Huntsville Music Office: 2025 Year in Review The Huntsville Music Office closed out a landmark year during its final Quarterly Music Meetup of 2025 on Thursday, Nov. 20, at the new Vesper Sky Lounge inside the Trilogy Hotel. The event brought together artists, venue operators, educators and civic leaders for a streamlined review of the progress driving Huntsville’s fast-growing music economy.

Music Officer Matt Mandrella told attendees that 2025 proved Huntsville’s music strategy is producing measurable gains for both the creative sector and the broader business community.

“2025 was a year defined by collaboration, innovation and the unstoppable momentum of Huntsville’s music community,” Mandrella said. “Every achievement we are celebrating is the result of hundreds of people across this city working together to make Huntsville a premier music destination.”

Here are some of the most significant highlights from the Huntsville Music Office’s 2025.

The year began with Huntsville receiving national attention when Fast Company named the City one of the world’s most innovative companies for its use of music as an economic driver. Mandrella was later invited to join the Fast Company Impact Council, increasing the city’s visibility within national creative industry networks.

Mayor Tommy Battle said the recognition reflects years of strategic investment. “Fast Company recognized what people in Huntsville already know,” Battle said. “Music is a powerful economic driver. When you support artists, studios, venues and educators, you are also supporting growth in tourism, hospitality and technology.”

Huntsville also played a key role in the passage of Senate Bill 177, which Mandrella joined state leaders to celebrate in Montgomery in July.

The legislation expands Alabama’s entertainment rebate program to include music albums for the first

time and sets aside two million dollars annually for music incentives within a statewide cap of twenty two million dollars.

“This legislation sends a strong message that Alabama is serious about supporting the music industry,” Battle said.

Throughout the year, the Music Office strengthened ties with partners across Louisiana, Tennessee, Texas, North Carolina and Oklahoma, along with cities such as Tulsa, Austin, Memphis and Dothan. These relationships are building the foundation for a multi-state initiative that will increase market access for Huntsville artists and businesses.

The city also expanded its footprint at major industry events, including AMERICANAFEST in Nashville and UK Americana Music Week in London.

The Music Office tracked more than 2,220 events on its public Music Calendar in 2025, up from 1,800 the previous year. The office directly supported more than 185 events across festivals, educational programming and community engagement.

Huntsville Music Month in September featured more than 250 promoted events and doubled participation in Women in Music Week.

The City honored local advocate Mario Maitland during the kickoff with a special recognition and custom cigar box guitar.

Music Month provided a boost to Huntsville's creative economy while also enhancing the city’s reputation as a music-friendly hub. The monthlong celebration included weekly free concerts and cultural experiences, ranging from outdoor festivals and anniversary milestones to nationally recognized special events.

In October, Mayor Battle proclaimed Oct. 29 as Kelvin Wooten Day, celebrating the Grammy-winning producer’s artistic achievements and mentorship. Wooten also narrated Huntsville: Where Music Takes Off, a cinematic spotlight released in partnership with Fast Company.

Festival and series growth continued across the region with expansions of 805 After Five, LAUNCHPAD, Panoply, Tangled String Music and

Arts Festival, Jazz in the Park and the Summer Sunset concerts. Performance opportunities increased through Valley Sounds Live, Live Night with East Iris Studios and multiple songwriter showcases.

As part of its workforce development efforts, the Music Office hosted an industry career and community expo at the Von Braun Center in September to connect residents with job openings and volunteer roles across the local music sector.

“Musicians and music entrepreneurs are moving here, and more importantly, they are staying here,” Mandrella said. “They feel supported, connected and part of something bigger.”

Mandrella closed the evening by noting that Huntsville’s national profile continues to rise.

“This year made one thing clear.

The nation is paying attention to Huntsville’s music movement,” he said. “We have made tremendous strides toward becoming an international music destination, and the energy we have felt all year is not going away.” w

Defense Technology Company Camigan Opens Huntsville Office at Redstone Gateway Camigan, an innovative defense technology company, has officially opened its newest office at Redstone Gateway in Huntsville.

Camigan CEO and founder Dr. Gary Butler shared the company’s vision for the future and its commitment to supporting national defense efforts in Huntsville.

“We focus on the field of kill chain automation software that helps our air defense operators improve mission effectiveness, especially in contested environments against hypersonics, drone swarms, and advanced missile systems,” Butler said.

Camigan’s kill chain automation software enables the U.S. military to leverage advanced AI and machine learning to make faster, critical decisions that drive mission success.

He said the new Huntsville office will be central to advancing these initiatives.

“This office represents our epicenter, if you will, for supporting those very important missions in air missile defense,” Butler said.

Butler noted that this Huntsville location is the start of the company’s regional growth.

“We see this as just a start. We want to continue to grow in this space. We want to build a world-class team of AI and machine learning engineers, software engineers who are supporting that very important mission,” he said.

Butler also spoke to the strategic importance of Redstone Arsenal and the company’s commitment to its partners in the region.

“Redstone Arsenal is home to some of the most critical defense programs in our nation’s arsenal, and we are committed to being a dedicated partner to the warfighters, program offices, and defense organizations in Huntsville working to protect our country,” he said.

Camigan is known for Reactor, an AI-enabled C2-agnostic kill chain automation platform.

According to the company’s

website, this solution is “…designed to predict threat behavior, optimize weapon-target pairings, and assess battle outcomes in contested environments for operators and commanders.”

At a ribbon-cutting ceremony on December 1st, Camigan celebrated the defense contractor’s new location in the Rocket City.

Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle and Dylan Smith, the district director for Alabama Congressman Dale Strong, spoke at the event, sharing their enthusiasm for Camigan joining the business community at Redstone Arsenal.

“Thank you for your investment in Huntsville and thank you for being part of our community,” Battle said.

Battle continued, “We've always wanted to set up centers of excellence out here at Redstone Gateway and at Research Park that fit into the Arsenal. This is another example of us putting in another spoke in the wheel of these centers of excellence so that we can work in the AI field.”

Smith emphasized Huntsville's importance as a hub for federal defense work.

“We truly believe that there is no better place to support the warfighter and do business with the federal government than here in Huntsville, Alabama. That is in large part due to Mayor Battle and his administration,” Smith said.

Camigan is headquartered in Starkville, Mississippi, and has locations in Lawton, Oklahoma, and Nashville, Tennessee.

The company also established the Camigan Center for AI and Machine Learning in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, in 2019. At this office, the company focuses on research, workforce development, and collaboration with university partners to advance AI and machine learning capabilities.

Between both of the company’s Alabama locations, Camigan has 40 employees in the state.

Camigan also works with several companies located in Huntsville, such as Northrop Grumman, Torch Technologies, the U.S. Army, and others. w

Huntsville Engineer Builds Growing Online Hub for Students and Professionals Huntsville civil engineer Maxwell R. Carter has spent a little over one year building and overseeing something he wished he had available to him when he was in school.

The 30-year-old Huntsville High School and University of Tennessee– Knoxville graduate is the creator of The Engineering Resource, a free online platform designed to help students, early-career engineers and seasoned professionals navigate the often scattered landscape of engineering information.

Carter launched the site after purchasing the engineeringresource. org domain for about twenty dollars.

He built it himself on a free website platform and has kept the project intentionally low-cost and completely free to users. “It is not commercialized. There are no advertisements and no marketing,” Carter explained.

Despite that shoestring approach, the site has grown steadily. It has been linked by nine universities in total, mostly through their career centers, and by two engineering associations.

Two Ivy League institutions, Harvard University and Dartmouth College, have also linked to the site, an early milestone that surprised Carter. Those links, along with consistent updates, have helped the site build strong SEO performance. Google Search Console shows the site recently crossed one thousand clicks and more than one

hundred thousand impressions.

Users appear to come from a wide range of backgrounds. “I see a mix of professionals and students,” Carter said. “The training pages and webinars get a lot of attention because people are looking for continuing education or professional development.

Scholarships are a big one too.”

The site organizes information across dozens of categories, gathering links to engineering associations, scholarships, accredited degree programs, job boards, continuing education resources, design manuals and technical documents.

Carter describes himself as more of an aggregator than a content creator. His blog focuses on career guidance for students and young professionals, with plans to expand into topics he uses in practice, including how AI has become useful in civil engineering and the limitations he has experienced with it. One of his posts discusses the difference between academic engineering and real-world practice, a page he recommends as a helpful reference for students.

There are some internship links within the Jobs section. Co-ops, he noted, are managed directly by universities and employers. The page also highlights organizations that offer free or discounted student memberships.

“They can join those groups and get the perks of membership, which is really valuable when you are starting out,” he said.

Carter’s interest in engineering has deep family roots. His grandfather moved the family to Huntsville around 1960 after working as a surveyor during World War II and later for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Air Force. He eventually became an estimator for NASA, work-

ing on infrastructure projects across Redstone Arsenal. Carter said his grandfather received a service award presented to him directly by Wernher von Braun, an image captured in the background photo on The Engineering Resource website. “He was not a rocket engineer, but he did surveying, construction and facilities work that supported a lot of activity on Redstone,” Carter said.

Carter sees The Engineering Resource as a long-term project. He plans to add more technical topic pages, particularly in areas where he has spent time learning on his own. His concrete pavement page, for example, compiles key manuals, specifications and ASTM standards that professionals rely on. “I think there is a strong base now,” he said. “There is still a lot more I want to add.” w

During his speech, he celebrated the city's significant economic, population, and job growth, attributing it to strong federal partnerships with entities like Redstone Arsenal, the FBI, and the incoming U.S. Space Command. Battle also commended Huntsville's leadership for managing the city well and within budget.

He also spoke about extensive infrastructure projects, including major road and overpass construction along areas like I-565 and Winchester Road, to manage this growth.

Battle also emphasized Huntsville's focus on quality of life, highlighting investments in parks, greenways, arts, and sports tourism.

Federal Partnerships as an Economic Engine: Battle identified federal agencies, particularly Redstone Arsenal, NASA, and the FBI, as the primary drivers of Huntsville's economy, contributing a $36 billion annual economic impact and tens of thousands of jobs.

He also highlighted Space Command's upcoming move to Huntsville.

"Our team has been working hand in hand with state and federal partners to ensure a good transition, and we stand ready for 1,400 new jobs that we're going to add to our workforce over the next five years," Battle said.

Battle noted that Space Command's future presence in North Alabama matters not only to local residents but also to the United States and other nations.

"This can't just be a success for Huntsville, it has to be a success for our nation and for all the world," he shared.

Battle also commended federal workers and contractors for their contributions to the city and their resilience in the face of challenges, such as the recent government shutdown.

"These people work every day to keep our country safe, advance scientific research, push innovation, and defend freedom. To them, we say thank you," he said.

2. Rapid and Managed Growth: Huntsville experienced significant expansion over the past five years, becoming one of the top 20 fastest-growing cities in America with a 23% population increase.

This surge has been managed through ongoing investments in land and infrastructure.

"To accommodate this new growth, we made some strategic decisions and annexations, bringing in more than 2,287 new acres across the city. These additions will provide new growth corridors for the future with sites for industry, housing, and schools," Battle said.

He emphasized that Huntsville's

success isn't just by accident, but it is intentional.

"It comes from strategic planning, investment from a commitment to making this a city people want to be a part of," Battle said.

3. Emphasis on Quality Growth: A central theme of the mayor's address was that Huntsville's accomplishments aren't being measured just by the accelerated population increase, but by "how well it grows."

Investments in city-wide public safety, parks, greenways, roadways, and cultural amenities continue to bolster the area's progress.

"Our focus is on maintaining affordability, improving traffic flow, and ensuring that every neighborhood remains safe," Battle said.

Battle also shared that the city is seeking to continue bettering transportation by adding a

new interchange.

"Looking ahead, we're actively and aggressively working with both our state and federal partners to secure a new interchange of I-565," he said.

4. Future-Focused Innovation: Mayor Battle positioned Huntsville as a hub for future technologies beyond aerospace, including quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and life sciences. He revealed that a partnership with Davidson Technologies has launched Alabama's first quantum computer.

In his own words, he described Huntsville as, "A city that dares to dream big and build even bigger, a city where a spark can become a flame, a flame can become a launch. Where one generation passes its dreams to the next in the Rocket City."

5. Long-Term Strategic Planning: Battle concluded his speech with a forward-looking vision, stressing that current strategic planning was aimed at securing Huntsville's prosperity for decades to come, positioning the city as a leader in technology, innovation, and livability.

He also stressed that the city's current success was the result of decisions made decades ago, and that current planning for projects like an expanded airport, a North Huntsville Beltline, and improved university campuses is focused on the city's needs 25 to 30 years from now.

"When we look at the future, we recognize that Huntsville and North Alabama must have a competitive edge. That means building a quality of life that is second to none," Battle said.

Overall, Mayor Battle's current and future outlook for Huntsville is optimistic, even highlighting the inspirational nature of the city's investments, which have improved the community.

Battle continued, "These investments don't just build places, they build experiences, they bring communities together, they strengthen." w

Building on a Legacy: Butcher Drafting Service at 60 Years Sixty years ago, Butcher Drafting Service began out of a house on Jack Coleman Drive in northwest Huntsville, where Joe and Betty Butcher raised their three children.

Tom Austin purchased the business in 1998. At that time, it was a twoperson operation. Joe had one small tabletop copier, hand-drew all of his plans, and used a blueprint machine to copy them.

Since then, Tom has transitioned all drafting to computer-aided design while maintaining the standards Joe established. He reorganized the business as an LLC and runs it as the professional office it is today.

“I treat everyone the way I want to be treated,” Tom says. “Some people are just glad we answer the phone. Many clients come to us having never had a house plan drawn, and it can be a confusing and intimidating process.”

Tom and his team guide clients through each step, often helping them navigate what is the largest investment of their lives.

As business increased, Tom expanded the company from two employees to a team of ten. They now have two locations: Huntsville, AL, and Pulaski, TN. Tom took drafting for two years in high school, later earning an associate degree in drafting. Before purchasing Butcher Drafting Service, he worked for a commercial contractor, a drafting company, an architect, and a washing machine manufacturer.

Tom consistently pursues learning and trains others as well. He has taught his sister, daughter, and sonin-law how to draft. Most recently, his daughter Emily trained one of their best architectural designers.

Tom is certified by the Veteran’s Administration to sign off on plans, and in 2012 he earned his drafting certification through the American Drafting and Design Association.

other residential structures.

“We pretty much do anything architectural,” Tom says. Beyond residential work, the team has also created shop drawings for cabinets, steel balconies, industrial platforms, patent-support documentation, and even utility trailers.

The team helps homeowners bring their ideas to life through custom house plans and assists both homeowners and builders in resolving issues with local inspection departments. They also support architects and realtors by produc-

Business Alabama Honors Bank Independent as One of the State’s Top Employers Bank Independent was recently named one of the Best Companies to Work for in Alabama for the sixth consecutive year. This annual program, now in its fourteenth year, was created by Business Alabama magazine and Best Companies Group to recognize employers that demonstrate excellence in workplace culture, employee satisfaction, and overall employee experience.

“This recognition reflects the heart of who we are as an organization,” said Macke Mauldin, CEO of Bank Independent.

This survey and awards program was designed to identify, recognize, and honor the best employers in Alabama, benefiting the economy, workforce, and businesses. The list is made up of 40 companies.

To be considered for participation, companies had to fulfill the following eligibility requirements: - Be a for-profit or not-forprofit business or government entity; - Be a publicly or privately held business; - Have a facility in Alabama; - Have at least 15 employees in Alabama; - Be in business a minimum of 1 year.

Companies from across the state entered the two-part survey process to determine the Best Companies to Work for in Alabama. The first part consisted

of evaluating each nominated company's workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems, and demographics. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final rankings. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process in Alabama, analyzed the data, and determined the final rankings.

The rankings will be revealed in the publication of the December 2025 issue of Business Alabama. An awards luncheon was held on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at The McWane Science Center in Birmingham. w

Ten Years of Answers: Smith Family Clinic Transforms Care for Patients With Rare and Undiagnosed Diseases In November of 2015, the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology launched The Smith Family Clinic for Genomic Medicine.

Since that time, thousands of patients have visited the clinic to receive diagnosis and treatment for undiagnosed diseases. Led by director Meagan Cochran, MS, CGC, the clinic focuses on using DNA to identify the causes of illness in children and adults with undiagnosed diseases.

The clinic provides genetic counseling to patients with a disease diagnosis or family history of disease, diagnoses patients with undiagnosed or misdiagnosed genetic diseases, and provides proactive health screenings for those interested in pharmacogenetic testing, carrier testing, or elective

disease risk testing.

Patients are seen by a clinical geneticist and/or genetic counselor who evaluate symptoms to determine if genetic testing is appropriate and, if so, the type of genetic test needed. Test results are then interpreted to identify changes in the DNA that may be linked to disease, drug interactions, family history of disease or other implications.

“We couldn't be happier that the Smith Family Clinic calls HudsonAlpha's campus 'home',” said HudsonAlpha President Neil Lamb, PhD. “In addition to meeting the needs of individuals with rare, undiagnosed disorders, the clinic is the recruitment site for several HudsonAlpha research initiatives including our Parkinson’s biomarker study and the HOPE-AD dementia trial. The clinic is named in honor of the Smith family of Huntsville. Mark C. Smith, who died in 2007, was cofounder of Adtran, and an active philanthropist in the city. He was diagnosed with head and neck cancer in 2000 and this challenging time in his life contributed to his interest in biotechnology. Smith became actively involved with HudsonAlpha and was one of the Institute’s founding board members. Today, his wife, Linda, is an active member of HudsonAlpha’s Board of Directors and the HudsonAlpha Foundation Board.

“When we opened the doors of the Smith Family Clinic 10 years ago, our family’s vision was to provide answers and hope for families facing the unknown,” Linda Smith said. “Seeing how many lives have been touched through the power of genomic medicine has been more rewarding than we could have ever imagined.” w

Drake State Enrollment Surges 19%, Reaching Highest Levels in 10 Years Drake State Community and Technical College reported its highest enrollment growth in more than a decade for Fall 2025, enrolling 1,417 students—a 19% increase from last year’s 1,187.

Credit hour production also rose 23% to 10,760 hours.

“This remarkable growth is a testament to the dedication of our faculty and staff, our community partnerships, and our students’ belief in the value of a Drake State education,” said Dr. Patricia Sims, President of Drake State Community and Technical College.

“We are thrilled to have so many new and returning students who are taking the next step toward achieving their goals.”

College leaders attribute the increase to expanded academic programs, broader outreach to local high schools and industry partners, and strengthened student support services.

“The Drake State on the Road Initiative has been instrumental in driving our strong fall enrollment growth this year. UAH Announces SportsMED Arena Under New 10-Year Partnership The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) Chargers will play basketball and volley-

ball in the SportsMED Arena for the next 10 years under a new partnership with SportsMED Orthopaedic Specialists, P.C. As part of the agreement, the orthopedic and spine care center has contributed $325,000 toward a total $1.3 million pledge to secure naming rights for the gymnasium in Spragins Hall.

The University of Alabama (UA) System Board of Trustees approved the pledge and the naming at their Nov. 7 meeting.

“At SportsMED, we believe that world-class care begins with world-class education,” said SportsMED Director of Business Development Kelsey Siniard.

“UAH continues to push the boundaries of research, athletics and academic excellence, and we’re proud to support an organization that’s driving growth and opportunity in North Alabama.

This partnership is an investment not just in UAH, but in the fu-

ture of our community’s health and success.”

Dr. Eric Janssen is a boardcertified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in innovative sports medicine and the treatment of shoulder and knee injuries at SportsMED. UAH teams BlueStreak, Cosmos and Rotorstorm also earned sixth, eighth and fourteenth place, respectively, in the international rankings for the annual event, which showcases student-built CanSats—miniature satellites designed to simulate an actual space mission.

The projects challenge students to fit all major satellite subsystems, such as power, sensors and communication, into a relatively small volume. Originally, CanSats were literally the size of a soda can, but current payloads are roughly two-and-a-half times larger than the first CanSats launched in 2008. Once fully loaded, each CanSat is then launched by a rocket or deployed from a balloon to carry out a mission, which typically includes collecting data on temperature and pressure, before landing safely.

Hosted by the American Astronautical Society, the competition features university teams from around the world participating in an eight-month cycle of multiple deliverables, presentations and testing milestones. The competition concludes with each school squaring off over four days, with each squad participating in preflight briefings, completing Flight Readiness Reviews, launching their hardware at the competition site and delivering Post Flight Review presentations.

This year’s primary objective was to descend using a passive autogyro system, an experimental atmospheric descent mechanism

that uses unpowered, freely rotating blades to generate lift and slow the descent of a small payload through Earth's atmosphere. The system is passive because it relies solely on the natural aerodynamic forces of the free-falling motion to make the rotor spin and produce lift, requiring no power source, attitude sensors or active control mechanisms after deployment.

“Notably, 93% of UAH’s 29 competing team members were first-year students, entering the season with only the two-month Space Hardware Club (SHC) training program as their foundation,” explains Alexander Burak, AutoSat Program Manager for the SHC. “Competing against primarily upperclassmen and graduate students from around the world, their performance was nothing short of exceptional.”

In addition, UAH team ASTRA placed 10th internationally out of 38 university teams that reached the competition level from a pool of 116 initial entrants in the annual University Rover Challenge (URC).

The robotics competition for university students is held at the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) near Hanksville, Utah. Student teams design and build rovers to perform tasks that would be necessary for astronauts exploring Mars, such as science collection, equipment servicing and autonomous navigation, as seen in this video. The event takes place in a challenging, desert environment that resembles the Martian landscape.

“ASTRA conducted on-site practice sessions in preparation for the event, and the team successfully ran the rover through the science, equipment servicing, extreme retrieval and autonomy missions,” Burak says. “While each mission went smoothly, the team identified several areas for improvement to focus on throughout the upcoming year.

With more hands-on training, frequent testing and a few strategic upgrades, they aim to elevate their performance even further.”

Drake State and Huntsville Hospital Launch RN Program to Strengthen Nursing Workforce Following the success of the landmark LPN Launch Program collaboration between Drake State Community and Technical College and Huntsville Hospital, both

institutions proudly announced the new RN Launch Program with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. The signing event took place Monday, December 1, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Nursing Classroom on Drake State’s Cochran Road Campus.

The LPN Launch Program has demonstrated strong outcomes, with Drake State receiving the Mark Ivester Innovation Award from the Community Colleges of Appalachia and many institutions across Alabama and beyond adopting the model for their own programs. The program has also delivered impressive student results: the last two classes of the PN Nursing program (December 2024 and May 2025) achieved a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX, while Drake State’s RN program has maintained an 86%

NCLEX pass rate. The new RN Launch Program serves as a natural progression, allowing students currently enrolled in the LPN program to continue their studies toward earning an RN license.

The RN Launch Program gives students access to a stronger, more affordable, and more supportive academic pathway. Through the initiative, students will benefit from a streamlined transition from LPN to RN training, increased exposure to hospital-based clinical experience, and closer mentorship from nursing professionals. The strengthened alignment between academic coursework and handson training reduces barriers to degree completion and enhances students’ preparation as they move directly into advanced nursing roles.

Bank Independent Honors Athens State Recipients of Mauldin Scholarship Bank Independent recognized two Athens State University students as recipients of the 2025 Edward Fennel Mauldin Endowed Scholarship during a reception hosted by the bank and university representatives.

The scholarship, designed for first-generation college attendees, is named in honor of the late Bank Independent President, Edward Fennel Mauldin. John Jones, a senior majoring in Management, and Chandler Rice, a first-time recipient also majoring in Management, were both in attendance to accept the scholarship.
