Little Bookworms is a group for children under 5, their parents and carers. Come along every Monday morning 10.30am11.30am for fantastic stories, crafts, messy play, singing, games and much more.

Little Dragons is the Oriental Museum’s group for under 5s, their parents and carers. Come along every Wednesday between 10am-11am for fun crafts, messy play, object exploration, stories and role playing.

ANNUAL EASTER CHICK HUNT Easter Chicks are hiding in the Garden. Pick up your spotter sheet and see how many you can find in this fun family event. We recommend visitors use the entrance at Howlands Park & Ride. This is a self-led activity.

TRUNKS & TUSKS Spot some elephant objects in the galleries and make your own elephant mask.

The gardens are beginning to come to life after the winter. Join storyteller, Elizabeth Baker, to hear some stories and legends about the natural world (we might even hear a few Durham legends) then enjoy some nature inspired craft.

Children aged 7-11 years are invited to join Durham University Museums’ Archaeology Club. The group meets on the first Saturday of the month from 2pm-4pm at the Oriental Museum. Through exciting hands-on experiments and activities, the club investigates all aspects of archaeology and explores Durham’s own archaeological secrets. Charges apply. Silversmith Les Howe and his wife Vivienne, an artist and card designer, will demonstrate their craft skills in the Garden. Les takes much of his inspiration from the History of Durham, in particular St Cuthbert and the Lindisfarne Gospels. Viv works with traditional paper crafts such as embossing, quilling, parchment work and many more techniques.

MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY, PALACE GREEN LIBRARY Living on the Hills Gallery Running until Mon 28 May 2018 Everyone’s History – 20 years of the Portable Antiquities Scheme in the North East This exhibition celebrates 20 years of the Portable Antiquities Scheme and the Treasure Act and also the archaeology that is discovered every day by the public. 20 years ago a unique programme began, its aim was to record archaeological artefacts found by the general public. Today over a million objects have been recorded and many important objects and sites discovered. This exhibition features objects that have been found by the public. It also highlights some of the objects that have been acquired through the Treasure Act, including, for the first time, part of a Bronze Age hoard found in County Durham.

ORIENTAL MUSEUM Khyal: Music and Imagination Fri 19 Jan to Sun 3 June 2018 Led by Durham University’s Music Department, this multimedia exhibition brings together visual artists and musicians to explore diverse visual responses to Indian classical music.

Every city has is secrets and Durham is no exception. In November 2013, two mass burials were discovered in an area being developed as a new café for Palace Green Library. After over 350 years, a team of archaeologists from Durham University were able to confirm that the burials were some of a group of Scottish Prisoners who died in 1650 following the Battle of Dunbar. This exhibition explains how different pieces of a complex jigsaw of evidence were pieced together to establish the identity of the bodies, the science behind the discoveries, and the remarkable story of the survivors, some of whom were transported to New England, to a new life at the edge of the known world.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the political revolution which brought the rule of the Shoguns to an end in Japan. It began a period of major political, economic and social change in Japan. This exhibition explores these events and their impact.

Our knowledgeable guides and volunteers will be around Durham Castle to answer your questions and share some of the stories and hidden histories of the castle. Please note that there may be queues, as there is a limit on the number of people that can be in Durham Castle at one time. There is no need to book.

DURHAM CASTLE GUIDED TOURS

The World Heritage Site Visitor Centre, on Owengate, Palace Green, enhances the experience of visitors to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Durham Cathedral and Castle. The Visitor Centre provides visitors with an overview of what a World Heritage Site is, what makes Durham significant, and what there is to see and do on the peninsula.

Durham Castle is a unique building with over 1,000 years of history. Today it is a Grade I Listed Building, an Accredited Museum, part of the World Heritage Site and home to University College, the founding college of Durham University. Enjoy a tour around this unique building and discover some of the history that has put Durham on the map.

The Visitor Centre also provides a central point of information about places to visit on the World Heritage Site including the Castle and the Cathedral, with its Claustral Buildings, housing the Treasures of St Cuthbert. The Centre also complements the work of Durham University Palace Green Library on the opposite side of the green.

Like the rest of the World Heritage Site, the Visitor Centre provides interactive experiences for visitors including exhibitions, performances and hands-on family activities. We have visits from Neil Molloy of Swallow Heritage, demonstrating the stonemason’s art and drop-in days with the Durham Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers scheduled throughout the summer.
