Little Bookworms is a group for children under 5, their parents and carers. Come along every Monday morning 10.30am11.30am for fantastic stories, crafts, messy play, singing, games and much more.

Little Dragons is the Oriental Museum’s group for under 5s, their parents and carers. Come along every Wednesday between 10am-11am for fun crafts, messy play, object handling, stories and role playing.

£1 per child (parents/carers free).

Durham Archaeology Explorers Oriental Museum Children aged 7 - 11 years are invited to join Durham University Museums’ Archaeology Club. The group meets on the first Saturday of the month from 2pm-4pm at the Oriental Museum.

Through exciting hands-on experiments and activities, the club investigates all aspects of archaeology and explores Durham’s own archaeological secrets.

Charges apply. Spaces are limited, so booking is required. For further information please call +44 (0)191 334 5694.

DURHAM ORCHID SHOW

The Durham Orchid Show will be held at Josephine Butler College, next to Durham University Botanic Garden. There will be displays from Orchid Societies and the chance to buy orchids from a variety of specialist growers. As usual, visitors are welcome to bring any of their own plants along to the show if they would like advice about them. There will also be cultural talks by guest speakers and plenty of opportunity to ask for guidance. Organised by Darlington and District Orchid Society and with the support of Durham University, the show is a very popular and enjoyable event.

Somme 1916: From Durham to the Western Front Somme 1916: From Durham to the Western Front tells the stories of the people from County Durham caught up in the battle: the men who fought and died on the battlefield; the women who nursed the wounded and comforted the dying; and the workers who toiled in factories, mines and shipyards across the county to support the war effort.

Munitionettes & Miners: County Durham Heroes of the Great War Munitionettes & Miners uncovers the important roles of County Durham men and women during World War I. Discover more about local women who worked in munitions factories and County Durham miners who fought tunnel warfare on the Western Front.

New Ancient Egypt Gallery The Oriental Museum is home to the largest and most important Ancient Egyptian collection in the North East.

The Thacker Gallery of Ancient Egypt will reopen after a major refurbishment displaying the highlights from this amazing collection.

The latest archaeological findings from the Trypillia megasites of Ukraine are brought to the Museum of Archaeology by the Durham – Kyiv – Kirovograd Project. This International Travelling Exhibition explores the culture of the Trypillia people and evidence of early urbanism.

On the Threshold II: Formal Presence This exhibition of works by Japanese artists all currently living in London aims to present the meaning of our existence in a postinternet society and the lived experience of different cultures through the mediums of painting and photography while exploring the use of colour.

ORIENTAL MUSEUM 18 June – 25 Sept 2016 Ancient Lebanon The inhabitants of ancient Lebanon played a fundamental role in shaping the history of the Mediterranean and yet, despite their importance in antiquity, they have largely remained an enigma outside of academic circles. This major new exhibition seeks to address this by presenting the latest research and archaeological discoveries from this important region.

DURHAM CASTLE GUIDED TOURS

The World Heritage Site Visitor Centre, on Owengate, Palace Green, enhances the experience of visitors to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Durham Cathedral and Castle. The Visitor Centre provides visitors with an overview of what a World Heritage Site is, what makes Durham significant, and what there is to see and do on the peninsula.

Durham Castle is a unique building with over 900 years of history. Today, it is a Grade I Listed Building, an Accredited Museum, part of the World Heritage Site and home to University College the founding college of Durham University. Enjoy a tour round this unique building and discover some of the history that has put Durham on the map.

The Visitor Centre also provides a central point of information about places to visit on the World Heritage Site including the Castle and the Cathedral with its Claustral Buildings housing the Treasures of St Cuthbert. The Centre also complements the work of Durham University Palace Green Library on the opposite side of the green.

Tours during University Terms Tours are normally available every afternoon of the week at 1.15pm, 2.15pm, 3.15pm and 4.15pm.

Like the rest of the World Heritage Site, the Visitor Centre provides interactive experiences for visitors including exhibitions, performances and hands-on family activities.

We have visits from Neil Molloy of Swallow Heritage, demonstrating the stonemason’s art and drop-in days with the Durham Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers scheduled throughout the summer.
