Welcome to 2020 Huntsville! As a child I imagined 2020 as being futuristic like the Jetsons. Everyone would be jetting around in their own personal spacecraft.

Aside from the spacecraft, we are virtually there. FaceTiming, text messaging, grocery delivery, access to medical professionals through smart phones, 3D printing and cars that drive themselves qualify as futuristic I do believe.

Time to clean up the confetti and wash up the champagne flutes! The new year is here. Though it seems like the next title of a sci-fi movie from my childhood – it’s really 2020. As I look forward to the upcoming months, one of my goals is get physically stronger. Sure, my motivation is to lose weight and be healthier, but I’d also like to be able to pull on my socks without wrenching my back. Stronger.

Speaking of resolutions, our resolution for this issue was to feature information that helps achieve balance – Body, Mind and Spirit. We gathered local experts and tidbits of advice to bring about harmony in work, rest, fun and enrichment.

We shine our Spotlight on Madison Mayor Paul Finley, who gives insight into his city and its growth. At Centerstage is local artist Lucy Thomas, who describes herself as “born to create.”

As event season heated up, we were out in force, cameras poised, ready to capture the people and moments that mean so much. From the caped superheroes at the UCP Fairytale Ball to the tuxedoed and gowned superheroes at the Margarita Ball, our city shows up to help those less fortunate, and we’re proud to be a part of it all.

The Huntsville Margarita Society gathered 2,400 of its closest friends for the 24th Annual Margarita Ball November 23 at the VBC South. Among the guests was Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle. The event serves to accept toys on behalf of 24 local nonprofit organizations, which support a better Christmas for thousands of North Alabama children. This year’s event brought in 5152 toys, surpassing any previous event.

With fare by Rosie’s; Tim’s Cajun Kitchen; The Brick; Local Taco; Olde Town Coffee; Big Foot’s Little Donuts; VBC; US Foods; Luciano’s; guests danced the night away to tunes spun by Party Nation. Photos by Steve Babin The 44th Annual Taste of Huntsville was held on October 1 at the Von Braun Center South Hall to celebrate the hospitality industry, restaurants and beverage vendors while raising funds for two charities.

With more than 1,500 in attendance, the organizers extended a special thanks to the sponsors, plus the approximately 35 restaurants and vendors who provided the food and beverages for “tasting.” Alabama Party Pros was on hand to entertain guests.

“This year, the Taste of Huntsville event raised $20,000 for two amazing local charities who support our community - Kids to Love Foundation and Downtown Rescue Mission,” stated Jessica Knox, the 2019 Taste Chairperson. n

The event featured a VIP Bourbon Tasting with high end cigars, hors d’oeuvres and a private bourbon auction. The latter portion of the evening offered a silent auction, musical entertainment and a cigar area.

Proceeds benefited the Riley Center, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide comprehensive services using a multidisciplinary approach to fulfill the urgent need for earlier diagnosis and treatment for children and their families faced with autism. Because funding is limited due to lack of medical coverage and financial restraint, Rocket City Riley Fest provides much-needed support. n

Photos by Steve Babin A sold-out crowd of 6,500 runners from across North Alabama gathered for the 16th annual Liz Hurley Ribbon Run on October 19 at Huntsville Junior High School.

The event included a Survivors’ Walk, which had a “walk of champions” feel as thousands of 5K runners and walkers cheered on more than 350 breast cancer survivors. The 5K race followed. All proceeds benefit not-for-profit Madison Hospital Breast Center, enabling the Foundation to purchase a new 3D tomosynthesis mammography machine, making breast cancer easier to detect, particularly in dense breast tissue.

WAFF 48 news anchor Liz Hurley established the Liz Hurley Breast Cancer Fund at Huntsville Hospital Foundation in 1999 following her own fight against breast cancer.

Thanks to generous supporters of the fund, more than $5 million has been raised to support breast cancer awareness programs and to equip Huntsville and Madison Hospitals’ Breast Centers with the latest diagnostic technology. n

Nearly 725 patrons, guests, friends and family attended the formal presentation and enjoyed “Unforgettable Elegance.” Rosemary Latham chaired this year’s Ball.

Symphony Ball guests were serenaded by the cello music of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra’s Ariana Arcu in the foyer of the North Hall as they arrived.

The focal point of the room was an opulent presentation stage that made the perfect setting for the presentation of the 2019 Debutantes. Carl Casiday, of Lola’s Gifts and Flowers in Sheffield, Ala., designed the décor.

UCP’s Fairytale Ball

Photos by Steve Babin UCP held its 2nd annual Fairytale Ball on November 16 at the Roundhouse. The event raised awareness and funds for United Cerebral Palsy's mission of enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities and promoting their independence, self-sufficiency and full citizenship in the community.

The 250 guests included the event chair, Dr. Adam Hott; UCP Board Chair and Expanding Solutions Expert and Digital Applications Lead for Educational Outreach for HudsonAlpha.

The event included fare by Corporate Dining Concepts; elaborate sets, superheroes and princesses portrayed by actors and volunteers from the James Clemens High School Theatre Department; live sword fighting demonstrations by Rocket City Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA); and music by Metropolitan DJ. Conditioned Air Solutions gifted each guest with a lighted snowflake wand. The many sponsors included Chase Animal Hospital, Crossflow Technologies, Bryant Bank and Smith Family Clinic, to name a few.

Barktoberfest Supports Felines & Canines

Photos by Jessa Harris The second annual fundraiser to support Felines and Canines Hunter Stephenson Rescue Center was on October 25 at the downtown Huntsville home of Charlie and Candy Stephenson. The event is the largest fundraiser for the organization.

With around 300 in attendance, the event was made possible by Premiere “Pack Leader” Sponsor MAG Aerospace along with “Top Dog” Sponsor Heather and Knox Williams of Mercedes Benz of Huntsville.

Finding Spiritual Balance Each hour holds 60 minutes, each day 24 hours, each week 7 days, each year 365 days. We are all gifted with the exact amount of time. How best will we use that gift when time becomes blocks of activities called work, family, church and social obligations, shopping, banking, health care, that we juggle daily, hoping we don’t drop any of them? How do we even consider the notion of spiritual balance? We remind ourselves, often, that we are human beings, not human doings.

We are beloved children of a loving Creator who desires our well-being, and practicing spirituality is part of our wholeness. Spirituality is simply the process of traveling our individual journeys with the awareness that there is more to us than our hard work, accolades, fit bodies, and accomplishments. Whether we label it soul, spirit, or personality, that part of us that makes us unique deserves the same time and attention we give our bodies and minds.

If New Year’s resolutions are any indication, we do fairly well attending to our bodies. We only get one body, so exercise and nutrition are indeed important, but our bodies do not make up the whole of us. They are the temporary housing we have while on this earth.

Our minds, thoughts, interests and opinions make us individuals. If we are careful about what we put in our bodies, then we also pay attention to what we put in our

minds. If we fill them with fear and negativity, we become fearful and negative people. If we choose instead to fill them with confidence and positivity, we become confident and positive people who can impact the world and make it a better place.

What about our spirits? We are most likely to neglect them in the juggling of our time-blocks, yet they are an essential part of our well-being. They connect us to something bigger than ourselves, whether God, Christ, a Higher Power, or the Universe, and our spirits seek to be tended to just as much as our bodies and minds.

How do we tend to the spirit? The first step to balance is to practice daily attention. What feeds us and gives us joy? Watching a sunset, walking with a child, meditating or praying, creating, gardening, or worshipping? Pay attention.

The second step is to honor the first step, to make then time to feed our souls as intentionally as we make our appointments to the gym or spa. Tending to our spiritual life is that important because our spirits are part of us eternally.

We are all on the balancing beam together. Sometimes we slip off, but we can always get back on. Each day is a new opportunity to stop the juggling for a moment and listen to the loving invitation of our spirits. Doing so will bless us and make us a blessing to others.

The Body: Achieving Health The body is a perfect design. Just the image of each system and its synergistic ability to function is beyond comprehension. A common mistake by many people, including our medical community, is to think of the body in “parts” rather than as a whole.

There is a definitive connection between all parts, including mind, body and spirit, that controls our body’s ability to stay in balance. Emotions can trigger physiological responses within the body. Body dysfunctions can trigger psychological responses within the brain. You get the idea. So how do achieve balance in all the systems?

Often times it can be the simplest of things that create balance, synergy and calm.

If you are struggling either physically, emotionally, spiritually or all of the above, dig really deep and focus on the root of this discomfort. Don’t focus on the symptoms.

Symptoms are a byproduct of a dysfunction. This is NOT the easy button we are so accustomed to in our way of life both medically and socially. There is not a

A quick piece of advice that has never failed me is to GET OUTSIDE. Get away from the traffic, the TV, the phones, the powerlines – all of it. Take a simple walk in the beauty of nature. Breathe deeply and fill your lungs. Take notice of the immediate change in your body, mind and spirit. This is a real phenomenon. Changing your internal frequencies (yes, we are an electrical system too) to more closely match their root (the Earth’s frequency) can produce physical and emotional changings almost immediately. But you have to tune into your WHOLE body, which includes mind and spirit. Quit taking yourself apart into pieces and imaging the divine design in all its perfect glory. Then go on with your day!

The Mind: Achieving Clarity and Well-being Most of us want more balance. We chase it in regard to work, our families, friends, hobbies, and our health. And it’s difficult to find because of the expectations we have of ourselves and that of others. But maybe it’s time we start pursuing harmony instead.

Harmony implies different instruments playing together to create something pleasant. To find it we begin with the conviction that we should care for ourselves mentally, spiritually, physically, and emotionally. We pay attention to our hearts in pursuing harmony. So rather than start our days with a list of things to do, we plan who we want to be.

The Gothic Guild is pleased to announce that 45 young ladies will participate in the 2020 Victorian Cotillion Club, a program sponsored by the Gothic Guild. The Victorian Cotillion Club was chartered in 1985. Each year, members are given five weeks of instruction emphasizing the timeless social graces that continue to befit today’s lifestyle. Social activities of the Victorian Cotillion will include a formal mother-daughter tea, a formal dinner at Valley Hill Country Club and a fatherdaughter luncheon at The Ledges. The Victorian Cotillion Dinner Dance will be held at the VBC North Hall on March 14, 2020. The members of the Victorian Cotillion Club must be 15 years of age and enrolled as a sophomore in a high school in Madison County. Other criteria for selection include a good academic record as well as demonstration of leadership through participation in school, church, social and civic activities. The purpose of the Gothic Guild is to promote the cultural, educational and historical preservation of Huntsville and Madison County. Proceeds from this year’s events will benefit Lincoln Village.

In her talk, Nour discussed Orientalism: The Allure of North Africa and the Near East – Masterworks from the Dahesh Museum of Art. The exhibit explores how artists from both Europe and America represented the cultures and peoples of Turkey, the Middle East, and North Africa – both real and imagined – during the 19th century.

Nour specializes in academic research of European art of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and Orientalist art.

Lucy Thomas never had a choice whether or not to create. Be it music, theatre, textiles or painting, “making” was a need just as powerful as sleeping or eating.

For the last 50 years, she has done different types of creating in many different mediums, all culminating in the joy of two-dimensional fine art painting. Now an accomplished artist, with work in galleries across the Southeast, she returns to her roots by teaching art in the Title One Jackson County schools as a volunteer. Her floral shop, Lucy’s, is in Scottsboro and she divides her time between the store, her primary residence in Huntsville, and Fayetteville, Tenn. where her husband lives. She has one very well-loved teenage son and a whole bunch of rescued animals.

EVENT: I read that though you’ve experienced art in other forms throughout your life, painting is a fairly new venture for you. What inspired you to branch into this medium?

LT: It’s almost like I have a creative checklist in my brain that I am trying to get through before I die. A rough life patch, which included being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes then needing an insulin pump, somehow kicked my creativity into high gear. I mean I just lost 10 years off my life but once I shook it off, I picked up a paint brush.Now, at 52, I have shown my work at galleries across the Southeast. If anyone had told me I would be teaching art classes at the Huntsville Museum of Art I would have thought they were nuts. But here I am!

EVENT: What do you love about teaching art?

LT: I think everyone has some creativity in their soul. Sometimes it has to be coaxed out but once it makes an appearance, the result is pretty cool. It feels pretty good to be a part of that.

EVENT: What advice do you give your students?

LT: Don’t be afraid.

EVENT: What do you love most about Huntsville?

LT: How much the value of my house has gone up in the last three years! And how the arts scene has taken off.

EVENT: Favorite Huntsville hangout?

LT: Anywhere Josh Allison or Josh and Judy are playing. Especially when my handsome husband and teenage son are with me. In March my favorite hangout will be the Church Street Wine Shoppe. They have invited me to have a show there.

Spotlight Paul Finley is the mayor of the city of Madison. He has lived in Madison since 1995 and raised his family there.

He was elected for his first term as mayor in 2008.

EVENT: Where are you from?

PF: I’m originally from Kentucky, my family still lives up there. I’m a graduate of Murray State University in Murray, Ky. with a bachelor’s degree in marketing.

EVENT: What brought you to this area?

PF: Opportunity. I had friends who had come down this way. I came here in 1988 and took a sales job with a commodity chemical company. I did that for 10 years before I moved on to other jobs throughout the Tennessee Valley and eventually started my own marketing firm.

EVENT: What inspired you to get involved with the city government in Madison?

PF: What inspired me was a community service project that I was a part of, that in turn helped me understand how city government works. The more I became involved, the more I recognized that maybe it needed to work a different way. Because of that, in 2008 I looked for anyone else who believed the same thing.

And while others believed it, no one else was willing to run. I felt like it was a good time in my life to use some of the skills that could help our city, in taking it in the direction that many of us believed we needed to go.

EVENT: What are your contributions (your office’s contributions) to the tremendous growth that Madison is experiencing?

PF: Madison is a good team player. We recognize the role that we have in the overall Tennessee Valley. It’s no secret that we’re a thriving and growing suburb.

We’ve been ranked the number one city in Alabama for the last three years. That is because we are part of the Tennessee Valley, we have fantastic schools; and people are close to their work. Our focus will continue to be on improving traffic flow, improving our parks and recreation facilities, and continuing to improve the quality of life in our area.

EVENT: What are your immediate and future plans for Madison?

PF: We implemented a growth plan in 2012 and we continue to work to follow what the plan set forth.

Connectivity – more green space, and more green ways – were the largest things that people in our city said would enhance their quality of life; plus, the need for improved road structure. We’ve worked hard in the last 10 years on our ability to move traffic, and to connect our city, so you don’t always have to be in a vehicle to get where you want to go.

Managing growth is a tough thing. We recognize that we’re going to grow. We’re the tenth largest city in

Alabama, with over 50,000 citizens. But it must be a controlled growth. We continue to follow our growth policy. With that, we’ll try to keep growth manageable, so that our schools can keep up. When you’re the second-best school district in Alabama and the 44th in the nation, people are going to continue to come.

My middle son Tanner is 23 and graduated from UAH where he played four years of basketball for Lennie Acuff. He felt like he could continue to play, and he’s now playing for Durham University in Durham, England. He’s getting his master’s degree in HR and playing basketball.

We’ve had a focus on generating more sales tax which allows money that the mayor and city council need to put toward these projects.

My youngest son Kyle is 20 and is in his third year at UAB in nursing school. He hopes to come back here as a neonatal nurse working at one of the local hospitals.

Going forward, there’s no question that we look to take the multi-use venue that houses our Rocket City Trash Pandas and use that anchor to have a fantastic first season and follow that up with many more – to help the overall area grow; to bring in businesses of quality while also generating the revenue we need to drive the city forward.

I’m proud of all three of them, but I’m most proud that they’re young men who understand that it’s important to give more than you take; that they appreciate the value of the educations that they’ve all three worked hard and obtained scholarships for. n

We’re going work hard on what we’ve already begun – we’ve supported our schools with helping pass a property tax referendum that allows them to build the infrastructure needed to keep up with the city’s growth.

We will continue to complement them as we look forward in the next five to seven to ten years and continue to manage growth in the best way we can.

We have as strong of team as we have ever had in Madison. We have a council and department heads that understand what we’re trying to accomplish, and where we’re headed. We work well collaboratively – we’re getting a lot of things done that are actionable. People can see the difference.

EVENT: What do you like most about living in the Tennessee Valley?

PF: Right now, what I love about living in this area is that my adult children can find ways to stay here.

What I love about it is that they love it. They, as millennials, find opportunities here. Part of it goes back to the roles that we have in our city, and for this overall Tennessee Valley, that we can’t be everything to everyone, but we are absolutely a fantastic place for families to grow up together, to have top-quality schools and job opportunities, and to do it in an area that has the Palmer Parks and the Dublin Parks where the kids can play sports.

My oldest son is living in Five Points in downtown Huntsville because it’s closer to the action for him, but he’s still here, which is an important thing for me.

EVENT: That answer leads to the next question.

Would you like to talk about your sons?

PF: My oldest, Tyler is 26. He’s an Auburn graduate and went to UAH for graduate school. He’s now working for Teledyne contracting with NASA and working on the space shuttle.

13 Voices of Our Times- Mary Badham 7 – 9 p.m, Huntsville Museum of Art This annual series brings people of note from the areas of the arts, academia, publishing, politics and more to the Huntsville Museum of Art for candid, in-depth discussions and presentations.

Mary was chosen for the role of “Scout” at the age of ten, with no prior acting experience. She won an Oscar nomination for best-supporting actress. At that time, she was the youngest person ever to do so. After To Kill a Mockingbird, 1962, she appeared in two other films, This Property is Condemned, 1966, with Robert Redford and Natalie Wood; and Let’s Kill Uncle, 1966. She had TV appearances on Dr. Kildare “Sister Mike,” 1963; and Twilight Zone: The Bewitchin’ Pool, 1964, before retiring from acting to pursue an education as a teenager.

Over the years, she maintained close contact with Gregory Peck – Atticus, and occasionally accompanied him on his one-man-show lecture tours and award ceremonies. In April of 1997, Mary had a vision to reunite the cast and creative team for a national satellite broadcast to U.S. schools. Mary now maintains a busy schedule lecturing to audiences internationally about the book and the film. Her interest is in expanding knowledge about the film’s message of social injustice and to ensure that each generation of students can experience the film’s impact.

The construction from 2019 brought us new hotels, with more to come, as well as the awesome new Mars Music Hall at the Von Braun Center. This state-of-the-art facility will host countless events and activities which will add to the quality of life of residents and visitors alike. The U.S. Space & Rocket Center is celebrating an anniversary of their own this year. March 17 marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of Earth’s Largest Space Museum, and Alabama’s most visited paid tourist attraction. Check out the history of the American space program and catch a glimpse into what’s on the horizon for space exploration. The INTUITIVE® Planetarium is a world-class facility that we’re fortunate to get to enjoy and it will be celebrating its first anniversary in February.

The Rocket City Trash Pandas’ inaugural season is fast approaching. The first game is scheduled for April 15, and Toyota Field in Town Madison is looking great. The stadium will be the centerpiece in a mixed-use development slated to include, living, shopping, dining and recreational facilities.

The Christian Women’s Job Corp held their 17th Annual Circles Luncheon on November 4 at the VBC North Hall. The event raised awareness and financial support for Christian Women's Job Corps of Madison County, AL, Inc. Among the more than 1,000 guests were graduates of the program as well as its current participants.

Flowers and décor were arranged by Kelley Gattis and Melinda Holloway. Keynote Speaker Liz Huntley shared how a few women in her community stepped up to be game changers for her and encouraged the guests to do the same. Sponsors included Pat & Gene Sapp, Cindy & Ron Gray and Crestwood Medical Center.

Executive Director Elaine Dickson stated, “We were reminded of the impact of this ministry when we saw that one of our graduates who attended the event left a donation of money with the note, ‘This is my last ten dollars... I appreciate all you do.’” n

Photos by Steve Babin The 7th annual McLain Surgical Arts Halloween Bash was themed Frightening, Funny & Fantastic. The party is hosted each year by Dr. McLain, his wife Lindsey and the staff at McLain Surgical Arts as a way to give back to the community and thank their clients and referrals. The event was held at the Lumberyard with flowers arranged by Glenn’s Florist. Fabulous entertainment was provided by the band Juice.

Around 175 people attended. Costume winners were Flint River Dental as Shrek and Fiona; John and Beckie Neil as Pennywises from the movie IT; and Jason and Gina Terry as the Joker and Harley Quinn.

Dr. McLain said of the event, “A yearly event where big people get to have fun, dress up, laugh and just enjoy a night out.” n

The 125 guests included Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle; Kim Lewis, Project XYZ CEO and current Board Chair of the Huntsville Madison County Chamber of Commerce. The event was catered by Cotton Row.

In collaboration with Volkswagen’s Drive Bigger Campaign Hiley Volkswagen made a donation of $10,000 to the American Cancer Society in memory of one of their customers, Deborah Gray. The Gray family is friends with Managing Partner, Matt Meyer but they are all avid Volkswagen owners too, with over seven purchases between them. Hiley Volkswagen felt that a donation to American Cancer Society in the month of October was a way to contribute to the ‘greater good’ for Drive Bigger. McCahey continued, “We are so grateful for our Madison/Huntsville community for these last ten years and look forward to serving the community in the future years.” n

The VBC held a special event introducing their newest gem: Mars Music Hall. Held at the VBC’s Propst Arena, the special name reveal event had a tie-in with the season introduction of the Huntsville Havoc hockey team.

“The City of Huntsville is developing at a rapid pace and is constantly attracting out-of-market visitors and enhancing the quality of life for local residents. Adding this size and type of music venue to the heart of the city is an important step in continuing that growth.”

Mars Music Hall will open its doors January 3 with Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit.
