: I am most passionate about giving back and helping others. Coming from a background of meager means and having faced and overcome my own challenges has had a humbling effect on the way I approach life and how I treat others. I knew at an early age, that no matter what career path I chose, I wanted to be taken seriously and I wanted to be able to help all persons regardless of their background or station in life. In fact, I believe I was profoundly affected while working as an Assistant District Attorney addressing child support and other legal issues commonly faced by young single mothers and fathers. During my time in the Child Support Unit, I had a front row seat to how legal decisions, no matter how simple or complex, could affect entire families, regardless of income, race, and status. It was also through this experience that I voluntarily took on fostering a child for almost two years while a single person myself. I have been privileged to be able to exercise my passion of giving back and serving others as a member of many professional, civic, and charitable organizations. EVENT: What changes would you like to see implemented in our legal system? SC: I have just started my presidency of The Alabama Municipal Judges Association becoming the First African-American to serve in this capacity. The AMJA provides support to Alabama’s 273 Municipal Courts and their Judges. Inspired by the success of the Specialty Courts I have implemented in the Huntsville Court System, my goal as President of AMJA is to help implement Specialty Courts in communities throughout the State of Alabama with the hopes of ultimately improving the overall effectiveness of jurisprudence in Alabama’s Municipal Courts. Specialty Courts, when implemented properly can dramatically improve the quality of life for the individual defendants and their families, as well as the safely and well-being of the community at-large. EVENT: What do you enjoy doing in your off time? SC: In my spare time, I enjoy spending quality time with family and friends. I especially enjoy engaging in a competitive board game of Aggravation or an intense game of Spades. I also enjoy traveling, cooking, working out and taking relaxing walks with my best canine friend of 11 years, Kobie. n

It’s 2019, and there are so many fantastic events and activities in our community! Alabama Constitution Hall Park is undergoing a transformation which will serve as the perfect location to celebrate the state’s bicentennial. Watch for the grand re-opening in March. Keep checking our website, www.huntsville.org for the very latest on special events. This summer also marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon launch and landing. The U.S. Space & Rocket Center has already launched the celebration of this historic feat. Visit the Center to see their new exhibit, Apollo: When We Went to the Moon, and see the critical role that NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center played in one of the most celebrated human accomplishments of all time. The Huntsville Botanical Garden has a calendar packed with family-friendly events including Huntsville Blooms from March 17 through April and the breathtaking Chinese Lantern Festival: The Wild, which opens on March 20. There’s always something growing on at the Huntsville Botanical Garden but that’s especially true this year.

The CVB hosts free walking tours of the Twickenham and downtown Madison historic districts in April. The Twickenham tours will be held April 6 and 13 and will start at Alabama Constitution Hall Park. The downtown Madison tours will be held on April 20 and 27 and will start at the little roundhouse. All tours begin at 10 am and will be held weather-permitting. Panoply Arts Festival will once again be gracing Big Spring International Park, bringing all kinds of art, live performances and food, beverage and art vendors to downtown Huntsville in one of the oldest arts festivals in the south. Plan to attend Panoply on the weekend of April 26-28. While you’re at it, put the WhistleStop Weekend on your calendar: May 3-4. WhistleStop features live music, local beverages and some of the very best barbecue you’ve ever had. Get out and support the Huntsville Havoc as they skate to win on their home ice in the Von Braun Center. The VBC is also the premiere concert and show venue in the region. Tastebuds Lunch and Learn – Whetting Appetites for Interior Design The HMA Guild and Flower Magazine presented Tastebuds at the Museum: An Elegant Lunch and Learn on January 8 at the Huntsville Museum of Art. The event raised funds to support the HMA Guild.

Around 100 guests attended the luncheon that was catered by Curry’s of Decatur. Flowers and décor were arranged by HMA Guild President Carolyn Gandy; and Event Chair, Suzanne Richard Barnes; who extended a special thanks to committee members Beverly Allen, Mary Jim Ailor and Mary Margaret Johnson who, for months, visited numerous estate sales collecting treasure and then created unique centerpieces and floral arrangements with their finds. Other committee members included Anne Lewis, Sue Hensley, Samantha Omlie, Michele Rife, Kathy Tew, Jennifer Wu, Dona Pratt, Jamie Saunders and Carol Tevepaugh. “Tastemakers and creative idea bakers attended the tastiest ticket in town where they dined and dished about art, decor, life and so much more,” said Jennifer Wu. She continued, “The HMA Guild puts the fun in fundraising!” n
