After growing up in Huntsville and leaving right after graduation from high school in 1986, I’ve had the opportunity to hang my hat in numerous places in our great country. Spending time out west in Denver, and not too far away in Memphis, and having the pleasure of engaging in the amenities that larger metropolitan areas offer, as well as the charm of some of the smaller areas, such as Auburn, I can’t help but recognize just what we have right here at home.

Huntsville and Madison offer us the sweet spot. We live and work in an area that has the benefit of growth, with new people moving in from all over the nation and new businesses from a wide spectrum of industry being created. And yet with all of this growth, we have somehow retained the southern gentility that Huntsville and Madison had as much smaller cities. I’ve never experienced anything like this and hope that it never goes away. I am happy to call Huntsville home once again and hope that you feel the same. We are surrounded by Birmingham, Nashville and Atlanta and can easily experience the “big city” life, but still quickly return to “Huntspatch”, as it is often nicknamed.

With spring approaching, get ready to enjoy the longer daylight hours, new growth on the mountain trails, crappie fishing on the lakes and barbecue on the grills. Our time of covering events, while never ceasing, will be ramping up again until the end of the school year. Please make a point to get out and show your support to the worthwhile causes, and smile for the camera!

December 3, 2015 marked the 50th Anniversary of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Silver Tea, which is a major fundraiser for the Huntsville Youth Orchestra. As always, the Silver Tea offered a magical and elegant afternoon.

Hosted at the festively decorated home of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Wicks, guests were welcomed by 2015 Silver Tea Chairman, Karen Morris and her committee. The ambience of the beautiful setting provided a perfect backdrop for the music of some of the area's most talented young musicians, the Huntsville Youth Orchestra. Catering was provided by Sallie Ennis and Betty Lankford who presented a stylish selection of delectable treats.

The Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guild’s primary purpose is to provide support for the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra. The Silver Tea is held annually as a benefit for the Huntsville Youth Orchestra. It has provided significant support for the young musicians throughout the years. n

Have Yourself a Jazzy Little New Year was an event of Thursday, December 31 at Baron Bluff at Burritt on the Mountain. The event was a scholarship fundraiser for the Jack & Annie Anderson 2nd Chance Scholarship held by the Calhoun Community College Foundation. The scholarship is newly endowed with an initial investment of $25,000 at Calhoun Community College. Its purpose is to support the academic success of students who have faced adversity in life and are now pursuing a college degree or certificate to reach their educational goals.

Featured performer was saxophonist Jeanette Harris and band. Guests were treated to a full concert, buffet meal courtesy of Mango’s Caribbean Catering and party favors. n

Since 1985, the Huntsville Area Association of Realtors (HAAR) has gathered for a gala to install its officers and directors. This year, they celebrated that event on January 9 at Jackson Center.

Kenny Anderson served as master of ceremonies. The national anthem was sung by Tamara Bodie, with special music by the Aeolians of Oakwood University, and the band Junctional Rhythm performed.

The Huntsville Museum of Art presented David Sanger in its series, Voices of Our Times, on January 23. Sanger is New York Times National Security Correspondent and best-selling author who discussed the United States’ standing in the world in this election year and his philosophies on the presidential candidates.

“The Huntsville Museum of Art is pleased that David Sanger accepted the invitation to return to Huntsville…” Christopher J. Madkour, museum executive director, said.

“We’re especially looking forward to hearing his perspectives on presidential candidates as America enters an election year with a world experiencing significant changes.”

Madison Mayor Troy Trulock

Spotlight

A career Army officer, Mayor Troy Trulock decided in 2006 that Madison was the right place to retire, raise a family, and to volunteer time to give back to the community. Since his election as mayor, he credits the growth and success of Madison to outstanding teamwork and partnerships with Huntsville, Madison County, Limestone County, and State and Federal officials. In his state of the city address, Mayor Troy Trulock stated that he was just happy to be a part of that team!

EVENT: What is your education background?

Mayor Trulock: I have a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of Kansas, where I was also an Army ROTC Distinguished Military Graduate (graduating top of the class). Following graduation and commissioning, I served in multiple Army units and as a combat veteran was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service during the Gulf War. I also have a master’s degree in Management from the Naval Postgraduate School.

EVENT: What is your profession?

Mayor Trulock: I was elected the mayor of Madison in August 2012. Madison is one of the fastest growing cities in the state and has received local, state, and national recognition. In 2015, Madison was recognized as among the top 30 safest cities in Alabama, number three best suburb in Alabama, number eight best small city in America for working parents, and number two best city in America for veterans.

Our Madison fire department recently received an ISO Class 1 certification and became one of only 133 out of 49,000 fire districts across the country to receive this certification. The Madison City school system continues to shine with accolades in 2015 for all 11 schools.

EVENT: What brought you to this area?

Mayor Trulock: As an Army officer, my family and I were assigned to Redstone Arsenal and took up residence in Madison in 2000. In 2006, after successfully managing a multiple billion dollar Army missile program, I declined attendance at the Military War College and chose to retire from the Army.

My family and I have been involved in the Madison community for years and were honored to be named the 2011 Madison Family of the Year. In addition, I was recognized as the 2011 Madison Outstanding Veteran of the Year by the Rotary Club of Madison. Prior to taking office, I served on multiple boards of directors and executive committees, supporting growth and prosperity within our community and the Tennessee Valley.

My wife, Dana, and I have been married for more than 29 years and have been blessed with two children.

EVENT: What are your goals?

Mayor Trulock: As the mayor of Madison, I have been committed to increasing economic growth, financial stability, and improving our quality of life. In my first term, with tremendous teamwork at the state and local level, we opened up more than 1,500 acres of new development that will provide thousands of new jobs and increased revenue for our city and schools in the future. The fiscal year 2015 ended with the highest revenues for the city in the past eight years. In addition, the Standards and Poor’s rating agency gave the City of Madison an AA+ rating, which is the highest rating for a city of our size, showing tremendous financial strength, as well as strong financial growth for the future. The completion of a second interchange with access to I-565, repaving major roads and subdivision roads, as well as expanding and connecting greenways have all improved quality of life for our citizens.

EVENT: What philanthropic projects are dear to you and why?

Mayor Trulock: Organizations that take care of children in need. The Kids to Love Foundation has taken care of nearly 200,000 foster children to date, so I am very proud to support them. I am also proud to support the Shop with Hero program, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of North Alabama, and Bikes or Bust/Toys for Tots programs.

EVENT: What are your hobbies?

Mayor Trulock: Coaching. I have coached 70 youth teams in Madison.

EVENT: What do you like about Madison?

Mayor Trulock: Outstanding quality of life with an amazing school system. It is just a great place to raise a family. n

Dunagan Yates & Alison Plastic Surgery presented a free educational seminar on January 30 at Merrimack Hall. The purpose of the event was to enlighten guests about the state-of-the-art surgical and nonsurgical ways to enhance appearance of the face, breasts and body. The event was opened to the public with registration required.

This was the 9th annual event in Huntsville. The group also offers seminars in Decatur, Guntersville and Florence throughout the year. Fare was catered by Panera Bread and Chick-fil-A.

The presentation was an hour long with contributions from each of the groups’ three plastic surgeons. The physicians were available to answer questions one-on-one at the close of the morning’s activities. n

I

n the early 80’s, 12-year-old Marianthe Boyagis took a trip to Six Flags with her church youth group. In line for the Free Fall, she spotted a boy with soulful brown eyes and a warm smile. Striking up a conversation, she ended up sitting next to him on the ride, then spending the day together getting acquainted.

When it was time for goodbye, 15-year-old Michael Snyder asked for her phone number, not realizing the age difference. “The thought of a boy calling our house and my strict Greek daddy answering the phone scared me to death!” revealed Marianthe. They parted with a kiss— her first—as he tucked a scrap of paper containing her address into his pocket.

Exchanging letters during high school, then less frequently when Michael went away to college, they found time to correspond on special occasions despite their busy lives.

After college graduation, Michael became an officer in the Army and was deployed abroad, while Marianthe traveled the world and sent post cards from exotic locations.

Settling into a rural community and a job, Marianthe found herself chatting online with her pen pal. With his tour over, “He chose a state-side assignment to be closer to me,” Marianthe said. Arriving to meet his flight, she added, “My face was hurting from smiling so much, I must have looked like a crazy person.”

After a long-distance courtship, he invited her on a trip to Six Flags and they decided to ride the Free Fall. While the ride rose ten stories and paused at the top, Marianthe looked over at Michael. “He was smiling and holding a beautiful ring. The noise of the ride made it impossible to hear what he was saying, but I could read his lips that said ‘Will you marry me?’” She responded by screaming, “Don’t drop it!” as the ride plunged downward. Through laughter and tears, she accepted.

The couple married later that year, 17 years to the day they first met.

Married for 15 years, they now have four children. Marianthe concluded, “I wake up so very thankful every day, knowing how God orchestrated the love story which is our lives.” n

Redstone Arsenal celebrated its third annual black-tie holiday gala on December 18, 2015 at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center. The event gave an opportunity for the greater Redstone Arsenal community to come together to reflect, relax and reset for the coming year.

Catered by the Space and Rocket Center, flowers were arranged by community volunteers. The 82nd Airborne All American Chorus entertained guests and Pink Cadillac provided tunes for dancing the night away.

Accomplished violinist Mark Reneau began performing with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra in 1977. He assumed the position of Concertmaster in 1998, and has quite an extensive resume. Mr. Reneau plays frequently with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra and has played alongside Bernadette Peters, Ethel Merman and many more. In 2003, he spent a year touring with Vince Gill and Amy Grant. He has two children, Charles and Douglas, who inherited their father’s passion for music. Both sons perform with the Portland Symphony Orchestra.

EVENT: When did you first become interested in the violin?

MR: My 3rd grade teacher was a violinist who played in the Chattanooga Symphony.

One day she brought her violin to school and asked if anyone would be interested in playing a few notes on it. I raised my hand, she called me up to the front of the class and I made some ungodly noises; it was love at first scratch.

EVENT: Where did you receive your training?

MR: I attended state schools and have two degrees from UT Chattanooga. I was also fortunate to have attended the Aspen Music Festival and to have become a member of the Nashville Symphony shortly thereafter. I got a lot of invaluable “on the job training” in that situation. I also have coached with several outstanding players, including Bill Preucil and Chee Yun, as well as studying conducting with Vakhtang Jordania, a prizewinner in the Herbert von Karajan Competition.

EVENT: How many instruments do you play?

MR: I first studied the piano beginning at age 6. My teacher was a rather scary woman, so when the violin appeared in my life two years later I was quite happy to quit my piano lessons. However, I’ve played (and played at) the piano ever since.

It’s the best music therapy for me.

EVENT: Do you teach privately?

MR: I have taught for nearly 40 years. I have a former student who plays in the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra; one teaching at Florida State University, and several who play in the Chattanooga Symphony, two in principal positions. I love teaching and feel that it’s among the most challenging and rewarding aspects of life as a musician. As for a philosophy, I can only say that every student requires a personalized approach, and as a teacher I must find the right words to explain the technical and musical challenges of playing the violin, and being a musician to each one.

EVENT: Do you ever get nervous?

MR: I can’t imagine any performing musician who doesn’t deal with some form of nerves before a performance. I’ve never been the sort of player (like Horowitz) who has to be pushed onstage. I may be feeling some butterflies right before playing, but when the bow hits the strings my focus is on achieving the sound and musical effect that’s in my head.

EVENT: If you could play with anyone, who would it be and why?

MR: Without a doubt, Yo-Yo Ma. I have played with him four times, and every time has been an unforgettable experience. The first time was in 2005, in Huntsville. There is a great concertmaster solo in the last movement of the Dvorak Cello Concerto, a soaring, lyrical duet for the violin and cello. I fully expected him to tell me his preferred bowings. Imagine my surprise when, after the first run-through he looked at me and said "I got your bowings." Yo-Yo changes the molecules in a hall just by walking onstage. I will never forget the tsunami of applause that greeted his first entrance in the Huntsville concert. It was a roar I had never before heard there, and I have not heard it since. n

Under the Christmas Tree

The 31st annual Under the Christmas Tree at Randolph School was bigger and better than ever. The event featured more than 100 unique merchants and an array of special events including gingerbread house decorating, Elf University, Holiday Art for children, Breakfast with Santa with photos, entertainment and more! Proceeds from Under the Christmas Tree benefit Randolph School’s Financial Aid Program. n

The expansion of Grandview Gardens at Redstone Village added 16 residences in the memory care neighborhood. The Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting was Thursday, December 17, 2015. Mayor Tommy Battle and Councilman Jennie Robinson were on hand to speak. 11,912 total square feet are being added to Grandview Gardens. n

IBERIABANK Holiday Reception IBERIABANK proudly partnered with the Huntsville Museum of Art in hosting their 4th Annual Holiday Reception.

Marvel at stunning gem, mineral and metal creations of artist Kathy Chan’s Celestial, Dreams, The Art of Space Jewelry exhibit, immerse yourself in the feats and future of space exploration, then enjoy the festive atmosphere with authentic German cuisine.

The free walking tours provided by the CVB will be held the first four Saturday mornings in April. Join us in downtown Huntsville April 2 and 9, and in downtown Madison April 16 and 23. The Huntsville tours start at the Confectionery Shop of Alabama Constitution Village, and the historic downtown Madison tours start near the little roundhouse. All tours start at 10 a.m. and last between 60 and 90 minutes.

The Huntsville Botanical Garden features the Southeastern Raptor Center Birds of Prey Show on March 23 and Huntsville Blooms March 15 – April 30. Don’t miss the Spring Plant Sale from April 15-17. Watch for the appearance of fluttering wings at the Purdy Butterfly House, the largest seasonal butterfly house in the nation, which opens on May 1. n

The Artisan Wine Society’s Sparkling Holiday Event was presented on December 9, 2015 at Artisan Twickenham Square Apartments.

The Artisan Wine Society is one of two North Alabama Chapters of the American Wine Society. The Artisan Wine Chapter represents residents of Artisan—people from beginner to expert who love to learn about wine. On the second Wednesday of each month, a different wine, varietal or wine region is featured and includes tasting, pairings and education.

The monthly event was the brainchild of Artisan resident Marjorie DuCote, a retired rocket scientist and past president of the American Wine Society, who loves to share her passion and appreciation of wines with the other residents. The residents also find it a wonderful way to network and meet neighbors.

The Carillon Club celebrated their annual Christmas luncheon at the Ledges on Wednesday, December 9. Edna Block and Alexis Parker served as chairpersons. Sharon Doviet and Chris Russell hosted a reception at their home to raise awareness about The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology. The company provides life-changing and potentially life-saving answers to children and families. During the event, the couple announced their decision to include HudsonAlpha in their will and encouraged their guests to consider the possibility of following their lead.

“Sharon and I are excited to invest in nonprofits where the impact of our giving will compound and grow over time,” said Russell, Senior VP of Wealth Management and Private Banking for Cadence Bank and a member of HudsonAlpha’s Professional Advisor Council.

The food was catered by rising creative talent, Chef Rene Boyzo of Gorham’s Bluff, and his wife April.
