The mission of The Greater Huntsville Humane Society is the humane treatment of all animals. We promote this mission by accepting owner surrenders, rehoming animals from dangerous or neglectful situations, and pulling animals from local and surrounding kill shelters. We also transport animals to partnering shelters in Iowa, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. This transport program allows us to save even more lives!

The Greater Huntsville Humane Society is well on their way to surpassing their adoption goal for 2020. Probably all of you will agree with me that this year has been one for the books.

The pandemic has forced us to change the way we live; examine the things we care about and the priorities in our lives. Most of us are probably glad that this year is almost over. I think it has gone by rather quickly. Maybe that is an age thing.

After an eventless spring, I am happy to report that some semblance of normalcy fell over the summer and we were able to get out and cover some events. Most of the events have been outdoors with social distancing, but there have been a few that were indoors as well – with events held in the safest possible manner to prevent the spread of the virus. Even in our most trying times, there are people all around us who are thinking of others by supporting charitable causes with their time and/or their financial support.

In this issue we feature events from the Junior League of Huntsville Drive By for their new members; His Way - Golden Ticket Dinner, helping those who may struggle with addiction; to Microwave Dave at the City Lights and Stars Concert at Burritt on the Mountain – providing the best view of the city. Happy Holidays Huntsville! This most unusual year is almost at an end. As you look to the celebrations, we hope you’re able to congregate safely and make the most of your gatherings. I know I’ll be holding my family a little closer this season and anticipating the hope of the coming year.

Photos by Stephanie E. Jennings Parrotheads and music lovers everywhere were invited to don their grass skirts, Hawaiian shirts and island wear, and most importantly, their masks. The theme for 2020 was “Charity Starts at Home.” Parrots of the Caribbean is an annual event presented by the Rotary Club of Madison. This year the gathering was held at The Rocket City Trash Panda’s Toyota Field and benefited Madison Hospital for the purchase of a transport ventilator needed to support COVID-19 patients.

The adults-only event featured live music from Calypso Vision, socially distant dancing, dining and drinks along with a silent online auction. Photos by Stephanie E. Jennings His Way Recovery Center’s Golden Ticket Dinner with Rick Burgess was held at the Von Braun Center’s North Hall on August 27. Over 400 people attended this fundraising dinner to meet and hear Rick Burgess deliver a message of hope and share about his own past struggles with addiction. Members of the His Way staff also related stories and information about the work at His Way and the thrift stores, The Saving Way, that support the ministry. WaveLink, Inc. was the event sponsor.

The plated dinner, which included spinach-and-cheese-stuffed chicken and chocolate cake, was catered and served by the VBC, while the decorative table centerpieces were hand-painted by Libby Newman and the greenery was provided by Bridgett Thornton of Fow Wow Designs.

Food, Love and Fellowship: The Boddie Food Ministry

A pandemic will bring out the best or the worst in a community. Many people have lost their livelihood, along with the roofs over their heads and adequate food on their tables. Crisis will also illuminate where needs are the most emergent, calling forth those to serve.

It has been said that “Food is Love.” In the House of Boddie, truer words could never be spoken. For April and Chad Boddie, to prepare food and to feed others is to follow God’s will.

For the Boddies, their mission reaches far beyond feeding the hungry; they also bring compassion and dignity to the table. April makes it a point to treat everyone with courtesy and respect, getting to know everyone, generating an aura of love and kindness.

There are the homeless and the struggling, those who are often treated as invisible. Regardless of how they got in their situation and what their lives were before their circumstances changed –their stories are as varied as human thumbprints – they are not unseen in the eyes of April Boddie.

For the Huntsville native, her mission to serve was reinforced through her work. “Fifteen years ago, I got a job at the Inner-City Church of Christ,” said April.

“My role was assistant life-skills counselor. I got the opportunity to work with homeless people, at-risk teens, single mamas, and I just knew that I loved the aspect of serving and I love the aspect of food.”

The Boddies have been together for 16 years and many refer to them as Uncle Chad and Auntie. “Just because we have that type of vibe and a type a family where everybody is always welcome at our home,” said April. “Wherever we are, we create a space where there is a chair for everyone and enough love to go around. We believe in doing everything with love, so everyone feels love.”

“When we got married, that’s when the food ministry was born,” said April. When the Inner-City Church of Christ decided to partner with the Salvation Army with a “Feed your Neighbor” cookout, they sought out the Boddies. It takes a special talent for preparing meats for the masses and Chad has a reputation of being able to work magic with all types of meats. “Chad is my always go-to guy,” said April. “I’m the one with the culinary arts degree, but he does all the heavy cooking for stuff like that.”

Chad Boddie practically grew up in the kitchen. “My husband is one the best chefs that I know,” said April.

“At a very young age, he learned how to cook. He was always his grandmother’s assistant.” When Chad was about 13 years old, his grandmother got sick. He then became his grandmother’s “hands and feet” in the kitchen.

Although he’s a plumber by trade, Chad is the Director of Facilities for Madison at the Range, an assisted living facility. Most people never get to see him. After going in to work to check on things around 5 or 6 a.m., Chad heads to the Inner-City Church of Christ to prepare the food, long before people start arriving.

Despite having a heart and soul driving the food ministry, there is always a need for continued financial support. “We could not have made any of the cooking possible without the numerous donations from Churches of Christ and local companies,” said April.

Pastor Timmy Smith at the Inner-City Church of Christ also provides a kitchen, as well as a location in which to serve.

The greatest hurdle in the face of COVID-19 is that of perception. “The biggest challenge to me is people seeing only certain jobs as an essential worker’s job,” said April. “We are essential workers and that is why we’re out here still working.” Everyone wears masks and follows the protocols that Governor Kay Ivey has set out for the citizens of Alabama. But, without a food ministry like the Boddies provide, many in the community would be struggling with an even greater problem: hunger.

her wisdom and recipes to teens and young adults over the years. After a few suggestions and the realization that she will not be around forever, April decided to create her very own “guide to life” in the form of a paperback.

Her self-published book, “I Got 5 On It: Beating Around the Bush is for Landscapers.” is filled with practical wisdom, quotes, and of course, recipes. It is often taken for granted that everyone leaves the nest fully equipped with skills needed for the adult world.

Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Boddie’s experience as a life-skills counselor tuned her focus to some of those basic skills that might be lacking in a teen or young adult’s life.

“It is my hope that “I Got 5 On It” will be to this generation the same thing that $5 was to me in my youth,” said April. “It was a little bit of ‘change’ that went a heck of a long way. The value of money has changed, but I pray my advice will be just as valuable as $5 was to me back then.”

“I want to show every child who grew up like I grew up that you can do something to put a ripple in the ocean of change,” said April. n

Photos by Rich Ortiz The City Lights and Stars Concert Sponsor Dinner was held on September 11 at Burritt on the Mountain. The concert series, now in its 27th year, raises funds for children’s educational programs at Burritt.

Around 225 tickets were sold per concert this year to limit attendance, ensuring space for social distancing during the COVID pandemic. Among the guests were long-time Burritt volunteers Phil and Sharlene Coker. Phil is CEO of EOS Defense, which sponsored the event, as well as a board member at Burritt and one of the blacksmiths.

Sharlene uses her creative talents for exhibits and serves on the Burritt Advisory Board.

Walking into KenziB’s brand-new studio on the 3rd floor of Lowe Mill, one enters a world of enchantment and bright colors. The very first thing that catches the eye is a large portrait of her older sister that contains a brilliant wealth of layered imagery. A tire swing. Butterflies. Flowers mimicking flowing hair.

Relocating from Mississippi to Huntsville last October, Kenzie Johnston, the artist known as KenziB, followed her mother and stepfather’s lead when they left Mississippi to open Tom Brown’s Restaurant in Madison. A few months ago, a reception was hosted at the restaurant displaying many of her works. Johnston credits her mom, Ashley Brown as being one of her biggest fans, especially when she decided to shift gears and become an artist.

Art wasn’t Johnston’s first calling. However, four years ago, she experienced something that would significantly impact her future and change the direction of her career. “I love math,” said Johnston. “I had planned to go into architecture or engineering.” Academic requirements inadvertently led her down the path of fine arts. At the college she was attending, it was required that all architecture majors take drawing and basic studio art classes. “I really liked drawing. And I had two teachers that never gave up on me.”

It was then that Johnston got hooked on art and decided to change her major.

“For my thesis proposal, I had to create a show, based on a topic,” said Johnston.

One of her professors challenged her to do something different, something totally outside the box. Her parents had 10 gallons of resin just sitting around, so she began to experiment with it. Working with resin was an exercise in trial by fire.

“I was intimidated by it. The first time I tried it, it got really hot and started smoking. It’s a weird medium to work with. So, I kept researching, kept trying.

In four years, I’ve used 70 gallons of epoxy. I have a room full of mistakes.”

“I like to mix traditional and non-traditional stuff. I layer different mediums to see how they react to different chemicals.” The first of the four-piece thesis proposal is the eye-catching portrait of her sister. “It’s been sitting in Starkville,” said Johnston. “I just brought it to Huntsville.” The other three pieces currently in the works are portraits of her mom, dad, and younger brother.

Along with an assortment of colorful geode-like designs, Johnston preserves flowers in resin. “Flower preservation is very popular right now,” she said.

Johnston sells her collection of preserved flowers at the Huntsville Botanical Garden gift shop; future business opportunities include floral bouquet preservation as part of wedding packages. She explained, “I definitely want to build a brand with my own product.” n

A Resplendent Affair The Alm’s Christmas Eve Tradition

Welcome to the historic home of Beverly Farrington Alm and Danny Alm. A thoughtfully designed, curated mecca of calm, situated perfectly in the middle of the Twickenham Historic District. As you enter the large front doors adorned with simple, chic wreaths, the business and noise from the street begins to fade away, and a spa-like feeling of serenity begins to emerge. As your senses settle, you notice the spirit of Christmas is alive here, subtle, then palpable. It is warm and personal, while lavish and elegant. Beverly, owner of Accents of the South, is a well-established and respected local interior designer. Her credentials are expansive and impressive – but pale in comparison to her intuitive vision actualized. Being in one of her considerate, breathtaking spaces is an experience to be savored. As in a well-directed film, every detail matters. Nothing spontaneously took up residence on the coffee table. Each antiquity or accent was intentionally, artistically placed in this inspired space. Her Christmas decorations naturally follow suit. Simple, live greenery adorns the mantels, dining tables and main rooms, while a shimmering flocked tree commands attention in the living room. There is no excess. Only the timeless collection of Christopher Radko ornaments shimmering from the brightly lit, “snowy” tree, a special delivery from the flocking experts in Nashville. Its rarity is not lost on visitors. It appears to

have been created for just this spot. The centrally located kitchen is something dreams are made of. Adjacent to a cozy sitting area with a fireplace adorned with magnolia and pine, huge windows throw light on the thick and rich marble countertops, reminiscent of French or Italian estates. The air is soft and silky. The sunlight ineffable.

Her aesthetic encapsulates the elegance of restraint and simplicity. It is just enough.

In addition to the main kitchen, the home is equipped with a well-appointed prep kitchen in the back of the home, to keep the mess out of the way of the parties frequently taking place. One of these parties is an extra-special and important annual family tradition – the feast and celebration of Christmas Eve. A special night full of possibilities where they celebrate their faith, their love of God, the gift of Jesus and their love for each other. As Beverly said, the tradition began “as my siblings came back to live in Huntsville to start their families, we would all gather at our parents for Christmas Day. But I wanted to do something special for the children only. So, I found

myself recreating a special Christmas Eve where each of my nieces and nephews would hopefully feel the magic of the night that I did as a child.” Growing up, Beverly and her three siblings loved Christmas Eve, where they were lucky enough to each open an early present. The presents were always sent by her “Aunt and Uncle Up North” who they had never met, but they “knew must be fine people because they sent each of us four children a present every year,” Beverly recalled with a chuckle.

As her nieces and nephews have grown up, are getting married and having children of their own, one thing is steadfast. Christmas Eve is spent at Aunt Beverly’s. It is one evening that they barter with their spouses not to miss. And for good reason. It is a spectacular night, full of the magic of the season. The house is a buzz with activity.

Beverly’s ten nieces and nephews assist her for days in the preparation for the night’s feast. The dinner is a formal four-course affair featuring different meals each time.

The only constant is the marinated shrimp, artichoke and mushroom appetizer, a

favorite which is always on the table. Different main courses have included: sauteed duck breast with fig risotto, pan-sauteed redfish with beurre blanc and crappie meuniere. All of the meat is harvested by her nephews, who also help in the preparation and cooking. The table itself is a sublime work of art. The flowers in the center are fresh and simple, allowing the rest of the traditional table to shine. Fine, stately china sits regally in between the shining sterling flatware, and the beams from the crystal stems dance in the candlelight. Everyone is seated, the feast is served, and the scene is complete with laughter, love and light. After dinner, everyone gathers in the living room for the singing of chorales, a reading of the Christmas Story and a devotional that ushers in the wonder of the holiday. The men, dapper in their suits, and the ladies, graceful in their cocktail dresses, help the children find their one early gift to open. Sleepy and full of Christmas magic, the children wave goodnight as they are carted off in their parents’ arms. It is a story book night indeed. n

Junior League Drive-By Orientation Photos by Steve Babin The Junior League of Huntsville held a drive-by parade to welcome their new members while observing social distancing guidelines on July 26. The organization normally hosts a full day of in-person new member orientation.

With 20 current members hosting, 40 new members drove through the parade, including six women transferring from other leagues. Due to the generosity of the new members, the group collected nearly 100 books for donation to Cavalry Hills Library.

Spotlight Call it what you will. Pivoting. Shifting gears. Adapting. Regardless of the term used, it is a matter of adjusting to change in very unusual circumstances. Since mid-March, nearly every organization has faced its own theme and variation on organizing and regrouping. Arts organizations have been hit especially hard, as their existence relies on people, businesses, and revenue - ticket buyers, donors, and sponsors.

Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theater and Academy Executive Director Karen Mockensturm refers to it as “taking lemons and making artistic lemonade.”

To volley the setbacks, Fantasy Playhouse has strategically made a series of creative adjustments. Instead of presenting in-person camps, classes, or theatre performances, Fantasy has migrated to the virtual platform. Its annual “A Christmas Carol” has been adapted and re-invented. Through shadows, puppetry, live foley sounds, and a cast of five actors playing multiple roles; the theatre effectively captures the classic Dickens tale in a family-friendly virtual format.

Founded in 1961 by Katherine and Richard Lester, Richard Van Valkenburg, Helen Herriott, along with many others, Fantasy Playhouse Theater has introduced over 600,000 people to the magic of theatre over the past 60 years. Last year, before COVID, Fantasy reached 29,000 people. Of those, 16,000 were youth.

Perpetuity of Fantasy Playhouse is crucial to the Huntsville community, especially the West Huntsville area. Fantasy enhances the quality of life to the nearby Hillandale and Terry Heights communities by providing free theatre arts education to local at-risk students and those students attending Title I schools.

Mockensturm got her first taste of the spotlight in the eighth grade, as a new arrival to South Florida. By way of the Plantation Players, a teen theatre group directed by Genie Croft, she soon found her niche. And that was only the beginning. The summer between her junior and senior year, Croft encouraged Mockensturm to apply to the Cherub Program with National High School Institute at Northwestern University. After playing Miranda in “The Tempest” Mockensturm was hooked.

“Since 2014, we have grown 415% in terms of formalized educational impact of what Fantasy does,” said Mockensturm. Growth and recognition go hand in hand. In 2017, the theatre was named 2017 Nonprofit of the Year by the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce.

“In 2018, we launched our in-school touring shows which are using theatre professionals to bring shows directly into the schools to support curriculum. The first show we did was part of the Alabama bicentennial. Fantasy in the Classroom was a big game changer,” Mockensturm said. “Now, we’ve got five full-time employees and a part-time advancement director. We also employ about 40 contractors including musicians, teaching artists, composers, playwrights, actors, directors and designers.”

“The biggest indicator as to whether someone is going to pay for a ticket to live production, attend a concert, go to an art museum or become a subscriber at a concert series is whether or not they were exposed to the arts as a child,” she explained.

“And that supersedes economics and education.”

“We’re going places because our region is exploding and Fantasy is building on the amazing legacy of theatrical artistry to bring forth new programming that brings the magic of theatre arts to all children throughout our region and beyond, “ said Mockensturm. “There are big things happening and Fantasy Playhouse will be standing stronger than ever on the other side of this pandemic. We are grateful to be part of a community that understands that arts and culture are intrinsically tied to quality of life” “The reason we’re growing is because the program is in demand by every family that’s coming from Washington D.C. or St. Louis or Seattle,” said Mockensturm. “They are coming here, knowing that this is the type of programming offered – both the entertainment aspect and the school partnerships.” n

After high school graduation, she initially planned to attend the theatre program at Florida State but soon found herself in Gainesville. “That summer they had the International Thespians Troupe,” said Mockensturm. “The state conference was at the University of Florida.”

She honed her skills in presenting outreach programs through her years of experience as a teaching artist and acting instructor at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia, along with the Roundabout Theatre Company, Creative Acting Company, and Broadway Classroom in New York City.

The Roundabout Theatre Company’s “Page to Stage” program used theatre arts integration to help high school students improve their communication skills to pass their written Regent’s exam. The residencies spanned across the greater New York metropolitan area; programming at private schools on Long Island along with schools in Queens and in Harlem.

After 16 years as an actor, a divorce and a 5-week-old infant brought Mockensturm to Huntsville in 2002 to be near her parents. With a new baby to provide for, her acting career took a decade-long backseat. When the executive director position at Fantasy opened in 2012, she had the opportunity to return to her passion. “I never thought I’d do theatre again.”

Mockensturm spent her first six months on board getting to know board members, volunteers, and the people who grew up with Fantasy Theater. Then, in January 2013, she held a very instrumental board meeting. “Barring any kind of resource limitations,” she asked the board, “where do you want to see Fantasy in 10 years? Every single person in that room wanted to see Fantasy have a brand-new campus where we could have a home, where we would be presenting the shows in the building, and most importantly, where we could teach technical theatre.”

The Huntsville Botanical Garden’s Galaxy of Lights is celebrating 25 years of lighting up holiday nights. The Tinsel Trail in Big Spring International Park East is marking its tenth year of bringing holiday joy into the heart of downtown Huntsville. Make a day of it and go Skating in the Park next to the Huntsville Museum of Art. These outdoor activities are great exercise and they make social distancing easy.

Mission Experiences offer guests the opportunity to see and do special activities in addition to the museum’s outstanding standard admission experience. Photos by Steve Babin Huntsville Botanical Garden extended their hours on select Wednesdays from July through September for attendees to enjoy Golden Hour. Illuminated by the warm glow of the setting sun, Golden Hour invited guests to unwind and enjoy the Garden’s natural beauty in a new light – welcoming them to explore 112 acres with food, drinks, and live music, spreading out safely whether strolling along nature trails or lounging in the grass.

Sweet and savory charcuterie boxes provided by Good Company Café were available for purchase. A beverage bar offered local craft beer, wine, White Claw Hard Seltzer, soda, and water, plus a taste of summertime with the Garden’s signature Sunset Sangria. n

Merea House Dedication Photos by Steve Babin An open house was held on September 16 at Merea House, a ministry of the Huntsville Dream Center. The event began with a dedication blessing.

Merea House is a home for women in need of a bridge to wholeness. A journey two years in the making has come to fruition as the number of women who find themselves in crisis and transitional situations continues to rise. Merea House offers safe housing and mentoring while providing physical support, emotional healing and spiritual wholeness.
