Drake State Students Can Really Dig Huntsville Utilities Program A workforce development program at Drake State Community and Technical College is designed to help students build a pipeline to a new career.

"Dig the Line," a hands-on class where students operate heavy equipment on a work site, is sponsored by Huntsville Utilities.

“There are 10 students and the class filled up right away,” said Joseph Bevel, Drake State director of workforce development.

“It’s maxed at 10 students to give them plenty of hands-on experience.

“Huntsville Utilities would be interested in the students when they complete the program. Private contractors, also.”

The class takes three weeks, Bevel said. Week 1 is OSHA safety and certification and getting acquainted with the equipment.

Week 2 is “all about excavation.

The class simulates an actual work site,” he said.

At the site, which is behind the campus, students perform all the duties in digging a trench laying a pipe: operate an excavator, backhoe, “jumping jack” tamper, and skid steer, and serve as traffic enforcement holding “Stop” and “Slow” signs.

Then, the next day, they return to the site to remove the pipe, simulating the work if the pipe were damaged.

And it’s in all sorts of weather.

This week, the students dealt with the mud and standing water from the recent rains, as well as the humid afternoons.

“Huntsville Utilities doesn’t take weather delays,” Bevel said.

“We try to make it as realistic as possible.”

The third week, the students are inside and practice in a tall cylinder simulating a manhole. They also undergo certificate testing which provides the step they need to start a career in utilities.

“This compares to the line workers program,” said Doug

Brazier, Drake State dean of workforce development. “There’s no guarantee of a job but this gives them a step up when they go job searching.”

Workforce development programs like the Underground Utilities Course give young people direct access to industry-recognized credentials and hands-on training that connect them to living-wage careers.

“This is a wonderful collaboration,” said Dr. Harry Hobbs, Huntsville Utilities vice president of employee engagement. “This will help young folks get basic skills to perform underground work and make them more marketable.”

Hobbs said the program helps Huntsville meet a growing shortage of skilled utilities workers. Also, the profession, like many others, is aging out.

“We’ve got to get that new generation and make it local and cost-effective,” he said. “We want to give the students a basic understanding of utilities.”

Hobbs said Huntsville Utilities and Drake State officials met for several months to hammer out a curriculum. And, through its Innovation Dividend Fund, Huntsville Utilities provides a limited number

of scholarships for the program.

Hobbs said. The collaboration ensures that students receive industry-relevant insights and hands-on training, setting them up for success in the field.

This is the second workforce development program between Drake State and Huntsville Utilities.

In 2023, they established a Gas and Water Operation Certification Scholarship Program.

The four-week program provides alternative pathways to entering the workforce and enrich the pool of potential candidates for gas and water operation careers at Huntsville Utilities and other prospective local employers. w

In this edition of Sit Down with Success, Limbaugh reflects on the lessons she has learned, the importance of investing in others, and why success today is defined less by professional achievements and more by making a positive impact.

Tell us a little about what inspired you to pursue a career in orthodontics.

I loved the idea of building longterm relationships with patients and families, watching their confidence grow, and being part of a transformation that can truly impact how they see themselves.

What motivated you to start your

own practice, and what were some of the biggest challenges you faced as a business owner?

Starting my own practice allowed me to build the kind of environment I believed patients and team members deserved, one that felt professional, welcoming, and fun.

The biggest challenge was learning that being a great orthodontist and being a business owner require very different skill sets. You have to learn leadership, finance, marketing, team development, decision-making, and problem-solving in real time. It is challenging, but it has also been one of the most rewarding parts of my career.

What is a professional risk you took that ultimately helped shape your success?

Growing my own practice was certainly a professional risk. It required faith, hard work, and the willingness to make decisions without always knowing the outcome. Over time, I also learned to trust my vision for the practice, even when it meant doing things differently.

Building a successful team is critical in any business. What qualities do you look for when hiring, and how do you create a positive culture within your practice?

Skill matters, but attitude matters just as much. I look for people who are kind, dependable, coachable, energetic, and genuinely enjoy serving others. Orthodontics is very team-oriented, and every person in the office affects the patient experience.

You are known for your patientcentered approach. How do you ensure patients feel comfortable and cared for throughout their treatment journey?

We try to make every patient feel seen, heard, and valued from the moment they walk in the door.

What is one piece of advice you would give to aspiring entrepreneurs?

Know your “why” and be willing to work hard for it. Entrepreneurship is rewarding, but it is not easy. There will be challenges, mistakes, long days, and moments of uncertainty. If your purpose is clear, it helps guide your decisions and

keeps you going when things are difficult.

I would also tell aspiring entrepreneurs to surround themselves with good people, ask questions, stay humble, and never underestimate the power of excellent service. People remember how you make them feel.

Tailored to Huntsville: Ferren Boutique Takes a Northern Feel to the Southern Boutique Experience Madison McFerren, a 25-year-old Maryland native, has already turned a lifelong dream into a growing business, bringing a new fashion concept to Huntsville’s very own Stadium Commons off the parkway.

As founder and owner of Ferren Boutique, McFerren has combined her background in fashion merchandising with an entrepreneurial mindset to create what she describes as an "elevated everyday wear" boutique. It is one designed to offer timeless wardrobe staples and a customer experience that extends far beyond the clothing racks.

She earned a marketing degree with a minor in fashion merchandising from High Point University before moving to New York City to pursue a master's degree in fashion merchandising at LIM College. While attending graduate school full time, she also worked in retail management, helping open an Abercrombie store in Manhattan's Flatiron District before becoming a stylist at Aritzia's Fifth Avenue location.

The experience exposed her to one of the world's fashion capitals while helping her better understand merchandising, trend forecasting and retail operations.

“I thought maybe for a while, I would work my way up the corporate ladder in New York and do corporate fashion, maybe be a buyer for a department store,” she said.

Although she initially had no plans to move south, Huntsville eventually became the next step in her career when she relocated to be with her twin sister. After accepting a management position at Hemline in Huntsville, she gained hands-on experience overseeing boutique operations before working at Anna Banana, a children’s boutique.

She realized that the special thing about the South is the personal aspect.

McFerren developed a detailed business plan and shared it with local commercial real estate broker Wesley Crunkleton. The proposal quickly opened doors.

Her father, Michael McFerren, said Crunkleton was impressed not only by the concept but also by the professionalism behind it.

After securing space at Stadium

Commons, McFerren managed every aspect of launching the business herself, from working with architects and contractors to navigating permitting, establishing the LLC and selecting inventory. She officially opened Ferren in April of 2026.

While her father financed the project, he emphasized that the business has always been his daughter's vision.

McFerren said her father's support represented much more than financial backing.

“If he didn't think it was worth investing in, he would've pointed me to a bank,” she said.

His belief in her was the encouragement she needed to bring her dream to life.

While her father serves as a trusted business advisor, her mother accompanies her to apparel markets in Atlanta and New York, helping evaluate merchandise that appeals to a broad customer base.

“I do a lot of the buying with my

mom, because if she and I both agree on a piece, then that's telling me it's going to hit the higher end of my target age range, but also it's going to hit the lower end,” McFerren said. “So if we're looking at a piece, and we both think it’s really cute, it's probably going to be a winner in the store.”

recognized an opportunity to offer versatile, high-quality clothing that could transition from work to dinner while appealing to women across multiple generations.

Her special eye brings a northern, professional feel to a boutique, with many structured and monochromatic pieces, while typical southern styles are colorful and ruffly. The boutique also carries bags, accessories, and even Mason Pearson handmade hair brushes.

“There are a lot of boutiques here, but there aren't a lot of places where you can buy basic capsule items that will last,” she said.

Today, Ferren's customer base ranges from recent college graduates building a professional wardrobe to women in their 40s, 50s and beyond looking for modern, polished clothing without sacrificing comfort.

When selecting merchandise, McFerren evaluates each piece with versatility in mind. That intentional approach extends throughout the boutique.

Inspired by the customer experience she encountered in New York and other specialty retailers, McFerren carefully curated every detail of the store, including a signature scent created with a local candle maker.

The boutique also highlights local artists, such as pottery created by McFerren's identical twin sister, Macy, reinforcing Ferren's connection to the Huntsville community.

Beyond creating a distinctive retail environment, McFerren said she wants customers to experience the personalized service that independent boutiques can offer. She hopes Ferren provides that same feeling for customers by building genuine relationships rather than simply completing transactions.

Although Ferren is still establishing itself, McFerren remains focused on long-term growth while continuing to refine the customer experience she envisioned years ago. w

Alabama A&M, Huntsville Hospital Open First Primary Care Clinic in North Huntsville It’s just what the doctor ordered.

Or, rather, it’s what North Huntsville needed.

In a major effort to address a dearth of health care access in North Huntsville, Alabama A&M and Huntsville Hospital have opened the first primary care clinic in that underserved but growing part of Huntsville.

Officials from Alabama A&M and Huntsville Hospital joined elected representatives and community stakeholders this week to cut the ribbon for the Physician Care North Huntsville. The clinic, just north of campus at 4701 Meridian Street, will provide primary care services to patients ages 18 and older.

The new facility represents more than a ribbon-cutting, officials said.

It marks a significant investment in the health and well-being of a community that has waited years for expanded health care options.

“I would like to thank new (A&M) trustee and (Huntsville Hospital) Executive Vice president Tracy Doughty,” said A&M President Daniel K. Wims. “This idea did not occur in a vacuum.

It came out of years of conversation between him and I, and I am personally indebted to him for the work he did to make this vision possible.”

Wims said discussions initially centered on finding ways to address longstanding challenges facing the community.

“I sold (Doughty) on the idea that we have somewhat of a food desert and a health care desert, and we needed to do something about it,” said Wims. “This facility is a monumental step forward for North Huntsville and the families who call this community home.”

The 3,200-square-foot facility in AAMU Plaza includes five exam rooms and one procedure room

and will offer annual physicals, preventive screenings, immunizations, chronic disease management, employment and sports physicals, and sick visits.

Wims said the new clinic is part of a broader effort by the university to support community wellness and economic development. He also announced plans for a dental clinic in the Knight Center on campus and other health and wellness initiatives serving A&M and the community.

Dwayne Mathis, executive director of Huntsville Hospital Physicians Network, said expanding access to preventive care has been a longstanding priority for the hospital system.

“Historically, North Huntsville has had fewer health care options than many other parts of our community,” said Mathis. “Today is a major step toward changing that.

“Our mission is to bring primary care and preventive services closer to neighbors across our community, and that is exactly what Physician Care North Huntsville will do.”

Doughty said the clinic was created to remove barriers to health care for residents across North Hunts-

ville and surrounding communities.

“This clinic is about access,” he said. “It's about making it easier

for people in North Huntsville to get the care they need close to home. While this clinic is adjacent to Alabama A&M University, it was created to serve every neighbor in North Huntsville and beyond.

UAH Neighborhood Nursing Initiative Sees Success in North Alabama, Expands to Jackson County As healthcare and education continue to rank among Huntsville’s most important community priorities, local leaders are finding new ways to merge the two to improve health outcomes across North Alabama.

The UAH College of Nursing launched its Neighborhood Nursing initiative in fall 2025 to address community health needs. By receiving neighborhood-based care to under-resourced and rural communities through screenings, education, referrals, and ongoing engagement, community members are able to manage their health more effectively.

At a press conference on June 18, UAH Nursing faculty and staff provided updates on the program's progress and shared plans for future expansion. In nine weeks of active programming, the initiative served over 500 residents in five local communities.

Dr. Azita Amiri, executive director for Neighborhood Nursing, associate dean for research, and UAH College of Nursing professor, said program leaders are encouraged by the progress made to date.

“We are incredibly proud of what we have accomplished in such a short time,” Amiri said.

She noted that the initiative is designed to serve both current residents and future healthcare professionals.

“UAH Neighborhood Nursing is bringing care where it matters most, training future leaders and expanding a healthier future across underserved communities in Madison County and rural North Alabama,” Amiri said.

Leaders also announced that the Neighborhood Nursing initiative will expand to Jackson County. Program directors are also considering adding Morgan and DeKalb counties to the areas they serve.

“We have students from all over North Alabama in rural areas that are eager to give back to their own communities as well as add to the community of Huntsville as a part of UAH,” Guerra said.

Guerra continued, “Neighborhood nursing is more than a clinical learning experience for our students.

It's an opportunity for these students to make a meaningful impact in the community while developing skills, compassion, and leadership needed to be the healthcare professionals of tomorrow.”

Amiri said positive feedback

from program participants has reinforced the importance of delivering community care to local residents.

“The stories we're hearing from neighbors affirm what we've believed from the beginning — that meaningful healthcare starts with meeting people where they are,” said Amiri.

UAH Neighborhood Nursing combines education, research, outreach, and clinical engagement to bring neighborhood-based care directly into communities while preparing the next generation of nurses through hands-on experience.

challenges,” Amiri said.

The Huntsville Hospital Health System, Crestwood Medical Center, WellStone, and HAPPI Health are just a few of the organizations that are teaming up with the college to expand access to healthcare services across the region.

Michelda Johnson, CEO of HAPPI Health, one of the program’s community partners, said the initiative is powerful, valuable, and is helping remove barriers to care in the community.

“This program is not waiting for people to find their way into healthcare. It is bringing healthcare directly into their community, into their homes and into their neighborhoods,” Johnson said.

Amiri highlighted several ways community members can get involved, including volunteer opportunities, financial support, and donations via the initiative’s Amazon wish list. Contributions directly support services provided in underserved communities.

“Every act of service and every dollar given brings care closer to a neighbor in need—together, we can expand hope and health across North Alabama. Together, we can bring care beyond walls and into the heart of every community,” Amiri said.

During the event, program leaders also announced details for the College of Nursing’s annual symposium, SHINE 2026. The seminar is scheduled to take place at UAH on Nov. 12 from 8 to 11 a.m.

This year’s event theme, “The Power of Us: Healthy Neighborhoods Start Here,” mirrors the mission of UAH Neighborhood Nursing, which seeks to improve health outcomes by bringing care directly to residents and strengthening local partnerships.

Huntsville City Schools Board of Education Elections: 2026 Voter Guide The Huntsville City Schools Board of Education oversees one of Alabama's largest school systems, making decisions that affect thousands of students, families, and educators.

Ahead of the 2026 Huntsville municipal election, which will take place on Aug. 25, 2026, the Huntsville Business Journal invited every Board of Education candidate to answer the same question: “What do you see as the single most important issue facing Huntsville City Schools, and if elected, how would you work to address it?”

The responses below are presented in the candidates' own words, with only minor edits for AP style, grammar, and length where appropriate.

Board of Education District 2 • Holly McCarty “In my opinion, the most pressing concern facing Huntsville City Schools is ensuring that every investment has real classroom results that benefit all students. The Capital Plan addresses facility needs across the district, but we also must focus on what happens in those school buildings, including the programs and instruction students receive. Every student deserves access to high-quality instruction that will engage and motivate them.

The best way to achieve this goal is by investing in our educators and offering innovative programming that inspires every child. I believe that every student should have a teacher, a class, or a program that inspires them, enriches them, and enables them to envision a prosperous future. Programs such as the Artemis Virtual Academy and the Career Technology Center already give students meaningful pathways to explore their future.

I’m proud of the progress of Huntsville City Schools and I look forward to continuing to keep student success at the center of every decision made. I will continue to support investments that improve student outcomes and support teachers.”

native, attorney, and former prosecutor who has represented District 2 on the Huntsville City Board of Education since 2022. She currently serves as the board's Third Presiding Officer.

Huntsville continues to welcome new families, but too many are choosing educational options outside our public schools. I believe our goal shouldn't simply be to manage enrollment; it should be to earn it.

If elected, I'll focus on transparent long-term planning that prepares for future growth, invests in outstanding teachers, and creates more opportunities for students through strong academics, athletics, career pathways, and innovative programs. Every decision should answer one question: Will this make Huntsville City Schools the school system families choose?

If we provide an exceptional and accessible educational experience in every school that families can depend on, enrollment will grow, our schools will become stronger, and our entire city will benefit.”

Every new neighborhood and business brings more students, increasing the demand for classrooms, teachers, transportation, and resources. If we don’t plan carefully, growth can lead to overcrowding, frequent rezoning, and added strain on educators, all of which can impact student learning.

That’s why I believe the most important issue facing Huntsville City Schools is managing growth while improving academic outcomes. Every board decision, whether it‘s budgeting, facilities, staffing or attendance zones, should be guided by one question: Will this improve student learning?

Our focus must remain on increasing reading and math proficiency because those skills are the foundation for lifelong success.

With thoughtful planning, responsible financial stewardship, and support for our teachers, Huntsville’s growth can strengthen our schools instead of stretching them thin. Our goal should be to ensure every student, in every neighborhood, has access to a high-quality education.”

Families, teachers, staff, and taxpayers all need to know that decisions are being made with accurate information, honest communication, and a laser focus on helping every student reach their full potential. That starts with leadership at every level.

Teachers lead classrooms.

Principals lead schools. The superintendent manages the district. The Board’s role is to set direction, provide oversight, approve the budget, and hold the system accountable.

As a parent, Army veteran, and business leader, I have spent my career in roles where decisions had to be backed by facts, measurable results, and accountability.

That is the approach I would bring to the Board: ask tough questions, insist on accurate information before major decisions, and make sure the community understands not just what decisions are being made, but why.

Trust is earned when people can see the work.”

Randolph School’s Leo Center for Excellence Aims to Bring Students, Alumni, Community Together Randolph School’s Leo Center for Excellence, which opened in March 2026, is alive with both student and community activity ahead of the 20262027 school year.

Made possible by lead donors Fay and Karl Leo, the Leo Center is a state-of-the-art, multipurpose facility on Randolph’s campus. It combines a second competition gymnasium with a top-tier weight room, locker rooms and alumni conference center. In addition to its world-class athletic training facilities, the Leo Center created space for an athletic screening room, plus a new Innovation Hub and Technology Lab for STEM programs in the original gym.

“It's an amazing addition to the school. My hat’s off to the Board of Trustees and Head of School, Adam Dubé, for conceiving of this addition,” said Karl Leo, founder and attorney at Huntsville’s Leo Law Firm, LLC. “Fay and I were so happy to be the lead donors to make the Leo Center a reality.”

Elizabeth Crampsey, Director of Marketing & Communications at Randolph School, praised the Leos for drawing community attention to the school’s need.

“Karl and Fay brought passion to this project before we even broke ground,” Crampsey said. “They did so much to help the school get our message out there.”

The facility connects to Randolph’s athletic center, facing away from Garth Road and toward the football stadium and other athletic competition fields.

When school starts this fall, the Center will be the focal point of Friday night football games and other campus activities. During summer break, the Leo Center hosts athletic training, tournaments, summer programs and more.

Reflecting a deep commitment to excellence Established in 1959, Randolph School is an independent, private college preparation school that offers a well-rounded educational experience for its students. According to Karl Leo, the school takes a “mind-body-spirit approach,” developing scholarship and performance in a nurturing environment.

Randolph’s mission statement inspired Fay Leo to choose the name

Center for Excellence. Part of that statement says, “Through a commitment to excellence in academics, the arts and athletics, the school’s program and its faculty demand diligence and discipline while encouraging creativity and discovery.”

Karl Leo said when the Upper School was initially built, Randolph didn’t have sufficient funding to build an auxiliary gym. Space for the facility was reserved on campus, but the school’s vision changed substantially by the time they were ready to build.

“This is a reflection on a much broader goal than originally conceived,” Fay Leo said. “When [the school] approached us about participating, they set out a broader vision that became very intriguing to us, and that’s what gave rise to the campaign.”

For Randolph, the Leo Center isn’t just for multiplying student opportunities; it’s also meant to bring the community together. Its spacious conference center hosts meetings for school organizations like the Randolph Community Network and the Board of Trustees and is available to the

community for conferences, workshops and events.

“This is the Swiss Army knife of school expansions,” said Karl Leo. “It brings so many different elements together in a space that facilitates academic [and athletic] progress, community involvement and alumni involvement.

“Before the Leo Center, the constraints of the school facilities repressed programmatic initiatives.

Now, we’re seeing uses for the facility that weren’t previously identified. It’s just incredible.”

Building a family and community legacy Randolph School has played a significant role in the Leo family’s life over a quarter of a century, with three of their four children attending (two are alumni). Fay has been an active volunteer throughout this time, most recently serving as head of the Upper School Randolph Community Network. Their youngest son, Landon, is a rising senior, football quarterback and varsity basketball player.

“He’s very much enjoying the facility,” said Karl Leo. “We’re so happy he’s

able to use it as a student.”

For Fay and Karl Leo, leading the charge on the Leo Center has been a way to make a powerful impact on Randolph, its students, the families that support it and the community at large. It’s also a part of the legacy they want to leave for their family.

“Part of the calling for people who have blessings–and we’ve been blessed– is to do something that is impactful and lives beyond our lifespan,” Karl Leo said.

“It becomes a legacy for your family, and this is part of that family legacy we’re trying to create. In the process, we’re creating this enduring relationship with Randolph School, which has done so much for our children.”

The Leo Center is phase one of an ongoing campus expansion, with a larger vision unfolding.

“We've been able to help meet a need, and I view Randolph as a snowball going downhill,” said Karl Leo. “It's gathering momentum, and we're just, we're so happy to be a part of that.”

"This award reflects our shared vision with the Department of War to strengthen America's Arsenal of Freedom through a transformational shift to multiyear procurement," said Tim Cahill, president, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control. "This new approach propels our efforts to strengthen the defense industrial base, expand production and deliver capabilities to the American warfighter at unprecedented speed and scale."

Lockheed Martin also recently opened its Next Generation Interceptor facility in Courtland. The 88,000 square-foot, purpose-built plant will produce the Next Generation Interceptor for the Missile Defense Agency and bolster the nation's layered missile defense architecture.

The multi-year contract heads the list of Huntsville companies or those with operations in Huntsville that recently won DOD contracts.

• Verus Research was awarded a cost-plus-fixed-fee Air Force contract with a maximum ceiling of $94,949,999 for laser effects and analysis research. This contract provides technical expertise to enhance the development of both test and data analysis capabilities. The work will be performed at Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., and is expected to be completed by June 25, 2031.

• Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control was awarded a multi-year $35 billion procurement contract for the production of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) Interceptors.

The total value of this contract is $35,327,237,604. The Missile Defense Agency on Redstone Arsenal is the contracting activity.

• Torch Technologies was awarded a $10,322,371 contract modification for Hardware-in-the-Loop systems to acquire engineering services technical directive efforts.

The modification brings the total cumulative face value of the contract to $638,791,658. The

Army Contracting Command at Redstone Arsenal is the contracting activity.

• Lockheed Martin was awarded an $8,402,489,648 contract modification to increase the ceiling and extend the ordering period for increased production capacity of Precision Strike Missiles Increment One and procurement of Early Operational Capability assets, follow-on production, development, and obsolescence management through fiscal 2032. The Army Contracting Command at Redstone Arsenal is the contracting activity.

• KBR Wyle Services was awarded a $35.9 million contract to provide systems engineering and technical assistance services including digital transformation, program management, engineering, software, cybersecurity, and logistics support for multiple air and ground-launched weapon systems. The amount of this action is $35,976,057, with a total cumulative face value of $207,915,330.

The work will be performed at Redstone Arsenal with an estimated completion date of Dec. 21, 2031. The Army Contracting Command at Redstone Arsenal is the contracting activity. w

Huntsville is called a “smart city” and that isn’t an overstatement.

The Rocket City is one of the nation's most highly educated cities.

Nearly 47.2% of adults age 25 and older hold at least a bachelor's degree, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Its three four-year universities - Alabama A&M, University of Alabama in Huntsville, and Oakwood University - help provide the engineers, scientists, researchers, professionals and business leaders who keep the city and the nation moving.

Meanwhile, among the doctoral and master’s degrees is a plethora of associate’s degrees and certificates earned by those who build the offices and install and maintain the electrical, water and HVAC systems for the buildings occupied by the engineers, researchers, healthcare professionals and business leaders who work there.

They also are the medical technicians and nurses who provide the first line of health care.

Those workers got their training through the workforce development programs at Calhoun Community College, Drake State Technical & Community College and the city and county’s public school systems through the Madison County Career Technical Center.

The courses are developed in collaboration with local employers to ensure relevance and practical application. The schools offer training in high-demand fields such as healthcare, welding, and machining.

Unlike traditional academic degree programs that require more comprehensive coursework and a longer time commitment, career training emphasizes short-term, targeted learning, and immediate job readiness.

Career training and academic pathways offer certificates, but career training certificates are typically non-credit and focus solely on applied skills for fast entry or ad-

vancement in the workforce.

An example is the Diesel Technology Program at Calhoun.

Students receive hands-on instruction in diesel engines, fuel and emissions systems, hydraulics, electronic controls, heavy vehicle

systems, and advanced diagnostics using industry-standard equipment in a modern training environment.

“This program represents exactly what Calhoun Community College is committed to doing, responding to workforce needs and

creating pathways to high-demand, high-wage careers,” said Calhoun President Dr. Jimmy Hodges.

The Drake State Community College Workforce Development Department offers innovative training programs designed to meet evolving workforce demands.

By collaborating with local businesses, industry leaders, and community organizations, the colleges ensure their programs stay relevant.

And, with flexible learning options such as online, evening, and hybrid classes, education is accessible to all.

“We are in the business of making life better for everyone,” said Alabama Community Colleges System Chancellor Jimmy Baker. “It’s our job and mission to make sure every area of this state has the resources needed to provide training and support economic development.”

ing problems. Research shows that 76% of companies in the sector say engineering jobs are the most needed and the hardest to fill, and skilled manufacturing roles face similar challenges.

To meet those challenges, a pair of aerospace/defense contractors are working with Drake State.

Leidos opened its Advanced Training Complex recently. It is a 50,000-square-foot on-campus facility which will support education and training for the aerospace and advanced manufacturing industries.

The training complex houses in-demand training programs, including precision machining and welding. It also features dedicated space for additive manufacturing, mechatronics, electrical technology, engineering design, and more, as well as lab spaces, classrooms, and offices for instructors and administration.

Last month, Boeing and Drake State unveiled a technical apprenticeship program.

The earn-while-you-learn program, based on the Drake State campus, offers three distinct skill pathways, a paycheck from day one, and a clear route to employment with Boeing’s PAC3 Seeker program and Electronic

Center of Excellence.

“We thrive on being a part of the workforce solution,” Drake State President Patricia Sims said. “At Drake State, workforce development is not just a priority, it’s a mission.”

Calhoun and Drake State also are working to fill the pipeline for health care.

Along with other disciplines, along with its nursing curriculum, Calhoun is now offering an associate of applied science in respiratory therapy.

The initiative represents a major milestone for the college and North Alabama, addressing the region’s growing demand for respiratory therapists and the rising number of patients affected by conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and pneumonia.

Drake State and Huntsville Hospital have partnered on a series of specialized nursing education and apprenticeship programs known as the Launch Program. This collaboration allows aspiring nurses to receive tuition assistance while gaining hands-on clinical experience.

“We’re excited to expand our partnership with Drake State with the RN Launch program,” said Tracy Doughty, president & COO of Huntsville Hospital. “This initiative will mirror our highly successful LPN Launch program which has had great results for our hospital and for Drake.

“Both of our organizations share a strong commitment to workforce development for our growing region.”

The state is also stepping up to answer the workforce develop-

ment needs.

The Alabama Community College System and the Alabama Association of Resource Conservation, & Development Councils are jointly offering $100,000 in scholarships for Alabama residents interested in pursuing high-demand careers in the aviation and construction industries.

The “Building Futures: Enhancing Lives with Scholarships” initiative awards $2,000 scholarships to 50 students enrolled in an eligible program at an Alabama community college. The scholarships cover tuition, books, and fees to help students gain job-ready skills.

The programs include aviation mechanics, avionics, construction management, welders and pipefitters, HVAC/R technicians, carpenters, electricians, and plumbers.

“Alabama’s aviation and construction sectors continue to grow, creating strong demand for skilled workers,” said ACCS Regional Workforce Director Gary Weaver.

“Building Futures was designed to close a critical gap by supporting students in industries essential to the state’s economic growth.” w

Pryor Field Celebrates Arrival of Cirrus Training Center It’s affectionately called “the plane with a parachute.”

And the Cirrus-made aircraft has landed at Pryor Field Regional Airport near Decatur, bringing new opportunities for pilots to train on and fly the aircraft.

Rocket City Aviation Services has expanded its presence at Pryor Field with a Cirrus Training Center bringing advanced pilot training opportunities and modern aircraft access including a Cirrus SR22 and a new Cirrus SR20, which arrived directly from the showroom floor.

The addition of these technologically advanced aircraft provides pilots and students in North Alabama access to some of the most modern and safety-focused training platforms in general aviation.

“Rocket City Aviation Services is a Cirrus training center, meaning we are an extension of their system — partners, if you will,” said Stephen Walker, co-founder of Rocket City Aviation Services. “We support them by bringing customers to their campus, training their customers, and serving as a trusted local representative for the company.”

Rocket City Aviation’s expansion enhances Pryor Field’s continued growth in aviation services, workforce development, and general aviation activity.

“Our role with Pryor Field is that of a flight school and management company; we are a large purchaser of their fuel, as well as the hangar space,” Walker said. “Our relationship with them is just as important, because they help our operations run smoothly and bring customers — experienced aviators and newcomers to general aviation — to Pryor Field.”

So, about that nickname: “The plane with a parachute.”

When there is a malfunction with the plane, a parachute deploys to lower the aircraft to the ground safely.

“On all Cirrus aircraft, the parachute deploys when a red handle on the ceiling is pulled,” Walker said. “This ejects a rocket from the back of the fuselage, pulling a parachute out with it.

It only requires 600 feet of height to fully deploy.”

And, Walker said, the feature has

performed flawlessly.

“There have been multiple instances where the parachute has been deployed and when pulled in the manner Cirrus directs (based on the height the aircraft is at and speed), it has a 100% success rate in over 250 deployments,” he said.

Another unique feature is the so-called drone safety feature. If the pilot is incapacitated, a passenger pushes a red button and the autoland system is activated.

“This button overrides all flight inputs, announces to the cabin that it has entered autoland mode and will land at the closest, most reasonable airport,” Walker said. “It accounts for wind, fuel, runway lengths, airport services, and will even transmit the aircraft's intentions to air traffic controllers.

“It will land itself, brake, and shut the engine off, then permit the occupants to escape the cabin.”

Cirrus aircraft - including the Vision Jet, the world's first single-engine civilian personal jet - also feature state-of-the-art integrated Garmin avionics that reduce pilot workload. Many Cirrus models also come standard with FIKI (Flight into Known Icing) and features such as a blue "level" button that automatically returns the aircraft to straight-and-level flight if a pilot becomes disoriented.

Rocket City Aviation offers pilots the opportunity to train for and rent the aircraft for local flights or trips, such as

a 90-minute flight to the beach.

“Certified pilots can train through the official Cirrus transition course to be checked out and eligible to rent our aircraft for local flights or trips,” Walker said. “All pilots must train personally with our instructors.

We offer opportunities for someone to train in their aircraft or to train to fly and rent our aircraft so that they can explore the opportunities of general aviation independently.”

For those of us who want to take a plane to the beach, Walker said “there is no charter service offered at this time; however, we are preparing to offer those services

in the very near future.”

Huntsville 2026 City Council Elections: Voter Guide Public safety, growth, and infrastructure all play a role in shaping daily life across Huntsville.

As voters prepare to cast their ballots in this year's municipal election on Tuesday, Aug. 25, understanding where candidates stand on these issues can help residents make informed decisions.

To help voters decide, the Huntsville Business Journal asked every candidate for the Huntsville City Council the following question: “What do you see as the single most important issue facing your district, and if elected, how would you work to address it?”

Their responses are included below.

City Council District 2 • Thomas Casez “The single most important issue facing District 2 is infrastructure investment.

Huntsville's growth has outpaced the roads, schools, and public amenities that families depend on. Overcrowded classrooms and congested corridors are now a daily reality for both long-term residents and newcomers. I say it doesn't have to be this way, and that we can change this in August.

If elected, I'll push for opportunities to increase investment in roads, schools, greenways, and public transit in our next budget; I'll work with the planning commission to ensure new development accounts for its infrastructure impact, and most of all, I'll keep residents informed and involved through regular town halls and proactive communication.

Huntsville can both grow

and remain the best city in the South. It just requires a council member willing to work for it.”

Thomas Casez is a Madison County native and software engineer. He lives in Huntsville with his wife, Rebecca, and their daughter, Ginny.

• David Little “Maintaining a strong quality of life for District 2 residents will always be my top priority— and that comes down to the everyday services that make our city work.

I will ensure our public safety departments are fully funded and staffed, because if we don't, we would not have a city worth living in. Our roads need the same commitment: consistent maintenance and a strong resurfacing budget so residents aren't waiting years for repairs.

I want to keep our neighborhood parks and recreation facilities maintained and safe because they are where so much

of our community life happens.

I am genuinely excited about the planned and approved major renovations at Goldsmith-Schiffman Park.

I'll continue working with my council colleagues and the administration to keep growth smart and steady, bringing good-paying jobs to the district and city without sacrificing the character of our neighborhoods.”

David Little is the District 2 representative on the Huntsville City Council. He currently works with a local wealth management and financial planning firm.

City Council District 3 • Jennie Robinson “Eighteen people a day are choosing to make Huntsville their home, and we need to keep our commitment to make Huntsville a great place to live, work, and raise a family. This is particularly true in our aging neighborhoods.

Eighty percent of the houses in District 3 were built before 1980. Protecting property values in these aging neighborhoods depends on good schools, a great quality of life, and easy access to shopping, medical care, and employment. I will continue to focus on quality-oflife improvements that protect property values and encourage families to move into our older South Huntsville neighborhoods.

I will also continue to work on bringing new businesses to the South Parkway, the redevelopment of Ditto Landing, and the transformation of the old Grissom High School into the Sandra Moon Center. Projects like this will make Huntsville not just the biggest city in Alabama but one of the best in the country.”

Jennie Robinson has represented District 3 on the Huntsville City Council since 2014, after serving three terms

• John Stuart John Stuart is a Huntsville native and network engineer with nearly two decades of experience in the defense industry.

• Liliana Peinder “Our district’s biggest challenge is fiscal accountability in spending and housing affordability. I’ll push for transparent budgets and smart growth.”

Liliana Peinder is an educator, entrepreneur, and community volunteer. She has participated in Huntsville's Citizens Police Academy and regularly attends City Council meetings.

City Council District 4 • Nick Frevold “Huntsville’s population growth is a great achievement, but we are growing in the wrong direction. We are spreading our resources thin by sprawling outward. Sprawling annexations and developments are adding more traffic to our roads without increasing tax revenues enough to pay for the miles of new roads and utilities these developments require.

Inward development will allow us to grow more sustainably. The developments at and around Stovehouse have added hundreds of homes and millions in additional tax revenue while putting little additional strain on our infrastructure.

I will prioritize more inward growth by legalizing ADUs and rezoning more of the city to allow mixed-use developments.

I will heavily invest in our bus, bike, and pedestrian infrastructure to increase traffic efficiency and safety. I will use my training from Strong Towns and my

current working relationships with city planners to start work on this on day one.”

Nick Frevold is a Huntsville resident, small-business owner, and community advocate. He recently launched Strong Towns Huntsville, a nonpartisan organization focused on safer streets and sustainable city growth.

• Bill Kling “The most important issue within the district I represent is a need for increased traffic flow improvement. I’m excited about the $100,000,000 Parkway at I-565 traffic flow improvement project, as well as accelerating the ring road from North Parkway to Hampton Cove, onto the Arsenal boundary, and then connecting onto Alabama #255. Relieving traffic congestion in the central portion of the city will help District 4 a great deal in the future.”

Bill Kling has represented District 4 on the Huntsville City Council since 1988, after previously serving on the Huntsville Board of Education. He has worked in broadcasting, public relations, and higher education.

• Will Pylant “The biggest issue facing District 4 is making sure we are prepared for Huntsville’s continued growth while protecting the quality of life that makes our city such a special place to live.

Growth is a great thing, but it also brings challenges, and we have to be proactive in how we address them.

That means making sure our roads and infrastructure keep up, supporting our schools, prioritizing public safety, and investing in the community spaces that bring people together, like our parks, downtown library, historic areas, and the arts.

As a father of two young children, a small business owner,

and someone who grew up here, I care deeply about the future of Huntsville. I want to bring a practical, forward-thinking approach that helps our city prepare for what’s next.

Huntsville has changed a lot over the last 38 years, and I be-

lieve our leadership should be ready for the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

Madison County Home Listings, Pending Sales Rise in June 2026 Home listings and pending sales in Madison County increased in June 2026, while total home inventory rose.

According to data from the Huntsville Area Association of Realtors (HAAR), for the week ending July 4, 2026, new single-family home listings in Madison County increased by 5.4% year-over-year, with 176 new homes listed on the market.

The three-month average came in at 210 listings, a 9.2% year-over-year increase.

Pending sales on single-family homes were up by 25% year-overyear, with 145 sales pending. The three-month average of pending sales was 159, an 18.9% increase yearover-year.

Total single-family home inventory rose by 5% year-over-year to 2,257. The three-month average inventory of 2,132 homes reflected a

3.6% year-over-year increase.

Houses in Madison County spent an average of 42 days on the market before selling in June 2026, a 5% year-over-year increase. Over the 12-month period ending June 2026, homes spent an average of 53 days

on the market, a 7% year-over-year increase.

The median sale price of singlefamily homes in Madison County was $345,000 in June 2026, a 1.1% year-over-year decrease. Median home prices remain stable, with the

annual median at $335,000, unchanged year over year.

On average, home sellers in Madison County received 98.9% of their listing price, a slight increase of 0.2% year-over-year. Between June 2025 and June 2026, sellers received a one-year average of 98.5% of the listing price, with no change yearover-year.

Madison County’s housing affordability index was 90 in June, a 3.4% year-over-year increase.

The annual average was 94, a slight 0.5% year-over-year decrease.

The housing affordability index measures regional affordability.

An index of 90 for June indicates the median household income was 90% of what is necessary to qualify for the median-priced house under current interest rates. The higher the number, the greater the affordability. w

Orion Amphitheater ranked among top 10 venues worldwide in ticket sales Maybe Huntsville ought to modify its nickname to the “Rock it City.”

According to the latest rankings from Pollstar, Huntsvillians are definitely enjoying the sounds of music - particularly at the Orion Amphitheater.

The four-year-old venue in Huntsville’s MidCity District is rocketing toward the top of the charts in Pollstar's prestigious Mid-Year Top Grossing and Top Ticket Sales rankings.

The Orion ranked No. 8 worldwide by gross ticket sales and No. 10 worldwide by tickets sold in the rankings from Pollstar, the live entertainment industry's leading trade publication.

Little did he know that his expertise as the city’s manager of Urban and LongRange Planning would come into play for a board game.

Next year, the Rocket City will be the setting for Monopoly: Huntsville Edition and Madsen was on hand - with Mr. Monopoly, Uncle Pennybags - to make the announcement.

“Huntsville is taking its rightful

Hasbro licensee Top Trumps USA is seeking well-established Huntsville businesses and nonprofits to be part of this one-of-a-kind tribute which will debut in March.

Huntsville International Airport sets all-time monthly passenger record With the white sands of the Gulf Coast an added draw, Huntsville International Airport recorded its busiest month on record in May. Allegiant launched nonstop service to Gulf Shores last month and the boost helped lift the airport to a record 173,748 passengers, a 10.7% increase compared to May 2025.

Through the first five months of 2026, passenger traffic is up 7.6% compared to the same period in 2025, officials said.

The record-setting month reflects

continued growth in passenger demand across North Alabama and the Tennessee Valley as more travelers choose the convenience of flying from Huntsville, officials said.

“These record-breaking numbers are the result of our community choosing to fly local and support Huntsville International Airport,” said Joey Ceci, Port of Huntsville board chair.

The strong May performance continues a trend of sustained growth for Huntsville International Airport.

Also, as more travelers choose to fly from HSV, other airlines have responded by expanding service, increasing capacity, and offering additional nonstop destinations for travelers across North Alabama.

“Because travelers continue to choose HSV, our airline partners continue to add service and invest in our market,” Ceci said. “We appreciate the support of our passengers and look forward to building on this momentum.”

Allegiant’s Gulf Shores service, its fourth nonstop destination from Huntsville, provides travelers with an additional convenient, low-cost travel option.

Breeze Airways now operates daily service to Orlando, one of the airport’s strongest leisure markets, providing travelers seven-day-a-week access to one of the nation’s most popular vacation destinations.

“If travelers continue to fly local and check HSV’s competitive fares first, we believe the airport is well-positioned for continued growth,” said Airport CEO Butch Roberts.

Huntsville offers nonstop service to 18 destinations across the United States and continues to work closely with airlines to identify opportunities for future growth.

UAH study: Ultrasound therapy may help reduce inflammation and support joint healing The “snap, crackle, pop” that some of us wake up to in the morning - no, not the cereal - may be a thing of the past.

According to a study by University of Alabama in Huntsville researchers, ultrasound therapy may help accelerate tissue repair for joint injuries and some cases of osteoarthritis.

Their findings suggest continuous low-intensity ultrasound may help shift the body's immune response from prolonged inflammation toward tissue repair, a discovery that could eventually contribute to novel treatments for joint injuries and post-traumatic osteoarthritis.

The study, published in the Nature journal Scientific Reports, was conducted by a multidisciplinary team under the leadership of Dr. Anuradha Subramanian, professor of chemical and materials engineering. The work included biological experimentation by Dr. Shahid Khan as part of his doctoral work with computational and statistical methods developed by Dr. Satyaki Roy, professor of mathematical sciences, along with contributions from graduate student Owen Trippany.

The research examined how a noninvasive form of ultrasound affects macrophages, specialized immune cells that play a central role in both inflammation and healing.

“Following injury, the body recruits inflammatory 'defender' macrophages to clear damaged tissue and healer macrophages to support repair and recovery,” Subramanian said. “Persistent dominance

of defender macrophages can create a prolonged inflammatory environment that contributes to post-traumatic osteoarthritis.”

The UAH team investigated whether continuous low-intensity ultrasound could encourage macrophages to move away from this prolonged inflammatory state and toward one associated with tissue repair.

“Post-traumatic osteoarthritis is driven in part by persistent inflammation that limits tissue repair and accelerates joint degeneration,” Roy said. “Our team is interested in continuous low-intensity ultrasound because it offers a non-pharmacological, non-invasive approach that may help regulate immune cell behavior and promote a more reparative healing environment in injured joints.”

While the work remains at the laboratory research stage, the findings highlight the potential of non-drug, non-invasive technologies to influence immune behavior and support healing after injury. The researchers believe the approach could ultimately complement future therapies aimed at slowing the progression of osteoarthritis and improving recovery following joint trauma.

“The next steps will involve validat-

ing these findings in animal models of early post-traumatic osteoarthritis and studying how ultrasound-based modulation affects long-term tissue repair in joint injury settings,” Subramanian said. w
