Letter of Interest February 2, 2015 Mr. John Sorrenti, FAIA Nominating Committee Chair The American Institute of Architects College of Fellows 1735 New York Avenue NW Washington, DC 20006-5292 Dear Vice-Chancellor Sorrenti, I want to express my sincere interest in the position of Secretary of the American Institute of Architects’ College of Fellows. I have held many positions in the AIA, yet I feel a personal drive to pursue new and more significant ways to serve and support the Institute and our profession as I enter the latter years of my career. In addition, an executive committee member from out West would provide welcome representation for the region’s members and geographic diversity among our current leadership.

I have always valued the College of Fellows and am incredibly proud to join this esteemed group. The College offers vital support, mentorship and recognition for individuals advancing the profession. I have promoted the College’s work in my home state of Nevada, where I’ve built a Fellows Committee to select, guide and encourage accomplished professionals to seek elevation. I have also begun a campaign to publish all successful Nevada Fellowship Submittals. By making these documents public, I hope to expand awareness of Fellowship and the many outstanding efforts of the individuals elevated. Their publication also provides a new resource for emerging professionals to understand the College and the criteria for elevation.

Several years ago, I had the privilege of being elected to the AIA National Board of Directors representing the Western Mountain Region (WMR). Thus began my involvement in national AIA programs. Previously my focus had been at the local and state levels, where I built a reputation for encouraging, supporting and enabling other new and established professionals. I have always advocated Institute participation and collegiality and engagement between individuals and components to generate greater enthusiasm within and for the profession. These efforts extend to design allies, the academy, policy makers and the public. I am a devoted advocate for the Institute, our members and the value of architecture and architectural thinking in shaping individuals and communities.

My Institute involvement often includes fundraising. Donations are the lifeblood of the College’s grants and programs, and fundraising has become a central aspect of College service. I feel I can provide fresh insight for the organization’s efforts in this arena. In 2013, as a new member of the Chancellors Cup Golf Tournament Committee, I introduced six corporate sponsors, each of which continued into 2014, making it a recordbreaking year. Also in 2014 I was asked by then Vice Chancellor Rubeling to chair the special East Lake Golf event for which I secured $15,000 from an important new contributor. I believe I have also significantly aided in raising WMR donations to the College–in 2014 WMR participation ranked 5th nationally, up from 13th just one year before. As a member of the Las Vegas Founder’s Club, I helped raise more than $10 million for local children’s charities over twelve years, including an interim tournament sponsor who donated $4.5 million over three years.

The College’s fundraising efforts have and will continue to depend on active and engaged relationships across professional and public communities. Connections are the lifeblood of any philanthropic endeavor and the sustained success of the College’s grants, awards and programs are no exception. During my national AIA service, I witnessed the transformation of relationships between the College and the American Architectural Foundation and the Institute, which have been solidly reestablished for the betterment of all. I would be honored to aid in continuing this excellent trajectory.

I believe Regional Representatives should continue their more interactive relationship with leadership while providing a solid platform for grassroots fundraising. I also propose we work toward a higher percentage of donors and greater individual donation amounts nationally. Finally, as the WMR Regional Representative, I look forward to continued interactions with the Young Architects Forum (YAF) and the opportunity to foster stronger connections between emerging professionals and the College, where our ability to expand the College’s message will depend heavily on relationship development and new modes of communication and interaction.

I have often been drawn to volunteer efforts that involve communications and rebranding. I have a passion for the critical nature of visual communication in the profession and a desire to shape a strong image for the Institute. In today’s ever more digital, ever-evolving communications environment, branding, strategic positioning and effective messaging have become exponentially vital to the profession’s identity and to public awareness of the work of architects. I also see communications as an opportunity for celebration and building collegiality within the College, among Institute membership, and with the next generation of professionals.

This is evidenced in volunteer work I have done rebranding the WMR, documenting AIA Board service, crafting and publishing five Past President books, and in expanding access to Fellowship submittals. The College’s leadership in the professional community depends on our growing and strengthening funding resources for the profession’s research and knowledge base. I wish to join in the College’s commitment to supporting the purposes of the Institute, advancing the profession of architecture, mentoring young architects, and providing ever-increasing service to society. I believe our future depends on how and through what means we communicate these purposes and actions.

The right combination of relationship development and visual communication go hand-in-hand toward creating successful programs, generating member enthusiasm, building strong community support, and fostering progressive research for any institution. Today we in architecture know more than ever the necessity for developing and nurturing new and meaningful ways to reach out to our members and the public. I have heard that my passion for communicating, especially in terms of bringing people together, is contagious, and I will bring this same level of enthusiasm and passion to the College’s Executive group and to furthering the mission of its members and programs.

Fellows are selected for their excellence in the AIA, architecture, education, service and the community.

Throughout the College’s history, Institute leadership has struck a balance between acknowledging the accomplishments of the individuals elevated as Fellows and a perception that Fellowship is elitist. The meaning of ‘FAIA’ is indeed a mystery for many; I am ever more aware of this as current chair of AIA Las Vegas’ Fellows Committee. I am also learning the multitude of noble things that architects undertake. I want all our members to better understand and more unanimously celebrate the exceptional efforts of the College and its designation.

I see the rise of young architects in a different world than the one in which my career began, sometimes more difficult and often presenting new, expanded and more challenging opportunities. As I witness this transformative moment in the profession’s evolution, I would be honored and humbled to be a part of the College of Fellow’s quest for excellence and advancement in the profession. If elected, I promise to put my leadership, relationship-building and fundraising talents to work as Secretary of the College of Fellows and to bring to the position the same energy and enthusiasm that I have drawn upon throughout my career.

HIGHLIGHTS OF PROFESSIONAL SERVICE Edward A. Vance, FAIA, is the founder and design principal of EV&A Architects, a design firm of 20 professionals serving the Healthcare, Hospitality and Commercial industries. Ed’s professional vision is to better serve his client base and develop stronger ties between practice and the Institute. Before founding EV&A in 2006, he was president of JMA Architecture Studios, a nationally recognized firm of over 220 professionals. For nearly 18 years Ed served as Design Principal and Studio Leader for the Healthcare, Hospitality and Commercial markets.

Ed’s project work includes design of the award winning Steinberg Diagnostic Imaging Center, which provides a holistic, seamless healthcare experience from check-in to discharge and has served as a model for all future stand-alone diagnostic clinics in the region.

As a past professor at UNLV’s College of Architecture, Ed continues to guest lecture in professional practice classes and juries 5th and 6th year design studios. Active in his community, he served on the board of trustees as vice president for the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum for 15 years. He also served on the executive board of the Boy Scouts of America, the TPC Board of Governors, and is the past Nevada State coordinator for NCARB’s Intern Development Program.

As a member of the Chancellors Cup Golf Tournament Committee since 2013, Ed Vance introduced significant new corporate sponsors, raising one third of proceeds in a record breaking fundraising year.

As a member of the AIA Board, he designed and established a mechanism to document the exemplary level of service provided by Board members and celebrate the commitment these individuals make to the profession and the Institute. In Nevada, as Chair of a joint Architects and Nevada Economic Diversification Committee, he worked with State Senator Steven Horsford to create strategies for economic recovery. As AIA Nevada President, Ed fostered improved relations between the state’s two chapters through co-branded media outlets, a state awards program, unified systems and other collaborations. He also launched and chaired the first AIA Nevada Fellows Committee.

To celebrate membership in the Institute and its honors, Ed designed and implemented the re-branding of AIA WMR, authored and published the WMR 50th Anniversary Book, improved the regional Honor Awards Program, and launched the annual WMR Golf Tournament.

Community Service LAS VEGAS FOUNDERS CLUB From 1994-2006, Ed raised over $10 for local children’s charities. The Founders Club’s tournament nearly ended in 2003 when it lost its title sponsor. Ed found an interim tournament sponsor for $4.5 million over 3 years allowing enough time to find a new title sponsor. In 2005, the Founders signed Michelin, and the tournament achieved its charitable giving goal.

Nomination of Ed Vance – CoF Executive Committee

Dear John and CoF Nominating Committee Members: Edward A. Vance, FAIA is one of the true gems of our profession. He is at once collaborative, resourceful, and devoted.

Ed has distinguished himself as a true leader, especially at the national level, and is widely known and highly regarded for his advocacy on behalf of individual architects and the architecture profession. I am therefore pleased to offer my highest recommendation for Ed’s nomination for the position of Secretary of the AIA College of Fellows.

Throughout my nearly three decades of service to the American Institute of Architects at all levels of our organization, I have known and worked with many architects. Upon becoming acquainted with Ed in 2000, I was immediately struck by his unique leadership style, which was (and still is) characterized by … well … a spirit of FELLOWSHIP! Since that time, I have watched Ed continue to grow - and give - and his distinct ‘brand’ of leadership endures. I respect and admire Ed as a sensitive leader, impressive practitioner, and special friend.

Ed’s creative approach to enhancing the service and support afforded to AIA members has resulted in several notable advancements on behalf of all architects, those within the AIA and well beyond. It was he, in fact, who first spoke of ‘turning the pyramid upside down’ and others began to use those words. But I attribute both the phrase and the concept to Ed. Within this paradigm, the member is at the top of the pyramid rather than at the bottom – and everything builds toward that goal. In fact, throughout his tenure of the AIA Board of Directors, Ed was the constant and consistent voice for placing the member foremost in our minds, reminding all of us that every decision we made or action we took should be of benefit to each and every individual member. This is but one example of an area where Ed’s influence has been positively impactful, yet his resume is replete with examples of initiatives, programs, and projects he has created, suggested, or instituted – all with the best interest of the member at heart.

Our community is fortunate to have, embodied in one individual, such a great example of unselfish leadership, thoughtful involvement, and utmost professionalism. Ed Vance, FAIA represents the best of the profession of architecture and I heartily recommend your favorable consideration of his nomination for the College of Fellows Executive Committee.
