Proposal to Host ICSM Conference
in Durham September 2019
The UK scientific organisation and support of ICSM2019 would be provided through the three-university partnership of the Soft Matter and Functional Interface Centre for Doctoral training (SOFI-CDT). Funded by EPSRC, this consortium of soft matter and Interface scientists from Durham, Leeds and Edinburgh universities, and over 20 industrial companies runs 4-year PhD programmes co-funded by industry and spanning chemistry, physics, engineering and food science as disciplines and from experiment to theory and modelling in methodology. By 2019 there will be a combined cohort of between 60 and 80 PhD students funded through SOFI. The SOFI CDT also organises an annual UK meeting for universities and industry, the ‘UK Soft Matter Showcase’ and an industrial horizon-scanning workshop, together with other relevant Centres for Doctoral Training. These would be subsumed into ICSM in 2019. Calman Learning Centre
The Calman Learning Centre opened in 2007 and offers our largest and most up-to-date facilities. The Arnold Wolfendale Suite is a tiered lecture theatre for up to 400. Rosemary Cramp and Ken Wade Suites are both tiered lecture theatres for up to 260. These three rooms can be video-linked for large conferences for up to 920 delegates. Inbound Transport to Durham
Durham's location in the heart of the North East means great cities and stunning countryside are only a short distance away. Excellent accessibility from across the UK, Europe and beyond. By Rail 60 InterCity trains from most major centres in the country call at Durham daily including 16 trains from London. The National Express high speed service takes under 3 hours from London King's Cross on the main East Coast line. First Transpennine Express offers frequent links to Manchester, Sheffield and Leeds, while Cross Country links Durham directly with Scotland, the Midlands, and the South West. Journey times to major cities: London 3 hours, Birmingham 3 hours, Edinburgh 1 hour 30 minutes, York 1 hour. By Road Durham city centre is only two miles from the A1(M). Leave the motorway at Junction 62 on the A690 Durham - Sunderland road and follow signs to Durham City Centre. There are several express coach services daily from most major cities. Durham is well served by both regional express services and the local bus network. From the city bus station - a short walk from the railway station - a bus service runs every 15 minutes past the Colleges on South Road. By Air Newcastle International Airport is one of the UK’s fastest growing regional airports. There are direct flights to around 16 domestic destinations including London Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Bristol, Aberdeen, Belfast and Cardiff. Durham Tees Valley Airport also has direct flights. Both airports are less than 40 minutes drive from the City, By Sea Ferry services operate between North Shields and Ijmuiden (Amsterdam) throughout the year.

Local Transport. Compact, clean and accessible, it couldn't be easier to get around Durham Durham City Park and Ride Durham City is served by three Park and Ride sites on the key routes into the city. These are situated at Belmont, Sniperley and Howlands. A direct bus service runs every 10 minutes to the city centre from each site. The sites offer free parking for users of the Park and Ride bus service and unlimited daily travel into the city centre and back for just ÂŁ2.00 per person. Park and Ride users can also use the Cathedral Bus for free. Collingwood College
The College was founded in 1972 as the first purpose-built mixed College in Durham University and named in the memory of Sir Edward Foyle Collingwood, a mathematician and scientist. Originally designed for 260 students, the College now has a broad mix of 1,100 undergraduates and postgraduates from around the world. Collingwood College is one of the most modern of all Durham University’s colleges and offers all
the essential amenities for any event, from international conferences for hundreds of delegates to group trips exploring the riches of the area. Grey College
Grey College was founded in 1959 in response to a Government report at that time which expressed concern about the shortage of scientists and engineers being trained in the UK. The College motto is ‘Gradibus Ascendimus’ - Ascending by Degrees. This is a pun and refers to the ladder displayed on the College’s coat of arms. The ladder itself is a medieval siege ladder, known as Gre, which is also a pun on the family name honoured in the College’s title. The implication of the motto is that, by hard work and diligence, a member of Grey College can rise within society to wherever they wish, taking one step at a time. Durham Castle
Durham Castle was handed to the University in 1836 and became University College in 1837, the oldest of the Durham Colleges. It is part of the Durham World Heritage Site and a Grade 1 listed building. The Castle was previously the residence of the Bishops of Durham and as such played a significant role in the history of the UK. The present Castle began in 1072 as a simple defensive mound commissioned by William the Conquerer. Over the centuries the Castle has been extended with the Great Hall being added in 1284. The Great Hall is now a popular venue for conference dinners and private dining events. Hatfield College
Founded in 1846, Hatfield College is the second oldest College in Durham University. It is located between the World Heritage and the banks of the River Wear, on one of the oldest streets in Durham. Hatfield has a very interesting history and it continues to grow and change, building on its heritage and traditions to meet the challenges of the 21st Century. Hatfield is an intimate and self-contained collection of eighteenth-century buildings. The wonderful character of the College is greatly enhanced by its view of historic Durham Cathedral. Van Mildert College
The College is named after William Van Mildert (1765-1836), the last Prince Bishop of Durham. An Englishman of Dutch descent, he was instrumental in the founding of Durham University in 1832 and his castle is the present University College. His portrait hangs in Van Mildert dining hall. Centred around a lake in spacious, leafy grounds, Van Mildert offers a beautiful setting, a range of great facilities and helpful support staff. Earth Sciences
The Earth Science Rooms are in the building next to the Calman Learning Centre, and often used in conjunction with each other. This offers large space for catering and poster sessions or exhibitions. There are 4 rooms in total. ES228 and ES229 can be used as separate rooms, or the divide can be opened to provide a larger space. ES230 and ES231 are similar, in that they can be used as separate rooms or one large area. The Science Site is a pedestrianised area but access is available for loading.
