General Notes The "sonic voyeur" is a parabolic microphone system with two video cameras on the parabola frame. One camera faces the voyeur while the other faces that which the voyeur is amplifying. He stands in the middle of a semi circle of the other musicians. The Cellist starts in from of the voyeur sitting cross legged with his cello laid on the floor in front of him. The parabolic microphone signal is amplified into the concert hall with the audience. The video signals are projected onto a single or multiple movie screens, large TVs, or other possible solutions depending on the technical limitations of the production. Parabolic Microphone

Notation The timing of this piece is organized in seconds. This may be done by coordinating the use of individual stopwatches of creating several clocks displaying the counter from a central location. As you will see, the notation is at times very detailed and clear in the articulation of musical events while at other times indicates the production of a general, textural event. All tremolos are to be performed as fast as possible, and a tremolo indicated with a "Z" on the note stem indicates a texture that is either irregular, aleatoric, or granulated in highly complex and irregular ways.

The detailed notation should be learned as accurately as possible, but it should be noted that due to the selective nature of the parabolic microphone's amiplification and the theatrical nature of the piece I have chosen to work with very broad musical textures and materials that GENERALLY are independent of each other. The textures are to be performed as accurately as possible, but not at the cost of musicallity or the larger implications of the piece. As you will notice, there are very few dynamic indications in the score. I have done so because the balance between the instruments will need to be worked out in the rehearsal phase of the piece and needs to be judged in relationship to the sound that is ampmlified into the hall, not just how the musicians themselves hear the material. Theatrical element Although the piece is written such that it can be listened to independent of the visual element, part of the premise of the piece is based on the fact that the audience get to see what the sonic voyeur is amplifying. We see and hear sounds from the musicians that we would normally not be able to hear. In essence, we are fading in and out of various musical, daily, and work related activities of the four performers. The way in which the music is performed and the general way of holding oneself as the actions are performed should be carefully considered and interpretted in the same way you might interpret a musical phrase.
