TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS ORIENTAL MUSEUM 21 Sept 2018 - 21 Dec 2018 Scaling the Heights: Miniature Mountaineering An exhibition, by Stephen Livingstone and Abbie Garrington, which explores the rich heritage of mountaineering literature, by recreating historic Himalayan expeditions in miniature. A pair of vintage Action Man figures climb the towering shelves of important mountaineering libraries and archives, scaling the heights of human knowledge, endeavour and endurance. With specially commissioned suminagashi marbling by Kate Livingstone.

PALACE GREEN LIBRARY 24 Nov 2018 - 17 Mar 2019 Catch Your Breath Palace Green Library’s free exhibition will discover new ways of thinking about breath and breathlessness and their relationship to illness and wellbeing. It will bring together medical history, philosophy, art, literature and music to show how breathing is more than just a bodily function; it affects our experience of life. Alongside the exhibition will be a varied programme of activities and events for all ages. Catch Your Breath’s opening weekend (Sat 24 & Sun 25 Nov) will be full

of family activities, so check Palace Green Library’s website for more information: www.durham.ac.uk/palace.green

ORIENTAL MUSEUM Jan 2019 - May 2019 Art Studio: Ancient Egypt The Art Studio is a Sunderlandbased mental health charity that provides support to improve the lives of members through art. Members of the Art Studio have taken part in a series of workshops at the Oriental Museum focused on the Museum’s collections. During these visits, members discovered and learnt about the Ancient Egyptian collections at the Museum and created art inspired by these visits and the Museum artefacts. The art displayed reflects the varied interests of group members. The exhibition includes work in a variety of media and styles.

ORIENTAL MUSEUM Jan 2019 - May 2019 Cham Centuries The Cham are a diverse group of seafaring Muslim and Hindu communities from Southeast Asia. Historically, Cham territory included several kingdoms in what is today Central and Southern Vietnam. This Cham ‘federation’ disintegrated following decisive Vietnamese defeats in the fifteenth and early nineteenth centuries, prompting some Cham to take refuge on Hainan island in the South China Sea. Others took waterborne flight to the Mekong Delta spanning Cambodia and Vietnam. In the 1970s, Cham were among the many persecuted groups during Cambodia’s murderous Khmer Rouge regime. Thousands fled as refugees to Malaysia and as far as the United States, France, Australia and Canada. These varied and repeated experiences of forced displacement have created communities that share common heritage but now live very different lives. This exhibition by photographer James Seabright, builds on research into these diverse communities undertaken by researchers from SGIA, at Durham University.
