A natural lakeside setting and peaceful surroundings in one of the country’s most spectacular and historic cities combine to make Van Mildert College an ideal venue for any event. Whether you are holding a residential conference, course or celebration, the facilities and service at Van Mildert, along with its tranquil surroundings and many attractions, will ensure your event is a memorable experience.

The College has its own lake, a popular hunting-ground for herons and kingfishers, and overlooks wooded parkland which still retains its medieval ridge-andfurrow pattern. Just a stone’s throw from the historic pilgrim-way, Van Mildert College upholds the ancient tradition of welcoming visitors and providing hospitality for which King Canute commissioned the community at Durham, as “haliwerfolc”, in 1028.

Van Mildert has a wealth of facilities to suit any event. Our experienced and friendly staff will ensure that the service is designed to meet your particular requirements.

Named after the last of Durham’s mighty Prince Bishops, the College is only a short walk from the historic centre of Durham with its spectacular, world-famous Cathedral. Not only is this inspiring Norman structure part of a World Heritage Site along with Durham Castle but it also has the accolade of being voted as the nation’s favourite building.

Guests can stroll round the lake or cross the road to experience the delights of the Botanic Garden, with its collection of exotic plants, or the Oriental Museum, which houses the finest oriental collection in England outside London. Golf enthusiasts will be unable to resist the Mount Oswald Golf Course which the College overlooks. Many more attractions are only a day trip away, from the historic pleasures of Lindisfarne Priory and Hadrian’s Wall to the vibrant nightlife of the City of Newcastle.

The success of any event depends on the food and drink. Our experienced catering team can cater for any occasion, from a buffet lunch between meetings to an elegant banquet for several hundred guests. For very special occasions, a drinks reception can also be arranged in the spectacular setting of the Oriental Museum (by permission of the Curator).

The College has an extensive range of modern accommodation including 125 en-suite rooms, which are located in self-contained buildings in spacious grounds.

Dining facilities include an impressive hall, with a capacity for 400 people and the Lakeside Room with inspiring views across the illuminated lake, which is perfect for intimate functions for up to 40. In addition, guests can take advantage of the fine wine cellar and well-stocked bar which is ideal for drinks receptions. There are also parking facilities available adjacent to the College.

Day conference facilities are available in dedicated meeting rooms throughout the year, including the Ustinov Room which has a theatre licence. There is a full range of audio-visual equipment including network connection and data projection.

The ideal venue for a range of events such as away-days, training courses, and presentations.
