TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS ORIENTAL MUSEUM 29 Sep 2017 - 28 Jan 2018 Resilience within the Rubble: reconstructing the Kasthamandap and its past after the 2015 Nepal Earthquake Drawing on the research of a team of Durham University archaeologists who worked in the Kathmandu Valley in the wake of the devastating 2015 earthquake, this photographic exhibition tells the story of the Kasthamandap from its origins to its collapse and its post-earthquake renewal.

PALACE GREEN LIBRARY 14 Oct 2017 - 25 Feb 2018 Between Worlds: Folklore and Fairy Tales from Northern Britain Close your eyes and picture a fairy. You might see a pretty little thing with wings, eager to make all your wishes come true. This is the version of fairies that we know today, but there also exists a much older, very different idea of a fairy, that might not look and act how you expect.

This new temporary exhibition takes its inspiration from medieval romance, ballads, and collections of folklore compiled between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, which tell of encounters with otherworldly creatures and journeys into mysterious worlds. It presents a forgotten type of fairy tale, very different to those that we are familiar with in today’s popular culture.

with the University of Leeds White Rose College of the Arts and Humanities, this exhibition celebrates the diplomat Malcolm MacDonald’s friendships with world leaders, master craftsmen, antique dealers and even Borneo headhunters.

PALACE GREEN LIBRARY, MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY 5 Nov 2017 - 3 June 2018 Living on the Hills Gallery Everyone’s History – 20 years of the Portable Antiquities Scheme in the North East Celebrate 20 years of the Treasure Act and the work of the Portable Antiquities Scheme with the Museum of Archaeology. Take a closer look at objects of treasure acquired by the Museum of Archaeology through the Treasure Act, alongside objects discovered by local finders and detectorists.

PALACE GREEN LIBRARY Opens 18 November 2017 Hell, Heaven and Hope: A journey through life and the afterlife with Dante Look around you and the influence of medieval poet Dante Alighieri is everywhere.

For centuries, his work has inspired artists and writers from Botticelli to Dan Brown.

This new temporary exhibition follows the story of Dante’s The Divine Comedy. Join his imagined journey through Hell, Purgatory and Heaven, meeting a cast of familiar and unfamiliar characters.

Reflecting the entire human experience; his work considers the power of resilience through difficult times and ultimately a message of hope.

The exhibition is brought to life through Durham University’s collections, displayed alongside books and manuscripts from the internationally-renowned collections of Mr Livio Ambrogio, on show in Durham for the first time.

DURHAM WORLD HERITAGE SITE

Today, Dante’s influence can be found in contemporary art, literature, music, film and popular culture. His striking depictions of the consequences of sin in Inferno, the struggles of Purgatory and ultimately the splendours of Heaven reflect our own stories; the choices we make, the consequences of our decisions, our behaviour and our resilience.

Look closely enough and you may even find yourself.

ORIENTAL MUSEUM 19 Jan - 3 June 2018 Khyal: Music and Imagination Led by Durham University’s Music Department, this multimedia exhibition brings together visual artists and musicians to explore diverse visual responses to Indian classical music.

WORLD HERITAGE SITE VISITOR CENTRE

DURHAM CASTLE GUIDED TOURS

The World Heritage Site Visitor Centre, on Owengate, Palace Green, enhances the experience of visitors to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Durham Cathedral and Castle. The Visitor Centre provides visitors with an overview of what a World Heritage Site is, what makes Durham significant, and what there is to see and do on the peninsula.

Durham Castle is a unique building with over 900 years of history. Today it is a Grade I Listed Building, an Accredited Museum, part of the World Heritage Site and home to University College, the founding college of Durham University. Enjoy a tour round this unique building and discover some of the history that has put Durham on the map.

The Visitor Centre also provides a central point of information about places to visit on the World Heritage Site including the Castle and the Cathedral with its Claustral Buildings housing the Treasures of St Cuthbert. The Centre also complements the work of Durham University Palace Green Library on the opposite side of the green.
