Little Bookworms is a group for children under 5, their parents and carers. Come along every Monday morning 10.30am11.30am for fantastic stories, crafts, messy play, singing, games and much more.

Little Dragons’ Club is the Oriental Museum’s group for under 5s, their parents and carers.

Come along every Wednesday between 10am-11am for fun crafts, messy play, object handling, stories and role playing.

Durham Archaeology Explorers Oriental Museum Children aged 7 - 11 years are invited to join Durham University Museums’ Archaeology Club. The group meets on the first Saturday of the month from 2pm-4pm at the Oriental Museum.

Through exciting hands-on experiments and activities, the club investigates all aspects of archaeology and explores Durham’s own archaeological secrets. £1 per child (parents/carers free). No booking necessary, just drop in. For further information please contact +44 (0)191 334 5694.

ORIENTAL MUSEUM 10 - 15 Nov 2015 On the Threshold An installation at the Oriental Museum and Teikyo University’s Lafcadio Hearn Cultural Centre of work by Londonbased Japanese artists, timed to coincide with the Lumiere Festival.

ORIENTAL MUSEUM 29 Jan – 26 May 2016 On the Threshold Following on from November’s installation, this larger exhibition focuses on the work of two Japanese artists both living and working in London.

Miyoko Yamashita and Satoshi Nakajima will exhibit a range of works of contemporary art which

juxtapose traditional Japanese aesthetics and Western experiences.

ORIENTAL MUSEUM Ancient Egyptian Art The Thacker Gallery of Ancient Egyptian Art at the Oriental Museum will reopen to the public from Friday 26th February 2016 providing greatly enhanced conditions for the treasures of our Ancient Egyptian collection.

MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY 28 July 2015 - 28 Nov 2015 Durham Archaeology Explorers This exhibition explores the work of the Durham Archaeology Explorers who engage with children aged 7-11 years to inspire a lifelong interest in, and respect for, archaeology and the people of the past. The group designed and curated all aspects of the exhibition from choosing objects to writing text labels and designing worksheets.

DURHAM CASTLE GUIDED TOURS

The World Heritage Site Visitor Centre, on Owengate, Palace Green, enhances the experience of visitors to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Durham Cathedral and Castle. The Visitor Centre provides visitors with an overview of what a World Heritage Site is, what makes Durham significant, and what there is to see and do on the peninsula.

Durham Castle is a unique building with over 900 years of history. Today it is a Grade I Listed Building, an Accredited Museum, part of the World Heritage Site and home to University College, the founding college of Durham University. Enjoy a tour round this unique building and discover some of the history that has put Durham on the map.

The Visitor Centre also provides a central point of information about places to visit on the World Heritage Site including the Castle and the Cathedral with its Claustral Buildings housing the Treasures of St Cuthbert. The Centre also complements the work of Durham University Palace Green Library on the opposite side of the green.

Tours during University Terms Tours are normally available every afternoon of the week at 1.15pm, 2.15pm, 3.15pm and 4.15pm

Like the rest of the World Heritage Site, the Visitor Centre provides interactive experiences for visitors including exhibitions, performances and hands-on family activities.
