With estate planning, the team at Hawthorn begins by determining where the client is in the process of planning.

Cheers to 2018! You know, as a child in the 70s and 80s, I would dream about what life would be like in the year 2010. What would the world be like? What would my life be like? Would I be married, have kids? We are fast approaching 2020! As a child, the year 2020 was science fiction. I would conjure images of the Jetsons. Many of the science fiction movies and series have accurately predicted the human developments. Face-Timing your brother while you are hiking along the trails of Monte Sano is now a common reality. I mean, we have already surpassed the era of Captain Kirk commanding Scotty to beam him up on the flip phone. Cars are now high-tech computers on wheels. Just what will life be like in another 20 years?

This issue we’ve been covering events from Zara Edwards Art Opening at The Little Green Store, The Liz Hurley Ribbon Run to the Margarita Ball and the BMW Brunch. This past fall, there have been a plethora of events that could peak anyone’s interest. We even had our own little celebration after 10 years in business! Thanks to you, our readership.

Margarita Ball Collects Cache of Toys for Children

November 18 marked the 22nd annual Margarita Ball at the VBC’s South Hall. With 2500 guests, the evening of fun and philanthropy was a major success. The purpose of the ball is to support 22 local non-profits by collecting toys from attendees.

The event was catered by 11 local food vendors with entertainment from Party Nation from Atlanta. “We couldn’t do this without our partnership with the VBC,” said one of the Margarita Ball directors, Brandon Price. With too many restaurant sponsors to single out a few, Price also gave recognition to Toys R Us.

Price added, “We feel like this year was our best party in years! Our guests outdid themselves and we collected 3770 toys at an estimated value of $150,000. That will help brighten the Christmas season for so many children around North Alabama.” n

Anyone who has lived in or even visited Huntsville is probably familiar with the Von Braun Center. As the premier civic and cultural performance center in this and surrounding areas, the VBC has made an impact on hundreds of thousands of individuals from across the globe.

Mission, Purpose & Principles

The mission statement: The Von Braun Center is a multi-purpose facility with the primary objective of facilitating and promoting events and activities in addition to generating economic benefit and improving the quality of life for the Huntsville community and surrounding areas.

The Von Braun Center is an organization dedicated to providing the highest quality of service to every patron who enters the facility. The VBC’s business is service and their goal is to provide a friendly, clean and safe environment for patrons in order to maximize the enjoyment of every event they attend. Executive Director and CEO Steve Maples leads the organization by the philosophy “give every guest more than they are expecting.” Marketing and Public Relations Manager Brooke Izzo stated, “As our motto we use one of Wernher von Braun’s famous quotes: ‘I have learned to use the word impossible with the greatest caution.’”

Background & History In the early 1960’s, members of the community felt that Huntsville could improve upon the arts facilities available at the time. Martha Rambo, affiliated with the Symphony, Elvira Glover of the Art League, Martha Hamm with Community Chorus, Dexter Nilsson of Little Theatre and others began to voice the need for housing and performance space for the arts in Huntsville. Contact was made with the Hanes family of Winston-Salem where a successful Arts Council had been created. As a result, the Huntsville Arts Council was born. The collective desire for a cultural center building gathered momentum.

In 1965, the Public Building Authority contracted with Booz-Allen-Hamilton to make plans for the construction of a civic arts center. The original concept was for a theatre, exhibition space and an art museum. Three prominent recommendations of this project were that a civic advisory board be established; the site should be downtown and; most importantly, that a large arena-style auditorium would be essential for the long-term success of the facility. And successful it was!

The doors to the Von Braun Center opened on March 14, 1975 for the Beaux Arts Ball sponsored by the Arts Council. As the building neared completion, famous Huntsville artist Ed Monroe donated a portrait of Wernher Von Braun to the center. Dr. and Mrs. Von Braun were visibly moved at his stunning work. To this day, the portrait still hangs in the Mark C. Smith Concert Hall.

The Von Braun Center is a multi-purpose facility which includes Propst Arena, Mark C. Smith Concert, The Playhouse and over 170,000 flexible meeting spaces all under one roof. The center offers full in-house services such as catering, concession, audio, visual and exhibitor services. The VBC promotes three community events throughout the year: The Von Brewski Beer Festival, Heads-n-Tails Crawfish Boil and the Family Fun Festival & Expo.

Upcoming 2018 Expansion & Season Izzo emphasized that the ultimate goal of the upcoming expansion project is to better serve their guests. Highlights of the project include: The addition of a new ballroom/multi-purpose space that will include an

outdoor terrace; renovation of the existing North Hall; the addition of 14,000 square feet of meeting space; a new lobby; a new concourse that will seamlessly connect to the existing South Hall concourse and the Embassy Suites hotel; extension of the existing concourse leading from the Concert Hall and Arena to the newly constructed facilities; the addition of a new full-service kitchen; the extension of a South Hall garage under the newly constructed facilities; and the addition of a 1,200-guestaccommodating music hall and food/beverage venue.

The upcoming 2018 season is packed with stellar performances, events and acts that will not disappoint; Huntsville Havoc Hockey, numerous Broadway Theatre League performances (including The Sound of Music, The Book of Mormon,) comedian Jim Gaffigan, Wynonna & The Big Noise, and Celtic Woman, just to name a few!

Company Credentials & Involvement The Von Braun Center believes in supporting the community by involvement with local organizations.

Maples grew up attending the Boys & Girls Club, and

continues to serve as-needed in many capacities. He was the recipient of the Leaders & Legends Award and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Huntsville Sports Commission and on the Lodging Recruitment Committee. The Von Braun Center is a major supporter of the hospitality industry with memberships in local and national organizations.

Longevity in Leadership The VBC’s senior management team is made up of eight individuals with more than 200 years combined service.

In May of 2017, the VBC celebrated 40 Years of Steve Maples. Maples is the first full-time employee to reach 40 years at the facility. He started as a part-time worker at the age of 18 and was working full time for the Von Braun Center in the Engineering Department within 2 years. Over the last 40 years Maples has seen the facility go through many changes while serving as Engineering Manager, Operations Director, Associate Director and now Executive Director and CEO. He attributes VBC’s success to a team effort. Izzo stated, “We are honored to work with and for someone like Steve Maples.”

Impacting the Community & Environment The VBC generated an estimated $72 million in economic impact in fiscal year 2015-2016. Over 775,000 people attended a variety of events held at the center throughout the year. This reflects an 8.6% increase over the previous fiscal year. Large conventions increase spending which overflows into all sectors of the local economy, bringing new tax dollars and supporting many jobs throughout the community.

In October of 2008, the Von Braun Center kicked off its Recycling and Conservation Initiative Program and it has been going strong ever since. The Von Braun Center diverted 162.12 tons of trash from the local landfill by transporting their trash to the Waste-to-Energy facility via their waste provider, Republic Services.

Taking energy savings seriously, the Von Braun Center commits to achieve at least a 20% reduction in energy consumption within the next 10 years. “The Von Braun Center is serious about tackling wasted energy,” said Johnny Hunkapiller, Certified Energy Manager and the Von Braun Center’s Director of Projects. Hunkapillar continued, “The Von Braun Center campus is poised to grow significantly in the next few years and we want to make sure our energy expenses stay as low as possible.” n

The Alzheimer’s Association presented the 2nd annual Night Under the Purple Stars Gala on November 7 at the Huntsville Museum of Art. The event served as a time to celebrate and honor the lives of people impacted by Alzheimer’s and other dementias, as well as their caregivers.

The Venezuelan-born, American painter draws inspiration from a bi-cultural background – a mixture of British and Spanish parents, and from years of living in the South.

Lowry stated, “Inclined to satisfy a need for visual and aesthetic stimulation, my depictions are vivid, colorful and at times intricate compositions; decorative and playful metaphors that are centered around the inner exploration of emotions, desires, basic human needs and the urban stages in which such themes typically occur.”

Lowry debuted several new pieces in this exhibit.

Scott McLain is a member of the Huntsville community who believes in contributing his time and working hard on initiatives to make Huntsville a better place. Although busy with a lively commercial real estate brokerage and management business, McLain also is active in the community, state, and nation on a great many boards, foundations, and councils.

EVENT: Are you a native of Huntsville?

SM: I call myself a “native by memory,” meaning I don’t remember living anywhere else. I was born in Montgomery when my father was in the Air Force Reserve, just before he attended the University of Alabama Law School. My parents moved to Huntsville in 1959 where my mother taught school and ultimately became assistant administrator at Huntsville Hospital and later mayor of Mooresville. My late father, Gene McLain practiced law for more than a decade, then served in the Alabama House of Representatives and Senate before running for governor in 1974. He started a commercial real estate business the same year.

Spotlight I have no intention of retiring from this service any time soon. I have more than once put myself in “time out” for a year so that I can return to serve fresh tenure and start the process again.

EVENT: Tell about your family.

SM: I have been married to Yolanda McLain for twenty years and between us we have six children. All adults now, five daughters remain living and proudly serve in volunteer capacities in their circles. We live in southeast Huntsville. n

EVENT: What is your educational background?

SM: I attended Huntsville City Schools and graduated from Huntsville High where I was president of the Student Council. I then attended Tulane University and later Duke University where I graduated with a degree in Public Policy Studies. Following college, I attended and graduated from Cumberland School of Law in Birmingham, afterwards clerking for a federal judge for a year and then practicing law in Huntsville for two more years.

In 1974, I joined my father in what is now Coldwell Banker Commercial McLain Real Estate, full service commercial real estate firm. After a number of years, however, I longed to be in the classroom again and completed the Harvard University Graduate School of Design Advanced Management Development Program. I also served on the Alumni Council there for nine years.

EVENT: What philanthropic projects are dear to you and why?

SM: After joining my father, I started an active volunteer career as well. I have taken this service to heart and have served on nearly seventy boards since returning to Huntsville from law school, serving as chair of many of them.

I am proud to have served on each board, but my education service is especially important to me - having served as a long-time member and former chair of The Schools Foundation and also as founding member of the A+ Foundation, a statewide education support organization. I am an education junkie, I guess. Any problem we face, we can address with education. Education is the answer to every problem.

I have also enjoyed service on the Museum Board of the City of Huntsville, where I served as chair of the board when the new museum was built in Big Spring Park.

At the time the location of the building was somewhat controversial but as an urban planner by study, I helped the community understand that a museum is about the only building that a community should put in a park. The Museum is now a focal point for activities in Big Spring Park.

I enjoy statewide service as board member of PARCA, the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama, the state’s only good government think tank. Leadership Alabama is also important. I have been enthusiastic for the program, and am a graduate of Class 1, and served on the board several times since.

There are dozens of other board and committees, including charitable and health and community and education and leadership, on which I serve or have served. These efforts are not at the expense of time or a diversion from family or work, but rather are rich opportunities to contribute time, funds, and leadership to ensure that Huntsville is the great community in which we all want to live. I am honored when I serve on a board. That board is inviting me to share my skills and knowledge and leadership for its important mission. My time and energy there are worthy ways for me to help and sustain our community. Huntsville is better when we all contribute to the causes that are so important to this community.

Extensions Extensions are a great way to add length, volume or both to your hair. Extensions offer so many benefits, like enhancing thinning areas, correcting a haircut, creating highlights or lowlights or changing your hair color.

Anyone and everyone is a candidate for extensions. For a full set of extensions for length it typically takes 2-3 packs.

When creating volume, it takes 1-2 packs depending on your desired look.

Extensions offer so many benefits, like enhancing thinning areas, correcting a haircut, creating highlights or lowlights or changing your hair color.

Matching the extensions has never been easier - with 23 colors including balayage and rooted tape-in extensions.

The extensions are comfortably secured by a non-slip medical-grade adhesive. The tabs stay locked in until they are ready to be moved which is typically after six to eight weeks. Your extensions are re-useable up to nine months depending on the at-home care. Our extensions are color- and heat-safe up to 360 degrees. The extensions come in 12, 16, 20 inches.

After the installation of your extensions, you cannot shampoo for 48 hours. When taking care of your extensions, to help keep the longevity, we recommend using keratin complex shampoo and conditioner along with keratin infusion cream, wet brush and pureology 21 spray.

When returning to have your extensions moved we use a bond remover that breaks down the adhesive, and the extensions gently slide out where we remove the old tape and apply new. (This appointment usually takes longer than your first visit.) Once your hair has been shampooed and blown dry, we will put the extensions back in.

Many can benefit from microblading. For example, those who would like more eyebrow definition or to extend and thicken brows; anyone with little or no brows including men; people who need to fill in scars or gaps; and those who would like brow strokes over a previously tattooed area.

Pre-existing conditions to consider would be pregnancy, breastfeeding, diabetes and blood-thinning medications. Other considerations are that candidates must not be sunburned, must wait three days after hair removal or waxing and must wait two weeks after a chemical peel. Those taking Accutane or other strong retinoids must wait six months after completion of that medication. Candidates must wait two months after having Botox or Disport treatments. A doctor’s written note is required for anyone who has autoimmune, circulatory or bleeding disorders.

Here’s what to expect. At the beginning we will provide a thorough consultation to discuss expectations and results. The artist then draws on the eyebrow shape. The

brows are measured perfectly to compliment your unique face shape. Next, we apply an anesthetic to reduce discomfort. While the area is numbing, we pick out the perfect color. Pigment is worked into each stroke to define the brow. The area is cleaned thoroughly and then a healing cream is applied. You will receive enough healing cream and gentle wash to last you until area is healed. Treatment my take 2-4 hours.

When preparing for microblading: No coffee, alcohol, or energizing drinks on the day of treatment; no aspirin, Niacin, vitamin E or ibuprofen 24 hours before, and no Omega 3 (fish oil) before treatment. Also, it’s best to avoid salty foods 24 hours before microblading.

While healing, follow these after-care instructions: Immediately after procedure the area will appear darker and more dramatic. It takes about six weeks for the color to look softer and more natural. Apply healing cream in the morning and at night until you run out of cream. Avoid scratching or picking at area while healing. Avoid hot showers and keep your face away from shower head. Always avoid chemical peels, Retin-A or glycol acid near brow area. Use sunscreen after healing is complete.

As our skin ages, there are changes we can make with makeup application to make us look younger and more radiant, feel better and smile. As my mother says, “Carry yourself like a queen and you will be treated like one.”

I’ve been a esthetician for 25 years and love helping women feel better about their skin and makeup. Healthy skin and beautiful makeup make a woman feel more confident.

Skin care doesn’t have to be complicated. Cleanse, tone, treat and moisturize are the simple steps to better skin. Consistency is the key. The way one takes care of her skin in her teens and 20s predict the way it is going to look in her 40s and 50s.

Everyone needs to use a gentle cleanser, whether acne prone or mature. The most important cream to leave on the skin is a corrective or treatment cream. Corrective creams are usually retinol, fruit acid or vitamin C based. With each decade, our collagen production slows down - that is the protein network in our skin that leaves it firm and elastic. We need more help as we age. These creams stimulate collagen production at a faster rate. They also stimulate moisture where we are drier.

Makeup is a good way to finish our look. Less is more. Try to stay away from products that contain petroleum, mineral oil, paraben and paraffin. They are cheap “fillers” in makeup that clog and age the skin. As we age, we need to create a dewy look on our skin. Lighter colors for the eyes and lips are flattering. As we get older, harsh dark colors tend to be aging.

Remember, one of the main things about applying makeup is blending and using good brushes. Also apply a little at a time. It is easier to add more than to take away if too much is applied.

The Huntsville Hospital Foundation hosted the 14th annual Liz Hurley Ribbon Run on October 21. 6150 runners and walkers joined together in support of breast cancer awareness and prevention. The event, featuring a 5K run and Survivors’ Walk, was established in honor of local news anchor and breast cancer survivor, Liz Hurley.

Ribbon Run proceeds benefit the Foundation’s Liz Hurley Breast Cancer Fund, which has raised more than $4 million to support breast cancer awareness programs and to equip Huntsville and Madison Hospitals’ Breast Centers with the latest diagnostic technology. Proceeds from this year’s run will be used to purchase a 3D tomosynthesis mammography machine. With this technology, multiple 3-dimensional pictures of the breast are taken, making breast cancer easier to detect, particularly in dense breast tissue. n

2018 Gothic Guild Victian Cotillion Club Members The Gothic Guild is pleased to announce that 36 young ladies will participate in the 2018 Victorian Cotillion Club, a program sponsored by the Gothic Guild.

The Victorian Cotillion Club was chartered in 1985. Each year, members are given five weeks of instruction emphasizing the timeless social graces that continue to befit today’s lifestyle. Social activities of the Victorian Cotillion will include a formal mother-daughter tea, a formal dinner at Valley Hill Country Club and a father-daughter luncheon at the Ledges. The Victorian Cotillion Dinner Dance will be held at the VBC North Hall on March 10, 2018.

The members of the Victorian Cotillion Club must be 15 years of age and enrolled as a sophomore in a high school in Madison County. Other criteria for selection include a good academic record as well as demonstration of leadership through participation in school, church, social and civic activities.

The purpose of the Gothic Guild is to promote the cultural, educational and historical preservation of Huntsville and Madison County. Proceeds from this year’s events will benefit Burritt Museum.

Danielle Day Damson was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio where from an early age she received scholarships to the Art Academy of Cincinnati. She graduated from The Ohio State University with a BSID in Product Design. Recruited by a Huntsville, Alabama company, she moved here to work in product and exhibit design.

With a love of all things classical, she has co-founded Protégé Atelier in Huntsville to foster the return to realism movement. She is a Contemporary Representationalist and her subject matters range from still life, to figurative, landscape and portraiture. A noted artist and honored member of The Oil Painters of America, Portrait Society of America, National Oil and Acrylic Painters' Society, American Women Artists and American Impressionist Society; she has exhibited locally and nationally.

EVENT: Who inspired you to be an artist?

DD: My dad was my inspiration. He was a very gifted watercolor artist.

Most all children love to create, those of us who were lucky enough to have parents who encouraged our early endeavors happily carried on without fear of judgement.

EVENT: What’s the most treasured piece you’ve painted and why?

DD: One of the first portraits I painted was of my dad for my mom. It’s difficult to paint someone you know and love so well after they are no longer with you. So much of yourself goes into a painting of such an intimate subject that it makes it the most difficult and yet the most rewarding.

EVENT: What’s your favorite travel destination?

DD: Africa was definitely my favorite place to visit thus far. One day you are driving to the airport and 24 hours later you are 10 feet from a wild lioness with her cubs. It’s the most surreal encounter I have ever been blessed to experience.

EVENT: Favorite Huntsville hotspot?

DD: Big Spring Park. There is nothing that lifts my mood better than walking my big fluffy dog around the springs- oh the wonderful people you meet with a big fluffy dog!

EVENT: What do you love most about living in Huntsville?

DD: My favorite thing about living in Huntsville is the small town feel with the big city amenities. In today’s crazy world, it’s a great comfort to raise your family in a small-feel community environment.

Tailgating with the Taste of Huntsville The Huntsville/Madison County Hospitality Association (HMCHA) hosted the 42nd annual Taste of Huntsville at the Von Braun Center on Thursday, October 19.

This year’s theme was “Tailgate with the Taste of Huntsville” and guests enjoyed food, drinks, a silent auction and live entertainment from the kids at Merrimack Hall Performing Arts Center.

Over 30 food and beverage companies from Madison County participated in Taste this year. As guests entered into South Hall, they were greeted by an expo-style setup where participant’s booths lined the exterior walls and tables for eating filled the center of the room. Participants decorated their booths to fit the tailgate theme.

The Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guild presented 42 young women on October 28, in the Von Braun Center North Hall at the 54th Symphony Ball. More than 1,050 patrons, guests, friends and family attended the formal presentation. This year’s ball was chaired by Patti Thornton.

The hall was draped in white silk taffeta and bathed in pale pink lighting. Décor was designed by Carl Casiday, of Lola’s of Sheffield.

An invocation was delivered by the Honorable Mark Selby Russell; and Ken Rivenbark, of the Board of Trustees served as Announcer for the Ball. The Symphony Orchestra strings and trumpets provided cocktail hour music, followed by the presentation and waltz with the debutantes and their fathers. The Craig Duncan Orchestra serenaded guests as they danced the night away.

Huntsville Ballet Previews World Class Show

The Huntsville Ballet Company held a reception and preview of Phantom of the Ballet on October 13 to show appreciation of the ballet company’s donors and supporters. The event was organized by the Huntsville Ballet Guild.

Fare was catered by Edgar’s, with Phantom cupcakes made by Huntsville Ballet Guild member Bethany Wing and a Phantom cocktail from SiP. Guests enjoyed a toast to the 2017-2018 season and a preview of the world premiere of Phantom of the Ballet, choreographed by Huntsville Ballet Company artistic director Phillip Otto.

Event organizer Betsy Cunha stated, “We had a fabulous time at the event. The company has a great vibe this year, with a group of eight dancers from Brazil, Cuba, Texas, Connecticut, Maryland, and of course Alabama. It was nice to give our supporters an up-close view of the upcoming performance.” n

The Huntsville Museum of Art celebrated the exhibit “Painting A Nation: Hudson River School Landscapes from the Higdon Collection” with a members’ lecture and reception on October 19.

Around 150 guests attended, including Dr. David Stewart, Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Dr. Stewart discussed the concept of the Hudson River School and the American Dream.

Catered by the HMA Guild, who also arranged flowers and décor, the event was made possible by Lead Sponsors Peter and Betsy Lowe.

More than 160 attendees and volunteers joined hands with Friends, Inc. for the 14th annual Autumn Evening fundraiser on October 27 at Meadow Creek Farm. Guests enjoyed dinner, dancing and the autumn air, all for a good cause. This year’s event raised a record $41,000 benefiting those who are seriously ill or disabled in Madison County, and providing volunteer training, coordination, background screening, for Friends, Inc.’s 125 volunteers.

Catered by The Main Event, the event featured floral arrangements by In Bloom Florist. Shari Poteat decorated with pumpkins and mums. Guests danced to the tunes of the Flashbacks Showband.

Advanced Life Clinics celebrated their 13th Anniversary and Holiday Open House on November 9.

More than 100 guests attended the event that was catered by Lyn’s Gracious Goodness with flowers by Glenn’s of Huntsville. The event was made possible by sponsors: Allergan; Skinceuticals; Obagi and Eclipse Aesthetics.

Under The Christmas Tree’s 33rd Year

Randolph School’s Under the Christmas Tree’s 33rd annual event was November 3-5 at the Von Braun Center’s South Hall.

Under the Christmas Tree is Randolph’s biggest special event annual fundraiser.

The three day market attracts approximately 10,000 shoppers from throughout the region and contributes more than $100,000 to Randolph’s Financial Aid program. Its success is due to a hard-working group of parents, past parents, alumni, and grandparents. n

Women4Women Huntsville Grand Opening

Power of Pink Luncheon and Fashion Show

Some 250 friends and distinguished guests gathered on October 26 to celebrate the opening of Women4Women OBGYN. Mayor Tommy Battle addressed the crowd and helped dedicate the new facility during a ribbon cutting ceremony.

More than 900 attendees gathered at the Power of Pink Luncheon and Fashion show on October 17 at the Ingalls Harbor Pavillion and Event Center. Guests enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of cancer-curing couture presented by Carriage House, DeLoain New York and The Paperchase. Proceeds from the event, combined with the Lee Lott Power of Pink Walk on October 29 benefited Decatur Morgan Hospital Breast Health & Cancer Services. n
