T Dear Reader,

ime and again, spectacular works of art fetch record prices. A recent example of this is the painting “Salvator Mundi” by Leonardo da Vinci that was sold at auction for $ 450 million. Particularly in the art world, it is primarily factors like the significance of a work of art, or artist, that determine their appeal and influence the value of such objects. Similar principles apply to exceptional pieces of real estate, which not infrequently change owners for collector’s prices. I am proud of the fact that our portfolio comprises very special,

art-related properties. Some of these exhibit artistic elements, others are themselves works of art thanks to their architectural style.

An example of this is the Haus Zuckerkandl villa in Jena that was designed and built by Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius in 1928. It is not only the building itself, which has been preserved, but also some of its original fittings and furniture. Another special piece of real estate is the 14th century Het Steen chateau in Belgium. Among its owners was the famous painter Peter Paul Rubens, who refurbished the estate in the Flemish renaissance style and immortalized the chateau in several of his paintings. In Tyrol, on the other hand, there is a medieval castle for sale whose ceiling frescoes were painted by Baroque-era artist Stephan Kessler.

Preeminent architects also create buildings of major importance today. Some of these masterpieces stand out because they feature an interplay of light and geometric shapes. Richard ­Meier is regarded as the ultimate light expert. His architectural style is characterized by combining the color white and wide window frontages to create brightness and transparency. Among his most important works are the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.

I am particularly delighted that we have been able to sign up Richard Meier as an architect for a new building project that we are currently developing in Hamburg’s HafenCity, which will comprise, among other things, our new Engel & Völkers corporate headquarters as well as a 15-floor residential tower with exclusive condominiums. Design: Joachim Manz Born in 1957 Joachim Manz, studied philosophy and not art. In the 80s he trained with a stone sculptor. He has been working as a sculptor since 1987 – one of a very few who work with fine concrete. He is known for his sculptures and murals in public spaces.

Art Expertise at your Fingertips Magnus Resch wants to revolutionize the art market with his Magnus app: Take a picture and receive instant information about an artist, a work of art, its current market value.

The app is like Shazam for art. Who hasn’t stood in front of a work of art and wanted to know who the artist was? With my app you now get all the info: the name of the artist, the title of the work and even the price – all at no cost, because the app is free. On top of that, it can tell you the locations of galleries and museums, including their opening times and current exhibitions.

It’s like a Google Maps for the art world. Very useful for going to look at art or getting ready for a date.

How do you accumulate all the data on paintings, artists and

It’s a huge amount of work supported by crowdsourcing. Before launching the app, a team of 40 people spent three years gathering information on artworks and artists.

Everything that could not be added automatically had to be entered manually. Today, the majority of the images are added by users themselves. Everyone who uses the app to take a photo of a work of art adds to the database.

How much data is the app currently able to access? We are the world’s biggest platform for contemporary art and our database contains approximately ten million images. The app works in roughly 20,000 galleries worldwide, as well as in museums and at trade fairs.

Do you have any advice for collectors? Art is a bad investment unless you purchase artworks for over a million dollars or more specifically as an investment. Otherwise you have to be incredibly lucky for it to pay off. But even then, it’s probably a better idea to play the lottery. That’s why I advise my friends to buy only art they like and to be aware that they will never make any money off it.

Austria’s best known living artist Erwin Wurm has reinterpreted the art of sculpture with his viewer participation pieces. Last year, he represented his home country at the Biennale in Venice. Wurm is a master of the bizarre and paradoxical who comments on our age and affluent societies with a mischievous wink. He celebrated his breakthrough in 1997 with the One Minute Sculptures.

Since then, Wurm’s wacky works of art have been on show at many hundreds of exhibitions worldwide.

workers with asparagus sprouting from their noses, museum visitors in unfortunate predicatments, turned into sculptures… Erwin Wurm is a sculptor with a keen eye.

Nothing and no one is safe from his subtle sense of humor. His works of art are created on an estate close to Vienna, where Wurm and his family live in an old house that he renovated with great care. Next door are the high-ceilinged buildings in which he works, supported by half a dozen craftspeople. The five hectares of land belonging to the estate provide enough space for a large number of Wurm’s sculptures, fruit trees and grazing sheep.

Mr. Wurm, how do you come up with ideas? When you’ve been doing this for several years, you know how it works, how to conjure up ideas. I am trying to get close to reality by using concepts like the absurd and the paradoxical. Seen from these perspectives, you quickly realize how crazy our world is. That’s why I don’t have to get myself into an altered state, get drunk, take drugs or meditate.

Instead, when I focus and think about how to develop the work, I experience something like brainstorming. I keep working on the issue, and at some point the ideas come to me. Or not … (laughs) The more you work, the more inspired you’ll get. Most of the materials I use I find right at hand: sausages, pickled gherkins.

process of losing our last certainties. The enlightenment, one of Europe’s greatest achievements, is getting more and more blurry, due to resurgent patriarchal structures. These are all topics for discussion. I ask questions of society. And I create works of art that ask questions, that assert themselves in this crazy world and that themselves are, to some extent, crazy.

Is it your intention to be provocative? No, what interests me are strong images. I believe in creating things that are memorable. For a recent exhibition, I designed word sculptures for which I invited people to climb on a pedestal and to say one or more sentences, for instance: “A football-sized lump of clay on a light-blue car roof.” You hear the sentence, visualize it, and that’s the sculpture. I like that. I plant an image in people’s minds as though it was a surgical procedure. Only just spoken and immediately it’s in your head. I always try to differentiate myself from artists who use pathos. Pathos makes people feel small, because it is intimidating. Instead, I believe in the marginal, the incidental, the ridiculous and things that make you feel desperate. In the end, what defines our existence is our relationship to humanity as a whole and to history. Compared to them, we are tiny. This discrepancy is something we have to live with.

That’s what I am interested in – not the most recent nonsense spouted by Donald Trump or Angela Merkel, for that matter. I don’t want to comment on that. I am interested in absurdist theater, that’s why my work is created this way.

Humor is only a part of that which is paradoxical. Humor is also about liberation.

Is humor helpful in a crisis? When your back is up against the wall, laughter won’t get you very far. But if nothing else, being conscious of the fact that everything is relative is helpful.

BJ Topol, who grew up in Lake Tahoe, is the absolute go-to art advisor for major collectors and has inspired new designs from the likes of Phillip Lim and Derek Lam. In ”Sex and the City,” Candace Bushnell modeled the role of Charlotte on the knowledgeable art historian, and as a little girl, Topol appeared in the The Godfather as Al Pacino’s little daughter. She lives with her family in a loft full of art in the Flatiron District in Manhattan.

Where does your interest in art come from? Having the direction to major in art history in college, your interest must have started at a

There are key moments in your life that change the trajectory, really lightning bolt moments. My grandmother was from the Deep South, and her family came over on the Mayflower. She collected antiques. That was where I first got this idea of beauty, and history and tradition. I learned that early on from her. Because in Lake Tahoe, California, where I grew up, there are no museums, there’s no culture.

It’s all about the outdoors, it’s all about hiking, it’s all about the natural beauty. But my first light bulb was when I went to visit my great aunt in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. She was a docent at the Philadelphia Art Museum and she was a very cultured woman. There was a whole Marcel Duchamp wing at the Philadelphia Art Museum, which blew my mind. It opened me up and that was ­really when this passion started. She and her husband took us to the Barnes Museum.

And why this wood had aged and the patina was making it more valuable. My business partner and I call it eye mileage. We always encourage clients to look and look because the more you see, you develop this understanding for what’s good, what’s great. But yes, I’ve been doing this for 27 years.

How long was the Sotheby’s program? At the time it was a ninemonth graduate program. I ended up getting a job at a gallery right after, and I worked there for 10 years. I was very lucky. It was a small gallery and at the time there still were masterpieces available in the 19th and early 20th century painting world. We handled so many of them and worked with museums and private collectors.

How did your role change during those years at the gallery?

I started at the front desk. I would go in early and I’d stay late and I’d read catalogues. I would tip-toe to my boss’s office and listen to conversations with clients – I just poured myself into it. There was a moment where I had gotten an offer from Christie’s, so I went into my boss’s office to talk about it. He said, “I know that you’re ambitious, but one, you’re a woman, and two, you’re not quite manipulative enough to make it in the art world.” Hearing that was the biggest challenge I could have been given. I thought, I’m a woman but I can do it better, and I can also do it my own way. I don’t have to be manipulative.

I can develop my own relationships with my clients based on integrity, trust, knowledge and all of those things. So it gave me that push.

From Düsseldorf to the Museums of the World

Anselm Kiefer, Andreas Gursky and Gerhard Richter all have something in common: They studied at Düsseldorf’s renowned Kunstakademie art school. While prominent figures from the international scene – from Marina Abramović to Andy Warhol – were primarily responsible for pulling the crowds, it was mostly young artists from the city itself who, with the two-month exhibition of their paintings, sculptures, photographs and installations, made it abundantly clear that it wouldn’t be long before the whole world knew their names. That’s exactly what happened.

To this day, the exhibitors number among the great names of contemporary art and their works are among the highlights of some of the world’s major collections and museums. They fetch top prices in galleries and auction houses from New York to Shanghai: Gerhard Richter and Markus Lüpertz, Katharina Sieverding and Jörg Immendorff. And while a trade show hall might be a rather dreary venue, the exhibition’s title announced a new departure across the broadest of fronts: “Von hier aus” – “From Here.”

But why Düsseldorf? Firstly, because, in the early 19th century, the loss of what was once the Elector Palatine’s collection amid the turmoil of the Napoleonic Wars had inflicted a wound that never fully healed. For many of the old masters the odyssey ended in Munich, where they now constitute a pillar of the world-famous Pinakothek museums. But this painful experience taught the city on the Rhine an important lesson: Art is identity. And that realization continues to make itself felt, even today.

Secondly, because Düsseldorf was a booming commercial hub and its prosperity was expected to be a good breeding ground for arousing curiosity and keeping it alive. A Symphony of Color Beatriz Milhazes’ huge, highly decorative paintings have brought her international fame. Art book publisher Taschen celebrates the Brazilian artist’s work in its stores – and has now also launched two limited editions of a new, outsized monograph. For Milhazes, painting is “a perpetual challenge.” Her stylistic mix of foreign and Brazilian motifs, shapes and colors is unique.

You developed your own collage technique, right? Yes. It was all about combining two- and three-dimensionality. I started on the collages in 1989. On the one hand, I stuck fabrics and bits of paper on the canvas and painted individual areas by hand. On the other hand, I started painting motifs on plastic films, letting them dry and then sticking them on the canvas. When I pulled the film off, the motif I’d painted was left behind on the canvas. That allowed me to preserve the intensity of the colors, their metallic gleam and fluorescent brightness.

Another very important aspect was that I could define every shade precisely as I wanted it. It also allowed me to combine my motifs in an endless series of new transparent layers, a bit like the metamorphosis of plants.

What’s so unique about Rio is the mix of megacity and tropical landscape, ocean and beaches, mountains and forests. It’s also where I was born. Are you referring to the death of your parents and the divorce from your first wife?

Yes, I spent a year and a half not working at all. After that I didn’t really care much about anything. Then I created the One Minute Sculptures. I no longer had this desire to make “good art,” so there was some detachment. You often see that people who know so many great pieces of art cannot break free from them. They end up copying them and can never create a world of their own. They make excuses and talk about posthumous success.

I didn’t want to end up like tha.

What alternative career would you have chosen?

Even as a student, I used to think that if I couldn’t start make a living from my work quickly, I’d stop.

Maybe I would have become a gallery owner, I don’t know. It’s bound to have been something related to art. Works of art are so life-enriching, but you don’t necessarily have to make them yourself.

Many artists suffer for their art. I do, too. You suffer when you want to create something extraordinary or great, but don’t succeed. Look at Alex Katz, he has created something that no one else has been able to replicate. So you suffer, because you don’t succeed in doing the same.

I work on other projects simultaneously, but it’s true, these questions are my daily bread, as are the doubts and indecision I feel until I finish a piece. I have experienced moments like this again and again. I still remember creating the first One Minute Sculptures in Bremen in 1997. I had serious doubts back then. Were they any good? I just didn’t know. Then the catalogue sold out quickly and I was asked: “Did you know that people in England and America find your work interesting?” That was very, very surprising.

But back then, in the year 2000, computers weren’t powerful enough to create anthropomorphic shapes out of the body of a car. So we did it ourselves. The “Fat Car” is an actual Porsche, which we glued ­polystyrene onto. We trimmed, ground, smoothed out and polished the plastic, and then spray-painted the whole thing. All that took four months. In the beginning I was there the whole time. The decisions about the shape came only from me. I also did part of the work and supervised the process every day. You cannot do this any other way.

What is the way that you work?

It’s really about educating the client – finding what makes them passionate. We say no more than we say yes. We also focus on established artists. There’s new stuff popping up everyday and it’s not our specialty – we’d have to have another partner to do that. We also really love trying to think outside of the box. Think of what artists people aren’t looking at. The art world is very cyclical. It’s hard to explain why a certain artist in that moment is commanding certain prices, but we try to work around it. Our real goal and what gives us the most gratitude is when we get to a point with a client where their heart beats and they fall in love. When living with art becomes something that changes their life and they share that with their children, it gives their life another dimension where they travel and join museum boards and become involved in philanthropy. Instead of having art on the walls, it’s living with art, and that’s our happy moment.

How do you make money as an art advisor? We do not have an inventory – meaning I don’t have artwork that I’m selling. I’m really the go-between, between a client and the gallery. We work with some clients on retainer, the other option is on commission, and that’s really how it works. We try to keep everything very transparent so the client knows exactly what they’re paying for and there are no hidden costs, so we do not accept commissions from galleries.

So what’s an average day like for you? Every day is different. My business partner and I try to put aside at least two days a week where we do our due diligence. If it’s not gallery shows, then it’s museum shows, research or visiting clients. And then peppered in throughout that you have the auctions that you’re previewing or clients who are visiting from out of town. Some of our favorite moments are

the moments of installation at a client’s home. I was just at a wonderful collector’s home on the Upper East Side and we installed a piece that changed the entire house. It was like a missing link, an aha! moment.

How has the use of digital changed your work, if at all? Embarrassingly I will say I am old school – we don’t have a website! Our clients are private and they don’t want their artwork on the internet. But let’s go with the positives, like Artnet. A client will see something they love and within seconds they have an image. That’s wonderful. I love the breadth that the digital world has given to people. When I first started at Sotheby’s, it felt very elitist and selective, but now it’s democratized and I love that. I still feel that each work is special and we really encourage our clients to stand in front of it. I think it’s very rare that clients will buy something from a JPEG, unless it’s an artist that they’ve been looking for forever.

What would you say has been the biggest challenge in your career? I love what I do so much that sometimes it can take over, but I don’t want to miss my kids’ life. Now my girls are in high school and play volleyball. The big challenge was not giving up the time that you can’t get back with your kids, being there for their games.

What would your advice be to someone who is interested in working in the art world or as an advisor?

Put your work in. Get involved, go to gallery openings, meet people. Becoming part of a community is very powerful. Yes, jobs are hard but if you’re relentless and you’re there, talking to people, everyone finds their right place.

What’s your dream for your career? I’m living it actually. I’m 48, I’ve been doing this for a long time and it’s all coming together. All the hours, the time spent with clients and putting together collections, I would say I hope I can continue doing what I love.

Jean Nouvel designed the Louvre Abu Dhabi, a complex built to draw art lovers to the region.

ff the coast of Abu Dhabi lies the 27-square-kilometer island of Saadiyat, the “island of happiness.” It is home to a new Louvre art museum designed by star architect Jean Nouvel. Already, the L ­ ouvre Abu Dhabi has been called his masterpiece. Nouvel’s design was inspired by the ancient medina quarters found in many Arab cities. A total of 55 variously shaped buildings create a single complex beneath an enormous, circular steel roof. Measuring 180 meters in diameter, the roof is made up of seven superimposed layers forming a star-shaped grid. Jean Nouvel explains the concept: “The light has to filter through like through a canopy of palm leaves.” Visitors to the museum thus stroll from building to building in almost poetic shade.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi spreads out over 100,000 square meters, almost a tenth of which is exhibition space.

Jean-Luc Martinez, the president of the Louvre in Paris, describes the project as “the first universal museum in the Arab world and the first to be built in the 21st century.”
