I hope you’re enjoying the springtime weather in the Valley. It seems more than half the people I run into have terrible sinus issues this time of year, but the sight of bountiful blooms of picturesque flowers seem to override one’s ailments of pollen overload. After all, many residents take refuge in the outdoors here in Huntsville, whether it’s a good game of golf or tennis, or running, hiking or biking the trails on Green or Monte Sano mountains. Outdoors in Huntsville this time of year, while enjoyable, can leave you reaching for the Claritin.

With plenty to do in and outdoors, we’ve been covering as much as we can on both fronts. From the Bacon & Beer Bash at Straight to Ale, Crawfish Boil at the Von Braun Center, and UCP’s Annual Irish Evening to the Huntsville Museum of Art's Dinner & Cocktail Party, there’s never a shortage of things to do. Over 400 guests attended the Huntsville Museum of Art’s 24th Annual Gala, Silent Auction and Cocktail Party on Saturday, March 7.

The event was held in the galleries and halls of the museum, which were beautifully decorated with elegantly draped fabrics, candle chandeliers, couches, and coffee tables.

It was a perfect blend of sophistication and comfort. Food and drinks were provided

by Lyn’s Gracious Goodness and the flowers and décor were arranged by Ron Cooper and Mark Kimbrough of In Bloom. Atlanta's fantastic seven-member band band THE MAXX lit up the dance floor with their music and energy.

More than 150 items were auctioned including 17 works from the featured artist Dean Mitchell.

“Our art chairmen Melanie Murray and Kathryn Price began researching online and shopping southeast art galleries last summer when Dean Mitchell’s work caught their attention,” said Patti Thornton, one of the Gala’s Chairwomen.

Mr. Mitchell’s work was showcased in its own gallery at the museum from February 7 until the event when participants were invited to place sealed bids on his work.

This fundraising season raised over $270,000 for the Huntsville Museum of Art. This money will be used to bring exhibitions to the region, art classes for children and adults, special programs, lectures, and musical presentations. This should help the museum keep its status as one of the Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel’s “Top 10” destinations. n

Nearly 200 people gathered at the Huntsville Museum of Art for the 24th Annual Gala Black Tie Dinner and Live Auction on Friday, March 6. The event was originally scheduled for Thursday night but had to be moved due to ice.

“It did not hurt the attendance at all,” said one of the Gala Chairwomen Patti Thornton.

“In fact, people seemed to be in a celebratory mood and really had a great time.”

The dinner and live auction took place in the Loretta Spencer Hall with elegant table settings, food and drinks by James Boyce of Cotton Row, and music by members of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra’s string section. The stunning décor and flower arrangements were provided by Ron Cooper and Mark Kimbrough of In Bloom.

There were 20 items at the live auction including trips, parties, and jewelry. Most of the items were paintings including one from the featured artist Dean Mitchell who is considered to be one of the most highly regarded American watercolorists of our time.

Most everyone dreams of starting their own business someday. “I wonder what it would be like if…” they say to their friends. Most people stop the conversation there, and their business dreams fade. Starting a company is hard work, but the driving forces behind Haley’s Flooring and Interiors are no stranger to labor.

Founded in 1998 by husband and wife team Carter and Nancy Haley, the original company was dubbed Carpet Systems of Huntsville. The duo was quickly joined by their two sons, Chris and Michael, and it soon became apparent that a business

a rustic and industrial feel, and can be paired with flooring products such as brick porcelain tile, which is reminiscent of an old brick wall.

Haley’s slogan is “A Foundation of Excellence,” and their goal is to offer nothing less than the best in home needs. Kristi said, “Whether you’re simply choosing a fabric, an accessory, or you need a whole home makeover, our decorators are here to advise and work with you in our showroom or in your home. We want you to LOVE your home! Every aspect of our business – from the way we treat our staff and customers, to the products we supply and the level of service we provide – is built around a goal to be excellent in all we do.”

While they do have future plans for several locations, Haley’s is passionate about investing in the Huntsville community. In 2013, they decided to offer a local family a brand new kitchen. Based on public voting, and after thousands of entries, cancer survivor Ron Potter and his wife Delita were voted the winners of a Dream Kitchen Makeover. Haley’s completely gutted and remodeled their kitchen, giving them a wholly new and functional look. “This is probably our greatest ‘success story,’ but to us, success is not just a happy customer,” said Kristi. “Success is knowing that God has blessed our business and it is our opportunity to be His hands and feet, reaching out to bless others.”

Carpet Systems of Huntsville was re-branded as Haley’s Flooring and Interiors, becoming one of the Top 50 Specialty Flooring Retailers in the United States. They have also been covered by Floor Covering Weekly for the past four years.

In 2000, Haley’s opened an interiors showroom to the public, offering various area rugs, home furnishings, accessories, and Liberty Safes. In 2010, they began to offer kitchen and bath cabinets, as well as granite and quartz countertops (assembled in their own facility). “If you visit our showroom today, you’ll find a wide variety of flooring, backsplashes, fabrics, lamps, wall art, mirrors, and our new signature furniture collection with custom-designed finishes,” said Kristi. “Come to think of it, we’re kind of like a home resource place.”

Huntsville’s newest Gothic Guild members were presented on March 14 at the 31st Annual Gothic Guild Victorian Cotillion Dinner Dance. Over 750 members, joined by family and friends, celebrated at the organization’s largest fundraiser, held at the Von Braun Center.

The sweet smell of fresh roses and hydrangeas filled the air while guests, dressed in their cocktail-best, danced the night away to the sounds of Craig Duncan Orchestra of Nashville.

Julie Leary, dinner dance chair, welcomed guests with Brenda Milberger, president of the Gothic Guild. Karen Kimbrough, Cotillion chair and both etiquette chairmen, Amy Heinrich and Jacque Hudson were also in attendance.

The Cotillion began as a fundraising endeavor to preserve and maintain Steamboat Gothic House, located on Lowe Avenue. Though the home was later sold, the group continued to allow their members to choose a different organization each year to benefit from the event. In the past 31 years the Cotillion has returned $600,000 to the community, providing around $30,000 for this year’s organization.

The youngest members, who are chosen by an anonymous community committee, must be 16 years of age or enrolled as a sophomore in a high school in the city of Huntsville or in Madison County to be eligible for invitation. The Gothic Guild also evaluates the girl’s academic records, church and social activities, and leadership through participation in school.

The Gothic Guild works to promote the cultural, educational or historical preservation of Madison County. Proceeds from this year’s Victorian Cotillion will benefit Lincoln Village Ministry. n

Clearview Cancer Institute’s (CCI) expansive lobby was bursting at the seams as the 6th Annual White Linen & Wine event drew a crowd of over 400 supporters of the Russel Hill Cancer Foundation on Saturday, February 28.

Breaking records in attendance and exceeding expectations in fundraising, the foundation raised over $110,000 for cancer research, cancer education, and patient assistance, all of which stays here in the local community. Tish Pegues, Loretta Spencer, and Gary Garmany were the 2015 honorees.

According to the foundation’s executive director, Mary Beth Davis, they had a record of nearly 100 people walk-up and buy tickets at the door, thanks in part to cabin fever from the snow in the days leading up to the event. “We sent out over 300 invitations and the event is always opened to the public, but we were thrilled at how many

people just wanted to get out, enjoy some dancing and a wine tasting, all for a wonderful cause,” says Davis.

Heavy hors d’oeuvres catered by Margaret Baggett of the Chef Next Door complemented an upscale wine tasting hosted by Huntsville’s Wine Cellar, who provided many international wines that are difficult or impossible to buy locally. Local rock-star-by-night and critical care surgeon and founder of Huntsville Hospital’s Trauma Center, Dr. Rony Najjar, led his popular band, Junctional Rhythm in dance tunes throughout the evening.

Built on a 900-acre plantation known in 1816 as “Russel Hill,” CCI is home to the foundation started in 2006 by a group of oncologists, local researchers, and interested citizens. n

Leukemia & Lymphoma Fundraising Competition Kicks Off Written by Morgan Hopper

For this process, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society selects a group of individuals from the community to participate in the Man & Woman of the Year fundraising competition. Each candidate conducts their own 10-week campaign, trying to accumulate the most votes in the form of monetary donations. Even though they are in competition, all candidates are united by one goal; to use their leadership skills to raise funds to help patients with these types of blood cancer live longer and more fulfilling lives. The male and female candidates who raise the most “votes” during the campaign are named Huntsville’s Man & Woman of the Year at the Grand Finale Gala, an event that will happen in June. A midpoint party will take place at Huntsville’s new venue Belle Faire on April 30th.

Jeff Parsley, LLS Executive Director from Nashville and Lori Friel, LLS Campaign Manager from Knoxville both attended to assist Lauren Barrett, Huntsville’s campaign specialist, while Joe Vallely served as the mission speaker. Spotlight Sarah Savage President/CEO, Leadership Huntsville/Madison County

Cultivating their 29th Class in 2015, Leadership Huntsville/Madison County got its start in 1987 when leaders from the Chamber of Commerce of Huntsville/Madison County heard about an explosion of successful Leadership programs growing across the country. Incubated as part of the Chamber of Commerce Foundation until 2010 when it became an independent entity, Leadership president and CEO Sarah Savage has been with the organization for more than half its tenure.

EVENT: What is Leadership Huntsville?

SS: Leadership Huntsville identifies community leaders, educates them in leadership initiatives, inspires them to act, and connects them with other leaders to make things happen. They come from diverse backgrounds and all age groups beginning with ninth grade through retirement age. They represent all areas of education, government, business, healthcare, and nonprofit organizations.

In the schools, they come from Future Farmers of America, athletes, band, and ROTC. They are from public, private, parochial, and homeschools.

EVENT: Tell us about the classes.

SS: We have six different classes going year-round.

Our longest adult class is a 10-month commitment.

They must commit to one 12-hour day per month.

They pay tuition, which is how we fund ourselves.

The community is our classroom. We study healthcare; human services; local, state, and federal government; and public safety. We talk about quality of life issues; the arts, leisure, and culture.

We discuss diversity and how well we are doing in that area; and how the differences between Generation X and Generation Y play out in our society. Each class also participates in a small group project.

Huntsville Utilities’ Project Share is a Leadership project from Class 1; the Community Foundation

of Huntsville/Madison County is an outgrowth of Leadership. Leadership graduates go on to build playgrounds; to form nonprofit organizations and to populate nonprofit boards; they are appointed to commissions; and many go on to run for public office or to run political campaigns. They also get their companies and employees more engaged in the community as a whole.

EVENT: There are so many aspects to a community; isn’t it hard to get everyone in the right place?

SS: There are four types of community capital: Built Capital like infrastructure, roads, buildings, equipment you need for your community to succeed. The quality of Built Capital differentiates communities that really kick it from those that don’t. Social Capital is the opportunities, places for people to meet and things for people to do; an atmosphere for networking and engagement in the community.

Then there is Natural Resource Capital, green space like parks, lakes and recreational space, for which Huntsville has plenty; and then the most important thing for economic development: Human Capital. How well do we engage our citizens? How do we mobilize them to act?

EVENT: Tell us about this national alliance of Leadership programs coming to Huntsville in June.

SS: I am on the Board of Directors for the Association of Leadership Programs (ALP) based in Texas, and June 18-20, they will bring between 300 and 500 people from Leadership programs all over the country to Huntsville to share Best Practices from their communities. We are excited because it has been over twenty years since this national conference was held in Alabama, and we competed against eleven cities to bring it here. n

The ADDY Awards, established in 1969, are the world’s largest advertising competition and the only creative awards program administered by the advertising industry for the industry. The American Advertising Federation recognizes creativity in all forms at the ADDYs through its 200 member advertising clubs and 15 districts. Entries submitted from North Alabama are considered by a group of judges that are professionals in the industry from a different market.

Over 300 people attended the 2015 Rocket City Bacon and Beer Bash at Straight to Ale Brewery on April 15, 2015. Patrons of the event enjoyed local craft beer, delicious food and fun music, all while raising money for local veterans. This year the bash raised $5,700 for charity.

What started out as a football party for friends has grown into an annual, sold-out charity event.

“I was planning a football party at Straight to Ale four years ago and wanted to do a bacon and beer happy hour as a practice run and it blew up in my face,” said Jeff Sanders, founder and organizer of the Bacon and Beer Bash.

The positive response of the first bash was overwhelming and Sanders saw an opportunity to benefit a local charity. In 2013 he partnered with Still Serving Veterans to create this annual fundraising event. Still Serving Veterans is a charity that helps veterans and their families receive services and benefits they have earned by connecting them to community aid, as well as expanding their career opportunities.

This year patrons enjoyed bacon-inspired fare such as bacon plank cheeseburgers, bacon explosion tacos, bacon-wrapped jalapeños, jambalaya bacon bowls, and even bacon infused caramels.

The band, 45 Surprise, provided toe-tapping music and Ms. Baconette entertained guests by dancing with fellow bacon-loving attendees.

All this bacon and beer goodness could not have happened without Sanders’ vision and leadership, platinum sponsors Trideum Corp and Straight to Ale Brewery, along with Still Serving Veterans’ staff and a team of 40 volunteers. n

2015 Heads-n-Tails Crawfish Boil Few things signal the approach of summer in the South quite like a traditional crawfish boil.

On April 11 the Von Braun Center hosted the 5th Annual Heads-n-Tails Crawfish Boil at the South Hall. Over 5,500 people enjoyed free attendance, live music, craft beer and of course, crawfish.

“We had 3,000 pounds of crawfish and 1,500 pounds of other seafood!” said Lacy Pruitt Fitzpatrick of the Von Braun Center.

In addition to copious amounts of crawfish, patrons also enjoyed shrimp, oysters, crab claws and even alligator. Le Fleur de lis Burger was there to provide creole cuisine for attendees wanting something other than seafood.

New to this year’s event was a large parquet dance floor for the Cajun & Zydeco Dancers. “[The dancing] was a huge hit and we plan to keep the dance floor as part of the event, moving forward,” said Fitzpatrick.

There’s always so much to do and see in our community. The Purdy Butterfly House at the Huntsville Botanical Garden has come to life with a kaleidoscope of colors and fluttering wings. Visit “Nature Connects Art with LEGO® Bricks”. You’ll see 27 amazing sculptures made from nearly half a million LEGO® bricks by artist Sean Kenney. This world-class exhibit will be at the Garden through July 26.

The talented staff of Burritt on the Mountain has done it again! “Time Travel Adventure” is their awesome new activity where you can go on a scavenger hunt through time, back to the 1800s. It’s an awesome adventure for the whole family. While you’re there, check out “From Cotton to the Cosmos, A Huntsville Retrospective,” their look at over 200 years of history of this remarkable city. It’s also time to enjoy the breath-taking view while savoring the outstanding musical offerings at the City Lights & Stars Concert Series.

The Cotton Row Run is once again scheduled for Memorial Day which kicks off the traditional summer season. You can take part in this annual 10K event or just pause to cheer the runners on during their ambitious trek. Be sure to catch the Dixie Derby Girls roller derby team as well as the Alabama Hammers and their hard-hitting arena football action. Stop by the Visitor Center for an All-Star Sports Pass for special buy-one, get-one free coupons then head out with your family and friends to cheer our teams on to victory!

Take advantage of the fresh produce at the local farmer’s markets including the Greene Street Market at Nativity on Thursday nights and the Madison City Farmers Market at Trinity Baptist Church on Hughes Road on Saturday mornings. Downtown Huntsville is an extremely popular district with lots of activities planned this spring and summer.

The “Family Fun Festival and Expo” at the Von Braun Center is a free event full of kids’ activities and performances throughout the day on June 6. “Taste the Spirit of Madison,” sponsored by the Madison Chamber of Commerce, is another great family fun festival. Head out to the Insanity Complex on June 13 for food trucks, shopping, live music and more!

Don’t forget to take off to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center to see “The Robot Zoo.” This traveling exhibit features eight robot animals and over a dozen hands-on activities sure to fascinate visitors of all ages. Stay for their weekly Thursday night Biergarten.

It’s an out-of-this-world location to stein and dine, rain or shine! The Space Center also has one of the most spectacular 4th of July fireworks shows in the country.

Von Braun Center’s 40th Anniversary Celebration The Von Braun Center celebrated its 40th anniversary with day of action on March 21. Opening the day was a 5K with 300 runners participating. An open house that highlighted each section of the center followed the race, with music, entertainment, food, and more. Around 2,500 people attended. Named in honor of Dr. Werner Von Braun, the civic complex opened March 14, 1975. n

West Point Society Celebration The West Point Society of the Tennessee Valley celebrated the founding of the United States Military Academy by Thomas Jefferson on 16 March 1802. The guest speaker was Medal of Honor recipient Paul Bucha. The society also honored Randy Withrow for founding the U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum in Huntsville. n

Yuri’s Night, the annual celebration of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s first flight into space in 1981, was held at Lincoln Mills this year. The Painted Violin Society held a reception at Servis1st Bank for the unveiling of two painted violins, which were auctioned at the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guild’s annual fundraiser, The Crescen-Dough Auction.

Servis1st employees were on hand to graciously welcome guests upon arrival while Lyn's Gracious Goodness provided light hors d’oeuvres and delicious bite-sized desserts.
