As I write my letter for this issue, we are in the throes of the Christmas season and rounding out the last of 2016. And what a year it has been. 2016 was filled with great times and sad times. Many of us welcomed new lives into our families and dealt with crushing loss. We had the largest lottery winner of 1.6 billion dollars, the Zika virus, Peyton Manning’s retirement, the loss of Prince, (or the artist formerly known as Prince) and finished off the year with the historic 2016 presidential election. All this and more while the earth spun on its axis 365 times. As busy as our own lives have been, we still must strive to better the community around us. Let’s all try to make a difference in our community and help the less fortunate, not only during the holiday season, but all year long.
We hope you enjoy this issue we’ve put together. As usual, we’ve been covering as many events as we can fit into this magazine, but also have some tips on getting and staying healthy. Fashion to help you look good while getting fit, plus tempting bites that aren’t big-on-the-bulge are included.

Margarita Ball Makes Christmas Wishes Come True Photos by Steve Babin Around 2000 guests attended the 21st Annual Huntsville Margarita Ball on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at the VBC South Hall. The evening served to provide Christmas gifts for children among 17 local charities. This year, the organization was able to collect 3,674 toys.
Atlanta’s Party Nation provided the evening’s entertainment. Over 20 sponsors made the evening a success, ranging from local food and beverage businesses, lighting and production companies and the Von Braun Center.

Huntsville Botanical Garden commemorated their 21st year of The Galaxy of Lights with a VIP party on November 9 at the Garden. The event served as a way to thank the sponsors of the holiday extravaganza.

The Avenue’s Preview Party on October 20, 2016 was a true celebration of downtown Huntsville’s vibrancy. Over 100 people relished the sneak peek into the Rocket City’s newest urban boutique loft community that features 197 apartments, and 21,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space.
As the guests enjoyed appetizers from Mezza Luna, beer and wine from the Church Street Wine Shoppe, and Sinatra-inspired tunes by Dave McConnell, they had an opportunity to explore The Avenue’s resort-style amenities including a state-of-theart fitness center and Pilates/yoga studio, two spacious galleries complete with Wi-Fi and flat-screen televisions, and a beautiful, sun-soaked saltwater pool. The lofts themselves were the pride of the party with their luxe finishes, spacious floor plans, and breathtaking balcony views of downtown. The Avenue is now open and welcomes new residents daily. n

The owners and staff were on hand to greet guests and help them choose items for their lists. John Henry, the shop dog, attended as well. “John Henry is a rock star here,” said Brazelton. “People stop in to see him even when they’re not shopping!” Lyn’s Gracious Goodness provided small hors d’oeuvres. A festive pre-holiday Brunch was hosted by Huntsville Hospital Foundation and Century BMW and took place at noon on November 20, 2016 at the BMW Showroom. The BMW Brunch is the Huntsville Hospital Foundation’s longest-standing, most traditional event and takes place each year on the Sunday before Thanksgiving.

Guests enjoyed a delicious seated meal catered by Cotton Row with flowers and décor arranged by Randy Roper. Guests had the chance to win fabulous prizes including the grand prize, which was the use of a new BMW for one year.
This year’s brunch benefited The Caring House, whose staff offers age-appropriate youth bereavement support and gives them the freedom to express themselves through many forms of active, engaging therapy. The program features group sessions, arts & crafts, creative play – even a volcano room for expressing anger – as well as music therapy, journaling and visits by Therapy Partner pets. Huntsville Hospital Foundation and the Huntsville Track Club presented the 13th annual Liz Hurley Ribbon Run on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at Huntsville Junior High School.
Participating in this year’s run were more than 6000 runners and walkers along with spectators and cheerleaders. The event, featuring a 5K run and Survivors’ Walk, was established in honor of local news anchor and breast cancer survivor, Liz Hurley. Hurley, the event chair, was in attendance, along with co-chair Annette McAdams and special guest Marijane Jerauld.

Proceeds from the 2016 race will be used to purchase a biopsy system used in conjunction with 3D mammography and allow radiologist to perform 3D tomoassisted breast biopsies. The Lie of Motivation Jason Edwards, Studio Manager at Orange Theory Fitness shares his expertise on getting fit and the truth about getting started.
We’ve all seen it. That moment in a film like Rocky where someone hears an inspirational speech and goes on to perform a training montage that stirs us all. You know, the one that makes you want to sprint up some museum stairs and raise your hands up in victory, with the rest of your life following in perfect harmony. All he needed was that one spark of motivation to drag him out of his all-time low and then, all was well. With all due respect to Rocky, and trust me that movie is a staple in my collection, motivation like that is a lie. It doesn’t strike from the sky like a lightning bolt, it doesn’t crash over you like a wave, and if you are solely relying on it to carry you through, it doesn’t last.
The problem is that we have reversed the order of things. We feel motivation should come first and then we’re able to achieve our goals. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Studies show that those who just start an activity achieve higher levels of motivation. So, the key is to just start. Quit waiting for when the kids are older, your work schedule slows down, or the stock market rebounds. Just start moving. That’s when the magic happens. You start to see progress towards your goals, and that, in turn, causes an increase in motivation. That increase in motivation leads to an increase in movement, and that increase in movement brings about greater progress towards your goals. Before you know it, you have to develop a new set of goals because you’ve already accomplished your original ones. Start moving today, even if you don’t feel like it, and you will be successful. n

Nutcracker Ball Kicks off Season with Gala Fundraiser

The Women’s Guild of the Huntsville Ballet celebrated the 8th annual Nutcracker Ball and Gala on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at the Westin Hotel Ballroom. The event served as a kick-off celebration of the Nutcracker Season.
Guests enjoyed cocktails and had the chance to bid on items in a silent auction before being treated to a dance performance by the cast of the Nutcracker. After dinner, the festivities continued with a live auction followed by dancing to the tunes of The Groove. Proceeds from the event benefit the Huntsville Ballet School, Huntsville Ballet Company Discover Dance and community outreach programs.
The Women’s Guild of Huntsville Ballet is a support organization for the ballet school and company. They strive to promote both the school and company in the community as well as raise funds for each. The guild is a committee of Community Ballet Association. n

Around 300 guests gathered on October 21 at the Historic Roundhouse Depot to raise funds for the Madison County Volunteer Lawyers Program at Pro Bono Brews.
The event was catered by Taco Mama with entertainment by 45 Surprise.
Pro Bono Brews was a casual event showcasing premier craft beers from twenty Alabama breweries. The evening was capped off with several awards, including Best Overall to the favorite brewery of the evening, which went to Rocket Republic. The Fan Favorite was Ironside Winter Warmer from Below the Radar, with Goat Island Brewing taking home Best Presentation. Nicole Schroeder said, “Special thanks to our guest judges who were assigned with the difficult task of sampling all of the yummy brews provided.”

WEDC Leadership Conference Provides Leadership Building and More
On November 3 and 4, 2016 the Women’s Economic Development Council hosted a Leadership Conference for North Alabama men and women. The event provided attendees with high-caliber speakers, knowledgeable panel discussions, and teambuilding exercises. Additionally, the teams’ collaborative efforts culminated with a surprise donation of bicycles, which the teams had built, to twenty-one kids from the Boys and Girls Club, providing an emotionally uplifting ending to a powerful learning experience. The kick-off event on Thursday night at the US Space and Rocket Center’s Davidson Center, featured a reception and dinner with speaker Megan Watt, Chief Dream Maker, of Dream Catalyst Labs. Megan’s new book is “DISCOVER.ACT.ENGAGE,” and she used points from the book to help lead the group in an innovative networking exercise that provided specialized connecting opportunities. n

2017 Victorian Cotillion Club
The Gothic Guild is pleased to announce that 36 young ladies will participate in the 2017 Victorian Cotillion Club, a program sponsored by the Gothic Guild.
The Victorian Cotillion Club was chartered in 1985. Each year, members are given five weeks of instruction emphasizing the timeless social graces that continue to befit today's lifestyle. Social activities of the Victorian Cotillion will include a formal mother-daughter tea, a formal dinner at Valley Hill Country Club and a father-daughter luncheon at the Ledges. The Victorian Cotillion Dinner Dance will be held at the VBC North Hall on March 11, 2017.

Other criteria for selection include a good academic record as well as demonstration of leadership through participation in school, church, social and civic activities.

Meadow Creek Farm provided the perfect backdrop for the 13th Annual Autumn Evening with Friends, Inc. on October 14.
Guests dined then danced to the tunes of the Flashbacks Showband, after a welcome by Greg Burgess. The centerpiece was arranged by In Bloom while Shannon Siegel and Shari Poteat filled the barn with lanterns, mums, gourds and pumpkins. Catering by Narvell provided a down-home meal of baby back ribs, beef brisket, catfish bites and more.
The event raised $29,000 providing financial assistance for volunteer support to seriously-ill or disabled patients. Financial support from the event enables patients to maintain independence and stay in their homes while undergoing medical care and treatments. Gold sponsor was Clearview Cancer Institute; Silver Sponsor was Jerry Damson, plus a long list of Bronze Sponsors.

Healthy living doesn’t necessarily mean spending hours in the gym. Getting started and gaining strength, and maybe, just maybe, having fun, can make integrating exercise into your lifestyle less have-to and more want-to.
Chandra Medelin at Fitzgerald Pilates (The Fitz, for short) stated, “The advice we give is to chill out and understand that we all have to get started. It’s not about a number on the scale. It’s about being strong from the center out. Hitting the Barre
Low impact exercise means that one foot must always be in contact with the ground or that weight is supported by water or a machine. These workouts are easy on joints and work for most any fitness level.
Meredith Hansom, owner of Pure Barre declared, of their particular brand, “If you can hold on to a ballet barre and listen, you can do Pure Barre. That’s what I love about it.” Pure Barre focuses on the troublesome areas of women’s bodies with a program of strengthening followed by stretching. “To optimize cardiovascular results and increase total body strength, I recommend Pure Barre Platform,” advised Hansom, referring to a class that involves quick bursts of high intensity but still remains low impact.

Stars Danced for HEALS at VBC

Local “stars” gathered on October 24 to put on amazing performances for a worthy cause. Celebrating the 10th anniversary event at the VBC’s North Hall, the event raised awareness and funds for services offered by HEALS.
All the stars who danced this year were legacies who had previously danced for HEALS. The event boasted 800 guests. Lighting and sound was provided by Sound Source Productions.
Stars were: Dr. John and Paulina Waples, who danced as a couple; Ginger Harper; David Bier; Dr. Steven Werdehoff; Leslie Ware; Annette Birchfield; Sonja Enfinger and Kenny Anderson. The Waples took first place as Top Champion for Children (top fundraiser,) breaking their previous record and setting a new record, as well as Crowd Favorite.

Spotlight Henry Turner, an eighth-generation Huntsvillian, had ancestors in the area before Alabama became a state. Turner’s interest in history and keeping it alive led to his current interest in research and teaching. EVENT: What is your education background? HT: I attended Huntsville City Schools, undergraduate and graduate at Jacksonville State University with major in Business Administration.
EVENT: What is your profession? HT: After college, I began in the world of medical supply sales. I later entered the world of contracting of home remodeling. Probably the most enjoyable was working with Big Spring Partners in its downtown revitalization project. I presently do historical research of various types.
EVENT: What are your goals? HT: It is my desire to help see that Huntsville’s rich history and past are not forgotten, by teaching the young to enjoy history and to see that Huntsville has a proud past. It began with the migration of people hearing of its rich resources, which is the same reason for its continued prosperity and the present day influx of people. It is the responsibility of the young to keep it alive, to write new annals of history to add to our already impressive journal of Huntsville’s biographies.
EVENT: What philanthropic projects are dear to you and why? HT: I served as president of Huntsville Pilgrimage Association, an organization that repairs and restores monuments at Maple Hill Cemetery. This was accomplished by initiating a tour of homes in the three historic districts as well as a Cemetery Stroll, which features characters dressed in period clothing as colorful, historic or prominent citizens of Huntsville’s past. I personally researched and applied for the addition of Maple Hill to the State Register of Historic Cemeteries. I, along with another spearheaded the project of getting Maple Hill and the Five Points district named to the National Register. I’ve served as vice president of Huntsville Historic Society and presently serve with the State Bicentennial Committee and The Federation of Historians for the 200th birthday of Alabama celebration coming up in 2019. I worked with Huntsville Madison County Veterans Memorial Foundation in building

I researched properties in Huntsville including the recent downtown project, The Avenue. I’ve worked with Kids to Love Foundation; volunteered at Panoply and perform yearly in the opening scene of “The Nutcracker” with the Huntsville Ballet Company. I also have, for the past 20 years, dressed as Santa and stood on the roof top for parents to let their little ones catch Santa on the roof on Christmas Eve. The joy for me is hearing the squeals of delight and giving them a lasting magical memory.
EVENT: What do you like about Huntsville? HT: I am always proud when asked, ‘Where are you from?’ I have seen Huntsville grow from a small town into a large city. I love its diverse history and that it was able to grow from a cotton town into the Space Capital of the World. It has a rich high-tech industry making it second to none, but it still is a cotton producer, the industry upon which it was founded. It has and can survive economic hard times and though it’s a melting pot of people, they all love this town. It makes me proud to know and meet transplants and retirees from many places. They all chose Huntsville as their home. I love that even though it has grown into a large city it has not lost its small-town charm.
EVENT: Hobbies? HT: I began collecting coins and stamps when I was a young boy. I presently collect historical photos and documents especially related to Huntsville which I share with the social media groups Huntsville Rewound and Huntsville Revisited. I also enjoy researching my family genealogy.
EVENT: Interests? HT: My interests include historical research, with a keen interest in the revitalization of downtown Huntsville, the preservation of Huntsville’s heritage and seeing Huntsville continue and improve as one of the most wonderful places to live. I also have an interest in our youth – in working with them and instilling in them not only values, but also that Huntsville has an interesting past and they must continue its legacy. I also enjoy college football and the SEC, and meeting new friends. n

Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guild Celebrates its 53rd Debutante Ball

The Huntsville Symphony Orchestra Guild presented 35 young women on October 29, in the Von Braun Center North Hall. Over 920 patrons, guests, friends and family attended the formal presentation and enjoyed “An Evening to Remember.” This year’s Ball was chaired by Linda Akenhead.
The venue was transformed into a colorful vision of shades of lavenders, purples, and greens. Table centerpieces were composed of pink lilies, purple stock, eggplant calla lilies, hydrangeas, and roses. Debutantes carried bouquets of the debutante rose, “Queen of the Night,” designed by Carl Casiday of Lola’s in Sheffield.
Guests enjoyed a formal dinner including sliced pear salad; chili rubbed filet of beef; stuffed chicken breast, Gouda with Béchamel Sauce; Dauphinoise potatoes; roasted vegetables; and red velvet cheesecake.

The Symphony Guild sponsors the debutante program annually as a fundraiser for the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra. Young women invited to debut at the Symphony Ball are college sophomores with a history of community involvement. Over $2.8 million from all the past balls has benefited the Symphony Orchestra. n

The Cosmopolitan Club celebrated their semiannual Focus on Fashion show on Tuesday, October 11 at the Valley Hill Country Club. 150 guests attended the event that served to benefit the Huntsville Assistance Program, which is an interdenominational Christian network of Madison County congregations providing help to those in need. n

EarlyWorks Society Hosted Supper with Santa
The EarlyWorks Society hosted their annual Supper with Santa event on November 28 through December 1, 2016 at the EarlyWorks Children’s Museum Grand Hall.
Supper with Santa is a Huntsville family tradition where 1200 parents and children dined with Santa, Mrs. Claus and Santa’s elves over the four evenings. Santa visited each table and talked to each child which provided many photo opportunities. The Grand Hall was transformed by the Society into a magical wonderland decked with holiday cheer. Proceeds from Supper with Santa benefit children’s education programs at the EarlyWorks Family of Museums. n

The Annual Voices of Our Times Series at the Huntsville Museum of Art welcomed iconic journalist, Carl Bernstein for a talk on Thursday, November 3, 2016. The event featured a book signing following the talk.
At the podium, Bernstein addressed the increasing dysfunction of American’s governmental institutions and its devolving political-media culture.
The author of five best-selling books, Bernstein’s work includes “All the President’s Men” and “A Woman-In-Charge: The Life of Hillary Clinton.” He is currently at work on several multi-media projects, including a dramatic TV series and a feature film with Steven Soderbergh.
Christopher Madkour, executive director for the HMA, brought the discussion series to Huntsville in 2012. He first introduced the series at the Southern Vermont Arts Center, where he formerly served as executive director. n

The Huntsville Library Foundation commemorated its 30th Annual Vive le Livre (long live the book) gala on November 16, 2016 at the Jackson Center. Guest of honor and keynote speaker was Erik Larson, who specializes in adrenaline-fueled historical narratives.
“This year marks an amazing milestone in the history of the Huntsville Library Foundation,” said Foundation Chair Christina Tabereaux. “We have raised over $1.4 million dollars over the last 30 years to support programs and initiatives at Huntsville-Madison County Public Library, and we are excited to celebrate this achievement by bringing an amazing author like Mr. Larson to our amazing community of library supporters.”
The Foundation believes that a great library helps make a great community. Huntsville-Madison County Public Library is a nonprofit 12-branch system that serves all of Madison County.
